Professor Jordan Peterson is a Canadian psychology professor, author, and TH-cam personality. He is well-known for his bestselling book 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos, as well as his podcast and many viral TH-cam videos. A self-described ‘classic British liberal’ and ‘traditionalist’, Peterson argues against the rise of political correctness and safe spaces, which he claims have swept many North American universities. He has also controversially argued against the Canadian Government introducing ‘gender identity and expression’ as a prohibited ground of discrimination.
ABOUT THE OXFORD UNION SOCIETY: The Oxford Union is the world's most prestigious debating society, with an unparalleled reputation for bringing international guests and speakers to Oxford. Since 1823, the Union has been promoting debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but across the globe.

It's not really a win for free speech. Free speech is about being allowed to speak even if no one agrees. But the room is filled with his supporters and admirers, clearly. There will be many opponents looking at this and plotting how they can stop this happening again.

He reads all the stuff he knows, then teaches students. Like any normal university teacher. I hope I don't live to see the day when I start questioning mathematical equations because I hate the teacher who teaches me math. This is exactly what's happening.
BTW you have never met me, don't know any single thing about me. And you see my username and just assume I'm a fragment of your imagination in a second. I chose this username before I got to know who JP is. SMH!

@@saucylight th-cam.com/video/Fd2wKn6-X_A/w-d-xo.html It's a long video but it probably explains it in the most detail(though the article that was written subsequently I don't think reflected this interview in the slightest!). Quite hard to give a short explanation but he was prescribed benzodiazepines and then went into pretty nasty withdrawals when trying to come off them, amongst other things with his family such as his wife being diagnosed with terminal cancer, though she subsequently recovered.

    • @Jaze2022
      @Jaze2022 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

@@saucylight in addition to Sam's comment, his family struggled with severe chronic health issues and only in recent years did most problems went away because of a severely limited diet. This is also when he stuck his neck out and stood up to the nonsense in society. He was well received but there was also loud criticism.
I think his story can be summarized like this: life long illness in his family, everyone got better at the same time he seemed to be doing the most good in his life, but his daughter falls severely ill again, just as she recovers, her wife was diagnosed with terminal cancer, after surgery, there was a life threatening complication from the surgery, all the while, JBP became more and more dependent on prescribed meds which was severely addictive and not as advertised. He tried to quit and it nearly killed him.
JBP was pretty much Abraham from the bible. After his ordeal above, the spirit of cain loomed over head and he lost some faith. So he needed the warm welcome, as much as we need him to return.

Proof Eucharist is body of Jesus Christ and Virgin Mary is his mother.
48I am the bread of life.
49Your ancestors ate the manna in the desert, but they died;z
50this is the bread that comes down from heaven so that one may eat it and not die.
51I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.”a
52The Jews quarreled among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us [his] flesh to eat?”
53Jesus said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you.
54Whoever eats* my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day.
55For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.
56Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him.
57Just as the living Father sent me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of me.b

He changed quite significantly, but not entirely. But that's what the things he went through do to you. He had, and still has to some extent, to deal with a lot of stress and depression. Not speaking of the physical problems. But he has maybe even as much energy, just honed and aimed at different goals.

The fundamentally fascinating thing about Mr. Peterson is that he is not just a machine that randomly produces 'smart and know-it-all' information, but a person that neutrally tries to discuss (interactively and genuinely) different perspectives on matters, questions, and statements. If you have seen more than one video of his opinion and interpretation on certain matters, you can see that he is consistently saying the same things but applied to different situations, and they do make sense indeed. Moreover, instead of being offended, annoyed, or even scared by questions, reactions, and interpretations, he is responding rather interested and challenged with the goal of creating a form of common knowledge everyone can learn from. This is a rare characteristic that you do not see often and I, personally, find admiring.

More as in pride because it gave me a good feeling seeing kindness and good wishes to another human being after little but years of negativity. A civil society certainly has dissent- but nothing but dissent is a hellscape. The arc of civilization has never been but an arc- we are all stupid and foolish to not see and cherish the gifts we have. So it is not patronizing- it is a sincere wish and hope that my college age child and those at this talk see far more complexity in the world- more beauty in the world than the miserable critical people who believe they are noble and some new society of wonder will rise in its place. Western rome felt the same and thereafter no one could read or fix a road or figure out what giant build the aqueducts- Nineveh fell and locals didn’t even know it’s name several generations later. She has job offers from around the world. My goal is only her happiness whether that be running a hedge fund or home raising kids. Really doesn’t matter. But true, no society civil or barbarian without children. The beauty of kids is you become less self centered and you do feel a greater responsibility to the society you leave them to do the same. So women are told that they are " only valued and valuable until 23 years old while she is ripe for breeding ".
      You sound somewhat bitter.
Yet you are promoting the idealogy (I presume) that says women have no value at any age other than being quasi men.
Guess what, women are more valuable because they can have children, (as well as everything else). And I, as a women, would never ever denigrate or give up that value.
But now we have to listen to men telling us that they too can become "women" just because they feel like it, can dominate sports, can invade women's spaces ect.
So who here is devalueing who?
And so what if not everybody wants traditional gender roles to continue, if that's a minority of people then you are just going to have to suck it up. What makes "you" so important that "you" get to change everybody else?

It's simply that after dying to defeat the Balrog, a divine authority sent his soul back to the living world, and granted him further strength and authority."

Vintage Peterson! It astounds me how all of the scientific knowledge dancing through this lecture maps on quite perfectly to Dante’s Commedia: imitation, attention, perception, seeing (the most repeated word ‘lo sguardo’) and always looking up to the stars at the end of each cantica.
Like Dante, Peterson is digging into many domains of knowledge weaving them together. And he even has the Italian hand gestures, which certainly add verve and vitality.

His ideas on us imitating the ideal by creating hierarchies, and the very concept of God existing (at the top of this hierarchy) for the sake of imitating a higher ideal weather or not God exists is amazing to come across as we ponder the formation of morality. His responses in the Q&A are simply divine. WATCH THE WHOLE THING!

The world needs more philosophers like Dr. Peterson. He's doing a good service by introducing young people to philosophy. You, too, can be a philosopher. The love of wisdom is the most powerful freedom one can have. But as a beginner where do you start? Well, I recommend starting with the classics such as Plato's Republic and working your way up. Having a good foundation with the classics will help you develop your philosophical understanding more easily. It's kind of like a cheat sheet because once you've read Plato your mind is quickly opened. Try it.

I was pinned to my seat, analyzing every word he said and blown away by the amount of information that exists in his precise speech. I think the reason behind his complicated and detailed explanations is that he has gone through all of these concepts so many times in his mind (through thinking or rethinking by teaching it to other people) and therefore he is able to grasp these ideas in all their entirety and analyze them from many aspects.

He is from predominantly working class ( apologies for such profanity) background and seems prepossessed in explaining through his deep understanding of the human condition , to all those complacent enough to consider themselves competent in their misplaced understanding of the world . May Lord Jesus Christ grant him good health & long life.

26:29 - 26:35 Hard right hand to the nose there. I understand Mr. Peterson. Thank you for taking the time to articulate an explanation for why it is so profound/awe inspiring.

Love this guy. He was clearly nervous throughout this presentation and he himself has the integrity to be his own harshest judge. In these troubled times he provides essential balance.

He is a science denying con artists who lies through his teeth, essential balance??? don't make me laugh, he runs around the world doing his darndest to manufacture consent against any change by telling individuals they should blame themselves for systemic problems. Stop swallowing bullshit, you will do the world a favor.

@@michaelfern4079 I will leave you the same reply I left the last person whose knee jerk reaction to having their beliefs challenged led them to calling me a communist.
      1. Not a communist
      2. There is no requirement to be a communist to be an avid critique of the failures of capitalism nor is there a need to be a communist in order to be an avid critic of Mr Petersons lies, half truths, and general bulls**t.
      3. And even if I were a communist, that would not alter in any way the facts of the matter I have presented.
      4. Due to having no counter argument to facts of reality you do what many of your mind do, you try to delegitimize the person who says something that compromises your personal beliefs in an individual or institution due to that lack of actual counter argument to what was said. Works well in the school playground, not so much for grown adults in the actual world however.

ArmyOfAll Capitalism is a Marxist term to begin with. But you say you’re not a communist so what your political views? Green?

@@michaelfern4079 Does it matter? Just because you can't address their point you have to go on this silly tangent to distract. Sad.
