I disagree to an extent, since it doesn't take cocaine or steroids to make someone a great wrestler. It's not like either of those drugs is going to make someone suddenly be a genius at ring psychology or carrying on a great storyline, back in the days when it was more up to the wrestlers to carry a storyline, rather than any writers behind the scenes. Look at Ultimate Warrior, for example. Don't get me wrong, he was a badass, but he was well-known as not being a great wrestler. Steroids and cocaine certainly didn't help him out to become one, so I do think wrestling would have been fine without them, since the greats would have stayed great, while the average or bad wrestlers would have been relegated to the bottom since they wouldn't have the assistance of any drugs to help them get "more popular."

On June 24, 2002, Hart had a stroke after hitting his head in a bicycle accident. The Calgary Herald reported that Hart hit a pothole, flew over the handlebars of the bike, and landed on the back of his head. Hart developed total paralysis on his left side, which required months of physical therapy. Hart has since recovered much of his mobility and is in good health, although he has had other lasting effects common to stroke survivors (such as emotional imbalance). Hart wrote in detail about his stroke in his autobiography, Hitman: My Real Life In The Cartoon World of Wrestling.

I don’t think that lifestyle was ever possible if not for the coping mechanism of everything hard possible to take for the sheer level of its brutality and nature on the bodies of those performers. Sure, it’s scripted and “fake” but watching choreographed scenes of brutality and often hardcore true injury and trauma on the bodies needs you to become superhuman somehow. I don’t understand how it would be possible at all sober to even get through a day of their level of work.
