"There is no fuel anywhere" our race against an empty tank S1EP55

  • Today we are leaving Tarkastad, but before we head off we need fill up Mouse. Unfortunately there is an issue.. ALL petrol stations in town are completely drained of petrol! We had amazing looking dirt roads planned, but Mouse is on half a tank. We decided not to risk it and together with the help of some locals we find the closes petrol station 80 km's away, but that is the only option in that town. We decide to head that way while holding our thumbs that this small petrol station in the middle of nowhere actually has petrol...

    Nice interesting roads, believe me as an ex Free Stater, the Free State is always beautiful, winter or summer. I just love the endless views of the Free State.

    Good run, petrol being out of concern with route plans 🤔NZ

      It happens, but then you make a plan and try your best. 😁 and sometimes it rewards you with a nice road!

    Hi Werner, maybe you should invest in a 3 litre fuel bladder just for safety sakes. It should fit nicely on top of your bags.

      We have over 400km of range on the 390 (the smallest tank)... so we should have enough if we just remember to fill up when we get the change. Our own fault :). We will definitely take a fuel bladder when we go out of SA though

    The Eastern Cape is a big problem these days with regards to relying on fuel and other things. Many of the towns have regressed into ghost towns. We also almost had an issue getting fuel on the way to Molteno many years ago. Best is to get local knowledge on your route for issues.

    • @thetravelingtortoises

      We must say that we only had fuel issues twice so far on our trip. 1st time due to loadshedding in Sabie and then this time. But other than that we never had issues. We found the Eastern Cape to be one of the beat places to travel actually. Beatiful roads and scenery but also the towns we went to was all fine and had no issues. But its a big province and we will have to go back and explore more we miss the Eastern Cape.

      Thank you! the licenses we will get once it's ready... no idea when that might be! We checked last week and it was still in the process of being printed (already the same for weeks). We are holding our thumbs that it isn't going to take another couple of months!

    I am on a trip right now, i always top up when there is fuel, I fill again before stopping for the night and also carry a 2L bottle. Seeing the troubles you had it maybe a good idea to have a few extra liters in between your bikes. Can't tell when you will need it.

      We can go 400km without fuel stops (based on the little 390's fuel consumption), so in South Africa that is more than enough. We just need to learn to fill up when we can (in this case the night before when we arrived in Tarkastad). Our own fault! We are looking to buy a 6L fuel bladder once we leave SA.

      The Golden Rule of traveling in Africa - never pass a petrol station without filling up! In an emergency you can always buy diesel from a farmer or a trucker, but petrol (gasoline) is another story.

    • @thetravelingtortoises

      Very true! But the problem comes in if there is no petrol between point A and point B and then point B desides to have no petrol 🤣 so far it has been ok we have not ran out yet it is also just a matter of planning. Keeping an eye on the fual gauge and being flexable. If point B has no petrol then change the route to a place where there is petrol and you sure you can reach easily. We had more than enough peteol left to get to 4 diffirent towns but not enough to do the planned route. But this is part of the adventure and these things will happen. As long as you dont make a big deal out of it and just have fun its all good. You never know, that unplanned route sometimes turns out to be amazing!😁
