Smash 4 and early Ultimate - Only to test certain things when they appear. Most of my matches are won by knowing what the opponent is going to do because the control over my characters was so bad. Since February - Been recording 30 minutes of training mode everyday, with 3 quickplay matches as a reward so it doesn't become a chore. Recording it all because I want to see my improvement overtime later on. Trying for at least 1 year. Short hops were a very large barrier into more competitive play so for a while I was just focusing on doing short hops and only fast falling when I full hopped so I would pay attention and not go into autopilot. After 20 sessions in, I felt a lot better and wasn't struggling as hard to short hop, so I decided to go to 20 minutes of short hops and 10 minutes learning about the characters I play. Currently Lucario, since I want him and Meta Knight to be my mains. Lucario just is just more demanding of doing stuff correctly if you want to get anywhere with him though, Meta Knight is so much easier to do well with since you'll just catch people off-guard with him constantly, making it harder to try to improve. Gotta say Shocks me just how much there is to learn about each character. I accidentally do more than 10 minutes of researching a lot because it's fun seeing all the new things you didn't before, which can change up the game a lot. I do look forward to turning down the amount time spent on short hops, but they are used in just about everything, so I want to make sure I can do them perfectly. Next on the list is recovery because I need to be prepared for when I get good enough to fight people that know how to edgeguard. Around 50 sessions in right now (supposed to be at day 71 today.... Life keeps interrupting!) and I'm short hopping very very consistently and it shocks me because I thought I'd never get there. After all I was all try hard in Smash 4 and there was like 3-5 times in Smash 4 where I'd be in training mode for at least an hour.. Then get frustrated when no progress was made. At the time I wasn't getting enough sleep for it to really stick anyways, but doing it inconsistently doesn't really help. Also there's a large portion of my life where I was used to just carrying teams and being at the top in a lot of shooters and I could generally pick up new shooters very fast, so when I started trying to improve at Smash, I just thought I hit my limit super early. Turns out it just takes a lot more time to get better at Smash, and there's hell of a lot more thinking and adapting involved, while requiring more types of muscle memory than just moving the mouse, timing a shot, with a few key presses for whatever gimmick that game has for abilities/grenades or whatever. Also the mental game effects your gameplay sooo much harder in Smash than in shooters. My mental game is super weak in smash right now. Used to kicking people's butts in For Glory in Smash 4, now I'm struggling to do anything in Ultimate now that I get paired up with people of similar skill level. You know how demoralizing it is to think that you're super awesome at something for so many years, only to realize you're just doing well because other people were just so much worse and you're still bad? I'm getting over that slowly, the training sessions are kinda relaxing and making me more calm in matches as time goes on. All I gotta say, it's been quite a journey. My short hops are almost consistent now and I'm still in disbelief at how much better I got with them. I definitely recommend spending time in training mode just perfecting your finger movements. Hard to do all that cool stuff in a match if you can't even control your character. Still so much more to improve on. B-reverses, zair drops, Parries, platform movement, etc.. and that's just general stuff that every character can do. Probably even more stuff I don't even know about, and then there's character specific stuff. Every little bit helps though!
@@nanceskiinanceskii4674 That's what I thought initially, after all, it's a quick easy way to do short hops. Then after a while I realized that while I never mess it up in training mode, in normal matches I mess up pressing both buttons at the same time from time to time. Almost never, but it was enough to make me go back to attempting to get better with short hops the normal way. If I'm gonna use a crutch, it has to work all the time (great for people that don't play much though). As time went on in these training sessions, short hops got easier overtime. Increasing my finger speed, which made other things much easier like combos, and a similar things that require fast finger speed like b-reversing. It's starting to get to a point where I can short hop almost as consistent as I want in matches. I've been thinking about changing my controls for a bit recently anyways, since I gotta be able to do c-bouncing and can't really do that with my current control setup. So I might try to have 2 jump buttons again. As for what my jump buttons were: It was R + ZR. Right thumb gets busy with c-stick aerials. Which Meta Knight absolutely needs for his up air combo, but it makes things significantly easier when spacing in the air with everyone. I had 2 shield buttons for L and LR because I wanted to be able to move the shield in place, including if I wanted to play Inkling who I was considering playing at the time. However since then I realized I'm probably not going to play Inkling and even if I did, I could probably use Y or A instead for a secondary shield button since Inkling refills ink when doing shield+B. Also I wonder from time to time if I should do claw grip to access more buttons at the same time (and because it looks cool). However, the main reason why I've been afraid of claw grip is I'm afraid I won't be able to press the buttons fast enough. Though it is easier to press the BAXY buttons than it is to press the shoulder buttons. I'm going to give claw grip a shot tonight because it'll let me be so much more flexible with where I want to place buttons if some new tech appears.

Ahhh the training room It’s where I first realized I can duck under Warlock punch with Kirby And I realized by low angling Fsmash I can 2 frame (sorta)
I usually use training mode to create scenarios or play through the moving levels with 3 cpus at level 1, essentially making it play like a beat em up (especially in pac land)
You should've mentioned the option to press 2 jump buttons to consistently shorthop since many players have no issue setting a trigger to jump or already have it set.
I practice in training mode 1 to 3 hours a day, after I am done practicing my combos, I try them on a level 9 cpu but It is not that effective because the cpu is just too stupid. i also practice with my brother which i think is the best way to get better.
I rarely ever use training mode and my only options are to play vs CPUs or or my brother. I do both and each of them has its own merits but playing with my brother has taken both of us higher and higher, so I agree.
@@feyernightblade2050 I suggest that when you play vs a cpu, play it in training mode not in the regular smash mode because it is faster and you also have many options there.
Cpus, even lvl 9 can create bad habits. Just this morning my cpu opponent just keeps doing ledge attack getup and get punished and I thought I was good at ledge trapping. Yea I got destroyed after that
Mostly the reason I use training is to know everything about the assist trophy’s and to find out what character does the most damage with their attacks
I have a hori GameCube controller that comes with a turbo mode function and it’s perfect for training you can set it to an input the training mode doesn’t offer for example I sometimes set turbo mode to b with snake because it throws out frame perfect grenades that I dodge around to practice moving around projectiles or I set it to shield so I can practice reacting to parry’s it’s an amazing controller if you have one.
I used to train at least an hour a day. and while I made a little progress a combination of my friends not playing as much and my own personal drive made training sessions more infrequent. Very recently however I've been wanting to pick it back up and attempt to lab a specific character or two (mainly looking at Mario, Roy and Ken at the moment but that might have to go down to Mario & Roy) and hopefully I can keep it up :)
I don’t very often but when I do it’s for a long time. It also very rarely was with my main Piranha Plant until recently and more with my secondary Ice Climbers.
This is my first fighting game and I jumped into the spirit adventure mode all excited to smash. lol...I quickly learned that I have zero idea what I'm doing. So I've been practicing the very basics in training mode everyday. I feel like it's going to take me forever to get things down in this game.
I use training mode for approximately 9 hours in a single day every week if I’m being lenient, and then I never do any of the things I practice when I play online or in friendlies because I fear dropping the punish and I always just default to what I’m comfortable with anyways
JJSquirtle yeah, hard to do that when you don’t have people that wanna actually practice with you though, it’s harder to practice that sort of thing alone. I can get all the fancy peach combos 10 times out of 10 on a CPU that’s not moving, but actually getting the combo starters on a real person that’s not standing still is kinda impossible to practice in training mode
For me, the speed of the game was difficult to deal with when I first started. So I set the training speed to 1.5x until I adjusted. Now playing at normal speed makes everything look so slow and easy to handle. Now I just wish I could set the speed to x2 or x3.
Learning meta knight ladder combos in trainibg mode is hell lmao It's going well at least (I do this at random intervals, sometimes every day, sometimes once a month)
What I used to do in Smash 4 was to master the character by running, hitting... and then getting used to fight with the character by beating 3 random level 9 CPUs at random stages, to be prepared. And it kinda worked for me, having no trouble in any stages, and learning even more by watching how better people moved playing online
Hey quick question. Can you do a controller input guide on how to RAR from initial dash? I can do 100s of regular RARs in a row but from initial dash I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. Thank you
Essentially the controls are the same, the timing window is what changes. What can help with learning it quicker is that if you buffer your dash near the end of the setup attack (I'm a Roy main, so for us Jab is the setup for bair), all you have to do is tilt the control stick diagonally backward and jump to get more consistent rear-facing jumps. There are a few guides to IRARs( Instant Reverse Aerial Rush, which is a RAR from initial dash as you requested), so all you have to do is search for IRAR. I hope this helps! ✊🏾
I was confused just for anyone else SHORT HOP W TWO BUTTONS IS NO DIFFERENT THAN ONE. I get what he's talking abt now, but I was racking my brain abt why one button is better. You can still do falling aerials w double jump button, but not jump and attack
yeah dunno why they said slow time wasn't recommended. a lot of characters with high skill ceilings require slow time at first just to get the hang of the combo
Pauletna is very bad for practicing punish dash game because of her wind on smash’s. Personally I’ve always used captain falcon for most of my cpus because of weight, range, height, and practice gimping due to his limited recovery options. Small chars I use Lucas/ness or lucario (mainly because of how his recover changes on damage and his projectile ability. Same for ness). Large chars bowser or Gannon for combo practices and the range on their moves are a good mix and match for dash dancing practice
I've been using the joycons to play for forever.. it's starting to feel very limiting lol. Is it even possible to get the movement and inputs down consistently with the dogface controller?
what they said about short hops isn't true, you can just use the short cut, (pressing two jump buttons) there is never a need to manually input short hop, especially since they mentioned rar, you controller should be set up with mutiple jump buttons so you should be fine to do falling short hop airels and just short hops
I only use training mode when I'm looking for so combos that do really high percents or I'm just experimenting. And I'm learning how to go about defeat a level 9 CPU to see what I need to do to defeat that one cpu
I don't know if this works on others controllers cause I use joycons but if you press both of your jump buttons at the same time it does a short hop without the attack.
I like this guide. Clear, informative, and gave me a nice idea of where to start so i can stop being absolute dook online ... after like 20years it never occurred to me to practice a video game if i wanted to get better i'll still be dookie tho bet
Is it not a good idea to use the XY button press to short hop? I can't for the life of me consistently short hop with the light touch. (maybe my controller sucks)
How to *ACTUALLY UTILIZE TRAINING MODE* 1: use issabelle 2: you know what to do 👌 Other options 1: spam dodge from a level 9 cpu until know their instincts 2: use this instincts against them This is what I do
@@csmash342 It frees up one of the face buttons for an extra input like shield. In some cases this is extremely helpful, particularly on GameCube controllers, where the triggers are two-part but only the second part reads as an input, so if you want a quicker shield or grab, switching out a trigger is the way to go.
i feel like i am the only one who knows this, but short hop can be done by hotkeying jump to 2 buttons and pressing them both at the same time, GREAT for slow finggered noobs like me who can never get short hop to work consistently
I was thinking the same thing at first. However after trying to get better with the normal single button short hops, finger speed improves, which makes it easier to learn everything else as well since short hops aren't the only thing that requires fast fingers.... Also frees up another space on the controller if you want to experiment with other control schemes.
I play training mode about 45 minutes per week but I should probably do about 30 minutes per day because I play three difficult characters at once (Sheik, PT, Ken)
I play training mode for multiple hours a day. Sometimes it is for 3 hours, and sometimes it is for 6 hours. I never play online or with friends. To be honest, I am so afraid of not succeeding that I cannot bring myself to even attempt a match with someone other than an immovable CPU. I am paralyzed into inaction because I allow fear to control my every decision. I am doomed to a life living in training mode after training mode even as my soul screams in torment to at least turn on the CPU level. But alas, my soul's wailing is to no avail as fear has clogged auditory canal. I live in loneliness. Hello, loser. I am me.
Here's how to really use the training mode:
1. Set the speed to 1/4.
2. Zoom the camera in.
3. Do moves and admire the animations.
Literally me. I stan.
Lmao that's me

The only reason we use training mode

That's some serious dedication to short hopping, however you can just press 2 jump buttons at the same time for a 100% consistent short hop
@@keeshuunedited5678 yea plus getting better at manual short hops makes you more disciplined with not mashing along with making your inputs more precise
Ahhh the training room
It’s where I first realized I can duck under Warlock punch with Kirby
And I realized by low angling Fsmash I can 2 frame (sorta)
I practice in training mode before I go online everyday
I was so early there was no comments to copy.
Ok
Ok

BOOMER
For the most part, we all want the same thing:
Kirby to be viable
If Kirby could land than I would quit the game, I am sorry.
Please! They could at least give him aerial combos
Kirby is one of the few characters that DESERVE to be good. The good boy shall rise!
He is viable. I got him to elite smash with kirbycide alone
Hyper JANK I believe they mean in tournaments not in gsp ranking
At 9:40, what was that glitch with the Lloyd Rocket that you did?
I usually use training mode to create scenarios or play through the moving levels with 3 cpus at level 1, essentially making it play like a beat em up (especially in pac land)
You should've mentioned the option to press 2 jump buttons to consistently shorthop since many players have no issue setting a trigger to jump or already have it set.
Who needs that? Shorthopping is easy in this game.
Yea I got destroyed after that
@@kotong8090 💯 agree, cpus make me think I'm so good while i am actually not😭😭😭
Joker players don't even need to practice. The flick the c stick, press side b when far away and spam counter when they get comboed
Mostly the reason I use training is to know everything about the assist trophy’s and to find out what character does the most damage with their attacks
Practice does not make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect.
That opening guy has an amazing voice. I honestly dont like seeing him. Makes yall feel less proguides and more like some guys
Here's how to really use the training mode:
th-cam.com/video/5LuOhIuhxng/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=FatalityFalcon
I used to train at least an hour a day. and while I made a little progress a combination of my friends not playing as much and my own personal drive made training sessions more infrequent. Very recently however I've been wanting to pick it back up and attempt to lab a specific character or two (mainly looking at Mario, Roy and Ken at the moment but that might have to go down to Mario & Roy) and hopefully I can keep it up :)
Just watch the art of smash training video
^
Already do that and practice 2 hrs minimum everyday.
my friend who is a pro greninja player says he practiced his spacing with fair by placing a bomb and try hitting the bomb without self damage

This has been so helpful thank you!
I use training mode for approximately 9 hours in a single day every week if I’m being lenient, and then I never do any of the things I practice when I play online or in friendlies because I fear dropping the punish and I always just default to what I’m comfortable with anyways
then u need to practice pressure situations my friend
JJSquirtle yeah, hard to do that when you don’t have people that wanna actually practice with you though, it’s harder to practice that sort of thing alone. I can get all the fancy peach combos 10 times out of 10 on a CPU that’s not moving, but actually getting the combo starters on a real person that’s not standing still is kinda impossible to practice in training mode
Sean Solo That’s the frustrating part. You can be good at training but end with a completely different outcome when you’re playing real people.
Me: sees video’s thumbnail
Also me: insane atlean x flashbacks
I haven't brought the game yet but this channel has definitely upped my excitement and made me wanna buy the game + Switch.
I practice in training mode everyday.
I don’t think they read the comments bud
こうじ〜Coco lol
I’ve never used Mario, but his combos can be so satisfying. Great vid 👍
For me, the speed of the game was difficult to deal with when I first started. So I set the training speed to 1.5x until I adjusted. Now playing at normal speed makes everything look so slow and easy to handle. Now I just wish I could set the speed to x2 or x3.
I hone in my aggressive sonic skills in training mode 1 hour a day
Learning meta knight ladder combos in trainibg mode is hell lmao
It's going well at least
(I do this at random intervals, sometimes every day, sometimes once a month)
What I used to do in Smash 4 was to master the character by running, hitting... and then getting used to fight with the character by beating 3 random level 9 CPUs at random stages, to be prepared. And it kinda worked for me, having no trouble in any stages, and learning even more by watching how better people moved playing online
I play training mode whenever I feel self concious about being bad at smash (so basicaly after every other online matches)
When i saw the title I say to myself but I use training mode to make joker gun mash
I'm pretty sure there isn't any window delay to input shield when dashing....
...it's AFTER you stop dashing that there is a delay to your shield.
ScarletSpider thank you bro
I was confused just for anyone else SHORT HOP W TWO BUTTONS IS NO DIFFERENT THAN ONE. I get what he's talking abt now, but I was racking my brain abt why one button is better. You can still do falling aerials w double jump button, but not jump and attack
As an icies main the slower speed is very helpful just you you can understand how you press the buttons and see the speeds (sort of)
yeah dunno why they said slow time wasn't recommended. a lot of characters with high skill ceilings require slow time at first just to get the hang of the combo
5:39
You okay Mario-
what they said about short hops isn't true, you can just use the short cut, (pressing two jump buttons) there is never a need to manually input short hop, especially since they mentioned rar, you controller should be set up with mutiple jump buttons so you should be fine to do falling short hop airels and just short hops
Best Player: A Tough Challenge Have Fun
Me: Ah Shit Here We Again!
Good comment, The Austin!
Palutena went through a lot of abuse for this video
Maybe a guide for joycon drift, since we can't really go out and fix the joycons right now...
*insert obligatory "buy a better controller" comment here*
I only use training mode when I'm looking for so combos that do really high percents or I'm just experimenting. And I'm learning how to go about defeat a level 9 CPU to see what I need to do to defeat that one cpu
Very useful video. Thanks
1 hr a day in training mode
I practice like 3 hours all weekend and 1 hour a day during the week, bc I main sheik I need those 3 hours
I like the fact I'm still watching Smash content but I haven't played in months lol
I don't know if this works on others controllers cause I use joycons but if you press both of your jump buttons at the same time it does a short hop without the attack.
True but it's a lot less versatile
Plus being able to short hop improves your finger speed and will boost your overall gameplay
Is it just me or does Bonk have one of the most calming voices I've ever heard
“training mode has a lot of flaws” *sips something*
me: “was that the tea???😂😂😂”
Plot twist: he just did this guide to show off his Goosebumbs collection
Wait, couldn't you also just press 2 jump buttons simultaneously to get a short hop, instead of quickly pressing the jump button?
Does this apply to every character I play the belmont boys and I've never heard of this "movment" thing berfore.
I'm sorry to tell you but the Belmonts are unable to commit movement
@@EXFrost oh darn.
Bloodfrost 27 what they lack in movement they make up for in the power of the B button
Pressing two jump buttons is also a shorthop
Fixed damage is useful for building muscle memory for certain combos, especially infinites.
“Practice RAR!”
Me playing Mac: heh heh, I wish…
I practice in training mode at least 30 minutes to an hour a day practicing new tech, kill confirms, bomb play and bomb set ups, combos, etc..
I use training mode once every two months or something lmfao
eh i use it an hour a say to practice execution. Ridley has too many frame-1 links man...
JJSquirtle wait, you are a Ridley main?
@@JJSquirtle is that true? Can u tell me an example?
You can also just press x and y to get a short hop
I like this guide. Clear, informative, and gave me a nice idea of where to start so i can stop being absolute dook online ... after like 20years it never occurred to me to practice a video game if i wanted to get better
i'll still be dookie tho bet
Is it not a good idea to use the XY button press to short hop? I can't for the life of me consistently short hop with the light touch. (maybe my controller sucks)
So from monday to friday I could get lessons from u or am I wrong?
How to *ACTUALLY UTILIZE TRAINING MODE*
1: use issabelle
2: you know what to do 👌
Other options
1: spam dodge from a level 9 cpu until know their instincts
2: use this instincts against them
This is what I do
Loool 9:41 with the frame perfect technique.
L1 on jump is the most alpha control scheme for shorthops
Hawksey_ that’s my scheme. Why is it alpha ?
@@csmash342 It frees up one of the face buttons for an extra input like shield.
In some cases this is extremely helpful, particularly on GameCube controllers, where the triggers are two-part but only the second part reads as an input, so if you want a quicker shield or grab, switching out a trigger is the way to go.
I practice 3 minutes on Monday and Sunday and I practice 5 hour on other days
put on frame by frame and use little mac's ko punch fight any character at fountain of dream. thank me later for the 1080p HD visual effect
This video taught me to be even half decent at smash I need full time job hours in training.
i feel like i am the only one who knows this, but short hop can be done by hotkeying jump to 2 buttons and pressing them both at the same time, GREAT for slow finggered noobs like me who can never get short hop to work consistently
I was thinking the same thing at first. However after trying to get better with the normal single button short hops, finger speed improves, which makes it easier to learn everything else as well since short hops aren't the only thing that requires fast fingers.... Also frees up another space on the controller if you want to experiment with other control schemes.
I actually just have the CPU Lvl on 9 and have it shuffle to make it play competitively on me so that way I'll have a better understanding of things.
Could you do a video on Shulk’s dial storage? I’m having trouble understanding that.
What are you having trouble comprehending? Effects of each art? The general term?
I play training mode about 45 minutes per week but I should probably do about 30 minutes per day because I play three difficult characters at once (Sheik, PT, Ken)
If you have an unpatched switch. You should jailbreak it and install the Training Mod Pack. So much better than the trash vanilla training mode.
I have a bad habit of only playing training modes and not playing the real game
Bold of you to assume I use training mode
I feel that thinking that there’s a right way to train, is a wrong way to train
I am me.
Hey Bonk, I think it would be fun to join these training classes but I’m not sure if I’m good enough. I hope you might have some tips for me! 😄
What is the benefit of training with amiibo in match or training mode
