Brian Danielson even trained under him, but Danielson has always cited William regal as his biggest mentor. back then it gave the impression amongst fans that shawn wasn't that great a teacher (this was perpetuated by whatculture in one of their many lists, not my personal opinion). Hogan was long past his in-ring date. Michaels, the character, acted as a heel to try and bring out the best of Hogan, the character. Get him fired up, get him passionate enough to have a match that Michaels (the character) would know was facing Hogan at his best possible, and could he beat that guy. It's a decent story, for WWE. He did oversell, trying to make Hogan's offense look good, because Hogan isn't in 2005what he was in 1985, or even 95. Hogan's matches always looked ridiculous to NWA fans like me, anyway.

I believe what he's saying. I watched the match and at no point did I think he was "overselling" or trying to make Hogan look bad. That match was great and the buildup was great hence that was the highest selling pay per view of the year behind Wrestlemania. You know the saying, "haters are gonna hate." You always get fans who like to think they know all the ins and outs of wrestling when they don't, so they'll pretend like they're analysts, and insiders. The proof is in the numbers. That was the best wrestling program in a long time. 2005 was a post Attitude period where proper booking and proper build ups were a thing of the distance past. This felt like wrestling was finally back. We had Hogan in the main event, we had Piper's Pit in the build up, we had Larry King (in parody) and most of all we had a huge main event that we actually looked forward to seeing. It felt like the 80's again, and it was amazing. And I'll say it again, it was the second highest pay per view buy rate after Wrestlemania that year. All GREAT things. So anybody who shits on this program and/or, is either a hater, or is a mindless dope who just believes what the haters and "know it alls" have to say.
The fans don't give the wrestlers and bookers enough credit for their ability to manipulate their emotions. Most of the times the fans think they spotted a shoot, they just got worked again. The man had three moves: the Hulk-up, the Boot, and the leg drop. The latter effed up his back and made his already meager technical skills worse. Hogan was never big because he could wrestle. He was big because Vince saw an opportunity. He was big, blonde, and he could work a crowd. He went supernova when he adopted the Captain America gimmick. He was a cartoon superhero in the 80’s, so cemented himself in the cultural zeitgeist. Like any semi-smart celebrity, he’s carefully maintained his position since then. I think because Michaels did it in a way that stretched fans' credulity a little too far. The shoulder block that sent him flying out of the ring and the big boot that made him fall down, get back up, spin around and fall back down again-- it just doesn't make sense according to laws of physics. damn, seeing Shawn's muscles, specifically his shoulder repeatedly flexing as he moves his arm, he keeps his fitness up even when retired. make me think that as a NXT trainer he's using a more hands on approach and physically showing the guys a thing or two. its just interesting to see considering between his wwe runs he ran a wrestling school. Brian Danielson even trained under him, but Danielson has always cited William regal as his biggest mentor. back then it gave the impression amongst fans that shawn wasn't that great a teacher (this was perpetuated by whatculture in one of their many lists, not my personal opinion). I just like to view it as more character growth for shawn and he's now connecting with people more than in the 2000's. wish jim cornette would give him a second chance, I think shawns earned it.
I know a lot of yall are going to be so disappointed in this revelation lol
HBK did exactly what he should have done. He was bigger star than Hogan in 2005, yet he had to put over him?
That match might be made to look silly, but it's part of what makes it amazing for me.
I still rewatch it sometimes just to get a laugh. Lol
Never knew the lead singer of Faith No More had a wrestling show too!
It's amazing how many musicians get into wrestling
People think ric flair, the rock, stone cold Steve Austin were the best on the mic.
They forget the hulkster could shut down any career or storyline with just 6 words: "that doesn't work for me brother"
Loved hulk hogans energy on the mic, and his poses afterwards. Top draw on the mic. But no one touches the rock on the mic in the attitude era.
Rock was just a litany of catch phrases and potty humor. No range, either.
@@pinknick82Yep. If we're talking about insults (which is all the Rock was good at anyway), Cena is able to rip anyone a new one without sexual jokes or crude humour or profanity - he just spits facts.
He oversold because he's a petty attention seeker, granted so is Hogan, but that match was embarrassing
You oversell moves, not entire matches lol. I do believe Shawn though. He never wanted to have a bad match. Even with all the animosity with him and Bret, they went out and put on excellent matches.
He just called you all marks and you go out clapping lol.

Michaels is totally right. You can see earlier matches he had with Undertaker where he bumps exactly the same way.
I guess Shawn was right about how gullible fans are. All he has to do is pull your strings and you dance like a puppet
There's a difference between over bumping and overselling. Taking a big bump off a basic move is over bumping. Taking a move, falling over, getting up, spinning around and falling down again is over selling. It was a little too far and turned a dream match into a comedy match.
The bounce out of the corner and into a headstand
Never saw him do that except when he was mocking hogan
Bro… Michaels absolutely did not bump and sell the same for Taker. What he did against Hogan was Looney Tunes type shit. He literally just starts spinning around at one point. 😆

Where can I find these full episodes. Or do they only have short clips here on TH-cam?
It’s one of the greatest performances in wrestling ever. I love that he did it. Fuck Hogan.
The best of all time!
The fans don't give the wrestlers and bookers enough credit for their ability to manipulate their emotions. Most of the times the fans think they spotted a shoot, they just got worked again. That's how the business needed to evolve with social media, figuring out a way to be a step ahead of the audience
It already is.. been actually. Most of the big "behind the scenes" stories, shoot interviews, etc. is where the kayfabe is stronger than ever. For example, all the Hogan hate is definitely manipulated for us to hate him.. that's the point. If you pay attention you can see how they manipulate our emotions and "guide" our hate or love to whatever or whoever they want

I was just going to mention this, that it looks like dude has bigger arms here in retirement than he did when he was active! Shawn was never anything remotely close to a "body guy"; to the contrary he is always mentioned as the very first name, the epitome of the much smaller, more athletic types that was turned to in the wake of the steroid scandal and defined the most beloved era of wrestling ever. Perhaps, indeed, part of his holding up so well is the very fact that he probably took it easy on the PEDs when younger in bodybuilding you see this often that these are the guys who can still look good and don't face health crises when older. This isn't a current video but he still looks quite good today. Especially for a guy who'd gone balls to the wall with something as generally, multiple-ways unhealthy as pro wrestling.

I have never understood, and to this day I still don't understand, why people think "overselling" like that would make your opponent look stupid, or embarrass him. If anything, it should make it look like he's extra-beating the shit out of you.
I think because Michaels did it in a way that stretched fans' credulity a little too far. The shoulder block that sent him flying out of the ring and the big boot that made him fall down, get back up, spin around and fall back down again-- it just doesn't make sense according to laws of physics. The way Michael sold didn't make Hogan look powerful; it made the match look, to use the word non-wrestling fans love to use, "fake". That's my understanding anyway.
