    Hi, John. Amazing videos. Really appreciate your efforts and the time you put in for new perspective crew members. I am joining Royal Caribbean in a couple of weeks as a Cleaner - Facilities. Could you highlight my chances of growth? and how does the 'department change' work out?
    Also, can you tell me if I can carry my acoustic guitar along? I'd wanna keep it with me in the cabin and play sometimes.

    • @JohnGleasonComedy
      @JohnGleasonComedy  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello! Yes congratulations on the upcoming job! Glad you could enjoy my videos. As for growth in your areas, i am trying to think as far as cleaner facilities goes. I am certain it falls under housekeeping so you may have the different tiers you can work through. Assistant, Managers, etc. It may depend on the break down for RCCL.
      As for the Guitar, i know people who brought theirs with them and were able to keep them in their cabins. As long as you are willing to travel with it and pay for it, you should be all set!

    Hey very greate information, thank you so much. I'm from Chile and I'm apling for a job rigth now. Going to my second interview and with a lot of doubts, questions.
    1) Towels you didn't say if we have to bring one.
    2) How do they pick your roomate?
    3) how is the relaition ship with other members? competitive?
    4) What do you recomend to do to setle in the first couple of week that I bet are the most harsh?
    5)Do they allow drinking in your free time?
    6) You mention a couple of rules that you absolutly can not break. What are they?
    7) How will they punish you if you do?
    As you can see is not the work it worries me. Is how to keep sane the hours that you are not accupied with it. And my final questions are:
    8) How much time in total did you work in a cruise?
    9) What will you say was what you enjoy the most about working in a cruise.
    Again Thank you so much for this videos, you are very cute by do way, and sorry for all the questions. Abrazote desde Chile.

    • @JohnGleasonComedy
      @JohnGleasonComedy  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +aline estefania suarez palma thank you for the list of questions! I will try and answer them as best as i can!
      1- No need to bring towels. THey are stocked and replenished daily by your housekeeper (Depending on your job)
      2-Usually someone within your department or at least the same schedule as you. They will not put a casino person with a morning person.
      3-Not competitive at all! Its very team oriented. Although me coming in as an American it was tougher as most crew members only experience with the Americans are as guests, so they believe them all to be obnoxious.
      4- The first couple of weeks, make as many friends and learn as much as possible. It will get better over time....but everyone is different.
      5-You may drink in the evening. Although you are not allowed to ever be drunk as they can randomly test you and you would be fired. You need to be able to act in the event of an emergency. You will get pretty good at hiding your drunk level at some point. Just do not get sloppy.
      6-There are a few rules that are instant fire. I will be doing another video shortly, but they involve drinking, fighting, Drugs and messing around with guests sexually.
      7-You get fired.
      8-On a single cruise? Or a contract? I would typically work 70-80 hours a week. A minimum of 10 hours a day....some days 14
      9-the thing i enjoyed the most was the memories, experience, people i met and just the opportunity. Its tough, but its got a great pay off.

    Hi John. Just stumbled across your channel and find your videos quite interesting. I am wayyy to old to be a worker on a ship but I do love to cruise but sadly have only done it once due to Covid19. I have a question regarding my room steward...would it be ok to bring them goodies such as toothpaste, laundry soap etc. to leave after we disembark? This would be on top of our gratuities of course. I thought a gift bag of goodies would be nice but certainly don't want to insult anyone. Hope that makes sense. Have a glorious day.

    • @JohnGleasonComedy
      @JohnGleasonComedy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is a fantastic question! While it would be super nice to bring goodies, I would probably shy away from specifics. Money would be better as they may have specific brands they prefer or can use. I know me personally with toothpaste I only use a specific type and would not use any others. Just to play it safe, I would probably not do something like that unless you know 100% for sure...just to make sure nothing is wasted! I hope this helps!
      Plus the extra tip will allow them to purchase those supplies while in port. There are plenty of ports that have great shopping for crew member supplies!

    Hi John! Thank you for the video! Very helpful :) Questions: Where is your suitcase stored during your time on board? What form of carry on did you usually bring (I'm thinking of bringing a bookbag)? And finally (this is kind of a dumb question) are there shelves or places to store bathroom amenities (shampoo, conditioner, etc) in the shower? Thank you!!!

    • @JohnGleasonComedy
      @JohnGleasonComedy  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Kelly Speagle Not weird questions at all. My bags were stored under my bed. I had 2 big bags that doubled as Ski Bags so they were flexible and fit inside each other. Think more along the lines of Heavy duty camping or skiing bags. Any square shaped traditional suitcases will be hard to store while onboard. As for carry on, most airlines give you one carry on and one personal item. I brought my backpack (carry on) and my messenger bag (Laptop/personal item) and i was set for all the electronic and book needs. As for storage in the bathroom ,the mirror will have 2 sides. One for you and one for your room mate. Each side has some shelves to put things on.

    Smashing video John! How is the married life like on a ship with co-works who are married? If me and my wife were to work on the same ship how does that work?

    • @JohnGleasonComedy
      @JohnGleasonComedy  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Nigel Thornberry if you are married you have priority to get a cabin together. Not to say you may have to wait a little while to open up...but being married gets you one faster than the people who are just dating. Then you would work your normal jobs like on land and go from there.

      You will have some down time....what you do with it is up to you. If you choose to use it to work out, you can. Some positions have access to the guest gym, but if not then you have a crew gym to go to.

    Its all pretty useful info, until it comes to getting a job on the bridge. Hopefully (and usually) your Uni will help you with finding a company to work for to get your certificate, because if you plan on getting hired as a 1st officer you need to have at-sea experience. So you will basically be on the bridge as a type of "Assistant" 1st Officer.

    • @JohnGleasonComedy
      @JohnGleasonComedy  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. Getting to the bridge, a lot of the officers up there have worked on other ships and ferries and the like before working on a large commercial cruise line. A few of the captains I know have worked as Ferry boat captains in Italy before obtaining their job as a Cruise ship captian.

    • @JohnGleasonComedy
      @JohnGleasonComedy  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      you should be able to bring those types of medications. As for the power outlets, depending on the location of the company, they will determine what kind of outlets are on board. A majority of them have standard US outlets, at least where I experienced....but you can always get a converter.

    What are some entry level positions I could look into?
    The only work experience I have is 3 years of unloading trucks and stocking shelves for Walmart.
    I have a great work ethic and a lot of patience when it comes to customers, but the management is always swapping around and it seems like each new batch is more entitled and disconnected than the last. I'm foaming at the mouth for the opportunity to drop it all, and try something new. But the only listings I can spot require prior experience.

    • @JohnGleasonComedy
      @JohnGleasonComedy  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hmm. i would say to look into something a long the lines of maybe the store room or store keepers? That has some similar skills from what you are currently doing now. Management on the ships is sometimes not any better than what you are explaining now, but you will run into that in a lot of places. Or if there is anything different you want to get into, Food and beverage, Housekeeping....stuff like that have entry level jobs.

    Is there an age requirement on most cruise lines? After a preliminary look at some websites it doesn't seem there's anything officially listed, but what would the chances of an 18 year old with a few years of customer service experience getting hired be?
    Also, is speaking many languages (English, Portuguese, French, Mandarin) a selling point and which position would make best use of that?

    Hi, thank you for your videos. I didnt get the point with the alarm clock, cells phones dont depend of electricity continuously (for as long as there's battery) and if power is cut out for a second that can hardly interfere with charging the phone in the mean time.
    Also wanted to ask you, did you work in the entertainment dept? I will be applying to Royal Caribbean for this dept, and Im a kindergarten teacher. Do you know by any chance do employees have to come up with ideas to entertain or are they provided before hand with some kind of a schedule, and/or a to do list. I depend on internet for ideas (pinterest, google...) and ship internet connections are horrible, so am worried about this one a little.

    • @JohnGleasonComedy
      @JohnGleasonComedy  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Now a days it is probably a lot more reliable. What I meant is if you use an electric alarm clock on top of your phone. Sometimes the Airplane modes and time zones interfere with the clock on your phone and then the electric alarm clock if the power surges the time can be off, or go back to the blinking 12:00. I have had a couple of times where out in the ocean my phone would randomly connect to some crazy different time and i needed to figure the difference to ensure my alarms went off. It was never a guaranteed thing, I always had at least 2 different clocks set as there have been multiple instances with several employees where they didnt work or the times changed. As for activities, there will be some already in motion but as a member of the entertainment staff you will be required to come up with some of your own or to adjust on the fly. I would prepare a bunch of activities and bring them with you as the internet is dodgy and not the most reliable and you don't want to spend time looking stuff up. It will be more appealing to have it all in your arsenal already! That will put you above and beyond and help the guests enjoy their vacation.

    Hi There
    On MSC Cruises web site I came across the job posting (video operator) that attracted my intention
    but they require STCW95 certificate (Basic fire fighting, personal survival techniques, elementary first aid, personal
    security and social responsibility) for video operator position. Some other positions are exempt.
    Do the cruise companies you worked for offer training and certification onboard after one is hired, or one needs to get
    it on land before getting onboard ??? I am from Canada and this STCW95 certificate is too costy ($2500 CAD)
    It seems to me you are from US. Where and how did you get STCW95 certificate ??? Any tips , suggestions ???
    Thanks in advance for your time

    • @JohnGleasonComedy
      @JohnGleasonComedy  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The ones i worked for did not require that ahead of time. They provided it to anyone on board as part of your welcome training. I am sure with MSC being a smaller cruise line, they do not have the ability to train people while on board.

      The AC is not too bad. Your first few weeks you may get adjusted to being in the air for a long time. you may get a little cold. As for smells coming out of the bathroom, its not common but sometimes and i mean sometimes there may be an odor.

    • @drexrae

      In my experience all crew cabins have exhaust vents both bathroom and the cabin. If you get to work on a new ship then the AC and exhaust are good but if it's old then it's the opposite.

    hey John love your videos bro. just a quick question hope its not confusing..who hires you?is an agent for that cruise ship in your foreign country or do you get hired directly on the ship on the point of arrival?

    • @JohnGleasonComedy
      @JohnGleasonComedy  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You get hired from the cruise line its self from their head office. At least for me, other countries may have agencies they need to go through. I was hired from a supervisor in the head office of carnival and from there they let you know which particular ship you will be on for your contract. They can also move you around as needed during your contract so you are not exactly tied down to any particular ships.

    • @JohnGleasonComedy
      @JohnGleasonComedy  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most of that is provided. Linen and towels are all provided as well as towels. Some crew members are required to do their own laundry and cabin cleaning.

      @TravelWithCesarin 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I heard that you can actually arrange to get your room clean right? as for cleaning. Do they provide a vacuum ? Also pardon the question, the next one is going to be tricky because I get conflicting answers depending on who I ask.
      Some say that some cruise lines do accept certain employees with disabilities, others that its a flat no. What do you think? (in my example, I'm partially deaf, I have an implant that allows me to hear to a decent level)

    • @dreadmode101
      @dreadmode101 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depents on what kind of Person you are.
      Due to the fact, that you will have axcess to Food and Water in the Crewmess, you might need some money for Cigarettes, Beer, Water you can take to your Cabin and what every you need additionally.
      Usually Crewbar is not expensive. And depending on where you work you will get Tips.
      I am a Person which is not really drinking. So I can survive the first month with about 50 Euro.

    • @JohnGleasonComedy
      @JohnGleasonComedy  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Pretty spot on Dreadmode101
      as he said, yeah you would make your base pay and then not have to pay for food and room/board...its the extra stuff.
      Me, i would buy my bathroom supplies when in port as well as some snacks. Free food is nice, but you get tired of it really quick, but if your really but on saving money then you can get passed that.
      I would also buy movies in port and go out to eat in port...just to get that normal food every once in a while. Like Lunch or Breakfast. We once had a schedule in 1 port where we were able to get lunch and dinner...that was nice. but yeah after all that and if you enjoy going to the crew bar, you may finish the month with a little bit of extra cash.

    great videos! I'm from Australia, and I was thinking about applying for a job on a cruise ship for my gap year (id be 18). I assume most people would be older but do you think its possible to get a job at this age? I don't have any qualifications as ive obviously been ay school, but I have had some experience in waitressing and I also speak a fair bit of Spanish. do you think these things would be helpful? thanks! :)

      They may not hire you until you are 21. Most cruise lines wait until that age so that there is a level of maturity and some sort of previous life experience. So you are better off working on some experience and building up your resume and then apply once you turn 21.

      Hi there I am also in the very same boat. In fact I suspect I was scammed after watching your Videos. Are you familiar with Blue sea Cruises USA? Have you also heard of paying a fee of 550USD to the agency? Your videos are very helpful thanks.

    • @JohnGleasonComedy
      @JohnGleasonComedy  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello to the both of you. This is interesting, for Steven did you apply through a company that may send security members to the ships instead of working directly through the cruise line? First contract will be a lot of training and just adjusting. It will be a whole wave of information not only on the job itself but the cruise line culture and hospitality training. Even though you are there as security you will still be required to promote the core values of the company that you are working for and ensuring the guests have a wonderful time.
      As for you Nqobile, I will see if can look anything up about Blue Sea Cruises. I found a website with a list of all things that should be a red flag. Take a look at it and see if any names or emails sound familiar to who you are talking with. I would also recommend doing a bit of digging to see if maybe the 550$ is a requirement for submitting your information through an agency.
      www.cruiseshipjobs.com/blacklist.htm
      Check that link out and i hope it helps.

    • @JohnGleasonComedy
      @JohnGleasonComedy  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      alright excellent. So the company may have a contract with several cruise lines and they will send you whichever one has an opening. Your first contract will rely on a lot of training, getting used to the lifestyle of working on a ship and pretty much just learning the job. Just be very open minded and ask as many questions as you can.

      It will depend on the airlines, but if you have seafarers or if you are going into the Army,Navy, Marines Etc. They allow for a little heavier packing. For me flying out of the states, some airlines are 60, some are 50....some charge you regardless. Not so much fun. I have gotten luck when my bag was a few pounds over, the lady at the desk waived the fee cause I was working on a ship. You never know.

      Hello Deborah! Thanks for watching and asking. Do you know what cruise lines you were looking at jobs? Even if they are out of a different country, the main home base of the cruise line would require you to have a work visa. This is mainly because you are not guaranteed to be on the same ship for your whole contract and they may move you around where they see fit.

    hey...do you or any of your colleagues have an answer o my question here? I have an interview coming up for junior assistant cruise director on Princess Cruise lines, I am a female that prefers not to wear dresses...do you think that will be a problem?

    • @JohnGleasonComedy
      @JohnGleasonComedy  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Loufwe I dont think it will be a problem. There are girls who would wear dress pants and a nice shirt instead of a dress. On the elegant/formal nights you would probably have to wear a suit instead. Although with Princess, they had a uniform for their staff and guys and girls wore like a suit jacket and pants or a skirt, but not a short skirt, like a uniform skirt. I am sure they would allow you to wear the pants version if you wanted.
