      Shelter vets are more quick for kill. Rarely do shelters have budgets for surgeries let alone meds and sometimes not enough volunteers.

      Miranda Brooks i'm glad this dog didn't have to be put down but yeah what you're saying is 100% correct. Shelters don't have the things necessary to keep these animals comfortable and healthy at the rates they are coming into the shelter. And with no kill shelters they are very picky about the animals be taken they only take in animals they can confidently rehome.

    Something similar happens with one of my fosters; he had an injured eye; the rescue told me the day I got him that he has an appointment to get his eye removed; I asked if he had seen a specialist, the answer was not, only the shelter vet. My husband and I believed his eye was still working, so we took him to see an eye specialist, who confirmed he didn't need his eye to be removed; the diagnosis was Keratoconjunctivitis sicca in my left eye, sounds scary, but it's nothing more than “dry eye.” The treatment is eye drops twice a day for the rest of his life. He was adopted last month❤️🐾.

He was on the operating table and we had 45 seconds to decide if we should euthanize him. We said no. He was with us for 9 years and he was a good daddy to the 3 kittens we eventually adopted. Never regretted it for one second.

      Did the vet even try putting a towel under him like you did to check for movement? Shelter vets almost always suggest killing because a shelter doesn't have the budget for meds or surgery or volunteers to rehab a dog. Wishing you a happy and healthy long relationship! 👍

    Doctors would never suggest euthanasia for a human with weakness or paralysis in their legs (I hope). The dog was not in acute pain. He just needed someone who cared enough to work with him and make the necessary accommodations for him to function. Doc got all of that, plus a healthy dose of love, from you.

  • @WillyPDX94
    @WillyPDX94 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Bless you both. I know you made the right choice giving him a chance for some happiness for as long as it's possible. Almost a year ago we said goodbye to our sweet buddy, Chet, who suffered from this same disease as well as a heart condition. Our Vet had advised to put him down more than a year earlier because of his condition. He looked horrible, with his spine sticking out and his hips so wasted, but if you spent any time with him, you would realize he wasn't in pain nor was he depressed. He still loved to eat, loved to get his massages, and though he was very unsteady on his legs, he got around the house from nap spot to nap spot. Some days he was able to walk a bit in the yard and we encouraged that. His mobility gradually declined until we had to carry him, and of course even with diapers we had a lot of messes to clean up in the house. But the trade off of having him with us and allowing him to live out his life to its fullest was so worth it to us, and to him. Vets mean well, but they sometimes don't understand that a disabled dog can often be quite happy if he has the support he needs. We had an extra 16 months with Chet and he lived to see his 14th birthday. We miss him every day of course but we are comforted knowing that we made his last days as long and happy as possible. I hope you have a long, long time with your sweet doggie.
