    A few weeks ago we posted a video of this car and there was a ton of interest in what it took to integrate the 2019 Mustang drivetrain (except for the IRS) into this 1993 Cobra. We take a deep dive into it and try to answer some of the questions asked and also go for an "official" ride in it to show what it can do.
    We consider this to be full on "Purist" as it is within the same brand. An impressive build of taking a 1993 cobra and shoving all the drivetrain AND interior from a 2019 S550 Mustang into it. Yes, this is a 1993 Cobra. A 42D VIN car.
    Specs
    - Full Dash and Console along with ALL electronics swapped in the interior.
    - Recaro Seat swap from an S550
    - Transmission is the 10R80 with the paddle shift fully functional
    - A/C even works!!!!
    - Back up Camera
    - Sat/Nav works
    - Big Baer Brakes front and rear
    - Full SRA in the back with Maximum Motorsports suspension all around. Full Panhard Bar and Torque Arm setup.
    - Electric brakes (to save room under the hood)
    - Evertyhing is FULLY functional on this. The door locks even lock when you hit that magic number in MPH!!
    Hats off to the builder(s) and the owner for making a conversation and vision come to life.

    This hits a special place in my heart. When I was 15 I bought a 1979 mustang as my first car and put a 1990 mustang interior and swapped the 4cyl for a 5.0 crate motor with the 1990 T5 tranny into it. I didn't even have my drivers license for another 4 years. As a 15 year old I spliced the wiring harness together. It was by no means a professional installation but I had most things working. I worked at burger king making something like $2.50 an hour and sunk every cent I made into that car. Then times got hard and I had to sell it before I finished it. I yanked the motor and tranny before selling it which my father put into his 1923 T-bucket. That engine I built 32 years ago is still running today in that T-bucket.

      Even most LS swaps will never go this far. I’ve seen Coyote-based builds, but this is next-level. The dash and controls are so nicely integrated that I hope they go a step further and find a way to do a mock of the S550 door cards.

    I can understand why purists would be upset, but I think it’s an awesome build. It doesn’t look out of place and the car I’m sure performs way better than it did new.

    • @PuristMotorsports
      @PuristMotorsports  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s interesting to me how people classify “purists”. I see it as a within brand swap that’s purist. Quality of craftsmanship is purist. Just because something isn’t “stock” or OEM doesn’t necessarily mean it’s not purist. Let’s be honest, a stock fox mustang is rather nice to look at and cool to see, but it’s performance is abysmal. The whole reason foxes were and are popular is because they were inexpensive and cheap to make go fast.

    Not sure what to make of this, lol. I have a very lightly modded 93 cobra, which is slow, and a 14 Gt500, which is fast, and some stuff in between. I like everything, the thing that stands out to me is the detail and how everything functions. This is beyond impressive......

      I love your collection. Agreed, impressed I am too.
      I’ve driven a 2014 GT500 a few times. Mind blowing car, even 8 years later. My only beef was that the tires just melted in first gear.
      The foxes aren’t fast by modern standards, but they’re so well balanced and have the right amount of power for the aged chassis in which they were designed. I have a mostly stock fox, that by all specs is slower and less capable than my new daily driver. But the fun factor is off the charts!

      I think I’d be all up in arms about it too 10+ years ago. My perspective has changed a bit since then. I think I like it so much because of the execution and attention to detail. They didn’t just put the drivetrain in. They made it all work. Accessories and all. And it doesn’t look hacked to make it work. This one is definitely a love it or hate it build. There’s no in-between on it. Just take a gander at all the comments.

    “Ruined” or “better” is in the eye of the beholder. The purists will hate it, those who appreciate a beautiful fox and a clean swap will lust after it. Personally, I’m poor, so, I lust with the realization that I’ll never be able to ride in that car, let alone own one like it.

    • @PuristMotorsports
      @PuristMotorsports  ปีที่แล้ว

      I find it interesting that the term purist is thrown around as people who like things “factory”. Yet a “purist” thing to do is to swap a “within brand” motor. I see it both ways. Hence the name of the brand.

    This is a very awesome build. And I'm sure the 93 cobra owners are celebrating the fact that their cars have gone up in value by one less car on the road. I say that bc even though this car would sale for good money bc of what it is and how well it's built, but it's worth no more than it would be if it were built out of a 4cyl car bc the fact that it's a 93 cobra was cut out of it. It's only a 93 cobra by registration paperwork only now.

    • @PuristMotorsports
      @PuristMotorsports  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the kind words. Lots of hate on this car because it’s a real cobra. Sad fact is that they produced almost five thousand street cars. Not small production by any means. And value is based on the beauty in the eye of the beholder. And I can say for certainty that the owner of this car has been offered money for this car over double what any 93 cobra R has gone for in public auction. At that point it boils down to style and performance. There’s a reason a reimagined Singer Porsche 911 brings 7 figures. It won’t outperform a modern 911 but Styling and performance match. Fit and finish as well. Plenty of cobbled together builds of all makes out there these days. Just poke around on TH-cam for 10 minutes and you’ll find them. Very few have completed the execution to a level where it all works. Every button and every function. Most shops and people get it “good enough” and move on. I call that the 95% rule. Get it 95 percent complete and move on.
      This build is one that is timeless and traditional. Keeping the look of the original styling with modern technology. Like a Rolex watch. This one won’t ever go out of style. But many wild builds do. They are a content of their era. Like billet aluminum in a hot rod from the 90’s or crazy neon graphics of the 80’s with 2 axis machined billet wheels.
      And saying again, we didn’t build this. It was a purist build in that it was within the brand and complete. We just took video of it with the owner when he took delivery. No denying the ripple this car has caused with 93 Cobra owners. The owner has gotten a real good laugh reading all these comments.

I would love to know how difficult it was to set the firewall up for that dash.. and did y'all have to use the S550 steering column?The car is amazing I'm a big fox body guy and it's always been my favorite mustang and I think you've done more than justice for the car not every 93 Cobra needs to be incompletely original condition. I'm a big fan of older vehicles with a modern touch.

    • @PuristMotorsports
      @PuristMotorsports  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No video of the process. I was only allowed to video the finished product. An S550 floor pan and firewall section were used in place of the fox floorpan and firewall. A portion of the front frame rails from the S550 were also used so that ALL of the S550 dash, electronics, steering column, pedals and other bits could be used. There's really not much left of the fox sheetmetal except for the exterior and everything from the rear seat pan back to the taillight panel. An aftermarket K member was used along with front suspension. You're just like the owner. He wanted the best of old and new in one car.

      It wasn’t one I personally built. But I wanted to highlight this kind of craftsmanship that a buddy of mine had the resources to do. It took a couple of techs to do this over 3-3.5 years. But, it wasn’t the only project they were working on. My buddy and I were talking about it and actual time put into it was about 2-2.5 years.

      Does anyone know if they used a Control Pack or the factory computer?

    • @PuristMotorsports
      @PuristMotorsports  ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ll ask the builder. From what I remember they used all the wiring and computers from a 2019. The car doesn’t have any fox wiring in it except connectors for the fox components like power windows or the trunk release. The S550 harness’ were adapted to the components and it all functions like the S550 with the locks locking at 18mph and the flashing of the marker lights when you lock it. It’s all S550 functionality. Including HVAC and blue tooth.

      Here’s my perspective. 1993 Cobras made up 10% of all 5.0 production in 1993. They aren’t “rare” by the numbers. They are desirable. A Boss 429 is rare. A 1993 Cobra R is rare. A fox Saleen SC is rare. Within 93 Cobra there are some rare optioned ones like Teal/black interior. A black/gray interior car was a higher production number of the total. This purchase for the project happened almost 4 years ago now. Market has changed and people are paying up for 93 Cobra’s. And stay tuned because the original heart and interior from this 93 Cobra saved another one which we will have on the channel this winter.
      This car was a high mileage car in need of restoration. Call it a “driver” with issues.

      @@PuristMotorsports I hear you. Rare by the numbers, they are not, but special nonetheless for some of us. I can respect that they didn’t take a wrapper car as their base, and they did a phenomenal job. However, for the 93 Cobra I am a purist. However, the extent and quality of the work here seem top of the mark. Kudos!

      I’m in that group of people who love the 93 Cobra. Ford nailed the look and the performance for the time. I really love them more than I should. That’s part of the reason I’m m buying back the roller I sold that now has the drivetrain from this car in it. Ironically the car was also a black/opal gray leather car too. But it has a sunroof. Stay tuned. Because of the mods to the one in the video, it’s parts saved one that would have likely been lost to the sands of time. And it’s a clear title car to boot!

      @@PuristMotorsports heck yeah.
      I can appreciate the spirit of customization. The more I look at this build, the more I realize how next-level this really came out to be. Seeing it in a video probably doesn’t do it justice. This is more spectacular than many of the SEMA builds I’ve seen. How well did they document the build? I’d love to see all of the technical challenges they came across and how they solved each one.
      I love that they went with the automatic in this car. Many would choose manual, but this execution is perfect.
      Ford knows there is something special about them since they added a fox style skin for their 2024 digital dash.

    • @PuristMotorsports
      @PuristMotorsports  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not sure on how much the documented. But I can tell you that the owners next one they are doing is his personal vision of putting a GT350 drivetrain and interior in a Fox. Deeper build than this because he wants it all to fit. Rear suspension, magnaride…etc. But it still retain all the fox dimensions externally. We’ll be a part of that build along the way. The guys doing the work are capable of it. One in particular has done SEMA builds before. He’s particular and it shows.

    So much work done by the builder.
    I'm just not that big of a fan of it to be totally honest!
    *A fox body that isn't a fox body anymore...*
    The charm of a fox body Mustang got lost with this!
    Plus, not just any fox body, but a '93 Cobra...
    It's a good Promo car for the builder I guess.

      I didn’t do the work. This is a close friends car and another friend of mine built it for him. The wiring is all S550 and was from a 2019. A few things were adapted to mate to fox solenoids…etc. But yea, it being all 2019 harness’ gives the car its functionality like a modern one.
