This was great! I think you should do “Across the Sea” - lots of interesting chord/key changes there!

Hey thanks! That's easily my favorite song by the band (and among my favorites by anyone...ever) so I will definitely be hitting that one soon!

Bro, I’m a big fan of Weezer and I’ve always loved analyzing their songs. Please analyze more songs!!! (Pinkerton sounds challenging to analyze)

This song really is crazy. I loved it for it's walking downs in the bass notes. Especially the modulated chords play a big part in giving the song it's colour and beauty. Also, the bridge is really interesting. I came up with a possible explanation for it:
F functions as the major modulation of Db's minor parallel Abm. This function is very powerful since it builds tension to resolve into Abm, it's home. At the same time this powerful chord is the root note of the key of this song, F. They find the transition back to the F key by playing the fifth of the F key, C. This one also has a very powerful function, since it also points at it's home note, dictating F as the root note again.
Another interesting feature in that part is, that the listener expects a resolution immediately after F. The listener is kept waiting by putting in B, as another suspense note, which lets the listener expect another resolution. This makes this part so interesting and exciting. The transition is helped by the change of the scales of the vocal melody, which with B changes from the notes of the Db scale to those of F.
I really like experimenting with that stuff in my music as well.

Great analysis (and this is coming from a pianist who was looking for something more in depth than the existing guitar tab breakdowns). Bravo!

That'd be a great one...I've got a surprisingly long list of tunes to tackle but I may just have to jump "Falling For You" to the top!

Very well done!! My brain is too slow and I’m not as an advanced player to be able process a lot of it so quickly, but it’s great and I’ll be watching again. Awesome song. I’d love to see you do ‘Across the Sea’ as well. Thanks! Can’t wait to check out your podcast as well.

Hey man, I just found your video in my recommended, and I'm so glad I did! This was super fun to watch, I've always loved that light and airy section after the bridge, and your analysis only further deepened my love for it. Although I am suprised you didn't mention the picardy third in this song. The very last chord starts out as D minor but one the guitars soon slide up to an F# making it D major. It's really neat sounding, one of the few picardy thirds I like.

Woah, you are SO right on about that picardy third! I honestly didn't think to mention it because it felt kinda incidental and subtle as the song disintegrates at the end. But it's still an effective little harmonic wrinkle... Thank you for that observation AND for observing the video in general!

    I subscribed immediately. Great stuff.
I always liked this song & I consider it somewhere in RC’s best songs. Now I have more of an appreciation for it. To my ears I had assumed that the verse was a root-note descending progression. The slash chords make it cooler. And that bridge is crazy.

One suggestion: showing the chord positions on the screen would be amazing, especially weird chords like that #11

Coincidentally, Weezer premiered "High As A Kite" live tonight in Albany, NY and I happened to be there! Check out my iPhone video of it here: th-cam.com/video/Ic0kiGSLRPo/w-d-xo.html The performance is a bit...lacking - particularly in the bridge - but I'm so happy the band decided to try it out live.
