The PlayStation 5 has now been officially launched in the majority of the world and, although the reception has been mostly positive, there is one feature about the device that has drawn early criticism, namely the storage. Despite the fact that the PS5 arrives with one of the fastest internal storage systems in the world, commercially at least, the storage available appears somewhat limited with 825GB in the base model and once the system software is installed, around 665GB left to play with. To counter this, Sony provided users with the hardware upgradeability on the PS5 install M2 NVMe SSD upto 22110 in length and this allows users to buy off-the-shelf SSD from brands like Seagate, WD and Samsung to increase the base level storage. So, what is the problem? Well, at launch, Sony has temporarily disabled this upgrade feature to the negative cries of many. The hardware upgrades slot is STILL physically available and you can install NVMe SSD drives inside, but the ability to use this expansion slot is disabled in the software at the moment. however, many users including myself, want to know what happens right now if you install an SSD inside the system? Will it see the SSD and/or can you interact with it in the current version of PlayStation firmware at all? So, I went ahead and installed an SSD inside the system to see what will happen and the results are below.

Omg i just understood how it works. I was so bothered by how I could only have 4 ps5 games max and if I wanted another one I had to delete one. Now, I’m gonna put all of them on usb storage and it’ll take no time to just copy on console when I want to play. Thank you
This was a very informative video that helped me understand how to move big ass games like Cyberpunk onto an external hard drive, without having to worry about deleting games, or making mistakes in the process.
I was so confused when I move my Resident Evil 8 to my external storage after the game was moved I immediately put the disc inside and before I started playing it said “copy” Now I understand how it works thanks to this video

That's exactly what I was just about to ask. I've got my PS5 on the way and with my PS4, I had a 4 TB drive that I can put all of my saved data on to free up the actual internal hard drive. This is still a cheaper option than a new internal SSD. At least for the time being.

It's better to move the games rather than copying because you're creating two copies of the same game (and DLC). One in the internal HDD and the other one in the external HDD which will just eat up your storage even faster. Copying and moving takes about the same amount of time so moving will always be better than copying. I guess the downside is not being able to do anything on the PS5 until the data is done moving. If you copy the game back to the internal PS5 storage, you will have to re-download all DLC again and it's almost as if the game is being downloaded again to your console rather than just copying the data. Sony sure loves making everything complicated with the PS5.

If I click on “copy” on the game when it’s on the external drive it’s downloading instead of copying so I do it also this way now like you show in the video. But why doesn’t it work when I just click on copy on the game itself ?

I think you need to turn off your internet connection while copying/installing, because it happened to me as well
If it’s a PS4 game on your PS five, could you put it on the USB drive and place it in the PS4 and play it from there?

No u have to sit through it but it takes about ten mins on a 50 gig game. U can't play other games or go off the screen while it's copying to or from

So this is more less a way just to hold over games just so you don’t have to delete them.
Pretty much, yeah. A viable alternative for those on metered/slow data connections - but nowhere near as appealing as an internal SSD storage upgrade.

Likely. Because ps4 uses a different partition to prevent from duplication of games or something
This must be not a option in first place. Slower loading times from any usb ps5 games without moving files, just downloading and playing... like on pc!

You can play PS4 games from external
They are for faster loading times, but you can also start them immediately from the external storage.

Not being able to play PS5 games on an external hard drive is laughable and stupid from Sony, you can only store them! I'll pay whatever money it will take to make a PS5-compatible super performance external hard drive, I'm desperate for one. Even if it's 500 dollars, I'll pay for that shit to fix this issue.
