Just got off the phone with the Toyota corporate offices and they said, YES, users will be required to subscribe to the Toyota Connect service in order to use the remote start option on their vehicle.
You have to be on a free trial, or subscribe to any of the connected services options like service or safety connect to have the key fob function work. The remote connect service is what's needed for to start the car over the air on the app.
I'm extremely disappointed that I cannot use this feature in my 2019 limited avalon which I bought used in 2022. Toyota Mississauga told me I need to subscribe to their connect service. It is totally a scam. I will definitely reconsider buying a Toyota again as they are no more that durable anymore anyway and then they try this money on their customers who want to own their vehicles for longer period?.....seriously ?
"Nobody has fact checked anything" dude. you work for toyota and you yourself didnt fact check apparently. Toyota *did* (and is even available in their own documentation) say they are charging monthly for your *keyfob remote start* to function. Hilariously you even show it in your own video at 4:23. It specifically mentions the key fob remote start.
I will have a new video up tomorrow clarifying some of my misunderstandings. But you CAN still get 10 years of free remote start with the key only through the free trial of service connect on applicabls 2022 models.
As long as you are in a free trial of any connected service, like service connect, you will not need to pay for the remote start with your key fob, only with your phone. Here is my new video with updated info - th-cam.com/video/9qx_hUp-9uk/w-d-xo.html
You are wrong. Toyota has officially confirmed it. Most dealers have informed their customers about it (years ago!). People like you are the real problem here. You have no idea how the remote start on the fob works. Please ask a certified technician and update your video.
@@xMods-ld8nx lied? No. Misunderstood some parts? Yes. I wasn't completely wrong though. I'll have an updated video up tomorrow to clarify where I messed up.

I spent one hour on the phone with Toyota, and they advised me that it comes standard (Free) for ten years on the 2021 Venza Limited, after that it will be a monthly subscription to remote start the Venza with the key fob !!! SUCKS

What absolute bullsh*t. I will not be buying another Toyota or any vehicle from a greedy dealer that has to take more money monthly. Absolutely ridiculous.
You don't have to give any money if you don't want to. This is just for the remote start and additional features that can be used with remote connect on the app. You can still use the remote to start the car for free up to 10 years.

Bryan, I just got off the phone with Toyota Canada and they’ve confirmed that the following is true: Toyota vehicles made prior to 11/12/2018 will have remote start functionality with the key fob for free. Toyota vehicles built since then will have the following applied: 1. The smartphone app will work for free for 1 year. After that time you need to pay for it. 2. The key fob will still start the vehicle for free without the app for 3 years for the Audio Plus system and 10 years for the Premium Audio system, and these terms are from the day of delivery to the customer. After those terms, the fob will not start the vehicle remotely unless you pay the subscription. 3. The starting function of the key fob obviously has to be in close proximity to the vehicle, but the technology that actually starts the vehicle is based on the same technology used by the app, which is the cloud based, or cellular based technology, and this is the infrastructure that costs Toyota to maintain, hence the subscription fees. Starting with the fob sends the signal from the fob to the vehicle, then the vehicle sends a signal to the Remote Connect service which then sends a signal back to the vehicle to start the engine. 4. Remote starting from the fob is not connecting to a remote starter as we know it. A remote start system can be installed by Toyota or a 3rd party company, but any system other than Toyota’s May void the warranty.
In regards to points 3 and 4, I would just like to point out that I see a disturbing trend to require an offsite server (the cloud) to do a simple task. I greatly believe (though I don't have evidence) that Toyota could have easily implemented direct communication from the remote to the car. So those points may be true, but they still disturb me greatly.
You are mostly right, and somewhat wrong. I don't blame you though because Toyota has made sure to make this as confusing as possible for everyone. I will be making another video to clarify some misteps in my video .

i have a 2019 camry SE with a factory remote starter that just stopped working - i have called the service dept. and was told no difference between using the fob or the remote connect - there is a fee for using the fob - if this information is incorrect can you tell us who to contact ? thank you.
One thing I don’t like what Toyota does with their remote start is whenever a person remote starts, the vehicle turns off when unlocking and getting in. My previous Ford F-150 and Jeep Grand Cherokee.
It's a choice in engineering from Toyota. Other manufacturers just have you hit the power button one time to fully turn the car on a d make it ready to drive. Toyota turning the car off and back on is a strange design choice to me, but it does the same job I guess.
What's pissing people off here is that Toyota's remote start is dependent upon the Toyota Connect Services. It doesn't function independently of that service which ***everyone else's*** remote start system does. Also, since the Toyota remote start is dependent upon Connect Services, your remote start via Connect Services most likely will not work if you're in a mobile service dead zone. This can easily be tested by driving out into BFE with no mobile service and testing remote start. Customers want a remote start feature on their keyfob that doesn't require a subscription service which is what everyone other automaker has. Until Toyota has a factory remote start system that functions off the keyfob and only the keyfob, I will not be buying a Toyota product. I'll buy a Jeep or Kia PHEV long before I'll buy a Toyota as their factory remote start system functions independently of a connect service.
Ford and Chevy do it as well, my buddy was asked to pay for a subscription on his F-150 and he said no. My other friend pays for the subscription through her onstar service on her Tahoe. Point is other manufacturers do have this as well.
@@82dupont I wouldn't be caught dead owning any GM product much less rent one. It doesn't surprise me that GM is doing this as they've been making crap for years. Does the Ford key fob remote depend upon the Ford subscription or does it function independently of it? I'm well aware of Ford's Sync. I don't have a problem with charging a subscription fee to use the app on your phone. If that's all Ford is doing that's fine. If they're pulling what Toyota is doing and one or more functions of the key fob are disabled then Ford can go die in a fire right along side Toyota. Toyota is seriously looking at redesigning their vehicle computers so the key fob functionality is not dependent upon on Toyota connect subscription. FYI, Microsoft is doing this too. Take a look at the requirements of Windows 11 sometime. As if getting Windows Service Packs weren't bad enough. If anything will drive further and forward the open source movement, this will.
That document from Toyota you displayed does not clearly state what you pretend it states. The Remote Start feature uses the Remote Connect infrastructure. Toyota may have backed away from the plan to charge people for remote start after all of the negative backlash in December - but it absolutely was their plan to do so (as several news sources reported after requesting and receiving clarification from Toyota).
DUDE, it says right in the toyota page you posted (at th-cam.com/video/4Kwz3gSfsR0/w-d-xo.html) that if you have audio plus vehicle key fob it only works for 3 years. After that you need a subscription. Which is 100% accurate. My wifes 2018 camry no longer remote starts because we wont pay the BS extortion. Nor will we ever buy another toyota. One of the things that was a requirement when we were looking for her car was a remote start since we live in Nebraska. NOT ONE WORD WAS SAID when we bought that car new that after 3 years we were going to have to pay a fee to use the fob remote start. It might be buried in the fine print but nobody said "yes it has remote start now but toyota will turn it off in 3 years unless you pay us every month". Toyota lost this customer and will lose many more over this really stupid idea. Which is probably the only thing dumber then the car shutting off when you unlock it after remote starting it. What's next toyota, a charge to use the heated seats in the winter? But go ahead and claim you installed them for free and wont charge me all summer for them.
So what you are basically saying is that your physical key fob (the 2 presses and the 3rd on on hold) will not start the car. Not talking about the app.
@@SkippyPB. That is correct. Both the fob and the app use the same system to start the car and BOTH require a subscription to work. No 8 bucks a month no remote start with the fob. On a good note Toyota has found what the value of a loyal 20 year customer is, it's 8 bucks a month. I'll never buy another yota.
I just think your hole take on this is stupid. The number one reason people buy Toyota is their reputation for reliability and quality. To black ball them for a lesser vehicle like Chevy or Ford is just crazy.
@@tiggerwoods100 I think it's a mindset that is worrying. I have owned several Camry's and was planning no buying another Toyota in a year or so but this gives me great pause. It's not the function itself. I don't have remote start now so I wouldn't miss it but the business practice of extorting me for features I already paid for is very worrying for the future of the company. Plus if we don't take a stand then they will do it with something else and all the other companies will follow suit.

What the reference in that article is about remote connect, which is the app based service. But everyone keeps confusing this with remote start with the key fob.
I have a 2020 tundra platinum (high line stereo). Remote connect has never been subscribed. (SOS lights are off). Remote start (key fob only) quit working recently. Is there a timeline for 3 years on remote start? I may have to initialize remote connect to wake up the key fob remote (short range) What's your input?
thanks, but my new corolla cross LE does not start after 3 pushes of the remote. Toyota dealership says I must pay to have remote start put in. Can't win .
Thanks for the clarification. But Toyota shouldn’t be charging to use APP. However it’s good to know I can start it from home, if I ever get it. Been on order since Aug. I won’t be giving them a penny to use the app. Ridiculous.

It only worked the first time I tried it. Hasn't worked again since so I'm very confident you have to pay for it after doing some research.
@@alvinsimba734 well if that's the case, we could buy LE upgrade with the push start (which includes remote start). Get an aftermarket remote start installed. And once the free trial ends, you could still start it with the aftermarket starter

Make sure you have two lock presses before pressing and holding on the third. Timing is key as well as distance from the car. If anything isnt right, it won't start.
@@AskforBryan The car is close in the garage. Usually hold the third press for about 3 seconds. I will have to try holding a little longer. I'm used to the compustar remote on my Ram which works flawlessly 🙂

Since the battery replacement my fob remote start no longer works. I made an appointment with service dept- I was told I no longer have fob remote access and need to purchase through the app!
I have a 2018 Toyota Sienna Limited with Entune 3.0. I never downloaded an app or tried the remote start feature before today. I tried exactly how they described to do it but no go. Every time I hit the lock button the lights blink. I saw in the information you provided it says something about vehicles being manufactured before 11/2018 need a subscription. Can you tell me if this is true? And/or is it cheaper just to get a 3rd party starter installed. Thanks.
It is probably no longer working because the 3 year free trial of Service Connect has timed out. You would need to unfortunately pay for any one of the other connected services, like Remote Connect to regain this function.
Had my Tacoma since new for 2 years now and never knew my key fob (with 3 total buttons) had the ability to start my truck. I had the app and it almost never worked so I never went for the service. Subscription ended a year and a half ago but the fob start still works for me.
Thanks for this video. But FYI…many owners on the 4Runner groups/pages are reporting that REMOTES START will NOT function without the REMOTE CONNECT subscription. So perhaps there are regional differences at play here? One thing is for sure: all Toyota Connected Services should be FREE!

I've got 3 toyotas made in the last 2 years and I can't remote start a single damn one of them with the key.
Just this week my FOB will no longer remote start my 2023 Tundra Limited. Went to go look at remote connect APP, to see what the cost would be now it’s $15 per month!
Please clearify this out for me, is the "vehicle key fob functionality" on the document not the physical key fob? If I buy a used 2019 corolla in 5 to 6 years, 2027, will it still have remote start working for free?
All depends on the radio installed. If it had the base package no the fob will not start the car. If it had the Audio plus package radio, No because that subscription for using the fob starts in 2022. If the car had the premium radio package then YES the remote start on the fob will work until 2029, at which point it to will become subscription.

You may need to update the software in your main screen to make sure this feature is enabled. You may also need to call Toyota Connected Services team through the SOS button on the roof to make sure they know you have the car now if it was purchased used.
My key fob stopped working and my remote connect isn’t connecting either. I’m screwed with both. I’m tempted to get an aftermarket or take this car back because this is bs
From what I understand, remote start/stop is not available from Toyota on any manual vehicle. You can add your own with an aftermarket unit with no issues though.
I’m gonna trust Jeff on this one. The article you posted shows that Connected Services is required within specific time frames. The article you shared does not list 2021 models specifically.

I lease a 2019 Toyota RAV4, and they made me Pay $400 to install an external remote starter for my car. They never told me that my key remote starts my car I found that out accidentally on my own later on when I would go back to my car and my car just happened to be on. I have an external fob on my keychain to start my car and I’ve been paying for it. This is crazy that I was never told that, I am really mad. What do you think I can do about this?
I’m pretty sure I was told from Toyota that after a year the remote start function wouldn’t work which is why they made me install the external remote start in the car. At least it back in November 2019.
I have a 2021 Highlander and the service expired Aug of 2022. We continue to have remote start with the keyfob for about 5 months and then it stopped working. We call Toyota Services and they told us that they did not have a way to remotely change the settings on my car to cause the keyfob from working and to take the vehicle in. We took the car in, and 1st thing they did not even look at the remote start issue but told us they could not do anything unless we got the "Toyota Subscription". well I have a Launch vehicle diagnostic unit and found a 2 or 3 layer deep setting called "Communication Remote Engine Start" and that was set to "Available". I changed that to "Not Available" and guess what the Keyfob remote started the vehicle. I loaded a video.
3:45 Owners of the 2024 4Runner TRD Premium Edition does not have the option! Unless they have the Limited or TRD Pro. Took delivery 2 nights ago, dealer confirmed it. Fact check that!
I may consider paying their fee to remote start my car if they actually make the app more functional such as- window control and heated seat on/off.. a couple ideas off the top of my head.
Basically you pay for the membership of the app only. Not the manually remote start with your key fob by pressing the lock button three times hold on the third time and boom. I do this on my ES 350.

This is only thing keeping me from buying a Toyota. Some videos Toyota has eased up and it's up to ten years now. I'm looking to but my final ride in the next 3 to 5 years. I'm 51 and when I retire, I counting pennies. So, nope.
This video is just a 8 minute lie. Toyota is charging for what should be a free service or something not even considered a service. I just went ahead and paid for the subscription service it’s $25 a month. I think they also want to use att for internet, which is an additional charge. Im probably just going to install a remote start, it will be cheaper in the long run. Also you can just hook up your phone to the car that does everything and more for free lol. For 💩 and giggles I will try it for a month then cancel to see what it’s all about.
I do not want my phone to contain anything that can be used when it gets hacked. I don't want to up put an app on my phone to drive my car. Right now I cannot remote start my 2022 Camry even though I could at the dealership before I purchased.
Thank you for this post..The remote connect from toyota seems to have only an 80 ft. range. I'm looking for something that works at a longer range. Which system is best in your opinion..Viper or Compustar. I would like to have the best. Price is no option. Perhaps an iPhone app also. Winter is almost here in Quebec Canada. It's for my 2017 Rav4 Limited
Question: I'm looking at buying a new Rav 4 Le trim, does it come with remote start "out of the box"? Or does it need an aftermarket solution since it's not compatible with remote connect?
It's not free for me, I gotta pay $8 a month. But I only pay for the winter months. And for what i paid for this vehicle i shouldn't have to pay a dime.
@AskforBryan I wish somebody would figure out a bypass for the key remote start. I paid $50k for the stupid car, I shouldn't have to pay for this one feature. I may just take it off and add one myself

So I disagree, I absolutely have to pay to remote start my car. It’s such a petty thing Toyota has done I will seriously consider going to Honda for that alone. Such a cheap money grab.
This is total clickbait. The people are coming here to do know if they can do remort start without the app completely not on trial. My trial app was only for 3 years. So, looking for another option! The app is sooo buggy as well!! I refuse to pay subscription for it!

You people all act like spoiled little kids. My God you might have to walk outside and actually start your vehicle all by yourself. How dare Toyota do this to you. What I wonder about is the security around the system itself. If my Phone is connected to the internet by way of the app. What security do I get from Toyota to protect my personnel information? You say other manufactures have this app system for free. What security do they offer with this app to protect you? Seems like nobody is asking or thinking about these questions. The $8 to me would be worth it if I am getting security that other manufactures are not offering. I mean sooner or later when this becomes the norm. Hackers will find a way to hack your system and steal your car or truck. The real only problem I have with the app start is its useability. Will it work in an underground parking structure? The app service is through AT&T. I know in my state I don't get internet service up north at my cabin. Is this why Toyota pushed this off three years. Hoping the new 5-G network would solve these problems.

Hilariously you even show it in your own video at 4:23. It specifically mentions the key fob remote start.
I will have a new video up tomorrow clarifying some of my misunderstandings. But you CAN still get 10 years of free remote start with the key only through the free trial of service connect on applicabls 2022 models.

You are wrong. Toyota has officially confirmed it. Most dealers have informed their customers about it (years ago!). People like you are the real problem here. You have no idea how the remote start on the fob works. Please ask a certified technician and update your video.

You don't have to give any money if you don't want to. This is just for the remote start and additional features that can be used with remote connect on the app. You can still use the remote to start the car for free up to 10 years.

Check and make sure your subscriptions are active on your Toyota app. Look for remote connect, as well as service and safety connect.
Bryan, I just got off the phone with Toyota Canada and they’ve confirmed that the following is true:
Toyota vehicles made prior to 11/12/2018 will have remote start functionality with the key fob for free.
Toyota vehicles built since then will have the following applied:
@@AskforBryan I could be wrong about this too but I think Toyota has made some changes since I spoke to them.

One thing I don’t like what Toyota does with their remote start is whenever a person remote starts, the vehicle turns off when unlocking and getting in. My previous Ford F-150 and Jeep Grand Cherokee.
For security reasons in case someone breaks in
It's a choice in engineering from Toyota.
We need to make this viral …. Don’t buy Toyota because you have to pay subscription for remote start… which is ridiculous
This is a horrible policy. I was excited to buy a Toyota or a Lexus here within a year, but this has basically shifted me towards an Acura.

It depends on which audio system it has really.
@Bryan can you link that website from Toyota Fob
Trying to start our rav 4 from the fob only works half the time. Why is that ?
Make sure you have two lock presses before pressing and holding on the third. Timing is key as well as distance from the car. If anything isnt right, it won't start.
@@AskforBryan The car is close in the garage. Usually hold the third press for about 3 seconds. I will have to try holding a little longer. I'm used to the compustar remote on my Ram which works flawlessly 🙂

If remote start is such a big deal to you, you can still do it from they key fob. They come from the factory that way without any connected services activated.
@@AskforBryan I bought my Toyota with remote start, but it did not come from factory.

I'm trying to buy a RAV4 hybrid XLE without the audio Plus package and I was told the key fob will no longer have the remote start and that I would need the Audio Plus to get remote start from key fob and app
The standard audio package never had remote start on the key or app. You have always needed the audio plus or premium audio for this feature. Or, just add aftermarket remote start and get the standard audio package.
I have a 2022 Rav4, I can't start remote start my vehicle. Its a company car and I'll NEVER buy toyota again because of this crap. You need the audio plus package or something stuipd like that. Toyota sucks.

Yes . Toyota sucks what kind of ridiculous stuff they’re pulling
I called Toyota and they told me I had to subscribe to their app and I would be charged!
BS! You need to fact check yourself! Because I've spoken with my local dealer and you have to pay to use the remote start off your key fob after a year! My 2021 Platinum Tundra is already having issues with remote start 8 months in. And guess what my dealer told me!
As long as you are in a free trial of any connected service, like Service Connect which can last 3-10 years, you will not need to pay for the remote start with your key fob. Free remote start with they app is only 6 or 12 months, depending on the model. Then, you will need to pay the $8/mo or $80/yr for Remote Connect on the app. Here is my new video with updated info - th-cam.com/video/9qx_hUp-9uk/w-d-xo.html
just bought a 2022 cross... no remote start. that suck toyota.... they want over $500. to install
Check out 12v Solutions for a good plug and play upgrade
Thanks for the information !!
This is my first Toyota and last. Back to Honda.
Thank you for the clarification!
They are charging though. Never again im getting rid of my truck now. 2021 Tacoma. Who wants it?
Thanks for clarification
Why are you Lying to your customers? I called Toyota NA and you are LYING? They are handicapping the ability via a software update. Your fob doesn't need cellular data to work. That's why I can remote start my car in the underground parking garage with no cellular signal.

You are correct that they key fob does not need to have cellular service, but in the 2018 and newer models, the car does have to have a cell connection so that the computer in the car can verify there is an active Connected Services subscription. Its lame, but that is how Toyota engineered it.
Thank you very for information about remote for Toyota 😊
Note: KEY FOB REMOTE START WILL NOT FUNCTION IF CONNECTED SERVICES ARE WAIVED. You my sir need to do a deeper research before uploading videos

Tell my car that.
Much appreciated!
Hoping the new 5-G network would solve these problems.
fake news get lost dude
