  • Electric bikes are becoming more and more popular worldwide, but are subject to strict laws and regulations to make them legal to ride in public. We already know how fun they are to ride, but just how fast can you ride an unrestricted e-bike? We took Hank and Conor to a private race track to compare it to the speed of a road bike.

"Derestricting an e-bike is hard, you shouldn't do it." That was clearly the BBC talking, it's not hard. manufacturers make it really easy and then just don't document it. This is because of draconian laws designed for mopeds, and to insulate motorists.

It's a meme law and TOTALLY UNENFORCEABLE. If I were ever stopped on my Fiido M1 PRO. For going faster than 15.5mph. In Croydon. I would say okay. Now go and stop every delivery rider using an ebike. They wont and they cant.
I've talked to delivery riders. With souped up bikes using 1000w or more powerful motors. And 52v batteries. And flying around at 25mph PLUS.

actually manufacturers hate you doing this bosch in particular decided to brown nose and hold a sumit between bike manufacturers urging them to make there stuff less able to be modified the issue is its not gonna work so give up
bosch make electronics with motors in leaf blowers drills and other items they dont make software for a living
and if sony ms nintendo apple and google cant even stop determined reverse engineers hacking there shit what hope does bosch have?
people want this and honestly we should just let them have it
      its more dangerous!!!
than what? oh dear someone might fall off and die ok but when did we ever care about that when we allowed motorcyclists to squat on 2400cc of engine and throw there asses down the road at over 100mph?
      what about pedestrians!!!
what about them a ebike is the least of there worrys if there in the road
      there not taxed!!!
grow up and stop being salty that your gas guzzling car has to pay tax for the tarmac you shred up each year alot of ecars are tax free too and ebikes do way less harm to the roads and enviroment than a ev does
      they dont have a license!!!
most people ive spoken to would have no issue obtaining the cbt to ride theese
      they dont have insurance
yeah but youd be upset when you found out how little that hurdle would cost us
      but kids....
yeah no theres already age restrictions on theese so stop pretending like kids will be ripping around causing havoc on theese cause its already illigal for them to use them
meanwhile goverment wants us all to be greener get evs and shit well here we are with a solution many are ready to adopt
unlie electric cars theese are accisible and workable for the parts of society that cant have EVS for example those who live in flats who cant charge there cars in the car parkk those who cant afford a brand new car and those who dont want a car
      there cheaper transport
greener transport (despite power coming from coal just like EV's unlie evs there lighter and use less power to get the rider around than a EV which carrys you plus several tonnes of your car meanwhile my little motor just has to move me and my sub 15kg bike frame .... and maybe a pizza!

It was very interesting to see how much faster an e-bike is compared to a regular bike. I'm totally for e-bikes. It expends the pool of people who can ride with me. I'm a strong cyclist and my wife, my kids and a lot of my friends can't keep up with me unless they use an e-bike. It's a win-win. @@EricLoic I ride with e-bike riders often. On one recent ride one of them took a corner too fast and come off breaking a rib. On another ride the Tail end charley was on an e-bike. He was happy to go slowly. But one of the other e-bikers came back to him for a chat. They got into a deep and meaningful chat and before they were aware were speeding off into the distance. I had to struggle to speed up and catch them and was breathless at 25kph.They were so deep in their conversation they were unaware of the cycling. Yesterday I came across a snake on the path when I was 2 meters from it. I could deviate around easily but if I was on an e-bike going faster the snake would have been in my spokes. I have nothing against e-bikes and expect to own one when I reach 60 but I do think people get them and don't understand they are a completely different beast to a non motorised bike.

Hank could literally lap him and finish the full race twice before he does. Also a fact most wouldn't know w/o having one the battery dying hardly matters. The e-bikes are still high-end bikes with good gearing and would still be much faster than the average bike on no battery. So worst case Hank's battery dies and it's slightly worse than Mark's bike but while he has the batteries it's like 3x better.

But yeah, as an E-Bike rider it's amazing how "heavy" they get when that battery finally conks out, I've done a couple rides where I deplete the battery and still had a kilometer or 2 of modestly steep mountain cutoff to climb to get back home, no regrets though, it was a fun ride and good exercise

I don't think, that a 100 mile course is reasonable for a test. Sure, it probably won't make a hundred miles, but that isn't the use case. ebikes are either for the commuter who don't wants to go to work by car, or more elderly people, who just want wo be kind of self sustained and mobile. E race bikes are, in a way, the same. My Gf has an e road bike, cause iam much fitter, but still we can go for some bike tours and she doesn't need to "fight" every hill, just to keep up with me, or I don't need to get slower. @@vonwycliffezebadiahleones2535 Yes. And if Si loses to the e-bike, then put him in the Milan against the e-bike. Or just add laps until the battery dies :-D

@@vonwycliffezebadiahleones2535 Si beat Manon in the recumbent. Different story ;-) Although it is funny. I really have the impression that since those GCN episodes came out, I see more road and TT bike riders trying to chase me in the Milan :-) If any of you are reading this: Thanks for the fun! ;-)

I haven't finished watching this yet but the tyres on the Canyon are going to slow it down fairly considerably too. Would have been interesting if they were both on similar bikes and tyres!

Conor’s Irish color bike is really cool. Ebike vs Si’s TT bike coming up. Make it a long race over 36k to factor battery life.

I'm in the US, I ride an older e-bike. (I'm older too)
Road bikes pass me all the time. LoL.
