- Mecha action short film made in Unreal Engine.
A solo animation project I worked on for over 4 months, depicting Mech warfare heavily inspired by Gundam and Armored Core. Special thanks to artists Zen Jirakun, Jaejun Kim, David Tilton, Pj and StrikerAstra for allowing me to use their concepts for my work.
In a near-future strife with interplanetary conflict and mech warfare, ‘Gunmetal Raid’ depicts a raid of a military installation by a burgeoning extrasolar empire which conducts lighting warfare using Ace-piloted mechs. Meeting them head on are the defenders of this border world, a planetary defense force comprised of their own veteran pilots. I LOVE the underground Mech revival online, from Gundam to Battletech, Mech communities are happy after 15 years of very little content.

The mechs dropping in from the sky using shields straight out of Iron Blooded Orphans, I love it.
That's such a cool part. That should be a staple of mecha.
The machine guns look like the ones they used on the graze in IBO, as well as the axe. Although tbf it is unreal engine so it is probably an asset for IBO models.
It's so good that even Zeta Gundam copied it.

The original Gundam did it as well though when falling from the atmosphere it used it's shield to not get destroyed in the entry
The perfect blend of Gundam and Armored Core in both aesthetics and combat. And the Project Wingman music is an excellent touch.

If you in fact like this so much (I do as well.) there is a Kotobukiya kit, frame arms-Kobold:RE2. Has this sort of vibe, I haven't gotten it so I can't confirm if it is worth whatever price it is, but it looks neat, almost eye candy for menacing mech enjoyers.
I love the Zaku 2 walking sound effects of the axe mech
this guy CLEARLY understands ''the rule of cool'' when it comes to framing, also the classic ''gundam footstep clang'' sound was immaculate.
Zeon/Zaku footstep clang, but still works well enough. You hear that sound and it easily just gives that sense of something massive and machine like with some weight to it.
yes the framing works here wonders , it gives you a sense of scale, love it!
My main problem with Armored Core 6 is how muffled and quiet the footsteps are... very disappointing. Mechs should be LOUD.
@@HevericPretty sure it’s just general footsteps. iirc The Gundam Mk II uses it in Zeta. Also, like a lot of sounds from OG Gundam, they’re shared with a lot of Sunrise’s other works. It was a bit funny watching Votoms and going “hey I recognize that noise!”

It's really epic, I think the PIXONIC team took a little inspiration for the Ground Zero trailer. I'm not saying it's a copy (because it's not even a joke) but they look similar, although it may be because the protagonist is the nether robot since I think this one was greatly inspired by a gondam. In fact there are many Otakus in pixonic

This was such a joy to watch, you did a really good job. The atmosphere, model quality, animation, the SOUND DESIGN, everything just oozes passion. Not sure if you'll ever make more stuff like this again, but I'll definitely be paying attention to your works from now on!
Idk why but axes always feel like the better mech melee weapon. Just feels right
Many mechs would not have the grace and agility to make a sword as effective as they would be for normal humans, an axe however

Ya know, this could be a backstory for Rubicon and I think it fits well. Or maybe some untold mercenaries' war stories in AC universe.
Well to really get into it, this doesn't really line up with Rubicon's history. Rubicon was settled by colonists, who would form the Rubicon Research Institute. Their creations went out of control, and that led to the Fires of Ibis. Some colonists would survive the Fires of Ibis, and would become the Rubiconians we come to know in Armored Core 6. Rubicon didn't have to deal with invaders until it was discovered that there was still Coral on Rubicon, which led to the corporations arriving on the planet.
I think it's best to take this short film and respect it for what it is, an original project with its own universe.
Love the vibes of this. Absolutely adore the way they drop form orbit and the way they look like falling stars.
1:46 this shot right here reminded me of a wh40k fan animation called plague by Sodaz before it got taken down. Specifically where the leader of the plague marines who also wielded an axe, pumelled an ultramarine beaky to death

Idk how you design these mechs but from just a glimps we can really tell they are a combination of Gundam design and AC design. You can combine them but still look obvius enough to tell, this is amazing!!!!

I was afraid that it wouldn't have any weight to it but sheeesh man. you NAILED the heft these boys had while walking and them dropping into atmosphere was solid as all hel too.

my favourite part and thing is when that mech prepared to jump with the sword, i think the most awesome thing mechs can do is show it's mechanisms when they're about to do something even cooler

Loved the AC 2 references from the orbital drop to the initial assault on the base. The mix of AC to Gundam is perfect. I especially love the emphasis on ballistics and conventional short range weapons over the beam focused stuff we get in most Gundam series. Thanks to IBO for giving us a more grounded series again.

Amazing little short, the atmosphere looked like Armored Core with the washed out burning base. The Machines felt like a combo of BattleTech and Gundam. Gotta love Mech on Mech hate with that combat Axe

I though maybe you were like in senior year of college or something since this was your first youtube video, and its your name 😄.
Landing with heat shields like it's from Iron-Blooded Orphans. The charging part reminds me so much of my childhood watching the intro from Front Mission 4. The best part is keeping the camera on a unnamed pilot and their mech being all badass and competent, and then all of a sudden dying to someone else, subverting the usual expectation of that being introduction for a main character. Just grunt pilots vs. grunt pilots.
Also my favorite kind of mecha. The kind of mechs where a military force would widely use for their battles and so will others. Nothing too special from other mechs apart from quirks like being lighter or heavier, use a specific loadout, new and old generations, and so on.

I love the sound of the running being the Zaku from Gundam, yet the whole film feeling much more like armored core with a extra pint of dexterity.

As a mecha designer I was influenced by Macross, Transformers, Patlabor, and Space Battleship Yamato but there have been a ton of others recently.
