  • If you are looking to get into bead fishing for steelhead and don't know where to start this Steelhead fishing tips video is for you. If you wonder how to chose the right color bead for steelhead or what size bead you should be using then this video is for you as well. Steelhead season is upon us so now is the time to start thinking about steelhead fishing and Bead fishing for steelhead is probably the most effective technique out there for great lakes steelhead fishing in the river. The complication of choosing bead size and color is that you have to take into account several factors and even then sometimes just using a color nobody else is using can be the trick to getting bit.
    I used to be so skeptical of beads as a legit bait option. Bead fishing for steelhead seems stupid when you first try but you will find in many cases a steelhead bead will out produce spawn bags and lures! Lots of people I know and respect have sworn by bead. fishing for steelhead and they have these massive selections of steelhead beads and trout beads and salmon beads in every size and color imaginable. In the beginning I was as overwhelmed by bead selection as I am overwhelmed trying to pick a fly when fly fishing. Most of the guys I knew who were good at bead fishing all had different things to tell me about bead fishing for steelhead and most of them were making their own beads. Many fisherman recommended Slay n Steel Beads and Dirks Beads or Great Lakes Steelhead Company beads and with all the sizes colors and variety of materials the whole thing just seemed silly to a spawn bag guy who was new to float fishing anyway. After a few seasons experamenting with beads while steelhead fishing on the river I started learning from other peoples success and replicating it until I had my own success. I have had the pleasure of bead fishing for steelhead with several different steelhead guides over the last few years and they all run different float fishing rigs and use different float rods from spinning rods and baitcasters to centerpins but the one thing they all seem to agree about is that the steelhead bead is the go to bait and it out produces everything else. Why? I still don't know. I have now on multiple occasions used a bead and bag combo to have the fish kip out on a spawn bag to eat a plastic bead. So I assume this means the subtle nature of a plastic or glass steelhead bead is more enticing than a smelly spawn bag.

    Outstanding explanation. I really appreciate the simple answer with the complex answer follow-up. Really leads to understanding. I also like you telling us what you use. I am on the Great Lakes too so I can relate the type of waters.

    Great video thanks for this. I look forward to those more in depth videos! One thing I’m unclear on is advantages/disadvantages around soft vs hard beads?

    • @ReelMichiganAnglers
      @ReelMichiganAnglers  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would say the one advantage to soft beads is if they are gently biting a soft beard is less likely to speak them in a heartbeat, and they are more likely to hang onto it for a second or two longer or in some cases, they even come back for a second third or fourth bite and you might get that hooks it after the barber Bob’s up and down a few times.

      Soft beads are clutch in shallow fast water definitely can run a seam a lot easier than a acrylic bead less trotting involved. Acrylic fairs well in slightly deeper riffs and last but not least glass for deep fast water. All though I found a truck to running soft beads in deep water instead of a glass bead peg use a tiny split shot and pull the soft bead over that to peg it adds the necessary weight to get down in the strike zone faster

    • @ReelMichiganAnglers

      I use blood run skeena hooks or nova tackle octopus hooks in size 6 for small beads up to size 1 for big beads.

    Would bead fishing work in the harbors?

    • @ReelMichiganAnglers
      @ReelMichiganAnglers  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yes beads always work but in spots with less current you might do better with a spawn bag or a jig n wax worm.

    Hi, thanks for the video. Are these beds floating beads or sinking?

    • @ReelMichiganAnglers
      @ReelMichiganAnglers  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Most plastic beads are neutrally buoyant in the water, so you are relying on the weight to get it down and the current to make it move around. Most often the fish are pretty close to the bottom so your goal is to get it down within inches to a foot off the bottom generally speaking. You can also use glass beads when you need it to get down quicker or easier. This is good for deeper or faster water.

    I guess you don't sell beads?

    • @ReelMichiganAnglers
      @ReelMichiganAnglers  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      We offer a selection of glass beads on our website. They are actually pretty cool. I haven’t had a chance to use them a lot myself but I like them in certain situations. Jason also works for bloop making their jigs and knows a lot of the painting secrets so we just don’t compete on that market out of respect for our friends. Besides that, there’s already several really good companies that make really good beads. It really comes down to finding the ones that work best in the conditions you fish most often. For me, I fish the grand river more than anything else and the grand river is a lot dirtier and faster so the beads that work well there Are the same as when I go up north, and clear slower water.

    I know that steelhead like to gorge on salmon eggs while they spawn, but do other species of salmon also feed on their own eggs? I didn’t know you can use beads for kings and coho too

    • @ReelMichiganAnglers
      @ReelMichiganAnglers  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Absolutely! We have done really well for kings on size 14 and 16 beads over the last few years. They work just as good as spawn bags or skein for king salmon. I have also caught a handful of coho salmon and beads as well.
