Prince's rhythm guitar playing was exactly as you described in the video. My son started out playing just riffs and rhythm comping, and he can attest to the fact that he became more competent, far more expediently, as a result, as well as having a better understanding of dynamics within a group.
"sultans of swing" is a complete course on comping. ignore the solos......by the time you learn the rhythm you know a great deal about comping. add a few inversions and sus notes and you are there :)
Thank you, Eddie. I'm coming back to the guitar after more than 25 years, and when I started, I was getting tips from a friend who showed me power chords. I tried learning lead on my own, and never really got into actually playing rhythm like you show here.
Yes .. nice Inversions as we jazzers call them When using the same strings that is Once we start using different strings they’re still inversions but not what we usually call 1st inversion 2nd inversion , 3rd inversion like the ones your showing us in the beginning this very important lesson Thanks
Definitely improved my rhythm playing a lot learning this years ago, and vital to feeling comfy moving up and down the fretboard. It's like the harmonic glue of whatever chord progression you're playing. This + memorizing note names and knowing how all the different chords relate (common tones, what triads make up 7th chords, etc) will enable you to become a comping wizard and really get creative harmonically. 90% of my songwriting is just experimenting with pivoting chords off common and leading tones lol.
I'm 68, trying to improve my playing, make it more interesting, and this video is burning my brain! But, you do a great job explaining things. Now I just have to put in the hard work of learning. Thank you!
I'm actually a drummer but after 40 plus years of leaving it up to the guitar player to write a hit song i gave up and started to learn how to play guitar as well and when it comes to TH-cam teachers your a rockstar
This is so helpful! I always get told "learn triads" and I sat and drilled them, but I never really understood what I was supposed to *do* with it until now. Thank you!
For me in hindisight. Learn to identify the note by sound not sight. Then stringing the instrument (floyd). Then tuning... hear the note. Barre chords up and down the real estate. Rhythm in a four on the floor back beat than swing time. Then learn your gear.
I started about 8am with break for lunch😂 seriously tho, that's great your still playing and learning as it definitely keeps the cogs turning lol...I've been at it since 84 self taught lefty playing righty. Hi from Scotland
@@robertkidd6270 I'm a sad lefty-lefty starting to really enjoy the instrument thanks to TH-cam. Gotta now start protecting my digits from too much use as I could be getting early signs of arthritis.
Theory lets you figure all this out on your own. It's really not so boring once someone explains it in a way that connects with you. Theory and scales are basically just showing you which steps on a ladder go together.
A great lesson. Thanks. I've been a bass player for 40+ years but I play rhythm too and, at the moment I'm trying to improve my rhythm playing and increase my knowledge of inversions.
Great lesson and demonstration Eddie. It's easy to base all the shapes off a first finger barre and slide them up and down the fretboard. The great Billy Gibbons frequently switches between the A and D triad shapes (or the same shapes in different keys) whilst maintaining the same root (Fool for your Stockings springs to mind)
That third position A triad with an added A string is my favourite chord.I use it way too much but if your guitar is intonated and in tune it’s very sweet sounding
Great video Eddie! I was exactly like you and waited over 20 years before someone showed me triads. I was noodling around with my triads one day and realized ahhh That's Van Halen. Then ahh That's Crazy Train. But what you just said, 1,4,5 triads over the 1 chord just opened a new door. THANK YOU! A couple other tips for people who didn't figure it out yet. Arpeggiate those notess going up on that first A triad then down on that first D and any combination of the 1,4,5. Then move that to the 1,2,3 strings same thing up 1,2,3 then down 2,3,4 strings. Will keep you noodling for hours with some really cool musical stuff.
HI Eddie... I started as a student rhythm player by choice... I learnt much of what you teach here.. And it's great to see you portray this lesson😊 skillfully! Thanks
For my ears, I prefer I IV bVII, which implies a more Mixolydian vibe to match the blues coming. Triads over an A drone would be Amazing, Dmajor and Gmajor
Your teaching how to make music man ! Rhythm with vamped chords or variables like that are what makes notable songs, in that vamp I could hear right away Huey Lewis and the news, do u believe in luv.

The honesty and "down-to-earthiness" of some statements got me into subscribing. Keep that, brother!
The more I live the more I come to realisation that triads are everything on guitar. A deep understanding is a must.

Great advice pal
I of packed it in if it took 23 years to cop that but fair dues
Thank you, Eddie. I'm coming back to the guitar after more than 25 years, and when I started, I was getting tips from a friend who showed me power chords. I tried learning lead on my own, and never really got into actually playing rhythm like you show here.

Learning open tunings highlights these partials from the outset...highly recommend it to all 🎶

One of the best lessons on actually putting triads to use. Thanks!
Glad you think so!
Great lesson…Ty, Eddie and GMM…anyone who has not taken Eddie’s rhythm and lead course is loco!
Most people haven't 🙄
Where can the lesson be found?
I'm actually a drummer but after 40 plus years of leaving it up to the guitar player to write a hit song i gave up and started to learn how to play guitar as well and when it comes to TH-cam teachers your a rockstar
I'm learning guitar 🎸 at 44. :) I use to play trumpet in high school. lol
You're
This is so helpful! I always get told "learn triads" and I sat and drilled them, but I never really understood what I was supposed to *do* with it until now. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Yeah me too
Excellent lesson! So many harmonies in such a simple small space, and outside of the proverbial box! Dig it!
Ok.... that was a really good lesson and something, that in 20 years of playing, I did not know anything about until now! Thank you!
For me in hindisight. Learn to identify the note by sound not sight. Then stringing the instrument (floyd). Then tuning... hear the note. Barre chords up and down the real estate. Rhythm in a four on the floor back beat than swing time. Then learn your gear.
Right on Eddie, one of your very finest lessons yet! I was missing the 2nd/3rd/4th string version of the C shape... thanks!
learning that now....coincidently. I"m 61 (playing off/on since 9). Jack Ruch is a master at this... Exciting topic....related to CAGE...
I started about 8am with break for lunch😂 seriously tho, that's great your still playing and learning as it definitely keeps the cogs turning lol...I've been at it since 84 self taught lefty playing righty.

Right on! I love Jack’s playing. Nice guy too!
Once again - a great exercise to expand our playing and not ONE SINGLE boring theory or scale lesson - thanks much !!
Glad you enjoyed it!

A great lesson. Thanks. I've been a bass player for 40+ years but I play rhythm too and, at the moment I'm trying to improve my rhythm playing and increase my knowledge of inversions.
I had been experimenting with these concepts. It's great to know I'm heading in the right direction.
Great vid. It’s like playing “lead rhythm,” if that’s what you want. Certainly adds dimension!
@Really_is_all_about_the_Bass I’m not even familiar with DeMartini, but I’ll check him out. Thanks for the tip!
OK, It took me 30 years but the best lesson I have had since then. Much thanks

Bro this has got to be the best explanation for triads ever! :D
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much, I am re-learning Guitar again
That's great!
what a great lesson... thanks for sharing... going to start practicing this now!! so exciting!!!
Check out "Never be clever - Herman Brood".. the opening riff is basically all of these triads played over a droning A string.
That third position A triad with an added A string is my favourite chord.I use it way too much but if your guitar is intonated and in tune it’s very sweet sounding
SO DO MI
@@pierrengan7331 lol
Awesome lesson Cheers Eddie (Legend)😊😎🎸☮️✨✨✨🎸👍
Mind blown! Thanks for blasting that "secret".
Love this. Would love to see a minor triad version.
Do it yourself. Replace all major thirds with the minor ones. C# becomes C, F# becomes F and G# becomes G.
Boy, your first example immediately brought to mind the A-D-E progression in the Allman Brothers "Revival (Love is Everywhere)." Great lesson. Thanks.
Thanks for posting this! As an intermediate guitar player this is very helpful! I subscribed to your channel because of this video!
Fantastic application. Thank you.
This was a great lesson! Thank you very much.
Glad you liked it!
Very nice lesson. Thank you. Malcolm
Good stuff Eddie. Love the new pedal BTW.
Thanks!
Thanks Eddie! Amazing how you can improvise with triads and double stops to accompany the Rhythm! Nice!
Such a fantastic guitar lessson you are a ledgend!
Great video Eddie!

I have been doing this my whole life by using the pentatonic scales and never even realized this, this is cool man!
Absolutely love the chord combo
Great lesson, thanks 👏
Always really useful tips.Thanks!
Glad to hear that!
Gmm is the best...n Eddie is one of their greatest...they have the best player/teachers of anything out there
Thanks!
Terrific lesson!
Full Props on the video. Well presented, well done! 😎🇨🇦🎸

brilliant lesson, thank you. so useful. x
Yup subscribed. This vid was exactly what I needed and I’ll be watching it a lot
Top 5 guitar teacher on TH-cam brother!
Good lesson, apply the caged method of thinking to this and it makes more sense
You went from I got a little change in my pocket going jing-a-ling-a-ling to jump might as well jump.
Randy Rhoads - crazy train is this pretty much
If you could only teach one lesson on guitar,...This is it !
Thx Eddie, great lesson
You are amazing ! Thank you
Happy to help!
Super interesting. I've been super focused on major and minor triads for a long time but haven't really used them this way.
Thank you for the insight
a VERY useful lesson!
Excellent. Thank you.
You are welcome!
7:21 Thats the way of Randy Rhoads composition, check Crazy Train.
A lot of information in this video...I can definitely see how this would help your rhythm playing...take some time and learn all the chord variations
Randy Rhodes does this on Crazy Train. It's descending, but still the same idea with the resounding A.
For my ears, I prefer I IV bVII, which implies a more Mixolydian vibe to match the blues coming. Triads over an A drone would be Amazing, Dmajor and Gmajor
What guitar are you playing? It’s gorgeous.
I'm getting EVH vibes off those triad progressions.
This is amazing, thank you
You're very welcome!
Eddie, what is that guitar? It is so cool looking. A Tele body with a Gibson neck?
It’s a “TelePaul” style guitar built by Ian Anderson of IA Guitars!
You are exccellent teacher tks for tips
You are welcome
I will always come back here as long as I play guitar thank you G
Really interested it getting more into this
brooooooooooooooo that is insane, thanks alot
Great lesson, thank you. Love that gold top, who makes it?
Ian Anderson of IA Guitars! No relation to Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull lol
That just opened a bunch of doors. Thanks for the lesson!
Funny enough, I use the exact A sequence to spice my version of Sultan of Swings...ahahaha!!!
The same type of comping even works in Metal, check out the verse sections of Crazy Train 🚂
What guitar are you using? I really love the shape.
Sweet. Sweet. Sweet!!!!!!
very very cool...thank u so much for sharing.
What goldtop is that? Looks and sounds fantastic
Awesome! Thx for the insight!
Your teaching how to make music man ! Rhythm with vamped chords or variables like that are what makes notable songs, in that vamp I could hear right away Huey Lewis and the news, do u believe in luv.
Mine was picking hand technique which you'll find is a larger eureka moment.
thats exactly how I traverse the neck and make key changes in general, with that particular set of triads.
I am new on playing guitar and I really need an intensive training
Thanks for the video, i would agree rhythm is the biggest stubbling block for most people including myself!
Reminds me of the song Jump!
Dude I love that guitar.. is astoning... is it a Grestch?
beautiful. super cool. thanks!
How can you do this in other keys w/o an open drone A note .
I was wondering how long before GMM was going to cover this. I thought it would be a great course.
Reminds me of the verse parts of "Crazy Train."
Thank you sir 🙏
8:00 EureKA....thats how John Mayer does it...I guess!
