    I love the way Dr. Robert Lustig put it (paraphrase): "When nature packages sugar, it always packages it with the antidote - fiber." We are the only creatures in the world, in our total lack of wisdom, that decides to minimize or completely discard the antidote and maximize the thing that will slowly poison us - sugar.

    • @Hertz2laugh
      @Hertz2laugh 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +19

      Fiber is not an antidote, it is a plug.
      Fiber literally covers your intestines so that they can't absorb nutrients very well.
      That isn't a good thing.
      Yeah, it blocks some of the sugar absorption buy it also blocks everything else including vitamins and minerals.
      It's the most ridiculous take to say that fiber is an antidote for anything.
      Fiber does harm to humans by reducing their ability to absorb nutrients from the food they eat.
      It's like saying that sealing a plastic bag over your head is an antidote for air pollution...

      @alphacause 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      @@Hertz2laugh You are correct, that fiber does act like an antinutrient. I personally don't subscribe to the notion that we need fiber. However, in a nation hellbent on maintaining a sugar addiction, if they are going to consume copious amounts of sugar, at least fiber acts as a prophylactic.

      @@simongarner5340 Bear in mind that there are only about 4 grams of glucose normally circulating in the bloodstream and compare that to how much sugar is consumed in a meal. Protein and yes even fat will also break down into glucose if it is required. The more you cut down on sugars and junk food the more your body will thank you, especially the older you get.

      Fiber is really good for humans in moderation, it is anti colon cancer plus fiber helps digestion better. Taking sugar and fiber together is a good solution.

    Hi Jessie and thank you. I love orange juice but have been cautious of the sugar pile dissolved within it for some time. I drink one cup of coffee with sugar, once a day, well after my savory breakfast. Then I only drink water, regular and sparkling. A few times a week I will mix the sparkling with fresh lemon and some orange juice. Then in the afternoon switch to just water again. Get my little fix, highly diluted, well before bedtime. No spikes. Happy mitochondria. ❤️

    Hello, I thought that the sucrose in cola is a table sugar, this is a disaccharide made up of one molecule each of glucose and fructose bound together. In contrast, oranges contain more fructose, which is absorbed by the enterocytes and metabolised independently of insulin. It reaches the liver via the portal vein, where it is broken down via fructose-1-phosphate and glyceraldehyde to glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate and dihydroxyacetone phosphate. Excesses are stored in the liver and muscles in the form of glycogen, which can be converted back into glucose when needed. Only when the glycogen stores are full is the excess glucose converted into fat and stored in the fat cells. No insulin is required to break down fructose, which means that blood sugar levels are barely affected. Fructose is metabolised independently of insulin and has a low glycemic index (GI) of just 22, and therefore barely affects blood sugar levels. (The GI of glucose, on the other hand, is 100.) Then the question arises: why is the glycemia peak so high? Do manufacturers add extra sugar to orange juice?

      @TheSpecialJ11 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The funny thing about that fact is fructose is actually *more* harmful to your body than the glucose in sugar. Your liver can only metabolize so much fructose (very little, as fructose was rare for evolving humans), and any excess is deposited as fat in your liver or neighboring organs, organ fat being the most harmful, worse than visceral fat. With many modern people already having compromised liver health, fructose is an added stressor the liver cannot cope with easily. Best to only eat whole fruit, and to only eat it in moderation, particularly around exercise.

Once I removed the sugary drinks and started eating fruit, drinking real fruit juice, my headaches vanished, i felt hydrated. I hear so many experts saying this food is "good", this food is "bad". Before believing them, I test whatever they say to confirm whether or not what they say is true. I have no issue with real fruit juice, but I understand other people might. Jessica's comments on fruit juices and fruit growing are really good. First, most of the fruit juices are real sugar bombs, and secondly, nowadays fruit (and also vegetable growing) hast nothing to do with natural conditions. They must be big, in perfect shape, seedless, as sweet as possible, long enduring, spotless and so on. That's kind of sick, particularly, when you have once been to the tropics and have seen fruits or vegetables in a natural environment. They may often appear not so perfect as you may expect, but in many cases they are much more tasty than the ones cultivated in huge farms. By the way, I like Jessica's presentations very much, also due to her fantastic appearance. Heinz, 64, MD, GER

      Eggs is a big one. I found the pdf she talked about and it has two recipes. One for an omelette with tomatoes and feta cheese and the other a chia bowl with unsweetened stuff in it. I can’t remember too much about the bowl.
      Eggs are always a good option for a savory breakfast. If you like baking I saw a gf breakfast recipe that I’m going to implement for myself. Let me know if you’re interested I’ll send you the short.

      Fructose does cause spike. I get spikes from the fruit same way as from any other sugar. Like she said if is not juiced, might be that spike will escalate slower.

    I truly love learning this 🤯 mind blowing information. If you add vegetables to the juice, does it make it better? Is it contraindicated? If you don’t mind unsolicited advise, I suggest making your videos more upbeat, faster, more dynamic. It would help! Thank you for the info!

      I think the same principle applies when juicing vegetables, it is denatured, you are taking out the fibre.
      The fibre helps slow down the impact of a blood sugar spike. You’re better off not juicing at all. Furthermore, adding juiced vegetables will not drop the sugar content, 22g of sugar in a glass of orange juice topped up with juiced vegetables is still 22g of sugar.
      In fact, it is possibly more when the sugar in the juiced vegetable is factored in.

    Loved this episode.
    I have been following some of her instructions like starting my meal with veggies, occasionally I drink vinegar before the meal and combining sugar-dense desserts with protein source like walnuts. I lost 5kg in a month :) and I do not feel hungry at all.
    The only side effect I have been experiencing is lethargy. I want to sleep for 10-11h, I get tired easily and basically want to go to bed all the time except morning hours.
    I believe this is the adaptation of my brain to low blood sugar levels. Just curious, is this diet eventually ketogenic? and since my sugar intake is lower but still not as low as in ketogenic diets, will my body and brain finally find their way to metabolism that will boost my energy, not the other way around?
    Happy to receive scientific articles regarding what happens in such scenarios :)

    To put it more succinctly, juice is highly processed fruit, and one of the principal features of highly processed foods is the absence of fiber. As Robert Lustig. says." feed your gut (that's the fiber) and protect the liver(avoiding fructose, which is glucose's evil twin, and which, in excess. results in fatty liver and thus insulin resistance")"

    As a nutrition scientist, I can say that she is not wrong. But also not completely right. Most dietetic institutions recommend 5 portions of fruit and vegetables. However, when asked whether these portions can be balanced out with juices, most say no. Which is right, imo. Juice has the many disadvantages mentioned above: High sugar content, low fibre. However, fruit in general often offers vitamin combinations that vegetables do not. It is therefore probably most beneficial to use them together in a diet. But the idea of eating only juice or fruit would also be problematic for humans for another reason: the constant consumption of acid would attack the teeth relatively quickly. Fruit is therefore not quite as bad as the video suggests. It just has a few things to consider.

    • @skyworm8006

      'Most dietetic institutions recommend 5 portions of fruit and vegetables'
      They pull this stuff out of nowhere and can widely differ. Who cares about blind recommendations based ultimately on nothing, or worse industry and ideology, over actually understanding the body and food? The whole idea of it is fallacious and does more harm than good. They are more concerned with promoting their own authority than nutrition.
      If Vitamins were your concern, you wouldn't bother mentioning fruit or veg in general. It's actually ad hoc justification to hold up baseless beliefs.

    You've mentioned before that modern fruits are not as natural as we might think and are primarily made up of water, sugar, and fiber. I consume fruits because I believe they're a good source of natural vitamins. Is this not true? Should we be turning to supplements for our vitamins instead?

      Continue your consume your fruits, especially by eating it! Table sugar and fruit sugar is metabolised differently and fruit sugar doesn’t spike your blood sugar levels up like table sugar does. I’m so confused about the CGM chart she showed unless it’s orange juice with ADDED sugar

    Okay orange juice from packed juice. Have you ever known that there is a juice that homemade that called cold pressed juice. There is a machine for making it. I guess u already know it, yes it’s separating the pulp and the juice (extraction). And we can mix it with other ingredients and combinations between fruits and vegs.. so what do you think about that? Still causing glucose spike?

      Orange juice is full of fructose and hence too much sugar as most people don’t eat the whole fruit with the fibre and need many at once to make a glass of juice…

    I'm from Eastern Europe. And during my childhood, we never drank any type of fruit juice or cereal in the morning. Our breakfast consisted of things like eggs, cheese, toast, butter. We did have jams sometimes, but mostly it was very basic simple sandwiches.
    Toast with cheese and kolbasa (it's similar to sandwich meat) (sugar cube in tea)
    Toast with butter and jam with hot tea (no sugar in tea)
    Tea was the only drink for us during school time too, or if it was any type of juice, it was pear or cherry juice made that same morning in the school cafeteria. Many of your habits form when you're a child. So, unless you make an effort to start early with your children, they will eat bad food all their life.
