Toyota is NOT Charging You for Remote Start: UPDATE!!!

- Hopefully this fixes any errors in my last video on this topic, but some 2020 and newer Toyotas will have remote start free with the key fob for up to 10 years through the use of a free trial to Service Connect.
I am so dissapointed in Toyota for implementing this hostage situation for their owners. If I had realized this I would NOT have bought a Toyota and I will NOT purchase another one, nor will I suggest a friend buy one.
All new vehicles have subscriptions for remote start. It's bs, but why not nickle and dime us?
Ford is not charging for this service. So definitely not all.
Bro it’s just remote start. Not everyone cares for it like myself, it’s just a marketed thing, it does suck but it doesn’t effect my life or the quality of there vehicles.
@@CRAZYMAN-yv5qc I think people are upset cause the car comes with it, we paid for the entire car, owning it via Title but now we have pay walls.
Imagine paying to use your heated seats lol. I'm sure BMW had fun with that.
Here’s the deal. The subscription is bs and you DONT NEED IT TO START THE CAR REMOTELY. It’s built into all push button start Toyota’s. Using the remote push lock, push lock again then push lock a third time and hold it until the lights flash and your car will start without any subscription.
I just purchased a new Toyota, and it came with a free trial of remote connect. During setup, I was informed (and confirmed with Toyota support) that I would need consent to have my driving "habits" uploaded to the cloud. This telemetry was for the purposes of allowing insurance companies to give "good driving discounts". The latest toyota app has this changes implemented- even if you are willing to purchase remote connect and pay a subscription, you will be required to upload your driving data.
I'm I the only one that thinks this is going to be used as a tool, purchased by all the big insurance companies to "rate: their drivers and thereby find a way to increase their premiums? Thos of you that are using the toyota connect app might want to look into this. I just don't think it is a bridge to far to see where this info could go. Yes, we already give GPS and data as such via mapping programs and other apps, but you are diirectly consenting to have this info sent to insurance companies for their use. Not cool Toyota.
This is the you will own nothing and be happy.
This is you will sign over your privacy and be happy.
This is companies collecting and selling your data for profit to stores, government, insurance companies etc.
This is not something that should be supported with a purchase if you know what's good for you.
Same for me. I don't know why these companies are so interested in collecting customers' private info until I receive a lot of phone calls and emails from different sources soon after I receive my new Toyota RAV 4 asking surveys and offering services. Toyota are now playing dirty game for making fast money while quality of their products are getting worse. It won't last long.
Buy used cars 2010 and older
Right, I would never sign that. I am still looking at Toyota, but I just discount all of these trial features. I am not going to sign their agreement. I expect this will end in an invasion of privacy class action case.
Yep progressive has snapshot its totally the same thing.
i almost agreed to pay 80 dollars per year and then realized these crooks want all my data too without which I cannot subscribe.. what kind of evil is this?

@@user-jt5vm3mi1w nice retort, got anything useful to say?
2023 Off Road Tacoma with Advanced Tech Package and Premium Audio here. I got my truck 2 days ago, remote start worked great. My background is I.T security, so naturally I refuse to allow corporations to willy nilly track my services, hardware, etc. I called to disable and revoke consent on data tracking, etc. etc. They said they can't disable specific features, they have to disable the whole trial package - fine by me, I have no use for these trials. Well, it disabled my remote start through the key-fob. This is a huge issue because the receiver is physically installed onto your $46,000 truck and has absolutely nothing to do with the APP or other services, so they're disabling it via signal purely as a "F-YOU" for not consenting to their data collection and their data collecting trial services.
This has to change but it will only happen if you spend 2 hours on the phone like I did to remove data collection and telling them this is wrong. It is purposely extremely inconvenient because they know most people won't go through the trouble. They're selling you by CAUSING THE PROBLEM and creating a paid for solution. People better stop being complacent or we will all own nothing while the 1% owns everything. Cheers

These car companies are like the mafia now - 'It would be a shame if something bad happened to your car & it no longer functioned correctly. But we really like you & we want to look out for you so if you pay us a fee every month we'll make sure nothing bad happens to your car. Consider it kind of like insurance.' Then they break out in maniacal laughter.
Do you know a work around??
100% spot on. We need to stand up against them. Louis Rossmann is the man to get involved. He was the one, along with another gentleman, that went against John Deere and helped to get the Right to Repair law passed.
The problem is, most of the new buyers aren't still going to have their vehicles after 10 years so it's largely going to affect the used car market; the ones who can't afford to buy new and will be the ones to get milked out of the subscription fee.
@@user-jt5vm3mi1wwhat do you mean pls explain
Toyota has really decided now is a good time to gouge their client base. It's too bad , it's things like this that dramatically change peoples perception of a company and not for the better. Unfortunately for Toyota their are a few other companies selling quality vehicles that don't at least as of yet, want to take their clients for granted.
Because of this I will refuse to get another toyota ever again I'm not going to pay a subscription for something that is pretty much standard on every other car.
None of this is standard

My key fob just stopped working for remote start all of the sudden. I pretty much have no info on what's going on. I checked my doors, trunk and hood and even changed my key fob battery. It's really pissing me off at this point. There's no answer on any forums at all. I have no check engine light on. Something so small is driving me crazy.
Mine too. 2021 avalon. I had to download the app and sign up for the free subscription for it to work again.
@gregjr63 Yup! I had to do the same thing.
This app stuff really sucks. Toyota basically said you can rent the remote start but you will never own it.
Guess I need to look at another brand. Very disappointed. Oh yeah, I also own a 2007 Tundra and a 2016 Highlander so I tend to keep my vehicles and hand them down to the kids.
Why do you care? Remote start is a pointless gimmick. It's dangerous to use (there's no driver in the car) and it's bad for the engine to let it idle.
@@jublywublyI care because I don’t want the wife to jump into a cold car without warming it up. Two minutes. You’re not making sense when you say people leave them running.
Go aftermarket.
Greed, not customer service, has become the driving force among too many companies these days. And one day they'll be left scratching their heads when they've gone the way of the dinosaur.
I opted out and disabled all Toyota remote features due to their horrific privacy practices. It's one of the worst I have ever seen. Somehow my remote start still works. Here is a snippet of what they collect but not all "they can collect a whole heap of personal information on you through your car, the Toyota app, and their connected services. This includes everything from personally identifying information such as name, address, phone number, email, online identifier, social media ID, and demographic information such as your age, to driving behavior such as acceleration and speed, steering, and breaking functionality, and travel direction, to lots of information about your car including VIN (Vehicle Identification Number), interior and exterior image data from cameras and sensors in your car, facial geometric features. They even can collect sensitive personal information such as precise geolocation data, biometric information."
And yes the absolutely sell this data, including insurance agencies.
Really appaling.
i even changed my 2021 XLE rav4 to 2022 XSE rav4 just for this feature that toyota showroom salesmen sold as a feature.. really we need to take a class action suit
Wow so it looks like deciding between the Rav4 and the CRV just got alot easier, im going to with the CRV,
Subscriptions to use remote start on the Keyfob is unacceptable,
Its sad I liked the way the Rav4 looked but I will not tolerate that kind of cash grab.
The subscription is really only for the remote start on the app. There is 10 years of remote start on the fob for most Toyotas now.
@@AskforBryanwhich Toyota? Is a 2022 Highlander XLE with the premium one of them? I live in the Midwest and I know I will be pissed next winter if the key fob doesn’t work!
Looks like it should have it. Check the chart Toyota has published here:
www.toyota.com/connected-services/
I have a 2019 Camry XSE. I purchased May of 2021. I have always started my car using my keyfob by pressing button 3 times and holding. This week it stopped working. I found out about this 3 year thing & was disappointed but I downloaded the app & setup an account, put in my VIN & all that good stuff, got to payment screen & received error over a dozen times (next screen would be entering credit card, never made it to that). I called Toyota and paid for the year subscription, now just need to activate. I followed the instructions that were received and keep getting an error on the authorization screen in my car. Do I need to drive car 1st or is there something that has to be done before I can get this activated?
So I just renewed my Toyota connect .. which sucks as is but. Ok. I paid the 80.00 subscription..and it’s not working. When I go to the app it says I need to renew however when I go to manage subscription it shows it’s paid already even contacted Toyota connect and they can see the service is paid and shows active however I’m. Not able to start, lock, or unlock vehicle however the odometer info is provided and health and service info is provided. I was told I need to notify my dealership to have them to do a DCM firmware update and guess what it’s not converted by Toyota so I’m responsible for 75.00 in labor to update firmware. This is absurd. Toyota you need to do better I go to the dealership for all issues regarding my vehicle I’m very disappointed this caused me to cancel my subscription because it’s not worth it at this point. Not to mention the headache of having to speak to several different people and contacting three different departments . Toyota connect first then brand engagement center, then the dealership.
I bought my certified 2018 less than a year ago. The remote start worked then but now it will not I can’t believe I have pay Toyota extra after the car was sold to me as one of the included features
I also see on some websites an 80.00 year option for the connect service, which alows for starting via the app.. is that available, I dont see it on Toyota's site..
It's unfortunate that Toyota has lost my business. I have purchased new Toyota's for the last 12 years (and the wife did as well) but this, "you must have an app on your phone to work" just lost me as a customer (fortunately for Toyota, I had just bought a 2022 Camry so they don't have to worry for about 4-5 years). This is just a cash grab. Thank you for the video.

In most cases, as long as you have any active connected service subscription like service connect or safety connect the key fob will continue to work long after the phone app functionality dies.
We got the 2023 Sienna Limited, and when we picked it up a few months before summer, the key fob worked, but then, when the weather got colder, I wanted to try the key fob remote, and it did not work. The phone app remote start still works, though. I brought it to the dealership, but they passed it to me to call Toyota. I called Toyota and spoke with them for an hour or so before I got disconnected. This is probably my last Toyota. Oh, and the annoy of changing the volume while listening to TH-cam, it would jump to the Android audio.
Just letting everybody know the remote start should work on your FOB. Believe this 15 dollar sub is for the phone application remote start. I just tried on 2021 Highlander and it worked from fob. Please check yourself by pressing lock button twice, then a third time and HOLDING for awhile. Try more than once in case it doesn’t register properly at first.
Your car is still new enough it won’t work next year and if it does you got the 10 year.
This is not just a 2018 model thing, it’s just that you 2018 owners are just starting to see the problem when the 3 years is up. I have a 2016 Lexus RX. It does not remote start via key fob unless I subscribe. It’s major bullshit. I understand having a paid subscription if you are using the app on your phone via cellular connection. But not the key fob. They are literally disabling a feature that is built in to the vehicle unless you pay them.
This actually goes back to 2015 and new vehicles. 2014 Toyota/Lexus and older had a option to buy a factory remote starter that was a one time fee.
A feature they charge you for no less, nor is it mentioned in the TOS that it is linked to providing feed back data! False advertising at its finest as well
Was only able to use remote start for the 1st 6 months, and now it won't work at all!~ Mine is a 2021 TRD Sport Taco 4x4, was the dealerships service manager lease vehicle!~
That is bullshit in more ways then ever, paying to use a feature that is on the vehicle that would be useful in winter time, but this just showing u how greedy companies have become since covid-19!~
My only concern is the radio was switch and not sure if the Toyota Connect will work now with it, as u need to input stuff!~
So, I have a 2018 Camry XSE that has the base radio, so no remote start. My question is, is the remote start module built into the upgraded JBL radio itself? Since remote start seems to be keyed in on what radio package the car has? I called the dealer today and it’s a bit pricey to have them install remote start and it’s aftermarket. Thanks
@2:48 An app that starts your phone? Tell me more😜
Would these same guide lines apply to a 2022 Lexus RX350? On our recently purchased used unit, the remote start feature is not working.
You don’t need a subscription to use auto start on all push button start Toyota’s. Just push the lock button 2 times then push it a third time and hold it until the lights flash. The subscription is for starting with the app. 🤦♂️
I don’t think that is the case. I don’t have a subscription and I’ve tried to remote start my Toyota and it doesn’t work. Push the button twice then hold for the third time. Nothing happens. Toyota told me I needed a subscription to remote start my car using the key fob.
I have a 2020 rav4 xle premium

@@angelamiller2611. Trust me it will but it is finicky. I have a 21 Tacoma and a 23 Highlander and they both do. I have shown multiple people and it’s never failed. You have to push really close together. Click click and click n hold till the lights flash. But it only works on push button start.
I'm so confused because I have a lightly used 2023 Toyota 4Runner Off Road Premium, and it still has the Toyota app, Wi-Fi, Service Connect, Drive Connect, and Safety Connect...but says nothing about Remote Connect, paid or otherwise.
Meanwhile Toyota's support page specifically mentions it as present in 2023 4Runners, lol.
Have you tried doing a software update on your 4runner? That should download the remote connect app if it supported by it.
@@AskforBryan apparently ONLY the TRD Pro supports it, assuming the JBL harness or something. Toyota has told me it’s not available via OEM parts or after marketing install, aside from complete third-party. So no integration with their app.
They really bury the model support. Sorta lame.
they advertise it as a seperate feature through the app that you would have to pay for which i can understand however if you disconnect the data feed back info they disconnect your actual physical key fob. i feel this is an easy class action lawsuit as its not in the TOS and easily a false advertisement for a feature you paid for upfront outside the cost of using the subscription app services

Unfortunately I bought a tacoma 2022, and is the worst car I ever had. First time with toyota, taking a chance because people say is the best cars in the market. Mine comes with bluetooth and Apple car play problems, my calls after some time, in the other side they don’t hear me good, or a siren noise hear in the background, the tech advisors doesn’t know how to fixed, customer service from toyota doesn’t have any idea what’s going on “of course they know” - since the car is basically my tool of work Im f. And yes the key remote start, stop working after my free trial expire, I ask the toyota tech advisor, and they say; “there is not harness connected to the remote, you probably never had that option” is a shame the ignorant the techs can be. (You are solving question for many of us). -at the end, I will never in my life buy a toyota again, never! Gas mileage is lower compared with a Ram V8. Is ridiculous how those new tacomas consume gas. And for all of you guys with 2020-2023 tacomas, the depreciation on this are going wild now ending the 2023. Never in a million years would I have ever thought that cars would come with subscriptions for stuff, outside of manufactures like BMW and Mercedes. To see that even bargain basement car brands are now offering subscription services for their vehicles....does not bode well for the future. Luckily I don't really care for these features, so I'll probably end up getting base models from now on.

The connect service is $80 a year as of 2023 to start the vehicle, the SOS is free for 3-5 years. There are other subscriptions but yeah I was told that I could add remote key fob start to my car for $540.
If it's a time limited feature then they are using it as a sales pitch with the intent of extorting you later. I won't sign the agreement required to enable the trial periods if it gives me only time limited access to features of the car. I will discount any time limited feature from my considerations. So Toyota don't have remote start. I have one of the early versions of this "revenue stream" model in a 2014 Jeep GC. When the trial period ended I let it lapse and just ignored all their demands for money. But I still have remote start. All the crap on the screen that they thought was value add was worthless compared to what a cell phone gives you. There are better gas price apps and navigation apps for free than they want to rent to me. By trying to make the dashboard a walled garden they just made it worthless.
Service connect and safety connect are free connected services for like 10 years, and in most cases, as long as the car has remote start to begin with, the key fob part of the remote start should work for that entire 10 years.
Other option, spend a few hundred dollars and just add an aftermarket remote start system.

My question is why do car companies limit subscription models to just a few things? Why not have the Bluetooth function as a subscription? How about the ignition function as a subscription? “I can’t start my car. I forgot to renew my subscription!”😂🤬
Now days when futures implemented are the ones deciding the model to buy, Toyota decided to rob you will only push customers away even more. I'm on a decision now for corolla cross and because of this lack of free app I will look into Ford, MG, or even Tesla Y, Xpeng etc. They has plenty of futures that Toyota will ever dream to have and for free of course.
I was hoping to start my Cross ahead in the winter time but apparently I need to look into competition. Good luck Toyota into the Jungle you got.
For what only requires 10 seconds of time to deliver, you dragged it out to 15 minutes just to say, Toyota is charging for remote start. Thanks for wasting my time
Did Toyota forget Honda still makes cars. Keep it up and their loyal customers will be driving Honda"s
You did not clarify anything. Everything points toward what Year, Model, and Trim with what Option Packages as whether or not you have Remote Start and the Service Connect. Actually, you made it more confusing, and the video was too long as you were totally in the cloud. Sorry, you did not help me but may be someone really caught on. Best way to know is to use your vehicle FOB and check if it works. Then call Toyota or your Dealer to figure out a resolution.
Toyota has it listed differently for every car, audio package, and even the year built. Check the Toyota connected services website to see if your exact car is supported.
I switched to Ford. My Explorer is a much higher quality vehicle without any of this nonsense!
Update: They are charging for remote start.
Just on the app, yes.
Toyota is so trash, people think Toyota is the best but would it really be the best if they have to make you pay to use the car that you already bought?
Supra: you guys have remote start?
This is so wrong it just happened to ares.
They never told us anything.
as if paying $36,000 for the vehicle is not enough. They better fix it before my free trial runs out, or this will be my first and last Toyota. I will not buy a subscription to use anything on my car. If the GPS is not available, I will use my Garmin. If I cannot start it, I will install an after market starter. I don't have a smart phone, and have no intentions of buying one. I will just buy anther Honda instead. I paid for it to be installed on the car, it better work.
You say "you should look into this" I thought that was what this video is about. If Toyota want to plays games with me as a customer I'll go elsewhere due to unneeded confusion and principle. Automakers intentionally try to make comparisons difficult and confusing. Reminds me of trying to compare bed mattresses!👎
I was really getting into Toyota. I thought they were great but my eyes are open. Toyota is shameful and disgraceful. Profit over people mentality. Restrict standard features for a dime and loose many customers. I went to my spouse and said that we are no longer going to buy Toyota’s for the foreseeable future.
I was considering buying a new Camry. Not after seeing this. I'll stick with Honda who doesn't require subscriptions to operate standard features every car has.
Remote start your only priority?
@AskforBryan That's besides the point! It's the principle! Today remote start, tomorrow our AC units!
Nah, just for heated seats, heated steering wheel, and Navigation….but definitely NOT for remote start…gotcha…😂😂😂
I wish I would have heard all this before it's ridiculous mom bought a new 2024 down payment of 25 Grand to get out of the showroom only for me to find out this petty s*** I was just driving a loner Volkswagen and that s*** wasn't going on I was able to auto start it and way more user-friendly they should give me back my money for the auto start take out the stupid butt and give me a regular key but it's ridiculous to pay extra for an option and then pay extra for the option
Get on with it! Get to the point
they charge
They forgot to keep it simple stupid. This is a leadership vacuum issue.
This is the future. Cars are now just computers on wheels. SMH☹️
This video didn’t age well
Why would anyone want remote start? It's bad for the engine to let it idle. Toyota's own user-manuals tell us to start the car and drive it immediately. That's to warm-up the engine properly while getting proper circulation of the engine oil.
Remote-start is illegal to use in Australia, because their must be a licensed driver in control of the vehicle at all times.
Remote start is mostly to warm up or cool down the HVAC system. You aren't doing any harm to the car when it idles anyway.
This is so much bull crud.
Toyota STOP doing this to customers. Stop.
