Why I Left Ram/Cummins for GMC/Duramax

  • I'm a pretty huge fan of Ram trucks so this was not the easiest thing to do for me. But in my time owning my 2022 I had to many issues, and the outlook for the 23's and 24's really didn't look any better. From what I've seen with other trucks out there, Ram really has a mess to deal with. So to keep myself from getting more headaches, I thought I'd give something else a shot. Hopefully it works out..... lol.
I'd be really curious to get feedback from anyone who does own a 2022 and up Ram in the comments below, so if you do please give me your thoughts! I'd like to see if anyone has had the same issues as me or worse. Anyone out there with a thrown rod out the block yet?
Thanks for watching guys, I hope you enjoyed the video!

I have and have had every one of the big three diesels. A short time ago, I really wanted a newer truck then started digging into the problems. I just for my 2001 dmax back from my builder and pulled my first sizable load. I no longer want a new truck. I have an older, pre-emission extremely reliable and POWERFUL diesel that meets all and more of my needs for 1/4 of the price, and it’s paid for. 👍🏻

I have a 21 3500 HO and thank God nothing wrong has happened. I change my oil every 5k miles and fuel filter every 10k miles. I also add fuel additives. 85k miles on it and counting with emissions Intac.
P.S I think the 2021 models for the 5th gen Cummins is the best year. This truck is a beast!

Fellow pilot here. So, I had waited 10 months for my 24 High Country Midnight Duramax. I had it for close to a year, getting it delivered Aug 2023. When winter hit, I had emissions issues and a sensor in the DEF tank failed, throwing a light. The dealer had to replace the tank. I still like Rams like you do and have had a Ram since I was 17 years old. I got a fully loaded Laramie 3500 Night edition, cummins, sunroof, everything for 73k. Great price! So, I traded the chevy for it, allowing my attachment to the brand get the best of me. After 12 hours, I tried to get my Silverado 3500 back, but the dealer doesn't have a return policy on new vehicles. This particular dealer sells Chevy, Ram and Ford on the same lot and I always buy/order from them. I will be ordering a Silverado duramax at the end of the year! No more Rams here, until I see REAL CHANGE. A different powertrain won't cut it. I honestly like the Duramax over the Cummins.

I have a 2020 Chevy 3500hd SRW. I am a GM guy, but the emissions on diesels will be the downfall of all of them.

I’m flabbergasted that you would go back to a ram. I don’t know what it is about The Cummins that is so phenomenal. It’s diesel engine. The GMC is a beautiful truck and plenty powerful Duramax. I have a 2015 GMC HD Duramax. I added an edge tuner to really open up the power. Additionally, all the troubles that ram/Solis is having & your previous experience with the ram truck and you consider giving up the GMC. Ram trucks are never going to be as good as the old old school ones. Drop your ram love like a bad habit and start showing your GMC it deserves.

Knock on wood, my '23 3500 SO/68rfe has been flawless since I've had it. 44k miles and counting. Tows heavy (18k lbs) occasionally and still solid. It seems like its hit or miss with the issues when talking to people. My only complaint is a couple cost cutting items on the Laramie trim level, such as fender flares. Otherwise the fit and finish is good quality like I expect from Ram. Depending on what they do with the '25 Rams will determine whether I stick with Ram. (this is my 2nd 6.7 Cummins and swear by these engines)

What year was your Ram? Did you have your Ram tuned? Regens will happen every 24 running hours for a full regen. Passive regens happen all the time from what I understand. It's too bad it shit the bed. Good luck moving forward.

I'm planning on going to the Detroit Auto Show this year to see what all the manufacturers have to offer. I'm leaning towards Ford for some of the same reasons as you. Of course the GMC are looking pretty awesome. It's going to be a tough decision but I'm going to make a change from RAM to something different, and better build quality.

My 2023’s have had electrical problems but what do you expect from a truck made in Mexico? They are made there to save money.

i went from ram to GM then back to Ram. Chevy 3500 DRW LTX off the lot had bad hub extensions and 2 bad primacy tires, truck 2 - 2024 Silverado DRW LTZ - bad font drive shaft, bad steering gear, bad steering intermediate shaft, bad front hub extensions(vibration at highway speeds). We thought 3rd time was a charm...nope bad intermediate shaft, steering gear and front hub extensions. All these trucks were under 1500 miles with these issues...sorry GNM 3 strikes and you are all traded for Rams. Also the cabin noise on the GM trucks is bad - like being in a tin can

Because Cummins engines used to have a reputation for being very reliable, and easier/cheaper to work on. That’s not the case anymore.
And Ram trucks have been unreliable for a long time. Especially the transmission.
