I love playing Samus. Don't think I've practiced enough to move onto a secondary, but I've been having a lot of fun playing Little Mac and Ganondorf, so I might pick up one of them at some point. Really liked the thoughts and ideas brought up in this video about choosing a secondary - in the future, I'd love to see your tips for bomb placement, using her aerials (personally, I'm having some difficulty pulling off her combos), and reading the opponent.
Good video as always, but how come you don't show love for Dr. Mario anymore? Relevant to the video, I main Bowser and am having trouble finding a secondary. I do well against aggressive physical attacking opponents and poorly against good projectiles and characters that want to keep distance. I've tried other heavies and they're usually fun to play but never as good as Bowser. I'm considering Falco now, but I struggle with execution heavy characters. Is Falco execution heavy?

Tbh I’ve dropped doc competitively, only play him for fun now :( he’ll always be my smash spirit animal and my melee go to, but I just don’t like the feel of him in ultimate in comparison to so many others. For falco, he is pretty execution heavy but by no means the most technical character, Maybe top 20 or 10 most technical but not that bad. Hard to get used to though. He also isn’t the greatest at approaching though, so I’m not sure. If you like him and get results stick with him because he is a very different character from bowser that could diversify your options and coverage a lot, but there might be characters that cover more matchups or suit you better. Give Ike, wolf, and maybe lucina a try. They all deal with projectiles/approach pretty decently and can be played in a low execution high read kind of style. Don’t give up on falco just yet though, give him a fair shot and see how he feels.
Cloud does have good close range game and a rushdown while zelda is fairly well rounded and relies on set ups with phantom so i think this is a good combo

Honestly I would say go with wolf if you’re tryna be really competitive, and frankly wario also doesn’t deal very well with lame projectile tactics (or swords). I love wario though, and if you played him super aggressively and optimized your combo game it could compliment dededes more heavy archetype playstyle.
I main Kirby, secondary jigglypuff, who are very similar with similar weaknesses, so I also pocket pikachu. (Yes I have used these all since the first game and never have them up since I live them so much!!)
Depends on what you struggle with. TLDR: shiek if you want to go even faster and use relatively simple moves but with great speed and precision, and samus if you want access to a more neutral based, cerebral, punish heavy, tricky playstyle Samus and mewtwo are imo a great combo (unfortunately I never got a real feel for mewtwo but I’ve given him multiple tries in ultimate) but shiek isn’t bad. Mewtwo is def a glass cannon as is shiek, but Sheiks mobility and smaller hurtbox do make up for mewtwos weaknesses a bit. The main problem in matchups with m2 and either of those characters is that they’re all a bit weak to space animals, and between the three spacies m2 deals least well with falco (again imo and based off of pro spacies mu charts, unfortunately can’t find good m2 mu charts rn) and probably has the least trouble with fox but wolf is def also a threat to m2. Samus deals with falco better than m2 and shiek, but shiek probably deals with fox and wolf better than samus does. All of them are solid mid to lowish tier characters that have decent matchup spreads. If you want an even more fast paced glass cannon secondary go with shiek especially if that kind of play speaks to your preferences and stuff; but if you want a more unique secondary that covers m2’s weaknesses with access to a very different playstyle but has a whole different set of weaknesses then go with samus. I don’t haphazardly recommend samus to people since it’s a bit of a time investment for not that high tier of a character, but you have to learn neutral b wave bounce and charge shot stuff with m2 anyway and shiek is just as big of an investment for not that huge of a payoff.

I'm really curious on your opinion, i see many players having Wario as a secondary, and i know Kameme co-mains Megaman and Wario. Who do u think is a good secondary for Wario?
@Alexis Federici honestly those are just great characters together. A good wario secondary would prolly be a characters with disjointed hitboxes, access to/ways to deal with projectiles, and mos importantly someone who can deal with swords like lucina. So megaman is honestly fantastic along with young link (imo tweek had an amazing combo with those two) but honestly any of the links, samus, mm, maybe pac man, and a bunch of others are great secondaries for him. Just not a short stubby character like puff or something and you’re good lol
I recommend a fast rushdown character like Lucina, both are great edge guarding and I feel like the speed on Lucina could make up for banjos weaknesses. Fyi I love banjo!
I hope I'm not too late for the party. I main Samus (what a coincidence) and after some struggle with heavy rushdown I decided I could try a secondary. I tried Fox at first, but he is too far out of my comfort zone. I then went over to Falco, since I know him very well from Melee and he is a lot of fun so far and I consider my results decent. I main chrom, but I love playing toon link and Mario. I play Mario to cover chrom's weakness of recovering(for matchups like joker and some projectile characters) and toon link if I play against a heavy or a slower character.
I'm also a samus main. I've been playing Roy as a side main but I'm not too sure about him... his recovery is really bad and he can get clapped in a lot of match ups. What do you guys think?

My trouble with ZSS starts with snake or other characters who's projectiles are just unreasonably strong. I have a hard time getting in sometimes. I could use Samus to balance out most of those matchups, but I hate playing playing those typ of matchups simply because it gets aggravating not so much because it's a bad matchup. (Doesn't help that it's 90% of my online matches lately) Link was an interesting one for me because he was the 2nd character I tried after fox when I 1st switched over to ultimate. Everything about him came pretty natural. He just wouldn't kill as earlyas I'd like him to sometimes. I probably should've never dropped him because I've finally gotten around that issue but it gave me a pretty respectable Samus as a result so I can't complain too much. Joker took a minute to figure out but I'm starting to get the hang of it. I probably shouldn't spread myself so thin but his mobility is something I missed from my fox days.lol
I’ve considered g&w to counter super campy mu’s, and joker isn’t bad at dealing with camping either. I personally just think Young link is incredibly good matchupwise, but you definitely have to play patiently in a lot of mu’s so it might not be what you’re looking for. I would honestly just stick with zss and samus for now until you’ve really nailed zss and get a good amount of experience with those two, and swap around with a third for fun and just see what you enjoy playing. I feel like your main weak matchups on paper would be fox Inkling pikachu and olimar so anything that does well against any of those characters would work, but honestly youve already got solid coverage with those two characters

@@tiondrayhartsfield I'm quite low skilled, so take what I say with a grain of salt, but most consider ZSS to be favored in the Snake matchup. Marss has some great matches against Salem you could watch. If you are looking for guides, STAWBsOrio has by far the best ZSS guide series on TH-cam. And, if you absolutely must get a third, it sounds like Lucina would be good to cover everything else.
I’ve been a DK main since day 1, but I’ve been struggling with picking a secondary. I just keep picking up and dropping characters and its not good, so i was wondering who you think would compliment him

Both struggle against swordies tbh. Not a horrible combination by any means and imo tiers don’t matter until top 8 at any tournament, but if you’re losing a lot to Ike/pyramythra/Lucina/joker you might want someone with better disjointed hitboxes
I will say having more than 3 is bad, but 3 is manageable if you’re willing to really grind the time into matchups. Ultimate is a lot more mechanically easy than games like melee (in terms of like physical practice and execution, not in terms of “skill needed” if you feel) so maining 3 characters is a lot more doable and beneficial than it was in past smash games, but will take more practice to keep the rust off each character, will be tough getting used to switching character mid set, and is kind of unnecessary if you already dual main top tiers
If we’re talking matchups I’d probably say fox or pika, but metaknight isn’t bad. Lucina or Roy are great choices too, and young link is pretty darn decent and a bit more similar to olimar playstylewise
I main Cloud and i really don´t know which character should I pick as a secondary, I struggle with shulk, Snake, Pikachu and Pichu I was thinking of Young Link, Pikachu or Lucas but I can´t decide :(((
@Manuel Alejandro 100% young link no doubt imo. Pika has a better recovery and a pretty busted edge guard and approach game so pika is never a bad choice (Lucas is very meh, play him if you like but for covering cloud matchups hes not great). But ylink is probably still the best on paper, at least against the characters you mentioned
Honestly I’m not a huge fan of Zelda and I don’t personally think it helps Samus aside from against rare but annoying mu’s like duck hunt and mii gunner. Not optimal, but Samus is pretty solo viable now anyway so she’s not in desperate need of a great secondary. Don’t pick her up for matchup coverage, but do pick her up if you like her

@Delicous Falcon honestly I think samus is pretty good for pikachu, almost certainly an even mu. Yeah bowser and samus are fine against joker, neither have an advantage on him but they’re both fair enough mu’s that you don’t need a new secondary
If you’re down for a bit of a challenge and wanna stick in the realm of high tiers I’d go with young link or peach/daisy because both of their aerials and projectiles cover things that joker can’t (fast nairs, great tilts, combo starting projectiles etc) but if you want a more situational secondary that’s more of matchup coverage than a second main I’d go g&w if you’re more defensive but still want great damage/ko potential, or Roy if you wanna go in and be aggressive. Pika is also good just cuz he’s mad good all round. Or samus if you wanna be a cool guy lol. Joker doesn’t have crazy bad matchups though, so most of everyone works tbh.
Sounds like a great choice, just make sure you learn how to play against projectile characters/zoners (megaman snake ylink) and maybe g&w and you’ll be solid

Greninja I definitely wouldn’t recommend Gannon, dk is a very decent heavy and bowser is also an ok choice but if you’re looking for actual matchup coverage and are willing to try something different then give rob or snake a shot. Both heavies/big bois but don’t exactly play like them.
Ehh I wouldn’t say it’s awesome on paper but it’s not the worst option. Definitely somewhat similar playstyles so not too hard to switch between, but probably not totally optimal. I’d say they both have some problems with long zoning hitboxes (Belmont’s, lucina, etc) and both really like being in the air so ideally a zone breaker with a good ground game might be better. Zss, joker, Roy, etc.

I main joker who should I secondary?
If you’re down for a bit of a challenge and wanna stick in the realm of high tiers I’d go with young link or peach/daisy because both of their aerials and projectiles cover things that joker can’t (fast nairs, great tilts, combo starting projectiles etc) but if you want a more situational secondary that’s more of matchup coverage than a second main I’d go g&w if you’re more defensive but still want great damage/ko potential, or Roy if you wanna go in and be aggressive. Pika is also good just cuz he’s mad good all round. Or samus if you wanna be a cool guy lol. Joker doesn’t have crazy bad matchups though, so most of everyone works tbh.

Sounds like a great choice, just make sure you learn how to play against projectile characters/zoners (megaman snake ylink) and maybe g&w and you’ll be solid

Greninja I definitely wouldn’t recommend Gannon, dk is a very decent heavy and bowser is also an ok choice but if you’re looking for actual matchup coverage and are willing to try something different then give rob or snake a shot. Both heavies/big bois but don’t exactly play like them.
is meta knight a good secondary for wario?
Ehh I wouldn’t say it’s awesome on paper but it’s not the worst option. Definitely somewhat similar playstyles so not too hard to switch between, but probably not totally optimal. I’d say they both have some problems with long zoning hitboxes (Belmont’s, lucina, etc) and both really like being in the air so ideally a zone breaker with a good ground game might be better. Zss, joker, Roy, etc.

@super gamer boy that’s actually an awesome choice I’m disappointed i didn’t think of that lol. He’s certainly very different from Wario but for matchups he’s pretty dang good
