For most Americans, their home is their largest investment - and it normally appreciates over the years to keep up with other real estate. There are a lot of subscription services with a home:
    1) Taxes
    2) Insurance
    3) Mortgage payments
    4) Electricity
    5) Water
    6) Natural gas/oil
The car is the next big ticket item an American buys - and it loses money like crazy.
We already pay a lot of subscription services, too: (ICE)
    1) Car payment
    2) insurance
    3) taxes
    4) Oil changes
    5) Breaks
    6) Muffler
    7) Tires
I doubt car buyers will want to pay another subscription service.

Most of what you're listing, are not subscriptions; they're recurring bills (like the fuel and oil changes). But you don't pay a subscription service to turn the lights on, or to open the doors, or use the door locks. When you pause off the house, no one can keep you from using those.
When you purchase a car eith options, the purchase price INCLUDES those options. Any power the manufacturer has over that car, ends RIGHT THERE. Paying a monthly fee to use those, is evil and should be outlawed.
But then where would Musk and all the other woke CEOs be?

Approximately one year ago, I bought a Toyota Tundra for $76K, over $80K after taxes. I live in the Midwest, where it has just recently started to have below freezing temperatures. The other day, I logged on to the Toyota App to start my car, remotely. Only to learn that my free service had ended, and that I could renew my subscription for only $15.95/MO! I about went ballistic. After spending $80K for a vehicle, Toyota want to charge you another $16/MO, for eternity! This recurring revenue BS has to stop. BMW charged to allow you, their customers, to actually use the heated seats which were already built into your car. I use my remote start maybe a dozen times per winter. I guess that I’ll be getting into a cold car from now on. That is, until I buy my next car, which will allow me to start my car remotely. And, it will not be a Toyota. If they are willing to screw over their loyal customers, I am done with them. They had enough push-back to get them to stop. We need to do the same to Toyota. Please comment if you have been put in a similar position.

These guys are behind the curve. I have a 2014 Ford Fusion with a $14 per month subscription to Microsoft and traffic mapping (if I were interested in it) as well as bi-annual map data updates with all the new roads for $250 plus I think the vehicle needs to schedule a half or full day dealer service drop off to get the data updated (although it may be wireless). The alternative: google maps on the desktop that slides into my phone with real-time traffic flows for free (and there are alternatives). However, I know there are thousands of vehicle owners who just go along with the gag allowing the siphoning to happen and they are happy while the factory is happy.

That's not going to dissuade people from buying a vehicle if they want it and by burying the cost into the purchase price, they will increase the customer satisfaction and increase the perceived value of the vehicle. Subscription may not fly! But what if they were to...
Going back not to many years when the iPhone came out all apps were free or a one off payment, now people are willing to pay subscriptions.
Sports on TV were included with a TV licence or have to put up with adverts now many pay extra to watch sports and subscribe to TV stations.
Why do companies ask for subscription based services? Revenues! With falling revenues companies look to make up the short fall.
    The Automotive industry.
We are seeing BEV sales grow at an unprecedented rate, we are also learning that BEV's are lasting a lot longer than first thought. At some time in the future car sales will slow down. Cars lasting longer, less accidents on the roads. As that point approaches manufactures will look to bolster their income.
I'm not in favour of subscriptions, I don't pay extra for sports, I only pay a yearly amount for a couple of phone Apps. I really enjoy driving. So in future years will I pay a subscription? Who knows.

Uh these new subscription services are for their gas cars right? These cars are not computers on wheels so they do not know if you have them parked in a garage right? The app has the ability to turn on climate control…. uh but these are gas cars that need to run the engine to start an air conditioner. Unless Toyota can guarantee somehow that the vehicle is in a safe location to turn the engine on….. how long until some kid turns on the gas car in the garage with this app and kills people with carbon monoxide? This could very well happen unless Toyota can build intelligence into the car to know if it is enclosed.
Now I know that remote start has been a thing for years using a key fob. But putting this into an app along with remote climate control seems to me to be becoming too hazardous. One usually knows when they use a key fob….but how hard is it to mistakenly hit the wrong button in an app or forthe app to malfunction?
As to whether I would pay for the functionality they offer in the app…No way! Hell I would not even pay monthly for what Tesla gives in their app either….however it does enhance the car when those features come with it.

People can go to other places to get vehicles.

in Canada, people are seeing more and more, how bad ev battery metals mining is for the planet. also seeing Tesla's burning. horror stories about price of replacing batteries. people i know say dont get even the hybrids. regarding subscription, it is unreliable and the remote is also pretty much trash. the dealerships is aware of the remote start problems

Actually it’s no free in most cars, not even in Tesla. The SIM-card and data subricption costs it’s not free. VW is charging a lot for this and many others a little less like Tesla and Volvo. Hyundai and Kia are also going to take your money after a initial free period. No telecom company let a car company use a data connection for free so a car that is internet connected are going to cost at some time.

@@catmanscarchannel with tesla, you can use your phone to provide data link for the car, and use navigation app. that gives consumers a choice. 12 bucks for this features? what is next? 12 bucks for a few other features? soon it will add up to 50 bucks per month. the cost of data is much lower.

    • @catmanscarchannel
      @catmanscarchannel ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@qilu2004 That of course you can in 95% of all cars. All my latest cars had that. But to remotely use things in the car when no phone is there you have to have a data subscription.

    • @qilu2004

@@catmanscarchannel but why was there no charge in the past? also, if one opt not to pay 12 bucks, can he still use the navigation app with data link thru phone? why not just charge a fee for data then? it seems to me that they may want to charge multiple features and squeeze a lot more than what they can get from a data package.

  • @dankitchen621

I hope consumers don't buy any vehicle that requires a subscription for "standard features". If the car manufactures are successful at selling monthly subscriptions for "standard features" It won't be long before we are all paying hundreds of dollars per month just to operate our cars.
