I canNOT stand how things are purposefully manufactured with plastic to break after a certain amount of time! Folks have to buy the same thing brand new instead of being able to fix it! The amount of waste we produce is utterly bananas. And! In October we moved from an apartment into a house. We have 3 cats (2 Maine Coons and a very old lady from a rescue shelter). Before we moved, we were discussing putting the oldest down. She has cancer and really wasn’t doing well. We thought the move and then living in a house with lots of stairs would be too much for her. A few days before the move, she started perking up a bit it and we found it impossible to end her life. She was the first out from under the sofa, explored the whole house, including the cellar and has used the cat toilet ever since (in the apartment she regularly did her business wherever she was). She is a new cat. Awake, curious and active. All our cats seem to love the new place.
    Update: We had to say goodbye to our lovely India. But she had four months in the new house and enjoyed it. It went downhill suddenly and very fast. She didn’t suffer and was loved and cuddled till her heart stopped beating.

    It's so true what Rachel said about how much knowledge is needed to make any informed decision when it comes to housing (or anything really). I recently wanted to make one of the rooms in my apartment more noise proof and the amount of options out there is insane. I literally had to take a few hours every day after work to sit down and really research which option would be the best for me and which one is the most effective for what I want. Everyone was suggesting noise absorbing foam but it turns out, that doesn't do much for not letting noise in. I'm glad you guys made all those decisions beforehand and insulated your house properly and also took care of all the little details like the space under the door and the American outlets. Small things as they seem but they're really important for a nice living experience.
    Also, your neighbours 😭😭😭 making mochi with a friendly elderly Japanese neughbour sounds so magical. And you guys both having a crush on the George Clooney looking one 🤣 so cute!

      Yes; and in this case, built in redundancy ensures future payment for work rendered, as in replacing the thirty down lights - that would've been another $3000 just for the lights. I'd think there are other things that they've built into the house design as well.

    I definitely feel your pain, Rachel, with this whole "I took way too long doing this cause I'm too much of a perfectionist and now I feel bad about it" endeavor, but really, you weren't wrong to do that, by any metric. This is meant to be the house you'll live in for the rest of your life, of course you're right to want it to be perfect, if something came out wrong it would bother you for years, and you'd regret not being perfectionist before. I hope you know that, and if there was any hint of doubt there, then I hope this comment helped bring you some peace of mind! XD

    Oh! I'm SO glad y'all have so many outlets. We asked for extra in our home as well and after the house was built we wondered if we went overboard but it turns out, after almost 20 years here, that we actually didn't ask for enough. I’m in a house built in the late 40’s early 50’s and almost every room has only 2 outlets ( minus bathrooms with 1 each ) and in my room one particular outlet is behind my bed frame ( very inconvenient ) and it has to be used for 1 long wall where most my things requiring power are and a small wall. That one poor outlet has to be used for 5 - 7 different cords while the other outlet only powers the tv. 😑

    You two could go to a builder's convention and speak about some of the things you experienced in your journey as a younger couple building and as a couple with international ideas. Or you could write a memoir! or book about what to think about when building a home. I think that would be really helpful for others. I think you did an absolutely wonderful job and learning and taking the time to build something for yourself. It takes a lot of effort to genuinely express yourself via your living choices. So many times, people chose the easiest or the cheapest route which is totally understandable. However, I known so many couples who don't feel comfortable in their living spaces because it reflects the market or trend rather than the person they are. Big applause for really putting the effort in. It's inspiring.

    2:16 Now I really want to see this laundry chute. As you described the sliding door cleaning issue, I was silently saying, "use a hanging slider"... and then you guys did that. (made me smile). Even though it has been a while, this video inspires me to put together the highlights of when our house was built. It was so nice to hear your realization at 14:51 regarding "the amount of detailed knowledge is needed to make informed decisions" for a building project. 15:40 that foundation of knowledge is what Architects study and do all the time. That is what we do and why it helps so much when planning a home. 17:34 "Everything plastic eventually breaks and ... makes me ... so ... ANGRY", Rachel's expression just then... she's about to snap! I am so glad you included the bruised legs image at 21:01 as that is a great example of how a space does not work based on simple aspects of scale, proportion, and proprioception. 27:17 Japanese George Clooney! and Lawnmower Mochi Guy! - you guys are lucky to have such nice neighbors, something you really have no control over. Yes, thanks to Micaela for helping kick off this odyssey over 3 years ago.
    P.S. If one hovers over the thumbnail in TH-cam you can see Rachel gesticulating wildly all over the place and Jun is calmly static just chilling on the bed, so indicative of personality.

      @@Kimbonessness On my TH-cam suggestions (running down the side of someone on PC with the suggestion panel open), if one hovers over the suggestion thumbnail a small portion of the video plays where the thumbnail is normally, it typically is somewhere around the half of the video. About the lights: that's also something that annoys me with a lot of those modern light fixtures you can find in Germany these days. They're like intricate led strips set in brass, etc. and are made into the most interesting shapes, but turns out most of those you can't replace the leds inside. Why on earth would I want that in my home and on my conscious?!

    • @julial4569
      @julial4569 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yep! I live in Ukraine, and we needed to move to a new appartment as fast as possible, so we just hired someone to decorate it and make the decisions for us. It turns out, this person just ended up using these LED lights everywhere. And they can't be replaced! The main light source in our bathroom broke like a year ago, and we still can't get it fixed, because it's just a LED circle inside a lamp, so it needs to be replaced comletely, and we need to hire someone to do that. It's so different and difficult compared to just simply changing the light bulbs

    • @rachelrecycles369
      @rachelrecycles369 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That level of knowledge needed to make informed decisions is so high, even for renovations. My parents renovated their kitchen 10 years ago, and the oven with the range randomly broke recently (and cannot be repaired). It has been so difficult to buy a replacement oven, and some of this could have been mitigated or avoided with more research during the renovation process that could have led to a different layout.

      Even in a good neighborhood, people don't greet you like that. Everybody is living their own separate lives.

    Congratulations!
    Also, not really related, but I watch you just as much to see two human beings truly and genuinely loving and in love as much as I come for the cats.
    There is no deep dark abyss of tears your videos cannot breathe air into.
    So yes, you deserve this! 👏 May 2022 bring even more blessings!
    P.S. I hate those non-replaceable light fixtures too

    Major congrats on the new house! I used to walk into everything and thought I was just clumsy. Then I started B12 shots this year and it almost completely went away! (Not saying that is what you have/had) I am still slightly clumsy at times but not running into doorposts and furniture multiple times a day has stopped.

      Of course it'd be Poki. That cat's like a siren come feeding time.

    So happy for you guys! ♥
    In regards to the sponsorships: I think you guys should continue to take a many sponsorships as you want. The bulk of the house funds could be done, but now you need to build up emergency funds for yourselves, the cats, and house repairs or changes. You guys were super thorough and thoughtful about how you wanted your home, but the real test may come after spending some time living there. Little things might crop up, like little changes that make life easier, or changing things that didn't work out how you planned.
    I personally have never minded how you guys handle ads and sponsorships because they feel nicely integrated into the videos. You guys do an informational segment and a mini reviews, and those are super helpful, and it never feels dragged out or pointless.

    I"M SO HAPPY FOR YOU BOTH :D Just the fact that you combed through so much research to build one is insane. Good thing you guys were able to catch some problems before you started and that you were able to get help from the comments. It sounds like you guys really lucked out on the location based on how nice the neighbors are! Happy Holidays to you and your cats!
