  • This interview was not conducted to be a stand-alone interview, it was conducted for a Dutch documentary about male/female-dynamics in Canada. Within this documentary, we explored how an event like the Toronto van attack could happen in Canada and how Canadians are trying to heal from it. More broadly, we looked at misogyny and violence against women within Canada, and what it is about contemporary feminism that makes some men angry or lost. We also paid attention to men suffering from violence that their female partners had inflicted upon them. As prominent Canadian voices, we included both Margaret Atwood and Jordan Peterson.
Psychology professor Jordan Peterson has become a controversial figure ever since speaking out against Bill C-16 (2016), a law which adds gender expression and gender identity to the Canadian Human Rights Act. He has received both praise and criticism after the publication of his self-help book 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos (2018). His fans are thankful for the advice he’s given them to take responsibility for their lives, his critics argue that his emphasis on the danger posed by ‘postmodern neo-marxists’ is dangerous in itself. He has been accused of being anti-feminist and feeding into the alt-right. While he gained support among people who do identify with the alt-right, he himself does not.
Peterson has become an important inspiration for various men’s groups, an influential voice. Therefore, we wanted to get clear where he stands on contemporary feminism and how he interprets the van attack, which took place in the city he lives in. Since the documentary episode only allowed for brief passages from the interview, while Peterson’s answers are extensive, we decided to provide the entire interview.
We talked to Peterson on the 4th of June 2019, in Toronto, Ontario. Since there were some breaks (for adjusting the camera and for having coffee) during the interview, it consists of multiple takes. Apart from leaving out the breaks themselves and making the transition between breaks more fluent, no further editing has been done.
The documentary about the Toronto van attack and male-female dynamics in Canada is available here: • Toxic masculinity in C...

This man has literally saved my life. I was 17, diagnosed with anxiety disorder, severe depression, ptsd, destructive habits, no father, a mother working all day, helping to raise a younger sister, high school drop out, getting in trouble with the police, somehow came across one of his videos and I haven’t stopped listening to him ever since. He has his college lectures on physiology on TH-cam and they have opened my frame of reference to what I was going through and how life actually could be different with hard work, dedication, and self awareness. my life has ever since took a turn for the better in all areas. I continued my search for knowledge on truth, reality, and logic and It’s because of this man that I have been able to start my journey. No words could express my gratitude for this man and his family as it takes a village. Now at 22 I’m able to finally see the light of seriously being the woman I could have only dreamed of when he introduced the idea of creating a heaven for yourself. seriously this man saved my life and I’m constantly reminded every time I look at statistics and just how many of them I’m going against.

And he know women - most women value family and relationships, i would argue more than men. It is problematic always encouraging career while forgetting biological needs. I would say Jordan is correct on the birth control. It made things more complicated in terms of psychology of women - easy access to "men" - but only on a sexual level without real goal of forming a family. It would be interesting how will GenZ fix their issues. I have heard they are fast becoming the conservative generation.

I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet.... 1 Peter 3:1-7
Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives, when they see your respectful and pure conduct. Do not let your adorning be external-the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear- but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God's sight is very precious. For this is how the holy women who hoped in God used to adorn themselves, by submitting to their own husbands, ...

What is mostly important in your statement is “ He is an inspiration for ALL rational, conscientious humans. “ So I dont know how many of his videos, books, reviews, articles or even interviews that you have watch read and analysed because whatever you know about Dr Peterson and whatever you know he has actually taught, to me it only seems like a needle in a hay stack.

So get I that you might think that its a victim mentality but to me its looking for a reason why she chose to write some letters capital and others small, cause whenever we write, we tend to write what we think and feel or what we’ve gone through generally speaking, whenever we read we absorb the thoughts and feelings and/or experience(s), then we sort of feel and know why the writer has written and how they do feel and think when they wrote. We can only experience all this when because of the format of the text we have read, eg: since you cant shout via text to emphasise your point you have to write your text is capital or bold!

The role of siblings really hit home for me....I was a single child also with no father figure, and rather than becoming self centred and narcissistic, I was instead terribly self-conscious with a real lack of confidence, and found mingling / playing with other kids painful and more of a stress than a pleasure... Easy pickings for bullies. Anyway, I now have 3 kids, because I realise as Peterson emphatically says, siblings keep each other in check, this in turn leads to more natural confidence, responsibility, and social awareness at school, and by consequence into adulthood. It took me into my mid-late 20s to really grow as a person and I really had to strive to break through fear barriers. I am so glad my kids have their siblings to reflect off of and that I managed not to run from my marriage, and to stick it out. To me this has been a lived experience and a tenet that I think should be obvious to humanity...why it isn't is really quite concerning. Peterson is a great man for raising awareness of the cause and effect in what seems like our cultural demise, among his many other valuable teachings.

I think he tried harder to talk from a place of understanding of the position from which radical feminists, like the interviewer, are coming. because he keeps being pushed and argued with the same statements despite him having already explained why he fundamentally disagrees with them, as clearly as possible, lots of times, but since he's relatively intellectually elevated, there's a bit of noise in the process of communication, because he's analyzing from a nuanced perspective that's composed by plenty of time thinking about the subject and several sources of understanding coming from; his professional training, his professional experience both as an educator and as a clinician, his studies on history, biology, archeology, and so on.. while she - and her ideological group - is coming uniquely from her narrowly focused, ideologically distorted, view of reality. so I believe he sometimes struggles to realize that for the average person, and especially for the ideologically possessed, some of the things he deems as obvious are not so obvious, I include myself in this category for some of the things he has expressed. however, I think after carefully laying out his explanations in a very articulate way over and over again, and facing yet again the same antagonistic propositions, he really digged deep into the assumptions and tried to answer as clearly as he's able to, in a way that even the ignorant, and perhaps even the ideologues to some degree, could finally, completely understand why and where he's standing, and how this perpetually opposing view point is flawed. I got to understand his position on woman not being particularly oppressed throughout history in this video better than in any other, I still don't agree with it completely though, but he made a very good case as to why he holds his interpretation, also the interviewer was respectful in letting him talk as much as he wanted to, and pushed him in a few key ways in an attempt to flatten the curvature of the wave like interference underlying their communicative efforts. he's always passionate and dedicated in his interviews, he takes them very seriously because he's aware of the potential reach and impact that they have, but in this one I felt there was a perfect balance between emotionality and patience in both understanding the doubts of the interviewer and articulating his answers, painting a very clear picture in the minds of their listeners

For some reason, it's always the people looking to blame their mediocrity on external factors rather than themselves that get rabid when someone with a little bit of common sense pitches in on the conversation...
And as Peterson says, I'm not denying that external factors play a big role in many cases - but never in history has it played less role on everyone's cases, generally speaking, so to have a rise of victimhood culture in the most educated institutions of the richest countries in the world is as much a self-evident joke as are the people who push the agenda.

@@kleptokratija I suspect the one exception is that transgenders may be "offended" by the idea that you can choose not to address them by their preferred pronouns - in the same sense that Peterson (and myself) would be offended at the thought that someone else can dictate (legally or otherwise) what words I get to choose or not choose to use as a sovereign human being.
Other than that, nothing else comes to mind that could be reasonably construed as "offensive" but in these days of outrage culture, almost everything he says has been, is or will be deemed "politically offensive" for the sake of an agenda.

The woman interviewing him on the British GQ was a champion of that sort of dodging. Especially when he asks her why she's "comfortable having her job if it's a product of a tyrannical patriarchy," and points out that she's a part of the most well-off class of people in history. Her response? "I don't think it will help the neanderthals for me to give up my job!" Right. Because that was the point of the line of discussion.
Dr. Peterson consistently shows great class in not attacking those who dodge the issues like that, and it's really not even necessary for him to do so, as the hypocrisy is self-evident to anyone watching.

This interview keeps coming up on TH-cam auto play. I keep watching it over and over.
I am a Theoretical Physics man. I am also a lover of Mathematics. And a professional systems programmer and analyst.
I have developed, by education and work , a very acute detection system against BS.
Dr. Peterson draws perfectly logical, intellectually honest conclusions based on the data available to him. There is no BS on his mind. He seeks understanding, knowledge and pure honesty.
That is what attracts so many men AND women to him.
It baffles me that his interviewers (usually women) cannot understand him. He is absolutely transparent and direct, and yet these interviewers do not understand him. Why?
    Simple: they choose not to.
And if they choose not to understand him, if they choose to catch him in contradictions and ideological holes, they're fully immersed in an ideology that views Dr. Peterson's ideas as a... threat.
I am somewhat divided between finding the approach followed by this interviewer (and all others, from Newman to the other petulant one) as simply sad or utterly despicable.

I'm a woman who grew up with 3 older brothers (so I was the young "precious" one) and my father died when I was very young. By all accounts I should have a victim mentality. Growing up with boys helped me to avoid seeing myself as the victim, but late adolescence/college taught me to be the victim. It was due to me discovering Jordan Peterson at 20 years old that I realized the popular narrative was false. He helped me re-contextualize my upbringing as massively useful since I was pushed & challenged by my older brothers and I realized how much they helped me develop into a harder-skinned individual despite not having a father. JP's message is very important for women just as it is for men.

Jordan Peterson gave me to tools to save myself.
My life was so bad; addicted to opiate pain pills, I had chased away family and friends and was truly alone. I discovered him on Joe Rogan's show and began watching his lectures, and reading 12 Rules for Life.

      @geoffhart 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

@@MarcosArandia1 I think the reason JBP is so emotional, is because this isn't a purely academic topic for him. This is real life for him. Remember, he is a psychologist who is involved with patients on a personal level. If you're an empathetic person, it's very difficult to not become emotional. Even or me (I am not empathic), just watching these types of interviews, I become emotional - because he shows me what's at stake here. I believe there is really a cultural crisis, and I'm not optimistic. If that doesn't weigh heavy on you, you aren't paying attention.
But you are right, Dr. Sowell takes a different approach. He doesn't often engage with the opposition anymore. But I think if you go back in time you'll find he had a different attitude. Remember, JBP was only launched into the limelight 5 years ago. Sowell was already into politics in the 80's and earlier - and back then he would engage (search for his old congressional appearances and on Firing Line).
Who is right? Sometimes I wish Dr. Sowell was in the public eye as much as JBP - he could help us just as much. But I don't envy either of them, any Cassandra will be hated more than they are loved (at least until they are gone).

@Traubad he's stated before that it does have an effect on him multiple times. I think most popular one is him talking to Joe Rogan. They were talking about Twitter mostly and how they have to stay off it because no matter how "strong" you are... these "little punches" add up. He doesn't like the idea that he's been labeled all these negative things because he truly wants to help people and the people who have been brainwashed don't care to listen to his side and it's sad. Now I will say he's more strong willed than most but it all adds up so it's definitely has had an effect on his well-being.

What a substantive interview. Peterson is insightful and inspiring. He encourages independent thought and reinforces the notion that men and women, or better yet…people, should pursue and cultivate their best selves. While the interviewer seemed to (at times, not entirely) misinterpret or lack complete understanding of some of Peterson’s stances, she ultimately gave him the room to clarify and share his arguments. This is the mark of a true journalist/interviewer. She also has excellent composure. Peterson understandably reacts with high intensity in response to misinterpretations, and she remains non-reactive, even imploring a soothing, open-minded tone. This was an informative and engaging interview.
