    Hello,
    After having fun with 3 months of hard unforgiving fun on the last generation bosch cx, I changed to the shimano e8000.
    Two different motors for two different types of riders and terrain.
    Just under 5000km of trouble free riding on the e8000 with it set to American setting (32kmh).
    That difference of 7kmh makes a massive difference out of the trail and the motor has never once complained. Shimano really did do a fantastic job with the e8000 and I agree that innovation needs to increase battery range and lower the weight of the battery.
    A clear and honest review 👍🏼

    U have the E7000 and it is a brilliant motor very underated, its lighter than E8000, has a more natural feel, quieter and has more than enough grunt. I'd like to see a comparison between ep8 & e7000..

      Yes, that would be a nice test!! Santa Cruz on their R build is using the e7000 on the Heckler and the Bullit. Are those bikes too heavy for the e7000?

    Hay Sam, just watched this as I was on a lazy day home :) I recently bought a 2nd hand 2020 Norco Range VLT C2 with the E8000. A mate of mine has a Merida with an EP8 - it was great to see your comments about the two. I love my Norco, it was immaculate and I got it for a great price so knowing it really is not that much "worse" than the EP8 is great! Also I have to say seeing you so short of breath on your hill climb was pretty amusing given how easy ebikes are suppose to make riding. I find that if I put the same amount of effort into riding the ebike as I do the mtb then I still get a bloody good work out! People look at me like I'm putting an act on after a super rapid climb - not to mention pushing through the speed limiter on less steep decents. I hope that all makes sense. Good review :)

    • @SamsBikes
      @SamsBikes  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes mate not really much in it for the ep8 and the e8000 and the most important things is your have an ebike and your riding and yes if you ride a ebike hard you can get a great work out!

    I like your comments on “trying to get your hands on a bike these days, E8000 is worth it at a discount” and also the “was expecting a bit more of a step up from the EP8”. Same here I have a E8000 Meta Power 2018, still so much fun!

    Great Video. One more variable to throw in there are the different battery types. Shimano is still using the older 18650 batteries with the more efficient motor while YT has the newer (and possibly better heat dissipation due to the larger size) 21700 cells with the older less efficient motor. Hmm.. 🤔

  • @captainslow4184

    Personally I would avoid both of them..
    Since Shimano doesn't selling replacement parts to their motors, in case you have a motor failure outside of warranty you can't fix it!
    Shimano is the only motor which is un fixable.
    You can find spare parts for every other motor in the market (bosch, Yamaha, Brose) but not for Shimano....
    I have couple of friends with 2018 Merida e160 900 (E8000 motor) and both of them has to replace the motor on their own expense (1300$) since the out of warranty.
    It's a real shame that many companies still choosing Shimano's motor and even more that Shimano decided not to support their motors after warranty.

    One interesting thing you commented is the power realease. When riding my girlfriend's Levo ( 2017) , down at Derby , I noticed it was very difficult where you were trying to do repeat tight climbing turns ,where you were loading and unloading the pedals . The bike would push the front wheel , sometimes driving the front into the outside of the turn. When you were also trying to avoid rocks, you would hit the rocks on the outside. That makes the quick response not trivial. The same with the delivery lag on the Levo.

    Im going to disagree on the rattle noise. After selling my 2020 eOne sixty 9k for the 2021 model and taking it to thredbo the noise from the rattle/ clunk done my head in. I could hear it over everything even with a full face helmet on. I find it's doesn't feel as powerful as it should.but I found on a recent ride where I would use trail mode I was using eco instead and if I put more effort in I didn't need to change to trail mode on some of the climbs where before I'd be in putting it in trail mode.
    Hopefully a firmware upgrade bumps the power up a little as you said.
    Do I love it the New EP8 ,not really I think they have dropped the ball a little on it compared to the E8000.
    They both have their pros and cons like anything though.

I'm currently riding a Gen 1 Specialized Levo Comp, it's whisper quiet up and down hills but also has the 504wh battery. I guess my question is, do you think I'd notice the loss of range from the more powerful motor and will the noise do my head in? I like to run Hope axles so should be noisy enough to mask the rattle. Hei Sam, you mentioned that there was not a lot of difference between the E8000 and the EP8 on the hill climb challenge (around 5 seconds a minute). However its good to remember that on a EWS-E powerstage like Finale Ligure powerstage 3 that 5 seconds would have been the difference in coming 1st or 15th. Well we are not riding pro are we :) but still its good to make note that the EP8 is a much more worthy motor to take to the EWS-E than the E8000! Reg. Markus

    Rode the EP8 and also hardly noticed a difference but my bike is also slightly lighter. My e160 8000 sat next to the EP8 on a slight incline and with New Zealand 32kph settings left the eP8 behind like it was standing still when we reached EU settings. At 25kph we both got the same range with the EP8 cutting in and out fatiguing the rider. Do I get a EP8 after 5K km motor replacement or do I get a second 500W battery? Can not loose weight as I am gaining muscle mass which is my biggest issue atm.

    Nice one mate, I've been pretty impressed with the range on the EP8, I did about 30km over 2 separated days and only used half of the battery, but I only used in Trail mode. The rattling is a bit annoying for me as its the only noise that my bike makes, not a deal breaker like to said, but its definitely there, mine its on the e160 8000 carbon, but I find the noise its more on the cranks kind of thing, don't think the frame influences it much. I have almost 4000 miles on my Decoy with the E8000. It's been pretty bombproof so far. The only bitch I have about it, is that there is a plug on the motor that has loosened a couple of times and when it happens the thing shuts off completely. I have to drop the motor to reconnect it and add dilectric grease. It's not been a major problem, but was annoying when it happened. They need a more secure way to lock this plug in place. I'd like to ride an EP8 bike, but it's not something I feel like I need at the moment.

    It's funny what you get used to I guess because doesn't Bosch make the run on of the motor a selling point rather than a negative? I have a Brose and appreciate the run on of the motor when climbing, not dangerous at all. I also wonder if trying to make the motor fit the frame to hide the fact it's an ebike is a positive thing when the trade off is making the centre of gravity of all that mass considerably higher?

      @@SamsBikes I've had mine a little over a year , about 2000 miles on it . Luckily no overheat yet. I love how quiet it is. its just silent and very natural feel due to the low torque i guess. It can be a little jerky at times and hard to start from a stop uphill. Id love to try the Orbea Rise with the ep8rs!

    Are the mounting bolt patterns the same so you can install a EP8 in a frame originally housing a E8000?

    Shimano 3 settings is rubbish. Eco and trail are useless. Everyone rides Shimano on Boost all the time. My Yamaha has 5 settings all very different. Auto mod is awesome. Il Stick with Yamaha or Bosch.

      @russelllawson2384 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Brose motor on the levo is infinitely adjustable You can tune each setting to as much or as little as you want including how quickly you want the power to come on or be delayed

      Have you ever tried a Shimano? To me, it seems you haven’t. I have a 2018 Commencal Meta Power with E8000 with over 6000km in it and pretty much never used Boost. I also have a Yamaha PW-X2 and the Auto mode is rubbish compared to the E8000 Trail mode.
