    New modern GDI or gasoline direct injection high pressure pumps can be of two types, the three piston pump and the more common single piston pump, with a pressure and volume control solenoid. This single piston GDI High Pressure Fuel Pump is suitable for most homogeneous and stratified combustion gasoline direct injection engine schemes. Its roller follower or tappet cam drive plunger designs reduce friction and contribute to fuel economy and greater power. The pump is an engine driven, on-demand control pump that features a single-piston and integrated design, also supporting a wide range of engine software maps. It delivers operating pressure from 30 bar to 200 bar, or 100 to 2900 PSI. These pumps offer a high flow capability for larger displacement engines. GDi Fuel Pumps includes an integrated flow control valve for accurate fuel control and an integrated overpressure relief valve. A one way valve is also included, which helps maintain the fuel rail internal pressure.
    Seen here we can see the cam lobe actuating on the GDI high pressure pump plunger and piston. Upon simple observation it is a normal piston pump, with nothing extraordinary about it. However, the key component here is the fuel pressure control solenoid to the right of the pump side. The ingenious ingredient here is the high processing power of the ECM used to control the pump solenoid. The idea is for the ECM to .... Get the whole story right here in this video... Enjoy...

    This is some of the best material i've found on the web.Very precise in defining operation and construction of a system.What is very helpful is the animated video of how a device really works.Sometimes seeing how something works is the only way i can grasp it.THANKS so much Mandy your greatly appreciated!!

    Hi, as always thanks for posting. Well, these pumps are made by Bosch and Magneti Marelli (Delphi). Injectors range around $120-GDI Injector and Pumps $400 to $600. These GDI systems are invading the market. It's not like Hybrids, which are here but not quite caught on yet. GDI injection will replace PFI very quick. The engines are the same. Most people think that in GDI the compression triggers combuention, but that's not the case. Comp. happens with either only-air or a lean mix. CONTINUED.

    CONTINUED 2: I can see issues arising from customers that changed their spark plugs to a different (supposedly better) part number only to find out that the vehicle isn't running right. With GDI is best to stay original. Even some of the Hybrids have one different plug per cyclinder. Others, the spark plugs are indexed so you screw them on in a specific way. None of this has to do with GDI, but it is possible. Thanks for posting audiomann...

    That's right, but I do want to stress that these pumps are 2900 PSI (GDI) as opposed to over 25,000 PSI for Diesels. Compression ratio on GDI is normally higher, but not as high as Diesels. The greatest advantage here is "Stratified" mode or very lean intake, lean compression (no pre-detonation) and a rich-Mixture straight to the spark-plugs upon combustion.
    I'll be posting other videos dealing with "GDI-Problems and Issues" in this series and these issues are not what you might think. THanks.

    Generally yes, GDI has higher comp-ratios (11.8:1 or higher) as compared to 10.0:1, but not as high as Diesel (19:1 or higher). Yes, GDI ignition systems deal with higher voltages. The problem is more evident during stratified mode (LEAN burn). You need lots of spark to detonate that lean mixture. Also, as my videos show, the spray guided arrangement on top of the plug makes a difference. The spark-plugs are also different. CONTINUED:

    It reminds of of a diesel injection pump a little bit.
    Very cool design though.
    thank you.

    Thanks to this video, with this video I'm close to solving the mystery with my Toyota D4 engine. Is it possible that the GDI pump gets damaged and start leaking some fuel into the oil sump?? My Toyota D4 engine has developed a problem of high fuel consumption, I suspect the fuel finds it's way into the oil sump because the oil level keep on increasing. The engine has a wide range of problems, main one is stalling!!

    CONTINUED: So it's very convenient for manufacturers to switch to GDI. They now qualify for full emissions laws at basically no extra cost to them. The high pressure is localized to the fuel rail, like Diesel. You are right though, no one knows yet how reliable these HP pumps are. On Mitsubishi it's been a rather nightmare, for some unknown reason up to now. But, with economies of scale things will even out.

    I hope these pumps are robust and reliable, because I am fairly sure they will be expensive to replace if they fail, and pumping petrol at 2900 psi is hard work!

    Right now Mercedes, BMW, Kia, Hyundai, Mitsu, Ford and I'm sure I'm forgetting some other maker have introduced GDI. The only change is in the cylinder head. Issues will probably be weeded out in the first few years of introduction. This technology is actually proven. It'll be use on Formula-1 next year, so it's got to be proven. I had a chance to study GDI back in the late 90's from Bosch and they've done a lot of work on it. But, as you said issues will arise and tech will have to deal with it

    How ECU engine control pressure without pressure sensor (first generation high pressure pump on 4G93GDI) ? Where cam from signal for ECU to decide open or close valve ?

    So am I right in thinking that notes the imbibed can have a much higher compression ratio? Also is the ignition made stoner as well? (higher voltage)

    I have GDI MMC Galant and terrible ignition at frozen weather, but I'm close EGR valve cause of the soot in the intake manifold and throttle

      and don't understand how should work high pressure valve at the ignition moment ? But observed that if the frost off valve engine have more best start

      Alexander Nikolaevich
      GDI engines don't necessarily have issues with cold weather unless your valves are CORBONIZED. It's a good idea to stick a borescope through the spark hole and take a look at the valves. Some of these borescopes (look though tube) are not expensive but at least you know if that's the case.

      ADPTraining I'm sure what my valve engine and intake clean from carbon deposition, because recently disassemble engine head and clean...

    • @ADPTraining
      @ADPTraining  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok, so the issue has nothing to do with you having a GDI engine. CHeck then the basics like FUel pressure and VOLUME (volume is important) at the Low Pressure Side. Thant plus proper ignition, etc. Post back with more info if possible.

      recently was instal new High Pressure Fuel Pump, later new basic fuel pump on tank, change fuel filter near fuel tank, Ration compression on cylinder at about 12, new spark iridium. Engine works very well, just have poor ignition

    If pressure stays on the injector rail after engine is shuts down.is it possible a bad injector could sweep gasoline into cylinder and past piston ring and ruin engine oil .by thinning it down the oil?

    Hi, good videos. which manufacturers use the three piston pump? in your book do you illustrate the three piston pump also? Thanks.

    • @ADPTraining
      @ADPTraining  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it's all in the books and DVDs. Manufacturers can and may choose to use any one of the pump options. Sometimes it varies between models.

    The fuel supplied to the high pressure fuel pump has to be under some pressure or the pump will suck the fuel even from the can?

    Yeah, I'm sure I remember Mitsubishi using this tech in the 90's ,but it seemed to be fraught with problems, and never took off ,wasn't Toyota using some kind of similar set up for lean burn engines? I think these modern systems are not tested enough, or the mechanics and electronics are not quite in harmony,i think pmfi still has a future because it is proven reliable, most modern cars especially hp diesels dont see the end of their warranty without some major fuck up.

    hello, i got one question ask you, where can i get information on the parameter on GDI engine, i search a lot of paper but still don't get it right.. it's for my thesis paper.. the parameter could be 1) fuel flow rate, the spray angle, injector angle... please anyone help me....
