  • Some viewers asked how I got the HUD that I've been using when streaming so here it is!
    Disclosure: I got this DLC for free. I am not paid or directed to produce content. All opinions are my own.

    I prefer the smaller version of the regular HUD. My reasoning is that you are to a degree at a disadvantage not being in the real cab and all the tactile effects real life would provide. For instance you can't twist your neck slightly, use peripheral vision and countless other minor things you do and don't even think of. So since I am constrained by the monitor (human interface) and need what some might consider "cheats" in the form of a more extensive HUD. They are in reality, a way to make the lack of real in cab presence are a way to account for the difference. Not that I won't at some point cut back on my HUD usage.

      This will make me sound like an arsehole but I play on a 45" 1000R curved monitor so I do have peripheral vision :). Only when I'm streaming and recording do I limit it to 2K. Every person's HUD choice is personal and your thoughts are just as valid as mine for using one of the other HUD combinations.

    Personally i like to just turn everything off. I may mess up everything sometimes but there is a satisfying feeling I get when I drive trains using only the onboard instruments and signs/lights on the railways. Same thing with hiding the objectives and time, forces me to to look at the schedule (by pressing T) and use the onboard clock on the trains. Or if I want more immersion, write down the schedule on paper or print it out and use that.
    Only issue I have is not knowing exactly how signal aspects work.

    Personally I’d like to use the track monitor, but I’m not sure you can change the size. This is a deal breaker for me with my eyesight, so I’ll probably stick to the old method until one day they actually implement an accessibility feature for this accessibility feature.

    can you do some tutorials explaining how to operate the Metrolink trains from cold and dark? how to read the screens and understand what the train is trying to tell you? also how to read the speed limit signs without using the hud? i don't want to rely on the hud for my speed. But the Green and yellow signs are too small on the track and they speed by you when your at top speed. idk if this is a me problem or if you can suggest any mod that enhances the visibility of the speed signs. this would be a big help to anyone who is trying to really learn the proper way of these trains.

    • @trainsimulatordriver
      @trainsimulatordriver  7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      You're asking for an 18 month course :). The scenario Depot Days on San Bernadino will take you through a cold start for an MP36. For the most part the only trains that make decent use of their screens are the German ones and some of the freight locomotives (SD70, ES44C4) the others don't really do anything useful with them. Where they do I cover it in my tutorials usually, if you think there is a specific gap you'd like filled call it out. For speed, you probably won't like the answer but it is learn the route. IRL the drivers don't read speed signs except for temporary restrictions. On the railway I work on for example I know the mainline speed and I know the speeds each curve is safe for. Generally speaking as a real driver (engineer in your case) you would do months of classroom training on the trains and route before they send you out to observe another driver then you'd be in control observed and once your observer things you've learned enough you'd do your assessment before being turned out on the road on your own. I use the Track Monitor for upcoming speeds as an alternative to learning every route. As you follow a real life method, you'd look for landmarks where the speed changes and note them down on a pad or file. Then as you drive turn off the HUD and look for landmarks and see how you go.

      @@trainsimulatordriver Haha i guess i have to sign up for the course. jokes aside, Honestly would love to get into driving these things in real life but i just don't have the background for it or even know how to get into it or know anyone i could network with to get into it. lmao. However, that is very interesting that they just know know where the speed changes. thank you for all that info. I'm surprised they don't have a better system for that in North America. i mean i know some of the highspeed trains tell you about the speed limit changes and some even slow down for you. but with how technology is now a days I'm surprised they don't have a system on board to indicate the speed changes in these North American trains.

    • @trainsimulatordriver
      @trainsimulatordriver  7 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@jay18fan They do, there are several called PTC (not implemented in game) and ATC and ATCS (Boston, all LIRR routes in game). They tell the driver exactly what to do. They're not on much of the rail infrastructure in the US and a lot of commuter railways choose to stay under 80mph to avoid them which is why the top speed on Caltrain for example is 79mph. I think the revamped electrified real life line actually does have PTC now so they can go faster. While these systems inform the driver, they are not a replacement for route knowledge. Route knowledge not only tells you how to drive it will help you recognise when things are wrong (e.g. something has moved).
      While learning operations is daunting if you want to run as per real life, you can run more simply in the game and be very satisfying. I'm a fireman on my railway and from time to time I get to drive. Recently I was handed the controls to one of our diesels and after pulling off a powered stop (where you have the loco powering, the rolling stock braking and the loco bailed off keeping the train stretched out which is more comfortable for your passengers) the driver supervising me asked how the hell I knew how to do that, I did not have the heart to tell him I learned it in a game :).

    I have just run a couple of routes with it and love it however i am still suffering from the problem of watching the hud rather than the train! What advice could you give me to get myself away from the old hud habit and embrace the immersion of the train?
    Thank you.

    • @trainsimulatordriver
      @trainsimulatordriver  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The contrite easy answer is turn off the HUD. You can only realistically do this after you've learnt the route. Even without the HUD you'll still get the audio cues for objective completion(like knowing it's time to close the doors). I've fed back that I would like to move the HUD to the bottom of the screen so that it's more a part of the dashboard than it could be at the top.

    Hey there, fantastic video, really useful for me as I have just returned to TSW. I had a free roam question........ I have been trying to set up four in line class 31 to pull a reasonably heavy freight load. The problem I have is only the lead loco is pulling. I have put the other three locos into neutral and let the brakes off but still they are not synced up. I have tried this with the class 37s and it worked a treat but can't get the class 31 to do the same.
    Any help with this would be excellent, I am really keen to use the class 31 as they pulled my local train when I was growing up.
    Kind regards.....

    • @trainsimulatordriver

      Not all locomotives allow multiple unit running. Just about everything American does. I think the 66, 57 and 47 (recent ones) do. The more recent German locos will. The 31 is very old I'm not surprised it doesn't know how to handle it.
