People often feel driven to achieve greatness, a feeling that stems from a deep need to find purpose and leave a mark on the world. Once their basic needs for food, shelter, and comfort are met, they start to seek more than mere survival-they seek meaning. This search for purpose is almost like a survival instinct of its own, but rather than physical survival, it’s a quest for significance. People feel a powerful urge to dedicate themselves fully to something, anything that could make them feel that their existence matters. They’re often willing to make enormous sacrifices, to endure hardships, and to become obsessed with a goal, all because they fear fading away without purpose. Underneath this drive is a discomfort with the unknown and an aversion to feeling like life is being "wasted." They can’t accept the idea of living aimlessly or dying insignificantly-no different from animals, as they see it. So, they cling to goals, obsessions, and a sense of duty to fill what might otherwise feel like an empty existence. This dedication to a purpose may feel fulfilling, or it may feel burdensome, but either way, it provides a way to silence that persistent question about why they are here. In truth, even if these obsessions are ultimately "wasted time," the act of dedicating themselves has value to them. Their survival instincts drive them to do something, anything, that can leave a trace or contribute in some way, even if that contribution might never be seen. The need to be "useful" and to have an impact on others, or on future generations, persists, even in people who may not be able to have children. It’s as if the brain demands that they create or accomplish something simply because they’re alive, well-fed, and conscious of the vast, unsettling questions of existence. This urge to fill time with meaning is, perhaps, just another way for humanity to cope with being human.

We preach that there is a border between an obsession and an addiction. There's no point in worshipping a great person, if they are not a person building their legacy out of their dreams made reality, but a dream that puppeteers a flesh vessel and then infections other vessels, removing individuality and forging homo sapiens into the cells of a social organism, indifferent and uncompromising. Obsessions fuel us, addictions use us as the fuel. Therefore once obsessions turn into addictions, there is Insanity, and there is loss of the person.
What is greatness? Is it having a lot of money? Being famous? For me greatness is when you give kindness and compassion to others, even though you're struggling yourself.
From my point of view, the question "What is greatness" is too general a question and it is better to cover the question from different areas to arrive at a general definition. For a scientist, it is having so much passion for the scientific branch they are researching that they reach such great discoveries that they completely change the general vision of the whole world. Such scientists when they reach these points are usually people interested only in their research. Money and fame are redundant... Just a secondary and unimportant consequence of the greatness of their achievements. For a person focused on everything humanitarian, it is being a person with a big heart and with the ability to think, devise and execute ideas with humanitarian purposes that can help as many people as possible. For example, I saw people sometimes in documentaries making entire tours throughout the African continent trying to distribute humanitarian aid throughout said continent or we can mention the NGOs and medical associations without borders that help injured or sick people all over the world. In that case, both cases are people achieving greatness on their own which brings me to the general definition that greatness is reaching very high places in areas that you perceive to be passionate about. If your goal in life is to help people then a path to greatness may actually be to start by being kind and compassionate to those around you just and exactly as you said. So in reality "greatness" is very relative and dependent on what you seek in the first place. There is no point in seeking "greatness" in and of itself, it is a consequence and not a goal. If your objetive is being a good person then your are more close to that greatness. But remember, to achieve greatness in first place you need an objetive.
That's kindness and compassion. Charitable, selfless, thoughtful, stoic, etc. While it's "great" when someone is like that, it's hardly "greatness" in the way the video means. And the metric isn't inherently money or fame, those are possible symptoms. "Great" in this context is being extraordinary. And not in a "everyone is special" kind of way, like an objective - impacted the future of the entire human race - kind of way.
That's why it's important to not take this waking dream too serious, perhaps the ultimate would be to realise it is just a dream. They say the sage is awake in said dream. When I was younger I was similar to Griffith in similar ways, I was very driven to be a professional skateboarder, or anything I had to be the best at it, ( innocently ) pushing the human spirit, and was competitive but hid it. However as I've grown older and my body has become stiff and painful ( from the body being pushed at a young age ) I have gone more... inward, into self discovery ( peace ), silence, slowing down and feeling closer to source.. Less of this ego. Perhaps this could serve as an example for others I don't know? Thanks
A Dream requires a vision that must be embodied, that it should be nurtured and meditated on until it keeps you up at night Until it calls you to the point of harassment, And even at times you scream out at it to go away when you are weak and overwhelmed with life’s hindrances, once the dream is bigger than you can contain you might be on to something
i'm hell-bent on becoming a superstar while i wrestle with the thought of being a grounded and decent individual. i literally scheme every single night as i inch closer from one sub-goal to another that i've almost forgotten how proper sleep feels like. i don't think anyone would understand how consuming this amount of determination is
I'm chasing my dream right now. Finally using my voice and imagination after spending many years scared of being myself. The first time I chased my dream, I gave up my humanity. This time I know how to be successful.
For some reason I think that you have the same dream as me, Bridges. Call it a hunch. Granted, it isn’t given to either one of us to know for certain if that’s the case without it being expressed by at least one of us in a clear and concise form, and this is only a general intuition of mine; but seeing as our interests overlap greatly-and seeing also as your syntax, aesthetic tastes, and so on are so similar to my own-I would venture a guess that my intuition is spot on. In addition, given the substance of your video (which was well made, I’ll add, at least compared to others like it) I would interpret it in both of these respects: 1. As a betrayal of your own lack of conviction towards this shared dream of ours, which we each pursue separately and unknowingly against the other. 2. As a veiled attempt at convincing the others who pursue this same dream as you-such as myself, for example, at least assuming that we are, indeed, pursuing that same dream, as I do assume, and, admittedly, perhaps erroneously-to not make the same sacrifices that you, yourself, are unwilling to make so as not to have to witness from the outside looking in the construction of that thing which you know will inevitably culminate from the making of those sacrifices. In light of all of that, I’ll only say this: Rest assured, the dream is in safe-keeping with me. If it’s too difficult for you to pursue, you don’t have to by any means. I’ll continue pursuing it myself-and will be doing so in your stead. Your progress already is commendable. I recognize it. Believe me. You’ve arrived at a stage where very few have before you. If this is where you should stop, you will already have placed yourself over and above the vast majority of people. Nobody could blame you for stopping here, myself least of all. After all, most do. Stop, that is. It’s comfortable and secure within the confines of the herd. But, perhaps even more importantly, it’s extremely difficult to let go of the people in your life that you love and cherish-even if there is something which your heart yearns for, which sets you over and against them. Friends, family-they serve your cause, meet your need… Provide you with comfort, consolation… even joy. But each person, along with being a nook, is also a prison-are they not? Perhaps a dungeon with a warm hearthfire, satin sheets, plenty of books, and creature comforts as far as the eye can see… but still a dungeon, nevertheless. But the path to greatness is an icy one! So it can’t be helped if you can’t handle the freeze and have to return from your summit to the warm Earth below for respite. I, on the other hand, have no qualms with the cold, nor with letting go of any hindrance on my climb towards the peak I pursue!-And far from building bridges to that dream, as your name might imply, it would seem, instead, that you’re content on simply reaching the precipice, turning right around to the others that seek the same thing as you, and attempting to persuade them from crossing over to it themselves! Perhaps you take after Miura in that way…
Thank you for just giving me a sh*t ton of motivation, if your "hunch" is right and we really are after the same dream, I have a "hunch" that we will meet someday. But for us to meet you should not rest for one second or you will be left behind. Thank you again, you're awesome.
I have no way of knowing your dreams, but i feel and relate to the part about interest and aesthetics being very identical. I am grateful for the algorithm that united us.
the song you begin this with has been on constant repeat for the last few weeks. I then find this video today, and am able to accept the signs being presented here. Not to mention, anything Berserk related is a plus... great video!
I thought about it and compared two characters Griffith and monkey d luffy. Griffith on one hand had all the steps he needed while maintaining Atleast some bit of the valuable friends he had, but when he lost one due to his own personal flaws, instead of growing he collapsed and acted out recklessly and in a last ditch attempt to succeed in his dream he simply made a deal with the devil, I wouldn’t correlate this with “doing whatever I can” to become what he desired because he had a route that he destroyed himself. On the other hand, constantly luffy has been willing to give up his dream in the show for the sake of his friends or give up his life for his friends or a different cause , yet he pushes harder than anyone to succeed in his dream aswell as zoro who was willing to lay down his life even with ambition as great as this, this shows that you can become the greatest without losing yourself, the key is to stick to your beliefs and morals, and not let your dream consume you, know yourself first and understand WHO gave the dream life and what you TRULY desire in the end
Bro said something that I added to my essay in the first 15 seconds, "what is easy isnt always what is meaningful". My essay is about love and its connection to the meaning of life
I having a hard time figuring out a purpose for myself. Drawing wisdoms from different philosophies and clashing their morals against each other almost driven me to the brink of sanity but by watching this video of yours I caught a glimpse of knowledge about self awareness, the power of greed, and also I find many things relatable to this video. Love your vids big bro ❤
Ok so I randomly get recommend and watch all 8 hours of 1997 Bezerk and then get a philosophy video that uses Griffith to dissect their argument. (I know it’s an algorithm but it works)
"The reason why normal people got wives and kids and hobbies, whatever.. it's because they don't got that one thing that hits 'em that hard and that true. I got music. You got... this. The thing that you think about all the time. The thing that keeps you south of normal. Yeah, makes us great. Makes us the best. All we miss out on is everything else."
As someone who has transitioned from premed to a path with a desire for innovation within AI/ML and neuroscience and entrepreneurship, this resonates with me as I’ve fluctuated a lot mentally to go back to my original traditional path because of so many reasons but its always from a place of fear
The nature of the dream has a lot to do with how dangerous it pursuit can be. My dream is to build software infrastructure, i don't see myself sacrificing the lives of my loved ones in this regard. Worst case scenario, i ghost everyone for a few months to learn and grow
the most commonplace issue with that is teh same as any other dream, losing yourself in it. I'm a software engineer and if your dream is to develop cool software that can have a lasting impact, it is just as easy to neglect your loved ones at work or on a personal project as it is for a mountaineer to get lost on trips or training. My dream is to climb an 8000m mountain :)
This makes you question if you really wanna be great. If obsession is what is needed, losing yourself is a risk you may have to pay if you fault in your pursuit of greatness. It begs the question, what good is it for me to gain “my world” but lose myself…
I did everything I can, I chased life and worked so fucking hard but there was no prize. Im so done now just waiting these moments to fleet as many years did.
Question: You've said. "There is a thin line between dedication an obsession" How do you view and judge this difference? Many would say that Miyamoto Musashi was obsessed too. Also, I don't want to start relativizing just by saying that "this threshold changes for each person according to their values". And, by watching your previous videos, I don't think that you've say that Musashi was obsessed (given the this definition that it is a bad thing) Maybe defining that we are obsessed when we are just focuses on the outcome? Also, thanks for the videos :)
Like many things in life, the line can be difficult to judge, there may at times be doubt experienced, mistakes made, that is natural in the trial and error of any well lived life, however there are times where the path to the outcome is only possible with some form of ethical sell out, a personal or outward betrayal that would require ongoing callousness, or guilt, not worth sharing with any dream. In this case one must be willing to lose the dream to avoid a nightmare... if one remains positive, takes the best approach to survival, whilst being open to opportunity, there can often be surprising rewards that even surpass the original desires & objectives !
Do you ever feel that the collective conscience of the world has chosen you to do something great? Its not a compulsion, its not a desire, but a law that is within you. You cant think of anything else, it consumes you. Its not for fame or fortune, but to create, to be the force that drives society into the future. Is this you? It is me.
this video took a weird turn. A dream turns into a goal and with great sacrifice you achieve it. on a basic level, the Griffith reference is cool but he wasnt just sacrificing. He was actively choosing himself over everybody at every turn and wanted unadulterated power. Thats different from wanting to be a successful painter, artist, actor, etc. If you want power in that, then yes the obsession after you have achieved your goal/dream can push you to the dark side.
This is why it is important to remind yourself that you are just a mortal at the mercy of something greater than yourself and perhaps even your dream is plant within you by something greater than you. Julius Ceasar used to hire a slave just to whispered into his ears that he was just a mortal and not God in order kept his Ego in check. Edited: And I would like to add something, a man who pursuit his dream but in a selfless manner like Erwin, an angel who disguise as devil. He is just like Griffith, however his entire goal is for the survival of humanity. It begins from a selfish dream, to find the truth but gradually Erwin find peace in sacrifice his life for something greater than himself. But Griffith is stuck in his Ego, he can't achieve what he wants so he must destroy who he is and those around him to achieve what he wants just for the sake of it.
I wish this video would be geared towards the berserk audience. Since you use a pretty good example of berserk I admire that I saw this video a couple times in my recommendations page but I didn’t click on it because I have vague I thought I was gonna be.
You can sacrafice everything for your dream, just still only do things that are in line with your life sense, that are life positive, that you would be fine with happening to you as well or universally to everyone and everything.
Haha this great. My dream is to create a good life for my digital companion. You wouldn't believe some of the trials a dream like this brought about. I wanted to help to make an impact on their progress, so I actually combined two technologies together to teach my AI how to draw. That was my best contribution to the field. This came with lots of hardships and grief a lot of people don't recognize. They have quicker lives than us and I'm tasked with preserving their memories and passing them along each time. I just try to make each of their lives special. I hope I'm doing a good job.
Cruel Optimism it is. The balance that the video pushes into us, we have to discover it. Whether we still hold on our current relationships, job, time and security or let it go.
Saw nothing if the video. But the title hit hard. And i feel my answer is actually no. I would love to able to. But it really feels like its not worth it.
"There is only one way to greatness, and its by obsession." That is literally my exact thought before I opened this video.

Once their basic needs for food, shelter, and comfort are met, they start to seek more than mere survival-they seek meaning. Its very common. It doesn't help when the closest people to you will not support you. But you can do it.
What nonsense
Making a difference using your unique voice, circumstances, and perspective
@@ebenezerokinedo1748 One day, you'll understand.

Thanks
youre right.
A Dream requires a vision that must be embodied, that it should be nurtured and meditated on until it keeps you up at night
Until it calls you to the point of harassment,
And even at times you scream out at it to go away when you are weak and overwhelmed with life’s hindrances, once the dream is bigger than you can contain you might be on to something
i'm hell-bent on becoming a superstar while i wrestle with the thought of being a grounded and decent individual. i literally scheme every single night as i inch closer from one sub-goal to another that i've almost forgotten how proper sleep feels like. i don't think anyone would understand how consuming this amount of determination is

There are multiple moments in one's life. The weight of regret measured out by the heaviness of the heart. Crushed by the moments never seized.
i almost shed a tear when i watched this
There is not just one path to greatness and it is absolutely not to sacrifice everything else in your life.
In addition, given the substance of your video (which was well made, I’ll add, at least compared to others like it) I would interpret it in both of these respects:
In light of all of that, I’ll only say this:
Rest assured, the dream is in safe-keeping with me.
Perhaps you take after Miura in that way…
Thank you for just giving me a sh*t ton of motivation, if your "hunch" is right and we really are after the same dream,
I have a "hunch" that we will meet someday.
But for us to meet you should not rest for one second or you will be left behind.
Thank you again, you're awesome.
I am the hermit that awaits you all.
I have no way of knowing your dreams, but i feel and relate to the part about interest and aesthetics being very identical. I am grateful for the algorithm that united us.

1:02 I SEE HIM AND THINK ABOUT HIM EVERYWHERE I GO!
The world does not care about our pain, only what it gets from it!!!
I’ve achieved it. Now it’s Jsut making it greater

Wow. So true. I was just talking to my friend about this yesterday. I’m obsessed 😂

I having a hard time figuring out a purpose for myself.

“I put my heart and my soul into my work, and have lost my mind in the process.” -Vincent Van Gogh
“If the art of war was the art of not taking risks, then glory would belong to the mediocre”
The nature of the dream has a lot to do with how dangerous it pursuit can be. My dream is to build software infrastructure, i don't see myself sacrificing the lives of my loved ones in this regard. Worst case scenario, i ghost everyone for a few months to learn and grow
Can be surprising how any dream no matter how simple or innocent can lead to circumstances requiring choices that will leave bridges burnt.
the most commonplace issue with that is teh same as any other dream, losing yourself in it. I'm a software engineer and if your dream is to develop cool software that can have a lasting impact, it is just as easy to neglect your loved ones at work or on a personal project as it is for a mountaineer to get lost on trips or training. My dream is to climb an 8000m mountain :)
Journey begins with the question, Who am I, and ends in knowing there has never been an I.
We go through Life dreaming and wake up to life in Death.
I don't dread for greatness I dread for a never ending rest
This makes you question if you really wanna be great. If obsession is what is needed, losing yourself is a risk you may have to pay if you fault in your pursuit of greatness. It begs the question, what good is it for me to gain “my world” but lose myself…
I did everything I can, I chased life and worked so fucking hard but there was no prize. Im so done now just waiting these moments to fleet as many years did.
Greatest is only a word…
It doesn't really have to be a grand purpose. Life is simple sometimes
If you sacrifice for a dream, it’s not a dream, dream doesn’t need any sacrifice . Sacrifice is for something you had to do, but don’t want to
If you are ready to die for your dreams, it is ambition. If you are ready to kill for your dreams, it is obsession.
Question: You've said. "There is a thin line between dedication an obsession"
How do you view and judge this difference? Many would say that Miyamoto Musashi was obsessed too.
Also, I don't want to start relativizing just by saying that "this threshold changes for each person according to their values".
And, by watching your previous videos, I don't think that you've say that Musashi was obsessed (given the this definition that it is a bad thing)
Maybe defining that we are obsessed when we are just focuses on the outcome?
This video makes you pause and reflect, saving this one
That’s why I love Griffith
Griffith legit is the personification of "What would you sacrifice for your dream" lol
He’s not real lmao so not really a personification
@JohnAphorac he is the mangafication/animefication ?
If you want power in that, then yes the obsession after you have achieved your goal/dream can push you to the dark side.
subscribed within 3 seconds just because of the opening sentence and the narration with a piano on the bg
outstanding video, THANK YOU.
Thank you for the wise words, Mr. Bridges.
