    Your Pacific NW Steelies definitely eat larger beads than what we usually peg under floats in the Great Lakes region. I haven't caught much above 10mm, and often 6mm or 8mm prevail out in the Great Lakes tribs. Our tribs were running quite clear this October/November from lack of rainfall. 6mm was money while anything larger caught little to no Great Lakes Steelhead. I would say 10mm is the threshold for jumbo-sized beads that work best in dirty water. Best all-purpose size is 8mm because it's a similar size to a natural salmon egg. 6mm does the job best in clear water and most closely resembles the size of a natural Steelhead egg.

    BnR tackle has taken the guess work out of building a good base selection bobber doggin soft bead tackle box. They have a bobber doggin pro pack that has a basic selection of beads between 10 and 14 mm a few floats some swivels and some dave's tangle free weights. There are medium and large beau mac bobber doggin floats. And it has a big sticker on the bottom of the plano box that illustrates how to rig everything up. Basically everything you need besides some fluorocarbon leader and hooks. I think it's 45 bucks. A great way to get in the game.

    Great video, one thing I have trouble with is “matching the hatch”. I understand the concept, but with fly fishing, you can look around and see what type of bugs are around and at what part of the cycle they are in. With eggs, how do I know what part of the spawn cycle the fish are in? For example, a fall chinook or coho may drop their eggs sooner than another. Also once the eggs are dropped they start to mottle or turn that washed out look. Any advice how to go about this? Or is it more of a water color thing as far as choosing colors?

      Hi jeff - its seasonal - when the salmon are running - or coastal cutthroat trout who entire the river to spawn - same for steelhead too - for example A run and B runs are spawning fishing - following your local guides and what they are doing or showing on there websites can help you choose the right time to throw a bead!

    I am having trouble with depth for float fishing. How to read depth of a river to set the float correctly?
    How do you trot a spinning reel so that your terminal is not ahead of your bait your presenting?

    • @sillllverback
      @sillllverback 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Usually snagging bottom every now and then is a good indicator. Adjust yr float high, drift by drift until you snag bottom on every drift. then lower it until you only snag once or twice every few drifts. Also, take a peek at the depth the anglers beside or across from you are fishing.
      when yr float passes you open the bail of the spin-cast. the speed of the drift will determine how fast the line comes off the spool,

    Wouldn't you want a larger hook when float fishing beads? I imagine using a larger hook would help keep your presentation down.

    When bobber dogging beads how do you know you have your gear in the proper strike zone. If your leader is too long are your beads too high off the bottom or does it matter. What about a leader that is too short.

  • @papajay111
    @papajay111 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Why not just put your bead on the excess end of your bait loop knot? It can be naturally hanging just above the hook tip and you get a much more natural presentation AND better hook set AND it helps hide the hook but is much more effective at hooking on the slightest of nibbles.

    • @papajay111
      @papajay111 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All it takes is a little bit of toothpick to secure your bead anywhere along the dangling end of your loop knot,,,,,, PLUS it comes off easily in a snag and you don't break off.

    How can that possibly be necessary to have that many bead options? My experience with steelhead is the few and far between don't care if you have an orange or tangerine colored egg. How in the world can regular dudes expect to bring four hundred different beads for 800 different scenarios and not just dump a bunch of shrimp juice on a corky and call it good???

  • @R1Kyle
    @R1Kyle 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Fishing has become to complicated I think; people start thinking a few mm's of bead size really matters but you need 10 different colors and patterns, plus you need 10 different reels with 10 different weights of line and 10 different types and lengths of rod... You now have made it way to expensive and complicated. Oh but then you want that $60k + fishing boat but that is only one of several because now you also need a drift boat or raft too. Oh crap look at my new $700 Simms chest waders and my $700 simms coat. Sigh, I just wanted to catch fish.
