    Great video! One big issue that I read about the new EP8 is a loud rattle noise when not pedaling on rough terrain. You do mention the noise problem the video, but it doesn't seam to be a big issue to you, but to some, it's a deal breaker. More on that issue from you would be appreciated. Thanks!

    It’s nice because many bikes with E7000 are more cheap (like this Merida) and then you see the E7000 even got some pros than the others. It’s more range, less noise, better modulation ... not a deal breaking as you may think, the Boost mode is always there if you need power.

    Two things: First, there is an adapter you can buy for the internal Shimano battery that enables you to charge it off the bike. I have two of the 504wh batteries and charge one of them off the bike. Second, I noticed a huge improvement on my Santa Cruz Heckler after going to a 29 inch front wheel. I think it depends on the bike and rider and where you are riding. I ride in an area with lots of hills and roots and the 29 front wheel gets over stuff easier.

    • @smuy3782
      @smuy3782 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The adapter ships with all new bikes. If you had to buy one it's because your bike shop didn't give it to you.

      Yep, I helped pioneer 650b and after spending a fair amount of time on a 29er, never looked back. Back and front most of the time. Except in snow where I go extra wide so I do 275ers. Even my 5'3" tall wife does well on 29 most of the time. But in anyone under 5'7" they should try both and see what works best for their own particular anatomy.

    I've use the sram ex1 which came with my Focus Sam2 pro.
    I've covered nearly 5000km and I'm still on the first cassette. I've rotated 3 ex1 chains.
    For me 8 gears on an ebike is spot on. The motor takes up any hardship from not having the "perfect" gear you may have with 12 cogs.
    Sram built the ex1 for e-mtb and I'm a big fan👍🏼.

    Great video! Lot of information I've never heard from any dealer (e.g. number of gears not being that important)
    Just one comment: I've been told that Mullet configuration has the advantage that the bike can be built slightly lower. For me as a short person that's surely an advantage.

Shimano South Africa say they will only have the ep8 upgradeable motor in April 2021, but I cannot upgrade my 503Wh battery to 630Wh, because of the length of the battery.Would it be adviseable to upgrade to the e8000 then? I bought a 2019 Canyon with a E8000 system hoping that the battery would be upgradable, which turned out to be correct. The motor would be upgradable also, alas they cannot be found anywhere.
    I have ridden about 4700 km to this date and I have completely worn out the 15, 17 and 19 tooth cogs on the rear cassette. That seems to be the sweet spot with 34 tooth chainring. I would be very happy getting a 12-46 tooth 12-speed cassette, 11-46 would be great too and maybe even a 11-speed would be OK. I find that I don't really need, nor use the 11 and 50 teeth cogs once even in a week of riding.

    I'm extremely curious about what you said about the cadence, which is when too high, it will actually drain more battery.
    I rude a Santa Cruz Heckler from 2020 and average cadence on rides I do is 110 rpm (with the eco mode 99% of the time). Are you telling that a lower cadence would actually give me more range?

    The E7000 is a very underated motor I have 3,000kms so far and its been faultless, its lighter, quieter and more efficient than the E8000, it has more than enough grunt at 60nm. I agree that 12sp is unnecessary on an ebike I run 11sp max 42t.

    • @tamasvarga67
      @tamasvarga67 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Just to make it clear the E7000 is not lighter, E7000/E8000 are both 2,8kg and the efficiency comes from the less power... still, it’s an awesome choice and 60Nm is enough for many riders. While the necessary number of gears is one thing but depending where you ride, the wide range is necessary. I run 11 speed 11-46 with 32t chainring on my E8000. The factory 11-42 with 34t wasn’t low enough for me as I prefer lower gear ratio over Boost mode.

    I don’t know what kind of bosch motor you were referring to when talking about noise, but my experience is the total opposite. I rode a bosch performance line for years and even in turbo mode it was very quiet. I then switched to a GT ePantera with a Shimano e8000 and at maximum assistance it’s like riding a lawnmower. It’s whiny loud and super annoying, but I’ll take that over the new bosch with its anti tampering software that can brick your bike and leave you stranded if there is any kind of communication problem (even the ones not directly caused by derestricting) between the speed sensor and the motor

I am not used to E-bikes, I most of the time ride on hard roads in the dunes and a little bit offroad (with Continental Slicks on my Intersens 26", 3x9). I would love a new E-MTB with hardtail with lockout and use it witch slicks. I will ride large parts around 50KM/h. What can be advised regarding the nowadays casettes etc?

    My 12sp drivetrain on my ebike gets used a lot on the 51 teeth. My area is very hilly and since I ride a lot with people without bikes that's the natural gear for uphills. Also it means less battery consumption.

    Well done, very useful test between shimano engines,and usefull general condiderations,
    I am concerned that you say the 7000 is less durable than the 8000, what are the parts that should wear or break?
    Has anyone ever sent an E7000 to service during the warranty period, requesting replacement with an 8000, paying the difference?

    • @Minecraftrok999
      @Minecraftrok999 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Don't worry about that.
      The E7000 is an amazing motor and is also reliable.
      If you'd want the motor exchanged you'd likely have to pay full price.
      And the E7000 is certainly more durable than many other motors in the market. (including mine)

      The motors are not readily available. However, I believe that the motor mounts are identical on them and are a direct swap, if you happen to find one. Additionally the newer 630 Wh BT-E8016 external battery fits a frame for the 504 Wh BT-E8010 external battery, this needs a little and easy modification to the battery mount or a new mount meant for the new battery.

      You do have an E-Bike without a speed limiter, right?
      Because else I can't really see the use of a 10 cog gear.
      You could always increase the tooth at the front chainring for some added speed.
      Maybe couple it with a 10-36 cassette for some tighter spacing between the gears.

    This review kind of confirms my feeling about the continuing evolution of products like the E bike motors but this accounts for many other products too.
    At a certain point manufacturers keep updating their equipment and specs because it's part of the game and they need to keep up with the specs of competition.
    Consumers like to believe the latest model is always better and better performing and in reality this true but marginaly noticable by the average john Doe.
    Durability however seems to be far more important to me then most of the other BS.
    I am verry glad that I was able to buy my E8000 E bike at about the point there was an update to hapen in the shimano product range.
    I had a verry good deal on the bike...

    Power to weight ratio. My e160 e8000 carbon frame is a bit light than the e160 7000 EP8 aluminium frame with the bigger battery. We sat side by side and with New Zealand 32kph settings left the EP8 standing still which had EU setting when reaching its cut off assist. Travelling at 25kph ended with the same range after the rider fatigued with the cutting on/off. 32kph preserves the motor and battery designed by the manufacturer for optimal intent for uses purposes. The race format is wrong and should be similar to trials motor bike competition which has foot down penalties. My problem is I am gaining muscle mass instead of losing weight atm.
