  • I'm rebuilding the Wltoys 124019 RTR RC Buggy 1/12 2.4G 4WD to make sure it is reliable. It is the next gen 144001. I will be doing incremental modifications such as motor swaps, suspension changes, and advanced electronics. I may even be doing some speed runs with a slick aero body to see how fast I can make this car go. There will be numerous videos for this buggy!

      These cars are a great way to get started in the RC hobby. It's a good place to start while you acquire the various tools, and skills needed before moving on to better kits. It's also a great place to start if you're not sure you want to make a larger investment or if you want to move on to competing in RC car racing.

    A few days ago I decided I wanted a budget friendly first Rc car that preforms well. So I googled it and found these watched a bunch of videos and ordered a 124018 the next night. I’m sure it’ll fast enough for now but I really like that it can be upgraded and faster later on and still be budget friendly.

    The screws that go into the control arm is not a height adjustment, they are called droop adjustment screws, it limits how much the arm moves when the suspension is unloaded to control the attitude when leaving a jump, not ride height, ride height is adjustable by the shock spring collars.

      Please do... my initial advice would be to NOT do upgrades right away and instead, invest in the tools you'll need to grow in the hobby... a good set of hex and socket type drivers, tools for suspension tuning, extra batteries, a 2-4 at a time battery charger... check out my video on the dangers of lipos... I'll put a link below. And, I'm going to include links to several sources on suspension tuning... This is the most important area of RC cars, especially if you'd like to try racing on and/or off road cars, trucks, & buggies.

      For the money, it's a sweet little buggy. A few upgrades build in a lot of reliability. You should definitely follow my lead and at least rebuild the diffs with silicone diff fluid. The 7000/5000 front/rear seems to work well. Start there and maybe go up a bit later, but I'd continue to run a bit of a stiffer front diff... but hey, it's your car so experiment and see what you like. Make sure to check your suspension setting: camber, toe, etc. before you do first runs. BTW, everyone who has commented about their diffs say theirs were dry to, so definitely rebuild them. If money it tight, just get a small bottle of 7000 weight silicone diff fluid and put in both diffs.

    I love ur videos. I'm so glad I found ur channel for my project in mind. My project in mind is to have a really nice rc car for a body of my choice and that's a 14 inch toy story rc car. The wheel base is exactly the same as the original toy story cheap car so I was very pleased when I found the wltoys 12- cant remember the rest atm, so fell in love with this project right away. @MyRCChannel-CJScott  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure, ask away and I'll do my best to answer. BTW, it sounds like a fun project to make an RC version of the toy story car. I've been thinking about making a large scale model of the moon rover, but getting high detail models/dolls of the NASA suits is the really hard part. It would involve a lot of custom fabrication. Maybe someday. I got inspired during the 50th anniversary year of the moon landing.

      @@johnstuart2268 Do you own or have you considered buying a 3D printer? For the kinds of custom projects you like, it would come in handy. I have an Ender 3 and it was money well spent. I've made all kind of things for the hobby and some handy stuff for the house. For example, we were propping things in the hallway to block the dogs from going back upstairs while we were cooking dinner... we wanted to keep them in the living room. I took one of the panels from a high end dog crate, wood frame with metal bars. I made a set of feet that clamp around the wood frame so it is free standing. When we want to block the end of the hallway, we just move it in place. Made the wife very happy. I even used a filament that has 20-30% wood pulp so the feet I printed resemble dark wood. On this buggy, the servo has a non-standard connecter and has 5 wires instead of 3 so I needed to use a different servo. I 3D printed a new servo mount so I could use the original holes in the chassis. You'll see what I mean in the next video... should be done tomorrow or Tuesday.

    • @MyRCChannel-CJScott
      @MyRCChannel-CJScott  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@johnstuart2268 Having tried a few mods, and run into issues with some of their parts not fitting properly, I'd rebuild the diffs, freshen the shocks IF you think you want to go with different fluid, add the droop screws, tune/adjust the suspension, and leave it at that. At 34mhp, it's already plenty fast and unless you already have a better radio, I'd leave it at that. In my next video, you'll see what I mean. I had a ton of problems doing a motor swap. And because of the way it's designed, you can't change the gear ratios... the motor can't be moved in relation to the drive gear so the pinion gear can't be changed. The only way to make it go faster would be to put in a motor capable of higher RPMs and there is a limit to that... It's a nice buggy as is with those few upgrades. Make it reliable and save your money for a kit that's better to start. I wouldn't worry to much about the hardware since the car can only be molded so far. Some things are proprietary... for example the servo is not wired like a standard servo... it has 5 wires instead of 3 so when I swapped out the ESC/receiver, I had to put in a new servo. I had a micro servo with metal gears, but I had to design and 3D print a new servo mount. That's a lot of time, money, and work to put into a $115 car.

      @MyRCChannel-CJScott  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's possible, you'd need to drill new holes for the existing plastic battery "blocks" so you can remount them further apart. Then there is the possible issue of width being a problem. It depends on the specific battery you are trying to use. Moding these cars is fine for bashing and experimenting, but you can only get so much out of this car without changing it to the point that it doesn't resemble the original. It's better to run it as is, or invest in a real car by a name brand. The tires are it's biggest problem and getting even a descent set of 1/10 wheels and tires costs about $70. It's just not worth it... I recommend enjoying the car as is... get an extra stock pack or two and have fun.

    I live in China they have a full 5200kv brushless conversion available with a lot of metal upgrades on the gears etc with the purchasing the car its about 100$ extra. Do I have to upgrade the battery if I go brushless to optimize its power or is the standard battery fine?

    • @MyRCChannel-CJScott
      @MyRCChannel-CJScott  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The standard battery is fine. We race a lot of heavier cars and trucks on 2s batteries. If the ESC allows for it, you could go to 3s but you'll have to find one that has the same length and width as the stock battery. Or you could find a 2s with a higher Mah rating... that will last longer while giving the same level of power.

    • @MyRCChannel-CJScott
      @MyRCChannel-CJScott  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @MAD GRUMPYMAN Agreed, the problem is there aren't a lot of options in batteries that will fit in these buggies. The videos I've seen where people have done big upgrades, they have all had to hack the car up... Personally, I want to do more than just go up and down a parking lot for top speed. THey are also spending a lot of money into a $120 platform. Not worth it in my opinion. But hey, whatever floats their boat. Some people like to bash, some like to race, some some people build "shelf queens" that never get driven.

    I know you advise on plastic wear and damage parts, but I'm planning on building out a 124018 to outrun my dog at the dog park. Since I'm building it with the occasional dog chomping on it, the more parts I have on it that are metal, the better, right?

    • @MyRCChannel-CJScott
      @MyRCChannel-CJScott  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Short answer, NO... longer answer, PLEASE DON't DO THIS!!! My wife and I have 2 dogs, so I know that some dogs like to chase and chew. But, RC cars have a lot of crevices in which a dog's tooth could get caught and broken. Small parts can be detached and swallowed causing internal injury or necessitating very expensive surgery. The worst case scenario would be the dog puncturing the lipo and having it explode in the dog's mouth.
      On the surface it seems like a fun idea, but I strongly recommend that you don't do it!
      Get a bunch of cheap frisbees, or build a pneumatic tennis ball gun to shoot balls down range for your dog to chase.
      You'd also be teaching your dog that eating RC cars is approved behavior... the dog will see all fast moving colorful objects as owner approved targets. He/She might destroy some kids favorite toy which you'll be responsible for.
      Dogs with extremely heightened prey instincts need extra training to limit that behavior and to limit the "menu" of things you allow them to chase and "kill". That menu needs to be specific and very limited so the dog understands that there are many things you don't want him/her to catch and kill.
      On a positive note, you obviously like spending time with your dog and are looking for fun ways to exercise and entertain him/her. So, good for you on that! Get your pup lots of frisbees and tennis balls and work on your throwing arm.. save the extra money for a possible rotator cuff injury ;-)
      After thinking about it more, it would be great training to make your dog stay in a sit position while you run the car around... then reward him with praise and by throwing balls for him to chase. Them repeat. That way you'll teach him/her to only chase things that you approve of
      Regards,
      CJ

      @@MyRCChannel-CJScott well... I could probably keep it outside the fence when other dogs are around. My dog doesn't bite it at all... She will bark and herd it, if I stop. And run away from it, if I drive toward her. She's not ball or toy driven. She races cars and bikes to the back lot.

    • @MyRCChannel-CJScott
      @MyRCChannel-CJScott  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mrkimpham That's cool, I'm familiar with the herding instinct too. Maybe if you covered the body in heavy closed cell foam... like a nerf car. I'd go with a vehicle like a short course truck where the body covers the suspension arms versus a buggy.
      I'm still not comfortable with the idea because it could teach bad behavior and lead to unintended consequences, but it's up to you. Plastic will be less likely to injure the dogs mouth than aluminum parts.
      I'd also be wary of doing this at a public dog park where other dogs are present... again, unintended consequences. It's a litigious world and people love playing the victim.
      How about setting up a motorized zipline with a stuffed furry toy hanging from a teather... you could use your radio to run it back and forth towing the stuffed toy across the yard and back.

I road race and the club has a class called "Truck"... anything goes as long as it started as a truck, runs on 2s and has rubber tires. I start with an LCG Slash roller and over last season, I modded it to the point where it is now an aluminum chassis, has 1/8 scale GT shocks, wheels & tires and has a street car body... ride height is about 10mm and all that's left of the Slash is the diffs, diff cases, center diff and driveshaft. I just finished building a 1/10 touring chassis and setting it up for VTA (Vintage Trans Am), I'm building a Associated RC10 SC6.2 and a RC10 B74.1d. I'd get the same size battery that the buggy comes with. You could go from 2S to 3 S, but you'll probably burn out the ESC and/or motor. You can go up in mAh (milli-amps), but you're changing the physical size of the battery and it might not fit. The battery area is tight.
      Here is a link to a two pack of batteries that will fit and have the same connector... they are a direct swap.

      Here is a video I did on lipo safety and best practices. I strongly recommend that you get a charger that has a "Storage" mode.

      Sorry for the late reply. I didn't see your comment.
      The gears are the last link in the description... this is a strange page. There are little thumbnail images below the price. By selecting them, you're selecting different parts like the gears, or the aluminum diff housings.
      The white grease is excellent. I've used it on many kits and swear by it. Here is a link to it on AMain Hobbies: www.amainhobbies.com/protek-rc-premier-white-friction-noise-reducing-gear-grease-lubricant-10ml-ptk-1412/p469153

      BTW, in the event you're looking for another car, WLToys has a new buggy similar to the 124, but it's bigger... in fact, it's a true 1/10 scale 4wd buggy. It's available now for preorder. I ordered one myself and will be doing videos on it as soon as it arrives. Here's a link: shop.makerfire.com/products/wltoys-104001-car?_pos=1&_sid=47c177d8c&_ss=r

    Can you just install a new rx and tx with the esc that comes with it?

      It’s been a while since I worked on this buggy. I believe the receiver and ESC are one unit. So to use a different transmitter you’ll need to replace the receiver and the ESC. The stock ESC doesn’t have any settings so it’s worth it.
      Thanks for watching, Happy New Year!

    I just got mine 3rd day i had it i hit my mail box and the front left shock force of the impact pushed on my drive shaft and bent it slightly. If it bent it anymore id have to buy new drive shafts for it but. My car does the same with the shell leaning on one side do to the receiver being higher.. but one question I'm new to the rc world of things. But are the front tires supposed to sag in the front? Like bow inwards like that?

    • @MyRCChannel-CJScott
      @MyRCChannel-CJScott  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry to hear about the crash. You should definitely replace the driveshaft! If it is bent at all, it will send vibrations into the connected assemblies and eventually damage them. While you are at it, get yourself some spare parts for the front end... they are not expensive and having spares will allow you to fix damage without having to wait for parts to arrive. A pair of axles is about $7, you can replace all the front plastic parts for about $10... I'd recommend getting a couple pairs of each piece. Note that the 124019 uses the same suspension parts as the 144001. I'll leave the links to the parts in another reply...
      The front and rear wheels should have about 1 degree of negative camber... in other words, the tops lean in but it's a slight lean... you should watch the video where I discuss tuning this cars suspension. It's part 4 and here is the link:
      th-cam.com/video/tnLdywZhtEc/w-d-xo.html
      Since you are new, here is some homework for you ;-)
      Below are links to manuals that will teach you about RC car suspension, how it works, and how to tune it. You'll need to familiarize yourself with terms like camber, caster, toe, oversteer, understeer, bump-steer, etc. You'll also need a few tools like a camber gauge, a ride height gauge, etc.

      @@MyRCChannel-CJScott hi, happy new year to you too, thanks for the reply, I'm looking to upgrade the shocks to all metal ones as I broke my sons shock on his 124019 at the top where it is plastic, super glued it back into place for now. Most shocks I'm seeing are universal and the same size for front and rear but the originals shocks seem to be different sizes. I would also like to replace the wheel hub to metal ones and the front bumpers and maybe have a few spairs here as I've just ordered myself the 124017 v2 for myself

      @@raycorrigan7585 Here is a link to the front shock replacement... it's a single shock and front only. These cars are not the best quality... and that's an understatement. A lot of parts just aren't available.

      If you're just looking for fun RC cars and you're not planning on doing any racing, I suggest looking at the RedCat line of buggies and trucks. If you're on a tight budget, go with the 1/10th scale vehicles... but I highly recommend going with the brushless versions... they electronics are better and many other parts are upgraded. It's better to buy a good car/truck up front than to try to upgrade something cheap. If you've got grassy areas to run in versus dirt, I recommend spending more on the 1/8 scale vehicles and go with the truck/monster truck options... they handle the thick grass much better. Again, better to spend more up front and have a good experience than to go budget and not have it work out well.
