Years ago I was helping care for a friend who had HIV/AIDS. This was before the current treatment protocols were available, so an AIDS diagnosis was pretty much a death sentence. He was having terrible problems with nausea and wasn't able to keep any food or medications down. One evening he was in particularly bad shape, with constant dry-heaves. It was very painful for him. We went to the ER to see if they could help him out, and they gave him a medication rectally. I don't know exactly what medication was used, but the dry-heaves stopped almost immediately, and within a half hour he was able to drink water. It was SUCH a relief! He lived another 18 months, and he never had pain as bad as he had that night.
I was once sat in the ER waiting to see the doc and a poor young man was wheeled into trauma unconscious and was diagnosed with burst appendix… the old nurse came along and yelled to the doctor is this tylenol going in his rectum… and that’s when I knew that medications could be absorbed fast through the butt! Amazing
Not just hospice. Paediatrics is a great place for PR medication. Many a time I’ve had a tiny vomiting and spiking a massive fever. Not able to tolerate fluids etc. PR paracetamol was like a miracle cure
As a health scientist, I can totally vouch for what you're saying. If I had severe nausea & vomiting, that would be my go to request. However, you're right to be cautious about giving extended release that way, it could actually be quite dangerous. It effectively carries a serious risk of overdose.
Thank you julie! I live with chronic pain, & several years ago, my Dr gave me pain meds this way. I had forgotten about this, probably bc they tried many different things on me. Nothing helps! I will definitely bring this up with 3 of my Drs next visit. Thank you! 🤗
You’re the best, I’ve been a Pharm Tech for many years working side by side with hospice.I wish everyone would go this route.it’s easier with the and the care worker. Thank you Julie😊
I'd do it! When i was 14, I had chemo once a week for a few months (Vin Christin), the nausea and vomiting started about an hour after the treatment, right about how long it took on the ride home. then it was just miserable for 4 days when I could slowly start eating saltines, slices of cheese, apple, etc. By about day 6 I could eat okay...Just in time to start all over again! I don't recall there were any meds I knew of at the time for nausea / vomiting, but if there were, I would've taken them by any means necessary! 😂
Oh that’s horrible what you had to go thru. I agree I would have taken any med in anyway if that occurred. I’ve had stomach flus and morning sickness that I wished there were meds to help.
@ thank u Julie - I was blessed with the most incredible family- and now at 40 yrs old and my parents mid 70’s I’m getting more and more afraid of what’s going to happen to them as I get older watching them get older. I know I will never put them in a home and will be coming to you a whole lot more than I already do. Thank you for your braveness and for your heart, your service to people and just all around, I thank u from the bottom of my heart and I love you girl 💕 love from south Jersey and a big giant hug
About 15yrs ago now I was homeless in the middle of November it was cold in Vegas dont believe the desert doesn't get cold lol anyway. I was put in the hospital for pneumonia I was so sick I went right to ICU isolation in ICU I was told that if I had laid down and went to sleep 😴 I would not of woke up! That my lungs were so full of fluid they were not sure if I had pneumonia or tuberculosis I was given meds this way and would choose to if I were sick again one second of being uncomfortable 😣 and like you said boom 🪄 in minutes you feel it working!! Thank God And the Drs At North Vista in Las Vegas Nevada for saving my life! ❤ I love you btw thank you for sharing your stories I appreciate you very much 🙏🏻
I would do that. I was extremely constipated after surgery so the nurse offered like milk of magnesia, an enema or a suppository. I asked which she would do and she said the suppository. So I’ve had one. It worked and wasn’t awful.
Oh, I can vouch for rectal medication. I was prescribed pain medication after having a massive dermoid cyst removed from an ovary, and it worked perfectly. Doc said oral meds would make me nauseous.
I've witnessed the effects of meds through the rectum and how amazingly fast and almost more efficient than orally. If I needed it, I would no doubt be very willing to have meds rectally.
Agreed. I have used many supps in my career. I wish we could get more meds this way. My fav pharmacies are the holistic pharmacies that compound their meds. Good call making a video about the revtum! Love your content!
Hi Julie! I have issues swallowing meds by mouth so I always tell the doctor the smallest size med or through the IV, so yes,I definitely would take meds through the rectum!
The hospice nurse that decided to admit my Mom to the Hospice Hospital her in Dallas used rectal administration for my Mom’s fever and it really helped lower her fever. She showed Mom’s caregivers that night how to do it. Both have messaged me that they have used it since with other people they are taking care of. We are so thankful she showed how to do it.
Ritchie??? Do share this Ritchie with us please! If you love him... WE LOVE HIM TOO! This video was very eye opening and I am going to share this with my terminal cousin's wife. People need to think outside the box.
Folks should be aware that some drug dosages may need to be adjusted when the medication is administered rectally. While portions of the rectum enter the portal circulatory system and are subject to the hepatic first-pass effect, a significant portion of the rectal blood flow enters directly into the systemic circulatory system which can result in increased serum levels of the drug. Check with your physician or pharmacist before trying to administer an oral medication via the rectal route, particularly with opioids or benzos. You can certainly get more ‘bang for your buck’ administering meds rectally but there is also a risk for overdose if the dosage is not properly titrated for the alternative route.
When my dad was actively dying and was getting very combative, the hospice nurse administered Valium from the comfort pack rectally and he immediately got relief which helped him to rest peacefully until he passed a few hours later.
Thank you so much for this information,I had no idea. I’ve lost so many friends and family from cancer and it’s so hard for the patient to even swallow a bit of water, specially stomach cancer. Got a relative right now who just got diagnosed with liver and stomach cancer,so this information will come in handy if no doctors use that technique. As always ❤❤
So if the medication is in pill form I.e oxycodone , ibuprofen, lorazepam should they be crushed and mixed with water and inserted with syringe or can the pill be inserted whole in the form it comes out of the bottle ? Thanks for all your videos, my mom is currently in active dying stage 😢
I would want a choice. For some reason, in a hospital you lose all autonomy, especially being part of the decision making process. Everything is, "It's time for your enema, or your catheter. . ." No explanation. In a perfect world someone would explain why, but my experience is you can't say yes or no or why." It's just time for. . .
Would you consider leaving a rectal stump in just in case it's needed later. Colon was already removed for colonic inertia and considering rectal stump removal cause mucous plug has to be disimpacted surgically
Does this have to be used by hospice patients only? I had over half my bowel removed and pills go right through me. Gave me nasty drinks with the meds it probably goes right through me to as I pass more liquid than bm. Could suppositories help me?
Queen.... Lets try everything in the rectum....... made me spit out my tea!!! In Spain they are very open about rectal medication. It absolutely works, so yep I´d be more than happy to do Botty medicine :) It also makes a difference how far up you put the medicine, depending on what medicine. Thank you for talking about the difficult subjects, Julie x💚
I know when i was ypunger, not sure what was wrong, sore throat, for some reason my mom took me to another dr in town i grew up. He was Asian, he gave me a shot in my butt, not fond of that, but boy whatever i had it did work quickly. May have been a teen, but i know ur talking rectum but wanted to share that. My mom use a supository on a rare occ on us, no idea why. Never used on my sons. Last 1 i had was before the colonoscopy. Mean nurse, not like sweet Julie

Absolutely if the patient is for it! I’ve had rectal meds and it’s amazing.

In a hospice RN... gave meds this route when nothing else working 👍🏻
We gave medicine for seizures rectally all the time for our daughter throughout her life. Worked so much faster and so very effective!
Absolutely I'd be willing !
Thank you as always totally agree we always do this with our residents in the nursing home, it’s really affected. 😊
This is a great educational service. Thank you.
Julie, you are not "acting" like a hero. You are a Hero!
Yes, especially for the little ones. ❤
I did this for my late husband. Yep, it works very well!

Yes, I would.

I have seen in ancient holistic Ayurveda practice “basti” used frequently for all the reasons you stated. And it works!
I have taken anti nausea by rectum and worked amazingly fast. ❤

Absolutely! I agree! I know this may sound opposite but I feel it’s less invasive than going at the mouth and face, also painless ❤
Yes yes yes

In much of Europe medicines are given rectally on a regular basis. I too have used anti inflammatory medicines this way.
I absolutely would do this and I will absolutely share this Julie!!!

Of course I would! In fact my daughter, maybe about 10 yo, could not stop vomiting, a PA prescribed med via victim and it workex!
Our hospice started the process to be available. Thanks for your input and teaching. 😊

Hey Julie ❤
Hi!
Absolutely 💯
Makes perfect sense .

I did not even get a notice.
I have gastroparesis. How would it be administered? Not, pills, right?
Would those other services have greater billable amounts and why they wanted to pursue them before what you suggested.
Not sure? I don't think it would mattern
Would you consider leaving a rectal stump in just in case it's needed later. Colon was already removed for colonic inertia and considering rectal stump removal cause mucous plug has to be disimpacted surgically
Why not?
I would do it.

No- anyone could do- Always ask your doctor though. If they resist- ask them to explain EXACTLY why you couldn't try it
💯 yes
I have known that since I was 7YO.

🥰🥰🥰🥳🥳🥳
Can you give the liquid syringe rectally, with an order of course, or do you have to get, say Morphine, in suppository form?
No- liquid (in small syringe) rectally- with order- of course
@hospicenursejulie thank you so much! I once had a doctor order Ativan tablets rectally for seizure.
yes even for recreation thats all im sayin

yes us it
Why just not IV Zofran or Phenergan ?
Because in hospice- people are in their homes and we don't have IV access or typically use IV's.
💛💛💛💛
Lol i used to put vicodin in there when i was using drgs bad.
Yeah us addicts call this "boofing"... Got a far greater rush and high compared to taking drugs orally or snorting
Hi! Fellow addict here 🥰
My rear is exit only! Lol

Seriously...Do the rectal catheters come in different sizes? Some people have bigger butt holes than others.
Interesting. Not to sound ….but this brings about more concerns with the act of homosexuality.
I wish more meds could be given in the rectum. My son is 4 and has never ever taken Mads orally. The only way he will take meds is via the rectum.
This is how gays get off. "Now take you meds boys" 🤣🤣.
I remember when they used to take your temperature that way lol
Rude. What an idiot
How do you prevent the patient from expelling the medication from the rectum? Same with the Foley catheter
@@denisevaldivia3143
The medication is inserted deep into the rectum.
I find it hard to believe that you think only "gay guys" use their butt to "get off". This is closed minded and immature.
Thank you for educating me,never heard you can put medication through the rectum and I’m 63 years old ❤❤
