- Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea
Season 2, Episode 15
Killers of the Deep
First air date: January 2, 1966
Guest stars: Michael Ansara, Pat Wayne
Nelson and Crane are separated after they are shot down while pursuing a mysterious submarine stealing nuclear missiles. Nelson, recovered by a Navy destroyer, is bent on destroying the sub, not realizing Crane is being held on board.
Michael Ansara returns to Voyage as Tomas Ruiz, captain of the enemy submarine. He previously boarded the Seaview in the season 1 episode "Hot Line" and the "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea" feature film. Ansara played Kang in the 1968 Star Trek episode "Day of the Dove."
Battle sequences between the destroyer and submarine were first seen in "The Enemy Below (1957)." David (Al) Hedison was cast as Lt. Ware in the movie.
This beautiful HDTV broadcast recording of a restored and remastered film surpasses the commercially-released DVD set and any other syndicated or network broadcasts of Voyage.

This episode has to be one of the very best of episodes they ever did, no doubt. Not at all corny, no weird one-eyed purple people eater type monsters, etc. Just genuinely very good sea warfare entertainment. Really good script this time. Bravo!
The bald headed guy was Barbara Eden's husband. He appeared on I dream of genie at least twice.
Great episode with good action and serious acting. It was very interesting to see the two commanders matching wits. Michael Ansara was an excellent actor.
A really top notch episode. The rest of the Seaview crew must have been on holiday, thanks for posting.
Lots of shots from The Enemy Below but one of the better episodes. No goofy monsters.
I remember when the sub fired the 2 forward torpedoes(the footage reused from The Enemy Below) in that scene, David Hedison as Lt Ware saying the Miami yacht races were nothing like this.
Yeah I agree stock footage . Fox studio.
Oh fantastic - I totally forgot he was in this! Great point@@wezza60
Yes, definitely a reuse of scenes from “the enemy below”
The scenes in the 4ft wide air ducts maze running throughout the WWII class submarine weren't borrowed. Those were all new.
This was some incredible episode. One of the series' best episodes.
AS a kid I loved my model Seaview that I meticulously glued together and painted blue with Testers model paint! Had the flying sub too! Whatta time to be a kid!
Great action packed episode, 👍😊 solid plot, not a shot wasted.
Thank you for the upload ~ a very good episode.
Richard Baseheart was born here in Zanesville Ohio. I was one of the original fans of Voyage to bottom of the Sea in 65-67 as a kid. Amazing
this one was quite the movie, huge episode for a tv show.
Probably the best one yet, if you like old war movies, which I used to watch w/my father (WW II vet) at the kitchen table on our little color TV. Boy, do I miss him and those days.
Irwin Allen re-used footage from the film 'The Enemy Below'; which also starred David Hedison.
They dressed David in the clothes that he wore, in the film, so that he can be spliced into the tv show.
That's right! Read my description in the posting for more information.
My thoughts exactly.
Allen was the ultimate ‘recycler,’ including footage, actors, props and monsters. 😐
Best one yet. Great effects and no silly monsters.
This was a great episode great cast Michael annsara another great actor as the sub skipper this was almost the same as the enemy below movie with Robert mitchum and Kurt jurgens
Another bit of trivia. This episode was almost identical to STOS 1966, Balance of Terror. The quality of these uploads is unbelievable. I’m old enough to have seen all the episodes in B&W, we got our first color tv in 1969.
Also, Michael Ansara was one of two actors to be in both the series and the movie "Voyage of to the Bottom of the Sea".
This was so enjoyable in the 70s and 80s and now
Brilliant as I remember back in the late 60s..
This has to be my favorite episode that had nothing to do with monsters and aliens from the color episodes. 😁👍
Season two still featured Cold War/spy action-adventure format episodes of season one but were starting to mix in more science fiction/fantasy plots along the way. The tipping point was season three.
@@JimCutler me too. 👍😁
The cool thing about this episode is the the enemy wasn’t maliciously evil. He was just a commander carrying out his mission. He wasn’t:” BWAHAHAHA! I am pure evil! And I love it!!”
@@bryansammis998 yes! 👍😁
@@bryansammis998 "A small country with nuclear weapons suddenly becomes a very big country."
Recently read a final shooting script of Killers of the Deep where Crane is blinded by hot fuel when FS1 is shot down. Became awkward as he moved around the boat trying to escape. Obviously they changed their mind. Good decision. 👍
I love all the scenes with the flying sub. ❤
one of the best shows ever this episode was great
Michael Ansara was in he Original Movie with Walter Pidgeon.....
He showed up in all of Allen's shows and was married to Barbra Eden.. Lucky guy!
I LOVE THAT FLYING SUB! AWESOME AND IS THE STAR OF THIS SHOW!😊😊
One of the best episodes! High drama and wonderful performances. And I do remember The Enemy Below, too. Thanks for posting.
Michael Annsara and his wife Barbara Eden were in the original motion picture 1961.
This episode is the best one I have seen. Like a movie. Top notch. Semper Fi!
Can’t wait one of my favourite episodes, Thank you
One of the best episodes I've seen so far; so much better than all the goofy monster episodes.
I love goofy monsters!
This was one of the best episodes of the series. Very well done. But they mixed up the Secretary of defense for the Secretary of State.
Ansara played Alvarez in the movie with hair and a beard! LOL
I was 6 back then, I liked this show, batman my fav, dark shadows.
That poor flying sub takes alot of hits.
Good show. Im hooked!!
Michael Ansara must have been good friends with Irwin Allen, since he appears it every show Allen did.
I never got to watch many of these when I was a kid there was almost always a western on that we had to watch
Watched this and Lost In Space.
It's funny; Michael Ansara was in the Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea movie!
Fraser/Patrick Wayne. The Son Of The Duke !
I want to say, THANK YOU for this moive, I use watch this when I was in my teens. 😮
The actor who played FINNEGAN on Star Trek episode SHORE LEAVE is here too
I've seen this before, but when i watched it the stars were Robert Mitchum and Kurt Jurgens. I seem to remember David Hedison being in the movie aswell. 😂. Mind you, Michael Ansara makes a wonderful enemy commander. He will always be Kang to me. Whenever I see him I can't see anyone else.
Hedison was the exec in The Enemy Below. He rescued the captains.
It would have been hilarious to include a shot of Hedison as Ware in this episode.
The movie was the enemy below, all three of the people you mentioned were in that movie 🎥 🍿 I also see Michael ansara as the Klingon Commander Kang.
That's Patrick Wayne john Wayne's son
Thank ypu for posting this is one of my favourite sci fi series and so clear and sharp .
I loved this program since I was a kid in 1971, the first episode I ever watch was when two scientists in a diving bell get swallowed by a giant sperm whale, I remember it because I was on the sofa suffering from gastroenteritis, and our local gp came and gave me an injection to counteract the infection, I would run home every afternoon to watch this series, it's one of my oldest child hood memories, I was only 7 years old at the time, thank you so much for posting this, I look forward too many more happy memories
The images of this program really pop and great detail almost as if filmed yesterday
Yes the images are very clear and very colorful, as a kid I watch these on an old black and white TV, what a treat it is to see this in remastered color. 👍
They saved a lot of money 🤑 on this episode, a lot of footage was from the movie 🎥 The enemy below.
Once again, they have free-standing shelves on a sub or ship!
There is always a valve next to the burst pipe to turn the water off. How lucky.
Another excellent episode. I wish Allen made more like these during the latter part of the series run. He did the same moves with Lost in Space. The early Black and White shows were pure SF--when he switched to color thats when the show (imo) got too wacked out.
"DANGER DANGER!!!!!" 😂
Great Stuff! They don't make them like this anymore!
You got that right!
And they never will😢 today TV sucks.
A good BATTLE SHIP picture!
Richard Basehart was great in this episode. It's too bad they wasted his talent in those werewolf and ghost episodes. I read that he hated those.
Excellent episode reminds me of the movie "The Enemy Below" and star trek episode "Balance of Power" ..good stuff 👍✨😉
Footage from The Enemy Below is used extensively in this episode!
Amazing the damage these ships can sustain and still be fully functional 😮
should read about the ww2 tanker Ohio.
That's because they were not made in China! 😉😂
Great action...depth charges...break-in out hand cuffs with any type wire...well interesting.
Last thing you ever thought you would need, parachutes in a sub!
Good One!
Great episode this one, got to be in my top ten, thanks TooleMan wonderful picture and sound as usual.🤩
Thanks for another great episode. Even if some of it was bits and pieces of other movies. No monsters or aliens this time. 😊😊😊 4:14
A lot script from the movie The Enemy Below
You are correct.
So many similarities & 'bit' usages of the original footage from 'The Enemy Below' from years earlier starring Robert Mitchum. Well done.
Scenes taken from the movie the “The Enemy Below”! In which co incidentally starred David Hedison.
That screen door on the flying sub may have been a bad judgment call.
Awesome. I built all the models when I was a kid. The flying sun was my favorite. TV sucks compared to that era.
I built the models, too. Great kits.
Gotta love those karate chops to stun adversaries…yes sir ree.
I'll have you know that the Impossible Missions Force used the exact same karate chops, and it usually worked for the IMF, so why not VTTBOTS?
I so enjoyed this episode, it was all ship to ship battle. just like world war 2 ships battles. Far cry from some of those weirder episodes involving rock monsters and far out creatures from the deep.
If the submarine Captain was smarter, he would have locked Captain Crain up instead he had the captain in the control room.
I would love to see the sub with sewer tunnel sized crawl spaces 😂
Thank you for the brilliant content ! ❤
Apart from the Flying Sub opening, this episode mirrored the movie "The Enemy Below." Right down to the destroyer ramming the sub.
Very good show in 750p! Thank you...🇺🇸 👍☕
No sily monsters or aliens great episode
Good thing there were watertight hatches in that sub. Otherwise the water could have flowed between compartments BEFORE it got up to the 3 foot diameter ventilation system tubing.
My guys❤
Patrick Wayne, son of John Wayne, plays a small role here.
They knew they were coming up on the sub and they wait until after they get hit by a torpedo to sound battle stations?
That's what they ALWAYS do!
They should have called this episode "The Enemy Below" . They borrowed a whole lotta clips!
If you haven't seen it, search it up. Great movie!
Especially Robert Mitchums soliloquy. So direct and so very true.
Best explosions EVAH!
15:04 Hedison in the movie: “The Miami yacht races were never like this.”
Indeed an engaging episode. As noted, I will add that the plot roughly follows the 1957 Dick Powell movie, The Enemy Blow. The negotiations between Irwin Allen and 20th Century Fox had to be intense to get the permission to recast it. That said, this production illustrated the tenacity of Irwin Allen. According to artists like Harlan Ellison, et al, Irwin was, well, sneaky, to say the least.
Corr! what a day they had.😳
No stopping Nelson taking over that ship, what to the real captain was anyone’s guess, think this had the hallmarks of a feature film, rather than a tv series, expect it was a ratings winner to keep us all watching this non-stop to many scenes activity.
3:10 You’d think that flying sub would have ejection seats. 🤦♂️
Irwin Allen must have had an off day when he produced this episode. One of his better productions.
Just like the Enemy Below.
2:45 Flying Sub Rock and Roll!
Michael Ansara was married to Barbara Eden, Jeannie.
He guest starred on several episodes. I think he was the Blue Djinn, twice. A Soviet cosmonaut, and King Kamehameha.
@15:03 or so... The Torpedo Scene is from "The Enemy Below" 1957 with Robert Mitchum...
The vessel swinging Port, the Torpedo tracking towards the vessel then missing...
They forgot to "steady the swing"
Wow, I can't believe how good the quality is. Great job! Anyone know where we can see the original movie that started it all?
I'm sure I saw it posted on here somewhere. I watched it earlier this year on TH-cam
No closed caption on the video - What happened? We need a closed caption - PLEASE activate the closed caption. I would appreciate your help. ThankThank you so much for your consideration.
David said about the fact that Irwin kept on about wanting him in Voyage he said he thought it was rather nice of him but then he said later in to the series he figured why he wanted him so much because he could use all of his back catalogue of him to use in the series.🤔
The Enemy Below 2.0
Really a four-star fleet admiral flying a
reconnaissance mission. Could they at least just give him one star to make it a little more believable
No.
For a Type VII (?) boat, it sure had an incredibly spacious ventillation ducting! 😂 Which, of course, no sub has like that--or even much narrower--because it defeats the whole concept of watertight compartmentalization.
FS1 has to be stout enough to withstand the great depths it operates at, as well as to slam into water at speed, and so would be quite dense/heavy. Add to that the very minimal lift such a shape could generate and there's no way it could fly without very high thrust to weight augmented by really high speed. It could not stooge around at the slow speeds as represented.
The notion of slamming into water at flight speed, and with its considerable frontal area to boot, is ludicrous. The transition from air to water involves the sudden increase in medium density by a factor of a thousand. The volume of water to displace cannot get out of the way fast enough; it might as well be firm ground. Even if the vehicle didn't break apart, the hard deceleration would kill the crew given the lousy seat restraint system.
I was thinking the same thing about the air ducts. But in all shows and movies of this type the air ducts were "just the right size to comfortably crawl through"🤨
They borrowed that set from Dr. No.
Plenty of this Episode has Scenes from The Enemy Below 1957 Robert Mitchum.... It's a "Take off"
At least they weren't bold enough to steal Robert Mitchums soliloquy!
@@patrickgriffitt6551 Good point... 😂
No silly monsters, no party! ☹️
They must have a tanning machine onboard.
actually there are two star trek guests on this episode, if i remember right, both the sub captain and the destroyer captain were guests on star trek tos
in fact there are a lot of secondary characters in this episode that i recognize from other shows like the twilight zone, the outer limits, various western shows like Bonanza and others...
John waynes son is on here...
if in doubt always use the airducts which always happen to be man sized
Let's see, People falling over the place while the ship rocks back and fourth....check, Lots of sparks and explosions......check, "on the double and over and out" phrase used......check, Yep it is an official Irwin production.
You forgot the radio operator who's name WAS Sparks.
Patrick Wayne. John Wayne’s son.
Alvarez was on LOST IN SPACE
🤩🤩🤩💖💖
Any chance of posting The Saboeur or I think the other one is I think is called The Shadow Man or The Shadow Creature. Not sure. 😮 Thanks again for the two recent posts.😊😊😊 16:03
That one is already posted by one of the VTTBOTS channels.
I wonder what the "Home Country" is.
Also, has anyone mentioned that the battle scenes are from The Enemy Below?
(yes, everyone) 🤣
Well, it wasn't the Soviet Union or the People's Republic. Might have been the League of Evil Bald-Headed Men. We saw a few of them making trouble in season one.
Got a few South American looking people there as well so maybe the enemy base recruited from south of the border 🤔
Probably the same sub from the original batman movie.
Man, the enemy sub sure was roomie
Capt dead. XO dead. The next sea going officer takes command NOT the Adm. In this movie, it would be patrick wayne
They have flying submarines yet still talk through steel tubes on a battleship 🤣
Young Boys (the target demographic) didn't notice little things like that. Until they grew up. And maybe served in the Navy.
Yes but steel tubes don't short out or become non operational when power is out. Still better than 2 cans and kite string.
Destroyer Escort.😊
@@stevecampbell7620Where they also learned never to say, "Over and Out", on the radio.
As well as use the word, "Repeat", except in it's proper usage (to Fire again).
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
What? No monster ripping out the wiring?
The Seaview requested a no "monster of the week" during this episode, just for a change of pace.
You'll have to wait for season 3 there.
