      I just wish they made the combat better. Facing 3 enemies, having to target each for making combos....heck, it's clunky as hell and often results in players running and searching for choke point, to pick them one by one, or simply riding around on horse shooting them with bow Mongol style. Dunno, I really think the combat could have been better. Still, great game nevertheless and cant wait for sequel!!!

      Yeah, I can't disagree with his points either. Although for me, he didn't mention the worst one, where you start a mission and it's just a bloody cutscene.
      I've enjoyed it so far but I'm at the crater, shortly after the 'reveal'. Before that, I thought the story might be wrapping up soon but it seems there's a way to go and it also seems predictable. The missions are still the same stuff I've been doing all along and I think I might be done. I've kinda lost interest in continuing, so if you've finished it, is it worth continuing for more than just the story? I ask because I can get the rest of the story on YT, it's the gameplay I'm asking about. Cheers.

    Update: About what I expected from his review. I have been playing PC and started observing games that don't allow me to bind keys to allow me to use tools more easily. Forcing me to use a radial wheel when I have a mouse with over a dozen keys and a keyboard is really starting to grate on me.

    • @samjohnson1992
      @samjohnson1992 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I understand how you feel but it’s a “console” game as Mack likes to repeat and radial menus are how it works on console maybe it’s tough to add those things in the code for a port idk.

      I hate to break it to you, but the game is developed on PC and then converted into a console game. They had to add the radial in after they created everything else. So that's not an argument to be made for why they can't put in any effort to allow me to use my buttons when they literally had to go the extra mile to make the radial for controllers....

    A fair review. I really liked Days Gone. It gets a lot of things right when it comes to an open world zombie game. I'd give it an 8. Flawed but fun. I played with a controller and on the hardest difficulty. I'd really recommend everyone play it that way and not to take any "perks" that raise the amount of damage you can take. The game is just better that way because the world continues to feel dangerous. Too many games these days give too many perks making the game too easy. Easy ruins immersion.

    • @BertyBertsson
      @BertyBertsson 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some games are made to be immersive, and some aren't. The stuff he didn't like about Days Gone didn't bother me and I'm all for immersion. I liked KCD a lot for that reason. I just wasn't annoyed with the bad parts of Days Gone because it's just a game. All games feel like games to me nowadays. I'm starting to grow out of them. I just can't enjoy games and pretend I'm there anymore like I used to, and it's not the games fault -- it's me. I've gone back to some games I found really immersive back in the days and I feel the same about them, gaming isn't as immersive anymore.
      Dividing players in to two different categories like Mack did is just stupid. I don't go in with expectations anymore because games just aren't as important to me as they used to be. I just play them as they are and don't care. I don't complain about features or lack of a certain feature, I just enjoy it for what it is, temporary entertainment.

Instead, it feels like today's developers are so damn lazy and give so little of a fuck about their work that not only does it not feel like we've truly surpassed the OGs like the Splinter Cell series and MGS, but rather today's implementations are WORSE than those ancient games because no one actually cares.

So when something breaks the immersion, I won't be too disappointed. And I divide things in a game in two categories, one... game mechanics and two...realism. After playing Subnnautica (among others...like Half Life, or Portal) I cant even deal with cutscenes. When you see how immersive it is for events to play out while you still retain control of the character...its hard to justify why a dev would even use a cutscene. I understand some people like them, but especially if a game is supposed to be immersive, it just makes way more sense to leave the player in control. In Subnautica there were so many distinct moments that I thought "man, any AAA game would have just made that a cutscene and took all the fire out of that moment:

    Any card above the 10 series should handle almost any game at 1080p. 1080p is a pretty old resolution standard now, not saying don't comment on the fact it can do it at that, but it should just be assumed most games can be run at 60 fps+ on max using 10+ series cards. Pretty much why the recent card draught isn't affecting people too badly yet, is due to people still using 1080p resolution with their old cards. 1440p seems to have been standard for 5++ years now

    Punted this after a few days when it originally came out on the PS4. Picked it up again at the insistence of the voices inside my head when I got a PS4 Pro during lockdown last year. Ended up loving it and am playing through it again just now on PC at 4k 60fps. On a controller though as I've only got one mouse. Some decent mods that make it more fun and practical too (shotgun mod, a reshade, fast bonnet, massive hordes, debug menu for messing around in-game, and more). Love the sound of the guns in this game especially if you're wearing good headphones or have a sub and good speakers. Some nice sound design for the world they've created/simulated (Oregon) as well. Sometimes turn off the music, get off the bike and just wander around to hear the sounds of nature that they've put into the game.
    But fair points about the game's missteps in your review. What did you make of the challenges? Enjoyed a few of them, others pretty frustrating and dull.

They prepared the cutscene and moment to be cinematic/special (ie in the evening, events happening in a way that can't be altered, chosen) and that is how you must enjoy it, no other way. I understand they want to tell a story but just a story isn't enough to be immersed in a game, you need decent mechanics, music, some choices that matter, character building, continuity.

    This game was a 9/10 for me. The gunplay was rough but I thought that was more immersive because your guy is a biker.. not a military navy seal who's trained to shoot guns for years. As you got more upgrades and better guns you could face entire hordes with guns alone. The story was absolutely amazing. I HAD to find out what happened to Deacon's wife and Boozer, Nikki, etc all your friends were awesome. When i pull up to a mission and it changes from day to night it doesn't kill immersion for me in the slightest because this is a heavily story based game so developers need to make decisions that like. Brian Cox (physicist) was doing an interview with Joe Rogan. He said they actually tried to make a realistic space movie with no explosions or sound in space but it ended up being shit. Concessions need to be made to tell the kind of story you want. This game wasn't a Valheim sandbox survival game. It was an open world action zombie game. It wasn't trying to be an rpg. Yeah some stuff like the stealth was absolute piss but the game gave me 9/10 of what I wanted it to be. A great zombie open world with amazing hordes and story.. I'm glad it ran well on PC. I bought Horizon on pc after playing it on ps4 and i might do the same with this one. Good review.

It's not a hit-box problem, what you're not considering when watching slow-mo footage is the exact moment that you clicked the left-mouse button. A lot of times the firing animation doesn't start immedietly, so when you actually clicked the left mouse button your crosshair was on the zombie's head, but when the firing animation and the hitmarker happened your crosshair had moved.

    Your points are valid and up to subjective preferences. I am happy that this one and Horizon ZD made it to the PC because I cannot aim for the frakkin life of me with a controller. With mouse and keyboard I can finally enjoy these games. In fact, I prefer this one to HZD. Ghost of Tsusima is a different breed, I love it on PS4, without a doubt my favorite game from last year - all platforms considered. And although I would be happy to have it on PC as well, it still gave and gives me a perfect experience on console, because I am not forced to use the suboptimal controller for aiming and shooting. Hacking and slashing, bludgeoning and raging on a controller is fine with me, but at the moment I need to do precision aiming, I am a slow freaking sloth.
    Days Gone is a great game in my opinion, way better than most zombie-themed titles, with the potential exception of Dying Light.

    I'm an immersion type person, depending on the game...
    For a story/adventure/open world type game like this, then I want to be immersed.
    If its something like COD (campaign) then not really that fussed, where you're doing the following the yellow brick road mission for 10-20mins at a time then who gives a shiiii

    I get the immersion breaking gripes you have with this game. Personally some of those things listed don't bother me all that much but some do the npc's and helicopter vanishing. Is it a deal breaker? No but it would be better if it was handled like Skyrim does it for example. As for the stealth aspect it's sad, it was similar in Horizon Zero Dawn which is not really surprising these days. You don't really get a stealth game anymore you get games with stealth mechanics so it's implemented in such a way as to not require much strategy.
    The time passing because the story takes place at night doesn't bother me in this game and it didn't bother me in GTA. The alternative to that would to require the player to arrive at the quest location at night time, in which case you'd have to use a rest or sleep mechanic and I don't really see a big difference between the two personally.
    Overall the game is pretty good and I've been enjoying playing through it and plan to play through it a second time. Thanks to Sony for giving us the choice to play it in our hardware of choice.
