  • Can you mill a part on a lathe? What about turning on a mill? The answer is yes! Here are some of the tricks of the trade.
    If you are lucky enough to work in a machine shop equipped with plenty of milling machines and lathes, chances are you'll always be able to use the right machine tool for your application. Sometimes, however, you might find yourself in the position of having to do a job that requires mill work and only have a lathe available or vice-versa. What do you do in that case?
    In this video, Derrick Hogan, CNC Technology Instructor at North Georgia Technical College, shows how to overcome the problem. Together with some of his students, he shows how you can use a mill to do lathe work and how to use a lathe to execute some milling operations.
    Have you ever tried any of these machining methods? Leave a comment below and don’t forget to subscribe.

    I absolutely love machining, I love the culture. I learned everything I've known by talking the talk and taking the time to learn shop to shop. I love the learning atmosphere and the willingness of the old guys to teach the young and eager. Warms my heart.

    I have actually used this, my boring head had to be penned because it was a two piece construction. It worked very well! I made clamping blocks with pens. Thanks for sharing !

    I know the ritzy cnc guys would complain, but this is good stuff and still perfectly viable. Ive heard from old timers that if you cant afford both, then start with the lathe.

      Not quite. Turning on a mill, yes but FACING on a lathe - LOL - I know what you mean tho - I gave it a thumbs down for that too.
      I'm going to try screwcutting / threading on my mill - at some point in the future - Machining by Mike !

    Looks more like turning on a lathe, put the part in the tool holder and an end mill in the chuck and I'd call that milling on a lathe. 😜

    How did u afford all that ?

  • @bencesarosi7718
    @bencesarosi7718 ปีที่แล้ว

    That unfortunately did not help me much doing milling operations without a mill or a milling attachment.

    You forgot to show me how to do a lathe AND mill part on a drill press. lol

    • @millomweb
      @millomweb 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      OK, I'll show you that one ;) I also plan to do screwcutting/threading on a mill - for some completely odd-ball pitches. All to come someday on Machining by Mike. Feel free to subscribe ! (and notification bell etc.)

    So what do you want me to show you ? ask on Machining by Mike ! There's one request here for turning and milling using a drilling machine.....

    Absolutely no doubt this gets a thumbs down for failing to show milling on a lathe !

    4:10 What are you faffing about at ? Touch the top of the cutting tool with the bottom of your work then move the X-axis by d/2.
    Why is the quill extended ? - Ahh, cheap mill ?

  • @millomweb
    @millomweb 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    31:00 Of course anyone with any sense doing this would use a
    la....
    rotary table.

  • @millomweb
    @millomweb 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    6:10 Looks like the cutting tool is on parallels. You are really boring (but not boring ;) ) put the tool on a funny angle and enjoy yourself ;)

    26:10 Quill power feed not working ? Use the knee power feed !!!
    What do you mean it hasn't got power feed to the knee ? Well that's your fault for buying a TOY milling machine !
