when i was in 3rd grade i stopped eating pig because "i thought they were cute" And my dad jokingly said to me "Lol you think pigs are cute; well don't you think cows are cute too??" and i was like huh... i do think cows are cute.... And that thought stayed with me until i finally went vegan when i was 22. Best decision ive ever made. now my actions align with my morals and its liberating!

i live in a country that doesnt have those things like vegan egg, vegan butter, vegan options. Ok, sometimes there is a vegan option like cheese and milk but is very difficult to find and sooooo expensive you cant believe it, like 5 times more expansive then not vegan foods. So when i went vegan wasnt that easy. I had to find ways to do it all myself, like my cheese, my egg, my tofu. Right now all of this are easy but i think i understand why people dont become vegan here. I meant, tofu cousts like 30 bucks. Is funny when i watch people from other places and see those vegans options, i just wish my country was that way to people try to be more sustentable.

@@nom_de_guerre_ "Veganism isn't about convenience" Oh wow, that's entitled thing to say to someone. People become vegans for many different reasons, it's not up you to judge their reasons to do so and it's not their fault that in some countries it is more difficult to find things popular among vegans - I lived in such country myself. Yes, many vegan products were created just recently, but you clearly show lack of knowledge - vegan milk is known to people for hundreds of years for example, even being used by Christians during period of Lent instead of dairy. The person you are responding to also talks about tofu, which is also known for years. In my country even things like coconut milk or peanut butter can too expensive to use them on regular basis. The widespread access to those product helped vegans in many countries and you seem to ignore it, not understanding how difficult it might be. What you are really saying is "I don't have enough empathy to understand situation of vegans in other countries".

@@nom_de_guerre_ wtf? I'm vegan, i live without those vegan options. I love to make my own cheese, my own tofu right now. I'm saying that at the beggining was more difficult. I know that veganism isnt about food. I'm just saying the rest of the world, of my country would be more sustainable if there is cheap vegan options. The industry dont care about that, but i known a lot of people that would became more sustainable if vegan milk was the same or more cheap than cow milk. The human convenience isnt sustainable in any way, but is so much worst to use animals than vegetables do to such things like milk and others. And think that the industry will crumble is a uthopia. I wish it happens, i try to not live with that, but i'm human, i'm not perfect and i understand that is more easy if there is vegan options. Sadly, the rest of the world dont think the same. Comments like yours dont help anyone just make angry and thats why a lot of people hate us and dont try.

I've found asking questions helps to avoid confusion & unnecessary confrontation. Maybe it's simply a misunderstanding?.. Either way, we can't all agree, all the time & that's not a bad thing.

You know, before I came to watch this video, my thoughts were spiraling about impulsively restricting so much food in my diet and going vegan, low-FODMAP, and sugar-free all at once. “These foods are bad, you should be happy to cut them out! If you don’t you’re a failure. You better cut them out. You HAVE to,” I kept thinking as I kept replaying the same scenarios in my head and crying about how sad a life this would be. I struggle with my digestive system everyday, so these thoughts often take a physical toll on me, whether it be to eat too much or too little or not at all out of fear of eating ‘bad’ foods. I’m still a teenager and I have so many struggles but a very limited support system so I feel alone and overwhelmed in my challenges. I often find myself in the same cycles repeating over and over and over again. I paused the video and left for a while, partially because my anxiety got the best of me. But when I came back, I unpaused the video and heard the last sentences, and teared up a bit. “I know it’s scary, but it can also be the most beautiful thing you ever do.” I really needed to hear that, something that I never hear from my parents, who often belittle and have hurt me over and over again. Thank you so much for being here.

Joanne, I love 'The Korean Vegan Cookbook'. It is beautifully written, and adaptable to both professionals and home cooks. I really can relate to your transformation to becoming vegan. I love traditional ways of cooking and want to preserve food history. My daughter married someone a year ago that is vegan, and so we have been doing what we can to learn different ways of cooking when she is with us. I am both a trained pastry chef and have a culinary degree. I am now halfway through medical school (which is another story). I am constantly using the skills that I learned in culinary school every day I am in the kitchen. My husband has always eaten healthy, but recently he has decided to adopt Dr. Gundry's way of eating and also become mostly vegan. It is like a vegan on steroids. There are so many restrictions that I have to work around. (mostly - Dr. Gundry allows some meat and fish, but he also adapts to vegans). This has become very challenging for me and I needed to branch out of my comfort zone. I still have two teenagers at home, and it is a bit of an adjustment for them as well. Food brings us together, and I needed a way to enjoy that food so they did not feel like they were suffering somehow. This is when I purchased your book. I am incredibly impressed with the details and stories. I feel like we are friends. You write so personally and are so willing to be vulnerable to strangers. I am inspired by your willingness to adjust your lifestyle, and your words come at a perfect time when I myself am adjusting so that I can support my husband. I have never written a post before on TH-cam, but I wanted to let you know that you are incredible. Thank you for taking the courage to make great food and to share your culture and experiences with us.

Another great aspect of this video in particular is what you said about the way people poo poo empathy as weak and soft, when it is anything but weak. (9:00) As a recovered disordered eater when I began moving towards a plant based diet (and since my goals are also weight loss as part of health) I was very aware that the very nature of eliminating food groups might trigger me. I'm glad I noticed this because it has helped me keep in check the siren songs of my disorder. I also don't dismiss my family's concerns when they voice them out of hand. I take time to thank them for their love and care and then reflect whether I am being too harsh.
In the end this way of eating is to serve my body (and in larger ways to help the planet). I am not a slave to the diet. I usually plan ahead when eating out with family but if I can't I eat what is available (last week it was pizza and the place had no salads). My family was so kind and asked if I was okay with that. I happily told them I was and the day was about the company. One slice (with mostly vegetables and pineapples anyway) was okay. Some dairy was not going to sabotage me. I didn't even have to finish the cheese.

I knoooooooow it’s hard being vegan when you live with others who aren’t 😞 but you made it seem more possible and really hopeful!! 😊

I really love this advice. A lot of my family doesn’t understand my sons decision to eat mostly plant based foods because he still likes hamburgers and ground beef. I always have to tell them it’s his decision, I’m not going to force him to eat one way or another. He loves fruits and vegetables, so he still eats well. He’s also only 10, so I’m not gonna make him feel bad if he does or doesn’t want to eat meat or cheese. This advice is just what I needed to hear. I also want to say I am so happy for your cookbook. My son is part Korean, so I am trying to teach him about his Korean side of the family by introducing him to Korean food and culture. A lot of the recipes or restaurants have mostly meat. So he was very excited to see your vegan Korean cookbook, cuz now he feels like he can safely eat korean food without having to worry if it has meat in it. So thank you

I will be vegan for 12 years next month! I was vegetarian for a year before I went vegan but couldn’t bare to just leave it at that. My initial reason was for the animals but now it’s for the planet, its people, and my health as well. Like you, I don’t care or judge who is/isn’t vegan. The bulk of climate destruction is from huge corporations polluting the planet but I try to do what I can.

Did you say your prayer, then set out on the trial 2 weeks, or was this trial before what happened with your father which caused the prayer "deal"? I know they must fit in a certain order. Just curious, honestly. 💜 I just made some of the delicious egg rolls last night (your mother's method *is* genius) and I am so glad I made a bunch at once, as shown in that vid. I have lots for my oldest who is an eating machine at the moment. 😁

      I am a semi-vegan cuz I love my pork , poultry & fish ! 🥰
I did curb my love of dairy though. A tremendous addiction for 60 years !!
Hard to give up cheese and yogurt ! Just small portions once a week.
