- I can't call this progress since we did less than even basic maintenance, BUT our house is getting there and once we move in we'll be able to start fixing things up! We'd also love advice about tiling our upcoming raised concrete patio. I'm pretty sure we can do it ourselves. Bonus yard news--one of our trees started growing some surprise fruits and they turned out to be oranges!! So exciting!
Thank you so much to Soundcore for sponsoring our video! We absolutely love their headphones. We use at least one of their products every single day. The noise-cancelling earbuds are probably the third most impactful thing that improved my life this year (after our new house and anti-depressants, lmao). I can't imagine going to the grocery store without them anymore. The downside is I have to wave my arms around literally any time I want to talk to Jun anymore.

Ahhhh our house is becoming a house!!
If anyone has advice on tiling a raised concrete patio, pls give. Neither of us have done it before but I'm pretty sure we can handle it. Is the middle of winter an okay time to do outdoor tiling or is that a bad idea, haha
As a kid, my dad made a brick patio on top of a concrete base! Of course as a kid, I don't remember a lot of the process, but if you're able, you can write in the edge of the concrete your names or the year your house is built, something significant like that!
I remember that when my mom and I tiled the floor we were very careful about making sure the lines were square. We used this bit of string that was impregnated with chalk and snapped it onto the floor to make a line. We also were mindful about spacing the tiles so that the grout had enough space to get in and be strong.
you can try watching Charles Dowding's videos in youtube. he does gardening videos!
Make sure your flow lines are correct! You wouldn’t want water going towards your house, so be sure to slope it away enough that the water actually runs away from the house. Pack the base with sand over dirt for better drainage, and have a few inches of it instead of just a sprinkle. Use a compactor a few times if you can, if not, run water over it to compact it naturally. The concrete should be at least 4 inches(idk cm, something like 10cm?) if you’re going to put something heavy on it and also so that it can survive the winter/spring freeze thaw cycle
We're not doing the concrete part--we're hiring a landscaper for that, and we've discussed the slope and whatnot with them in detail! We'll just do the tiling on top of it (eventually).

The fact that you have frogs there shows it's has a fairly healthy ecosystem. A lot of places with high pollution are not compatible with frogs because their skin often absorbs the pollutants and kills them off.
Ahh yay!! That's great to hear! We have a ton of geckos, too. Honestly there's just a lot of everything in this yard, haha. It's very full of life and I LOVE it.
@@RachelandJunAdventures you guys might want to look into one of those co2 producing mosquito vac machines for your yard :) they can cost a bit at first but given home much you plan to be outside it might be a good idea. Advice on tile-
Tile is very rigid so it's prone to cracking over time when the concrete settles or the foundation shifts due to earthquakes (may be different in Japan versus US). It would be good finding a smaller tile and have about 8mm spacing between the tile. That way, it allows for a lot more expanding. For material, look for ones rated for outside with a high COF (coefficient of friction). This is the slipperiness of the surface. Porcelain is much more UV resistant but that's compared to other countertops. I don't know anything about using tile outside but that's my 2 cents from having laid tile in my own house and having to replace some from releveling a floor... and a very cracked sidewalk.
Agreed!
I can't agree nor disagree with this statement, but I see this as important to push to the top so Jun and rachel can see this comment !
My thoughts, exactly. Also, freezing and thawing repeatedly can have an effect.
I've broken my finger on slippery outside tile when it rained. XD So can confirm about making sure about the whole slipperiness thing.
And the tile has to be for outdoor. There is a difference.
Poki's expression when the sunglasses are on his head is killing me 😂😂😂

Nice
Hey
I just go my bachelors degree in architecture and here are some things to keep in mind:
(English is not my first language though.. so I apologize if I'm using the wrong words)
- probably the most important thing is that you make sure there is some kind of drainage system, so that the water doesn't slowly seep through the concrete. Concrete has pores and it can get damaged by water over time. Especially if temperatures drop below 0 degrees celsius. If the water in the concrete starts to freeze, the concrete is going to crack.
You should ask for the concrete patio to have a gradient of about 2-3%, so that it's slightly higher at the house and slightly lower at the garden. You don't want any rain water collecting on your patio. It could damage the patio itself as well as your house over time.
- both concrete and tiles are very hard materials- ideally you would want something soft in between these two layers. That way the sound of walking on the tile is reduced and the weight impact on the tile itself as well, which makes it less likely for the tile to break.
You could, for example put a drainage mat in between the tile and the concrete.
This is how I would layer it:
1. waterproof sealing for the concrete (it can either be painted on or it can be a sheet of bitumen.. it's kinda like a big sheet of plastic)
2. one layer of mortar
3. the drainage mat (it's like a rubbery mat with holes)
4. another layer of mortar
5. and then the tiles on top
I'm a native English speaker with a degree in English literature & I've taught ESL: & your English is EXCELLENT! 👏

@@h.calvert3165 Oh wow.. thank you :D
That actually means a lot to me. I was always really bad in English classes & had a lot of catching up to do after school
Thank you so much for the advice!
Theres also a type of concrete that is made to let water through to the soil. But i dont think they are using that kind.
These youtubers, Evan and Katelyn, made a thing they called a catio. Like a little box that connects to a window to let your cats look outside. I feel like this could be a cool thing for you guys!
They have one I believe
omg evan and katelyn. they spoil little joob with the catio!
I love Evan and Katelyn! Joob is so cute!!
Kristi on the channel the Sweet life of Zach and Kristi made one too, but instead of a box it was a whole back patio they weren't using! that could offer some cool inspiration too
For the patio, you guys are going to have to get a saw. No matter what, the stone tiles will need to be cut.
There's spacers you can get to evenly space the titles between each others (they are + shaped) and I'd recommend them to make things even.
You should place down all the tiles before sticking them to the slab too. It's tempting to do it as you go but don't.
Don't make the same mistake we did.
Grouting is easy to do btw.
Thanks!
I'm definitely taking notes 📝 from this.
It should be a wet saw, too.
Haha nothing gets your advice across quite like
"don't make the mistakes I did ☠"
Thank you thank you thank you for bringing native plants to notice!!! A lot of invasive species are grown in gardens and they drive the native species, that are crucial for the ecosystem, to literally nothing. Growing native plants and letting them grow on their own is SO important for the soil, other plants around, microbes and all the animals. This is sooo appreciated ✨
"he's a frog. He can jump." you should write all of Jun's hilarious quotes and make them into a book. I think we'd all buy it
I love that stainless steel kitchen sink and counter. My bigges pet peeve is how in my kitchen I can't put down any hot pots or pans because the countertops are made from this weird plasticky materal and it melts when you put a hot pan on it.
That is terrible kitchen design.
But stainless steal gets hot after the hot pans and ive butned myself before by that
Yeah, that is a downside to solid surface/ coriane. I did have to warn customers that the manufacturers didn't cover hot pans directly on any countertop, even granite.
The place I live currently has the same issue. :( We just bought a lot of oven mitts and keep them on the counter, so we can grab one super-fast to put under anything hot after we cook.
I'd suggest getting some good wood cuting boards, then on the side of your cooktop, keep one there for your pots and cuting. Its a pretty good solve for this
How to make us watch the ads? Put the products on the kitties! When you put the sunglasses on Poki I lost it 😂.
The challenge with laying your own tile is probably making sure it drains to a place that is appropriate, make sure to read up / watch a lot of guides for laying tiles if you guys are set on doing it yourself.
The concrete base will already be sloped toward drains we have in the yard!
@@RachelandJunAdventures I suggest watching a bunch of videos on doing the tiles: in general, it's just a bit of technique with the adhesive, and you'll want to be sure any places you have to cut tile are in a less conspicuous place, say, next to the walls of the house rather than at the outside edges of your patio: you'll want whole tiles right to the edge or whatever edge pieces you may use, ...basically this'll involve a lot of measuring, and test-fitting a run along the edges for confidence's sake should prove worthwhile. You can snap a bunch of chalk lines on your concrete to be sure everything's staying straight.
Your yard is going to be amazing! Thank y'all for bringing us with y'all on your home-building journey.
I do have a suggestion. The mealybugs are usually pretty easy to deal with, although, I have no idea what the environmental laws are in Japan, I use a 1 to 8 ratio of apple cider vinegar to water to take care of the unwanted pests here in Texas and it works really well for me and there is no danger to any wildlife so that little frog would be perfectly safe. I wouldn't use a stronger mix as it could acid burn the plants, over time, so start with a low ratio and work up to whatever works for y'all.
Do you just spray it on the plants?
Thanks for the suggestion!! I don't feel comfortable spraying pesticides so I'll be happy to try something like this!
@@RachelandJunAdventures - I'm glad! I hope it works for you. We live out in the country and have all kinds of critters out here that we love to just sit and watch so I'm really careful as to not use anything that would hurt them. Mosquitoes, on the other hand, are a HUGE problem and this mix helps keep those little bloodsuckers at bay as well as some of the other creepy crawlies.
@@jo_ni_kay - Yup! Just be sure to keep the ratio of vinegar to water 1 to 8 or lower.
I need to keep this information in the back of my mind for future use. I definitely want to use natural solutions wherever possible!
Rachel: Have you had a concussion?
Jun: Not yet 😃🌸✨
Since you brought up walking barefoot on the tiles, I think that another thing to consider is how hot they can get. Because goddamn the amount of times I nearly got 3 degree burns because I was walking on hot ass tiles in the summer is not normal. Sure you can't do much about it, but I feel just taking the bright(?)/light colored ones would help a lot. And with what I saw you where already considering those, so actually don't mind this essay of mine where I covertly rant about my bad experiences with hot ground that nearly burnt my feet off in summer.
Maybe it won’t be a problem if they wear slippers 🤔
I think in Japan generally you don't go outside barefoot cause you'd make the floor or your house-shoes dirty when you went back inside anyway. And there's always outdoor carpet runners and other such things anyway. One thing about a big tile floor is it can look kind of stark and sterile without a bit of something to soften it up anyway.
tell us your experience pls 🥺
I finally got my Halloween kitty shirt and now I’m going to wear it everyday because I am OBSESSED

We recently put tiles on our concrete patio. It's a bit finicky, but overall not that bad. Just use the correct tools and it should go smoothly if you have some patience
The only tip I have is to wipe off the stuff that goes between the tiles (don't know the english word) as you go. Once it dries it's a nightmare to scrape off. We laid on the patio for a few weeks with razor blades trying to scrape it off. It'll come off, but we regret not just wiping it off when we were putting it down.
grout is the word
@@kingofgar101 grout is indeed the word. Thank you
Yes, wiping the grout off with a wet cloth/sponge as you go is VERY important for your future sanity. My mom and I learned this the hard way just as you did, hahaha
Here's all the things that I've tried for mealie bugs in my own garden:
Dish soap + water mix
Neem oil (they didn't seem to respond to this though)
Alcohol - this was the only thing that worked. We sprayed our plants that had mealie bugs with some alcohol and it doesn't harm the plants because it quickly evaporates.
Also consider using ladybugs to eat the mealie bugs.
ALSO spray the dirt around the mealie bug infested plants - mealie bugs lay eggs in the soil!
I would suggest that they buy a batch of lady beetles every year and make videos of their release. Not only is it good for their garden but is content for their channel.
Ladybugs have the potential to bring parasites too apparently?
Captain Jack’s dead bug brew might work, but I’ve only ever used it on thrips that were on a mint plant I received through the mail.
They had a video of them catching ladybugs to use for that exact reason :)
I've used rubbing alcohol successfully.
But now I can only picture Rachel kidnapping more lady bugs 😅
Editing skills have reached a whole new level, my gosh. Loving the office edit and the identification of all the little critters you film 💕
Its great to hear native plants will given priority! Invasive species are a highly underacknowledged topic
As someone who has done DIY tiling, my advice is have someone else tile for you!! Tiling is really, really not fun - you can't let your mortar or grout get dry while you're working, you're on all fours for long periods of time, you purchase all these tools that are pretty much unitaskers (can only be used for tiling)...in retrospect I would have paid someone to tile for me if I'd known. What about having a stamped concrete patio instead of tiles?
There are places to rental equipment. That's what a couple of my family members used when they redid their kitchen.
I love native plants. Everywhere I've lived, I've wanted a natural looking yard. I don't understand the appeal of a generic yard full of invasive plants that so many people seem to want.
I SO appreciate you taking the time to identify each creature you find in your yard!! I love knowing what they are, but also love that you're being mindful of the ecosystem 🥰
I did my patio myself too, its leveled out with gravel underneath and then I I put sort of brick stones on it, (we can get them in different colors here in Germany red, grey etc.), they age naturally and I love when moss is growing over the time, and the drainage of rain is quite good
(sorry English is not my native language 🤪)

Now I know the kanji for "floor". I also like how Rachel doesn't hate spiders, (most) insects and frogs.
Bugs are only scary because they’re small. I’m terrified of most spiders but I’m not scared of tarantulas because they’re big.
@@rachelcookie321 And that is weird to me (the fear for smaller critters). Phobias are irrational. For instance, I have a phobia about snakes, but not as much because they're venomous, but because they're weirdly shaped. Same thing with rain worms.
@@verano8202 it’s because when they’re really small it’s hard to keep an eye on them. They might crawl under your shirt or into your ear or you might accidentally squish them.
@@rachelcookie321 I can definitely see how that would scare someone, but it's definitely a case by case basis. For me, it's more about speed & actual potential harm, so I enjoy most snakes & critters but not this fast, small indigenous spider that is occasionally in my home. I let them be if they're not causing any disturbance.
When I bought a little bungalow on more than an acre of land 18 years ago I also bought with it millions of white "meal worms" or "white grubs". They were all eating the lawn. I replaced the lawn with natural plants (some people call them weeds), stopped watering with city water (using only rainwater from the roof) and the grubs all died. I use different (mostly hand-powered) cutting tools for getting rid of the plants I don't like. I never pull the plants with my hands. I just cut their stem and any low lying leaves and leave the roots to die or be killed by the natural plants that I don't cut.
the sponsorship ads were unironically the best part of the video lol, love rachel's sense of humor
The second you said "put your gloves on!!", THAT'S when you became an oba-chan! The house and yard both look great so far, good luck with the mealy bugs!
Just keep the concrete pad uncovered. We had tiles on our pad that kept cracking - it was a nightmare, so we eventually just ripped them all up. Much easier to take care of. With a bit of texture stamped on the concrete it's less slippery when wet and looks pretty good too!
Sidewalks have textures for a reason.
Exciting to see your home coming along. I don’t know what the building regulations are in Japan, but something to consider while building, is easy access for your aging parents. I.e. ramps, navigating stairs to get to the bathroom, etc. We are in the process of removing a step up in our bathroom to make it easier for our elderly family members to visit us. Your folks might not need it yet, but it is nice to know that when they do, you won’t have to change everything.

I lowkey want y'all to just post an ASMR video of your yard once it comes together. Just the birds and bugs at the start of the video sound so soothing.
I never comment on youtube videos - BUT - for the mealybugs ordering predatory mites to introduce to your yard works incredibly well. You might check and be sure the predatory mites are allowed/not invasive in Japan, but that's the best solution that I've found. Better than spraying even!
I think they have ladybugs there.

You can add tint color to concrete and have it sealed.. More cost effective.
about the ad: one, well made! two, THANK YOU for showing us that they stay in upsidown! surprisingly useful!
For a more cost effective (depending on availability of supplies) and much simpler patio option, I would suggest a concrete stain! There are acid and water based stains that can be painted directly onto concrete for either a solid color or taped off in patterns to look like tile. They are extremely durable and completely weather proof. As long as your contractor does a smooth finish on your concrete, it will be comfortable to walk on, as well.

Honestly I wouldn't use tile at all, it's going to crack eventually and be super slippery. it'd actually be a lot cheaper to get printed concrete done and It can give you the style of stone for your deck. you can buy the molds as well.
Tiling on concrete. Type S concrete, it can handle water. For spacers, popsicle sticks from the dollar store is what the guys use here in Canada. Far cheaper and you just break it off. You can use PL glue but water can easily get under and pop it off during a front. For cutting, if you do stone then a diamond blade wet saw (or someone holding a hose so the cut stays cool) is required.
*agrees on handle finishes*

Frogs are a really good sign that your area is pretty healthy! They are super sensitive to pollution cos they absorb so much through their skin. I'm so excited to see how your garden evolves and all the lil creature friends you'll make!
Stained concrete has so many options cheaper than tile but with the same look or more interesting designs. I made a faux marble design but retained the grippy concret texture.
Rachel you're hilarious 😂 The rant about the mealie bigs with Michael Scott cracked me up!
I don't know if it's as common in Japan, but you might look into the cost of just having the concrete polished and sealed - no tile at all. That can get slick if it's wet however, so maybe not the best idea for outside (tbh I personally just like smoothed concrete as it is - it's especially easy to clean if you have a pressure washer).
As for laying tile, probably the most difficult part will be cutting the tiles at the edge if the concrete isn't absolutely perfectly sized - cutting ceramic or stone tiles requires special saw blades and other equipment. Also you will want to pay special attention to the texture of the tiles, as mentioned they could get slick when wet. Grout will also need to be properly sealed as well to prevent anything from growing in it.
They could also paint the cement
@@XpetraXpazlX Or even have a colored cement put in, although I'm not totally sure what options are available for that in terms of residential installation in general, and in Japan specifically.
Spray the mealy bugs with Neem oil mixed with water. One way to clean up the garden is to rent a rototiller. Then you can mix in any amendments like minerals and fertilizer. A gardencenter should be able to test your soil.
You guys are such a cute couple!
The only problem with concrete with tiles on top is it doesn’t have a lot of give, wood does, I had concrete and tile at my old place and it cracked with temperature changes plus you have earthquakes. Make sure there are rubber dividers between the house structure and the deck slab to allow for stresses to be absorbed without cracking your tile
One tip, be sure and select porcelain tile, as it is freeze-resistant. Another reader suggested small tiles to prevent cracking over time, and that is also true. Your previous patio had those (teak?) free-standing tiles, and those are very practical as well.

Rachel's advertising of these sunglasses was everything. My stomach hurts from laughing.
I’ve never heard of a tiled deck. Maybe because of the weather here in Chicagoland. But I think composite decks are nice. Here they are more expensive than wood. They don’t need the yearly maintenance of restaining or sealing, they don’t dry out, need sanding or feel yucky on your feet. I think you should reconsider or save up for it. Have you talked to people who have a composite deck to ask questions or see it in person? Anyway, I love seeing tours of different stores in Japan, any kind of stores, to see different things than we have here. Please do more of these kinds of videos.
Whenever you did a close up of an insect or animal Benji would pet the screen 😂
If you can't some to stop from coming back (weeds) boil water and pour it over the spot and it'll kill it. It's good for the super stubborn ones that come back no matter how much your pull and mulch. Congrats on the new house :) I love the sound of those crickets.
Yay another video
Poki with the sunglasses on lol his face 😂 Also aww that cute lil froggie!! So cute!!
My in-laws bottom story of their house has sealed concrete floors. it looks really nice (and is easy to clean)
I second the idea of stamping the concrete. My neighbour had it done and it's a lovely patio. Someone else mentioned how outside tile tends to crack. And get somone to install ot if you do settle on tile.
Movement is not your friend when it comes to tile. You need a very solid surface or your tile and grout lines can crack out. Order a few extra tiles to have available for repairs. Good luck. This is very exciting.
I really love how you put the scientific names on the little buddies
Jun: "he's a frog, he can jump"
I dunno why I laughed but I laughed, that was cute XD
I do love Haku-As-A-Product-Shelf XD I'm not a gardener at any level, but there's just something exciting about planning out a yard/garden. Being able to design colors & themes and walkways seems so exciting.
