these stories remind of when i first came to canada. the white and whitewash colored kids made fun of my traditional desi food and commented on the smell to the point it made me uncomfortable. luckily i didn't think too much of it. now i bring my food to the office and have no concern bringing desi finger food. some food is best with hands.

The fact that some people are so ignorant they think the world revolves around them and America because it's "normal" disgusts me. If you don't appreciate what others are doing, your self centered comments are not needed.

The fact that you have the courage to embrace your culture and protect your mom speaks larger and Louder volumes than those who stomp around their "This Is America. You speak English and do what I say" rhetoric ....
America was Never an English speaking White Power nation! It was stolen , beaten, and tortured out from the feet and hard work of others because of manifest destiny...
So go off, ma'am! Reclaim your purest identity! Show off your truest beauty and power!

Ain’t nothing wrong or unsanitary about cooking or eating on the floor. I’m afro-latina and although most meals were prepped and cooked on countertops, we often ate on the floor. We’d have huge family gatherings to the point where there’s be no space to sit at the table and a lot of us just sit on the floor and eat. It’s normal!

I too love all the different cultures in America and have many friends from all over the world. It is sooo educational to learn things from others culture especially the way they prepare food. Give your mom a big hug and let her know I thoroughly enjoyed the making of traditional Kimchi and appreciate the love, sharing and hard work it takes to make, I'm sure the best Kimchi ever. Don't stop, please keep the tradition going, especially in America.💕

Uzhundhu Vada doesn't include potatoes tho. Vada only contains onions, green chillies (as far as I've known and tasted) and it is made out of ulunthu flour (god idk what is the translation of ulunthu in English). But yes, they're definitely similar.

I never left my shoes at the door and felt it a bother to do so until I finally had an aikido class that taught so, and formed friendships with families who follow this rule and now we have that rule in our home, too. I finally got educated! =) it is an odd thing in America how we learn to think "one way is the right way" and it is the "white man's way". I'm hoping this new generation of children who are more connected to the earth and its cultures and are re-connecting to their family traditions, or connecting to someone else's will move us further away from "one right way" and towards toward "ones way" is right. I'm glad to be on the "leave your shoes at the door" point in my life.

Growing up with culture clash within my own home (two cultures, one severely disrespected and disregarded), I can attest to the validity of the American “elitist ideal.” American patriotism has been twisted into a horrible, Nationalistic pride, in this last century. While it does not apply to every American, it is pervasive, even in families that do not notice the more subtle notes of it, in their midst. I feel grateful for having recognized the clash and found a way to embrace both of my cultures, while remaining guarded against the insidious, elitist ideals, of either side.

I went to Korea when I was 11 or 12 (I am 24 now) and I really loved the experience, I spent most of a month on Jeju Island and then a week in Seoul. My mother always thought it was good to introduce my siblings and I to as many different people and different ways of life as possible and I thank her for that now that I am older. I love your content and it brings tears to my eyes to hear this, I have experienced a lot of similar things growing up as 1 of 4 (2 of them being my siblings) black people in my town and the nearby town. You're so right. America at it's origins is about freedom and it's sad that people still today don't deeply connect with that and celebrate each other for their diversity. No matter where someone comes from living in the United States should mean living as you are without fear of judgements.

Greetings from Malaysia. Thank you for sharing your recipe. Discrimination is everywhere in the world. My advise to you is to just ignore those people who try to bring you down. They are not worth your time. Take care.

I love that picture! Seriously those floors GLEAM! I ALWAYS sat on the floor by my Grandma's feet while peeling potatoes, or apples when I was a child. It reminded me of my own family and made me nostalgic! 💚
