I have a buff-colored cocker spaniel just like the dog in this video. We got him from a shelter at age 3 and he was 34 lbs. I took him to the vet the next day. He told me just to give him 1 cup of dog food and just a few Milk-Bone mini biscuits as rewards during the day. No people food whatsoever which is what he was eating at his prior home. In no time he was down to 20 lb. That was 8 years ago and he continues to thrive. He is a blessing and has brought so much joy to me and my family.

People don't realize what they do to their animals feeding them junk food or snacks....a lot or unlimited food. Keep up the good work
I worked at a senior living facility. The old folks would not stop feeding the house dog human food no matter how many times they were told. They ended up killing that poor dog.
@@tracypolselli1464 for a lot of old people, they have things like dementia or Alzheimer’s. Theres lots of stories about old people overfeeding their pets because they simply forgot that they had fed them already
The dog died because the staff did not arrange a new home for the poor sweetheart. It was not the fault of the seniors with dementia. How sad for all. Especially the doggie. 💔 (anyone, certainly management could've stopped the abuse of that dog, instead they chose to turn a blind eye. I rehomed a cat from a long term care home that was experiencing the same abuse.)
I agree completly. It's crazy to see what people let their dogs eat. Ice cream, peanut Butter, donuts etc. Sugar can make dogs blind and overweighted they could get all the seizures like humans...so sad...
It doesn't necessarily mean that. It could be the owner was a senior who was no longer able to take her out on walks or is having memory problems and didn't realize they had already fed her. Be honest no dog will turn down food if you put i t in front of them. You see these sort of things a lot with cats also.

I had a cocker spaniel.. She passed away due to cancer, it was hard losing her. I still miss her terribly..cocker spaniels are the best ❤️

@@screenPhiles I mean that it is easy to judge people when you do not know their circumstances. In this case that dog may have been voluntarily given up because of disability and poverty.
@@screenPhiles That’s how I rescued my dog. The owners liked her when she was only a puppy and they fed lily their left overs from dinner rather than chucking it in the bin. She go a tumour because of that which was the size of a soccer ball.
Willpower only takes you so far...everyone has days of wanting to quit. A good support system, getting help with emotional issues underlying the overeating, having a plan for success are all key factors.

This reminded me of a friend inheriting her mothers very overfed Beagle. The dog maybe was supposed to be 15 pounds and was 50. Inside that dog was one who wanted to do normal activities and she eventually lost over 25 pounds last I saw her and was able to go out on a horse trail ride, her tail findable above the low shrubs. Do you remember Wishbone the television show dog? (Actually several dogs used.) The trainer took the total amount of food calories for a day and included the treats used for training. So, if a treat were given, it was part of the total count. You did such a remarkable job with portions, encouragement and walks.
Probably added a few years back to her life, she looks like a young pup again.

The one advantage a dog has over a human on a diet is they're not humans! They can't open the fridge, pantry or drive to the store for a snack. And what a cute & happy little Cocker Spaniel she is now!

poor pup. i wonder if her previous owner had alzheimer’s or some other illness, so they accidentally overfed her. glad she found a family that was able to help her.
A lot of the times this isn’t so true, people think fat pets are healthy for some reason (young or old), so they over feed and give them way too many treats. Also many people don’t know how much to feed their pets. I knew someone in their 40’s who did this to their cat, until I explained to them that wasn’t healthy for them. It took a few months for them to break their habit. This person thought they were depriving the cat and thought the cat was sad when they didn’t get a treat. I kept explaining that they were imposing their human views and anxiety onto your cat. The cat adapted quick, but the human took some time. They did learn though.

I love it that they got her from the South LA shelter. We adopt all of our dogs from there because we've found that to be the shelter with the dogs in most need of help.
I have to do this for my 25lb cat now.
