    There is the potential on the Toyota side to have dealers disable the fake engine noise in tech stream per customer request.

      They should just offer different sound profiles that you can select from. And maybe the ability to upload your own. And then aftermarket shops would have the ability to sell "tuned" engine noises.

    Am I the only one who waits for SavageGeese to review a car? Most other reviewers just do this: montage of exterior with horrible royalty-free music, then interior AKA “ugh there’s too much hard touch plastic wah”, they go for a drive and it feels like they read off of a script the manufacturer gives them, finally they give a very copy&paste opinion of the vehicle. SavageGeese has been killing it since day one and I’m glad to have seen this channel grow the way it did. You keep doing you Geese you’re great

      I highly agree. I recently got a 10th gen Civic Si, and I was watching a bunch of reviews for them. I know the video is 4 years old now, but the review for that car on this channel exceeds any review I can find on the car. I watched several other reviewers like Matt Maran and Redline Reviews, but their reviews came off like how you said, like they just copy and pasted an opinion and recited the same exact stuff from every other video.

    • @markmiller3279
      @markmiller3279 3 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      Uh, no, can't imagine it. People who prefer manuals make up such a small percentage of the population for good reasons. It isn't fun driving a manual in stop-and-go traffic or from stop sign to stop sign in a city. The opportunities to enjoy shifting are too infrequent for them to be popular.

    • @Gurka84
      @Gurka84 3 ปีที่แล้ว +66

      @@markmiller3279 You suck. But you are right, the world sucks just like you. In an ideal world people could drive and enjoy a manual, it’s not a pain in trafiic like you and people around you suggest, you are just making an elephant out of a fly. Too bad you ruin this amazing experience, real enjoyable and engaging driving MUST have a stick in it

    • @wizrish
      @wizrish 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @@markmiller3279 I believe gearing plays a huge role in what you mentioned about not being able to shift as much. Also, While it is not as easy as an automatic in heavy traffic, you can always have a decent gap from the car in front and neutral it. But if 90% of driving is in heavy traffic then yes, automatics have a come long way to be a viable option. Most people go through heavy traffic for 20-30%. Which is still manageable with a manual.

    • @shinobusensui9395
      @shinobusensui9395 3 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      @@markmiller3279 it only sucks because of the typical automatic driver. Traffic is usually at a bottleneck due to a badly designed infrastructure but ultimately due to bad drivers. The lack of proper spacing, the lack of understanding of which lanes a person can cross (too many people hold up traffic trying to cross double yellow), the huge delays at pulling away from a standstill due to looking at the phone or whatnot, bad lane positioning (slower cars sticking to the left)

      That's not different from what affordable sports cars have ever been. The old British sports cars were just the bits from their saloons (Brit for sedan) on a cut-down ladder frame with lower body. Same with the early Japanese sports cars, including the 240Z (rear suspension from the 510 and engine was the 510's 4 banger taken out to 6 cylinders). One reason the Miata has stayed in production is bits shared with their sedans - and Honda's great sports cars have dropped out of production because they have shared nothing with higher volume cars.

    ND2 makes the most sense to me. Most fun car to drive day to day IMO and is plenty “practical” for what it is being a 2- seater roadster. I’ve always LOVED S2K’s driven two AP2’s an 05 and 07’ and was really impressed, super fun car. I was sad to see 2009’ being the final year Honda was to produce the S2K. I owned a 2012’ NC2 MX-5 Miata 6MT for 5 years and absolutely adored the little car at the time although I was never convinced the MX-5 was an absolute better alternative to the late Honda S2000.
    I felt like perhaps I missed an opportunity by passing on a good used example (09’ S2K) for a brand new NC2/ 12’ MX-5 Miata. Fast forward to late May (my 42nd BD) this year I leave the local Mazda dealership in a new Poly-metal grey 2021’ Mazda MX-5 Miata Club w/ Brembo/ BBS/ Recaro package and I do not have any doubts that he ND2 provides every bit as much driving fun and more vs. the legendary Honda S2000.
    If you are fan of the S2000 I think most would be more than pleased getting behind the wheel of an ND2, especially in terms of being a daily driver. The car is fun everywhere and makes plenty of power! 5.7 seconds to 60 and 14.4 1/4m is not far off the S2K plus there’s much more usable power in the lower / mid-range.
    As far as the BRZ / FRS are concerned, I’ve never driven one but don’t doubt that they would probably make more sense for most people just concerning the issue of “practically”. However, it isn’t like the MX-5 Miata has no room to put stuff, the “glovebox” is positioned in a somewhat awkward location but is fairly accommodating. The “trunk” although just 4.6 cubic feet is actually quite accommodating as well, a couple weeks worth of groceries, a weekend getaway, etc. no problem. It really just depends on YOU and what YOUR lifestyle requires in the end.
    Oh so if you happen to be say 6’4 or taller I think you’ll probably find the interior a bit “cramped” setting in an ND2. In this case, I probably wouldn’t even have the ND2 on my list of possibles. For reference I’m a skinny 5’9 guy and feel like the ND2’s was almost designed around my frame / fits like a glove.

Love the production quality and the forensic level of detail you guys put into when analysing these cars. I shared this video on 86 forums and reddit to support the TH-cam algorithm. I think its important that we get as many enthusiasts informed correctly with knowing Toyota, Subaru and Mazda's intentions when developing their lightweight RWD sports cars. The more people who watch this video, the more people will likely buy these cars new, and hopefully we can continue to see these low-profit niche products in the future, before the UK and Japanese Government impose bans on new petrol car sales by 2030. Agreed 100%. Earlier this summer we sold the DD we had, planning on picking up another DD when the “price is right.” Yeah, that’s another story in itself. Anyway, we gave ourselves until end of October to do so and planned to drive the S2000 for commutes. I also have Ohlins on the S2000, and adjusted them from 7-clicks to 15-clicks (larger number = softer) for the commutes. After 2 weeks my wife and I were so tired of the rackets and lack of modern conveniences, and the horrible DC streets were killing our backs (and realized that we aren’t in our 20’s anymore). We ended up buying our new DD 2.5 months ahead of schedule and the S2000’s status of garage queen/weekend/track car has been restored.

      Are Toyota/Subaru understating the new car's HP figure? 160 whp sounds about right for 205 bhp, so 209 whp would be over 267 bhp which is an extremely healthy figure for such a tiny lightweight car!

    • @echos5823
      @echos5823 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I heard that GT86 usually make 170whp... but ofc with less than 10whp difference compared to 162, it could just be different dyno.
      Also, I am pretty sure that Toyota is underrating their cars here.GR86 officially have 228hp at engine, so 209whp means the drivetrain loss etc is only 9.16%, LESS than 10%! So either Toyota underrated the GR, or the GR86 is using some seriously good gearbox.

    • @WongTag
      @WongTag 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Catching some of the news about the new WRX and plenty of confusion on how it's gone from a 2.0 to a 2.4 without significant improvement. So how does an NA 2.4 make 209hp at the wheel, 267hp at the crank per @Oetti, yet only make 271hp at the crank with a turbo added according to Subaru? I'm starting to suspect Subaru's small size as a company has real consequences in their ability to play the same market-splitting games as the big boys. It's as if they are being terribly ham fisted in their attempt to allow for future differentiation between models and products; which is something Porsche is supreme at for the opposite example where the engineering and marketing are mirrored.

    Wonderful review. Gonna give it the first year to let it get through first production issues and let the aftermarket start tinkering...a 2023 GR86 in that lovely Neptune Blue is looking like the perfect daily. I am glad this car got a second gen, and I am glad it stayed naturally aspirated. Hoping we can see about 230rwhp with the usual header/tune mods.

    Finally the GR86 takes the win in the drag race. Though the drag race still makes the Miata look very impressive. The least amount of horsepower among the cars tested yet gets a solid 2nd place.
    In an era of massive power numbers people really tend to overlook weight reduction.

      Love lightweight cars and happy to support them. The ND2 softtop is just above 2330lbs, 5.7s 0-60. The GR86 is reported to be 5.9-6.1s but in videos I see so far, GR86 stays ahead.

    Wow! A S2000 that is almost 20 years old, with some good track tires, is still the king around the track. Talk about engineering! What a car!

      @harrybuhse8622 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It certainly holds up well, but it has 255s where the gr has 215s, aftermarket shocks and a big brake kit. It'll definitely get surpassed when the gr has those same modifications

      @@harrybuhse8622 Savagegeese clearly stated the S2000 was the better performing track car. The fact that it's 20 years old and is faster with tires and brakes is absolutely absurd

    • @harrybuhse8622
      @harrybuhse8622 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GERONIMO326 not really. In today's market the s2000 would be $10k more, and competing in a segment slightly lower than the Nissan Z. It's a brilliant car don't get me wrong though. Would have been an absolute steal buying one a few years ago for $20k. In saying that, I know for a fact with no more than some standard track modifications the gr86 would be right on par with it.

    • @GERONIMO326
      @GERONIMO326 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@harrybuhse8622 you're missing the point champ, the fact the S2000 is 20 years old, and is even competing with the 2022 GR86 is ABSURD!! That in itself is engineering at it's finest! Not to mention, Subaru, and Toyota tuned their car, and benchmarked the S2000, and it's still not as good 20 years later. Some say, the S2000 is one of, if not the most engaging car ever made. Just an engineering marvel. It should NOT be beating any cars (within it's segment) 20 years later 🤣 tires, brakes or no tires and brakes

    • @harrybuhse8622
      @harrybuhse8622 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GERONIMO326 it's really not absurd at all. The formula for a sports car hasn't changed in all of that time. Money is the limitation, not technology. It doesn't help that most manufacturers haven't been interested in this segment for 10 years or more also. So the fact that Toyota/Subaru has been able to package a car with similar performance for significantly less than the s2000 is more remarkable imo. Dealing with modern emission and safety regulations as well as coming as a 2+2 coupe to keep insurance costs down, it's an incredible package.

    209whp * 1.15 for drivetrain losses = 240hp crank. So basically it’s still a 100hp/liter engine. Very nice 😎

    • @moldyrefrigerator
      @moldyrefrigerator 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve seen 2022 BRZ’s hitting 215whp-219whp. Of course every dyno measures different, but these things might even be hitting 250hp crank. That puts it on equal footing with the MKV Supra 2.0L’s 255hp, so no wonder they’re underrating the GR86/BRZ power numbers.

    People's minds have been polluted over the years by the ever increasing and ridiculous HP and 0 to 60 race. Any vehicle that can do a 6 second Sprint is "quick" and you can have fun with it.

      It's all numbers on a page to 95% of the car buying public anyway. We were doing 0-60 in the low eight second range in all our favorite cars from back in the day and having a blast for one very simple reason: feedback. Doing 0-60 in three seconds in a private jet is boring as hell, but 0-60 at all in a go kart is a thrill like no other.
