I remember getting angry seeing a dog go through this before, but then finding out it was because their human developed Alzheimer's, and kept forgetting they already fed the dog. Taught me something about learning the whole story before getting angry at someone I didn't even know.

@Daddy walking can substitute for running well enough they both burn calories walking does is slower but if you take your time with walks its just as good for burning calories as running
@Daddy also exercise alone will never be enough to overcome a bad diet its just not happening if you eat 5000 calories a day and need to burn 2000 there is no way you are doing that at least everyday i had to walk 32 km to burn 2400(nearly) and it took 4,3 hours almost without any rest so even if the dog was walked everyday it wouldn’t have been enough

Yes, good point. Children AND animals. The homeless. The elderly. The newborn baby in a dumpster. The trash bag of kittens on the side of the road. Any hopeless human being or helpless animal that you come across is an opportunity to save a life and change it for the better. Some find their niche serving hungry folks in a soup line. Others find theirs in fostering abused children. Still others make it their life's work to shut down puppy mills. It's all good and worthwhile.

Feeding animals to the point of obesity like this is a form of animal abuse to me
People do the same thing with their children, sometimes.
I agree it is animal abuse. There was a woman in our neighborhood who went through dogs like water - none lived more than 5 yrs. and all died from complications of morbid obesity. It made me sick and I told her so & she insisted it's "love". Luckily eventually she couldn't adopt any more dogs -
Same applies to humans. People fat-shame pets, and get angry when they find people with obese dogs and see it at cruelty; The moment, you tell people their obesity is unhealthy, they get angry. Madness.
I have a ques for u. Do u eat meat? If so then.. well forget about it, abuse is way worse than killing and that also over feeding on my gawdddd I can't even digest the fact that there are so evil people in the world who abuse animals instead of killings and eating it.
Some just claim to "love" their pets so much. But people need to understand that dogs need to maintain a healthy weight as well as humans.

I can't believe some people could ever let their dog get to this weight in the first place. Its not "cute" its animal cruelty
It's fucking evil.
It's possible her previous owner was having mental issues, for example, a lot of elderly people in the early stages of dementia end up over-feeding their pets and don't realize what they're doing. It's not intentional - and it can easily get out of hand if someone doesn't realize what's happening and step in and take care of the animal. But often, people with dementia either have few people in their support circle, or the people they do have are exhausted and completely focused on the person and don't have the mental energy to deal with the pets. It's really tragic. The pets suffer terribly (as well as everyone else).
But if it was someone who was just over-feeding because they thought it was cute - I fully agree. Really irresponsible and so unfair to the pets.

I did something similar with a cat we adopted a number if years ago.
We found her at the Humane Society. It was love at first sight. We named her Louisa. Louisa was so hungry all the time. When she'd been rescued, she had been out in the cold for two weeks. We started her on dry food, and over the course of a year, she became quite heavy. Even though we had reduced the amount of food she was eating, she was still quite round.
One day we took her to the Vet, and the Vet recommended canned food. So we put her on a strict diet of 1/3 can of food, twice a day. Slowly over the next several months she lost weight and became more active. She had short legs, so she couldn't jump very high. We would bring her out to the deck that was enclosed with a gate, and she loved being outside, laying in the warm sun, and chasing chipmunk down to the drain pipe.
Louisa lived to the ripe old age of 23. She lived in comfort, loved all of us unconditionally, and was a very happy cat.
One day we took her to the Vet, and the Vet discovered a lump. A biopsy was taken and it was cancer. We had a choice to put her on chemo or let her live another six months without the poison of chemo. We chose the latter. She did very well until about five weeks before she passed. Then she got a mouth infection. So the Vet did a cleaning, and removed infectious tissue. She came back and enjoyed another four weeks of no pain. The infection came back, and we knew she was at the end. It was evening and we took turns holding her wrapped in a soft towel. She knew she was loved.
The next morning, we took her in to the Vet hospital. Before they gave her the final shot, I held her head in my hands and looked her straight in the eyes and said, "We love you and know it's your time. Send me a sign that you're all right." Then the doctor gave her the shot. She was gone within seconds. I cried, but knew it was her time. She was no longer in pain.
About two days later, I was sitting watching TV, when out of the corner of my eye, I saw a silhouette of the cat race across the floor and dissapear between the two easy chairs. I knew it was Louisa.
A week later, I saw her again. She was about three feet off the ground as she ran past the TV and disappeared into the wall. Another time, we were having a quiet conversation at dinner, when I heard a very soft meow down on the floor. It was Louisa letting me know she was there.

2:53 that is the face that says it all, after all of the hard work put into making this dog healthy again, here you can tell that the dog felt how I felt and how many others feel after working hard to lose a ton of weight, a sense of relief and satisfaction.
Loving a dog isn't over feeding them. Love then enough to give them the best diet and exercise. They'll be happier and love you for it.
Its so easy to overfeed dogs and i have had to literally battle my wife for over 13 years to keep our bulldogs healthy she calls me cruel but i love them and i make sure they never get fat they already have enough problems...

It also makes no sense for the owner because once a cat gets diabetes, it leaves them at higher risk for basically all the other cat diseases, and then the vet floodgates open and care costs you an arm and a leg, multiple times a year. Then you get lazy or busy, forget to give insulin shots, then guess who gets to be put down in the prime of life? Yes, the cat. All because the owner thought it was cute. Not worth it.

I really don't see how it is difficult, to be honest. I mean, objectively at least. You read the instructions on the dog food and it tells you how much your dog is supposed to have depending on age and size. Then you use a measuring cup or put it on a scale. I weigh my dog's main meals and make sure to subtract a good amount so there's room for treats. I'm always surprised when i hear people don't do that.

I wonder if her original owners where elderly. I see this a lot with really old folks. Who are sick, physically and mentally and don't understand what they are doing. Glad she is better now. Overweight is just as bad as underweight for animals.

Yeah, my grandmother did this to her little doxen mix. Love her so much, but she just couldn't hold out against those sad, pathetic eyes when she was eating. Just fed the dog from her plate and unfortunately wasn't able to take her on walks, so the little thing just kept gaining weight. She'd even sneak the dog food if she knew we weren't paying attention bc we'd try to stop her lol

She looks like an older lady, with all that grey/white around her muzzle. But you not only saved her, but almost surely added another 5 years to her life. At least. And thank you for adopting her. After all she's gone through, with you taking the time and effort to help her get to where she can actually do dog things - and enjoy them, I think it would have been emotionally devastating for her to have to move on. Yes. Excess weight puts additional pressure on legs that are not meant to handle it. With overweight animals, there is a drastic increase in broken bones and torn muscles and tendons. It also puts them at risk for developing early arthritis and increases the severity of it. Overweight animals face daily joint pain.
