I’ve always quite liked the oddballs of the automotive industry. The SAABs, Citroëns and Mazdas of the world. I personally even drive a SAAB and it’s quite sad to see everything evolving into a boring and horrible Crossover SUV.
I was at both sides of the spectrum. In the majority of my life I was driving either a Saab or a Corolla (2 subsequent models). One is a unique but quite odd thing with lots of things to be angry about, the other is the epitome of usability, reliability and, in fact, boredom. Now I'm driving a Mazda 3 Skyactive and it is joyous. Beautiful, familiar, heart warming, everything that a VW isn't, just to name one manufacturer who is so much higher praised. It has it's little faults and oddities but it is enjoyable. More cars should be built like this! Mazda knows its place now, they are humble and honest and dare to be different. I like that.
@@gergelygaal1456 seems like we have quite the similar automotive taste. If someone asks me what kind of car they should get I’ll always recommend a Toyota or a Honda due to their reliability and I’ve considered the new Mazda 3 sedan due to its sheer beauty and the availability of a good manual transmission.
I'd add Lancia to that list. It's truly sad to see these super innovative manufacturers reduced to either nothing, or reduced to making slightly less boring cars than the rest of the industry. Well, at least Mazda is still going with some interesting options, but I'm still in awe that PSA thought it was a smart move to create DS as a separate brand instead of moving Citroën more upmarket.

@@IntergalacticBinman we don't get the wagon Mazda3 in Australia and the turbo. Would have been perfect for my wife. Unfortunately just an sp25 gt for us.
For those curious: the Miller cycle is functionally the same thing Toyota uses in their hybrid cars, the "Atkinson cycle". Why they're different names isn't important, the same concept applies. A delayed intake valve closing results in a shorter intake stroke and a longer exhaust stroke, extracting more energy out of combustion, and therefore better efficiency. A shorter intake stroke however, does reduce the power a bit. This is where the supercharger comes in. It was discovered that for a minimal amount of boost, it was actually more efficient to use the supercharger for compression instead of the engine, gaining the power back while still being fairly efficient. The downside is that all the piping was way more expensive and complicated than Toyota's way of covering the weak low RPM torque with the instant torque of electric motors, so no one really tried since.
I just got my first car, a bright red 2015 Mazda 3 hatchback a couple years ago and let me tell you, even Mazdas “Boring cars” still handle better than 90% of what’s offered by the big 3. I feel like Mazda just puts a lot more thought and care into designing their cars over the big 3 since it’s harder for them to attract sales than say Toyota and Nissan.
This is why I'm stuck on Mazda! My first car was a Mazda 3. Then I got a Miata. Now I need more cargo space, so I drive a Mazda 6. I love to astound people when they realize my sedan is bigger than half of the SUV's on the road and still nimble enough to outpace most of them :)
New toyotas look meh, new Hondas look like a car my 70 year old grandfather would own. Nissan. . .altima, nuff said. Next car will prolly be a mazda 3 hatchback
It's really sad that mazda is not doing as well, my wife bought a mazda 3 under my recommendation because it was way cheaper than the corolla and civic, while still being as reliable and nicer inside. I also had an rx8 as my first car and my family have owned 2 miatas which I've driven both of and loved all of them
JDM? Casiopea? Deltarune? Man, You've been making videos specifically taylored for me for a while now and I've just only heard of you. YT Algorithm is broken AF
Absolutely fantastic vid! Just to add a few extra tidbits of historical info, Mazda and Ford's relationship was so deep that during the 80s and 90s Ford manufactured and sold rebadged Mazdas in Oceania, Southeast Asia, and Japan (the Ford Laser/Mazda 323 and the Ford Telstar/Mazda 626) and they also had a partnership with Kia since the 1970s that led to Kia making rebadged Mazdas in Korea, which also spawned the Ford Festiva/Kia Pride/Mazda 121 triplets.
Great video. I really wished the amati brand did get a chance. Love the rx7 and cosmo, brilliant cars. I will say that the 787b didn't get banned for how dominant the rotary was in the race. It was due to a change in the rules in which le mans was moving towards more f1 derived 3.5 litre engines. The 787b didn't really succeed on pace, but more efficiency and reliability. Which given the stereotypes around rotaries, is pretty funny. Overall, great video. Loved to see what happens next. Also, great music choices.
Thanks! I knew the rules change was never an outright "no more rotary engines" but I always got the vibe that it was a convenient and convoluted way to ban rotaries without directly saying so, so that's why I said it the way I did, thanks for the extra info. I should really have done more research but as I said in the vid that's an unscripted section for extra little tidbits.
Agreed. Mazda knew that the Le Mans rule changes meant 91 was the last chance for a rotary to win. But they still had a plan. They entered the IMSA Camel Prototype series in the USA with the RX792P. The car was absolutely, stunningly beautiful, and made the most amazing sounds! I saw it race at Lime Rock Park in 92, and although it wasn't competitive yet, it blew me away. Unfortunately for Mazda, the entire prototype spec was going away in 94 to be replaced with WSC open top cars with "stock block" based engines. Although the RX792P was mostly sorted out at the end of the 92 season, Mazda apparently felt that no more money needed to be spent on the project and did not compete in 93. Of course, Jag, Nissan, and the rest stopped development too. Only Dan Guerney's Team Eagle (Toyota power) did any development at all, and 93 was booorrring with Toyota winning every race that year. In fact, the Toyota Eagle was so good, they ran the whole race at Lime Rock in a moderate rain on a single set of slick tires, and won by multiple laps.

I really love the way you're sliding album covers in whenever you mention the years. Also, small note. The 787B is the only rotary to win overall at Lemans. Mazda won their class on multiple occasions prior to that, without winning overall.
Yeah...but it's still a rotary...and I don't want to replace my motor every 70k unless you use an ungodly amount of maintenance to keep it for maybe 120k.....maybe
A year ago I bought a decent 2010 Mazda 3 (Sport, I think) for a good price with the prediction from my Dad it'll rust and start falling apart in no time. Other then the fact we didn't notice its AC is gone, it's the best car I've ever driven. Especially in Canada's winter!
previous 2010 and current 2012 Mazda 3 owner here, Mazda's stopped rusting out after going independent from Ford in 2009. I work at a salvage auction lot and I never see rust on any Mazda newer than 2009 even with over 200k miles; meanwhile i get rusting out 2016+ focuses quite often
I'm not even the least bit knowledgeable about cars but damn does your commentary and editing keep me hooked awesome video, you deserve more recognition
Awesome video and very well done. I admit was a bit surprised to see the Mazda love. I'm on my sixth MX-5. At one time I had three - yes, a bit of a problem back in the day. Ha! I think Mazda is highly underrated - if you compare their mid-range SUVs to their competitors you quickly see you get quite a bit of bang for the bucks. And they are obsessed with making all their cars drive sporty - the 3 and 6 are still tons of fun despite being, on the surface, stuffy econo cars. Also with Skyactive they took a page from Apple (CNC milling each of their laptops out of a chunk of aluminum) and started custom CNCing engine blocks as needed rather than tooling up and stamping them out. There was a fascinating video they had that talked about how it was a PITA to tool up initially (like Apple, they couldn't initially get enough of the CNC mills they needed) but now they can change things around on whim and also tune each engine precisely for it's geometry, when before it was common to take one engine design and make variants by down and upscaleing it, with the down and upscaled versions being unoptimized compared to the base model. I thought I bookmarked it but sadly I can't find it or I would link it. It was pretty fascinating and caught me completely off guard since they were way, way outside the box compared to everyone else. Heck with their dogged insistence on the rotary I suppose it shouldn't be surprising. And I think with their range extended hybrid where the rotary will be the range extender, we might have found the perfect use for the rotary as well as the best compromise between electric and gasoline cars while we wait for battery tech and our weak as hell electric grid to catch up to where it needs to be before electrics will become truly practical for everyone.
Mazda 3s are surprisingly fun to drive, I think they get overllooked a bit, but I think if you're going for an economical car thats still a lot of fun, they're a grat choice.
I just wish they never got rid of the mazdaspeed department. I have an 08 speed3 and she’s been a dream to drive. Fastest cars in the lineup over the mx5 or rx8 back in the day
this is such a good video i cant explain how good you deserve way more views and subs i never new the 20b was actualy in a production car thats incredible keep up the good work

It’s honestly surprising how Mazda doesn’t get a lot of credit for how much they contribute. They really are the under dogs, but I have a feeling they’re about to make their voices louder with their new cars. I own a 21 Mazda3 and the fit and finish feels nicer than a Toyota or a Honda.
thank you, I feel like I was the only person who was ever confused as to why Mazda decided the FD was a "GT" and therefore an Efini, but the Cosmo was only a sporty Eunos for some reason.
Brilliant videos dude! I am hooked, feel withdrawal setting in already, ive watched all your uploads twice over with a 12 hour period..... Keep up the great work man!
Found your channel yesterday binman and watched every single video in a binge ending with this one. Funny because I actually own a Xedos 9 2.3 Miller Cycle I got for free after searching for one for about a year. Also want a xedos 6 as I think its the coolest car to be raced in the BTCC in the early 90s. No idea where the original race cars are anymore however there is a Xedos 6 that comes up for sale every 6 months or so that was built as a factory BTCC show car for the dealerships. So its fully stripped out with a cage, fire extinguisher setup and adjustable suspension but has the stock 2.0 k series V6 engine and gearbox which has long been on my list. Love the content keep it up!
They do feel connected, like "Mazda is the Citroen of Japan" or vice versa. Citroen also tried to jump on the rotary trend but they stopped after they debuted the GS Birotor during the 70s oil crisis and consequently sold almost none of them lol.
Honestly an amazing video for your first attempt, earned yourself a sub. Fun fact as well, the whole “787B was so fast they banned rotaries at le mans” thing is actually another fanboy myth! The ACO who govern le mans mandated a 3.5 liter NA engine rule for 1992, to keep car costs down since group c was getting more expensive than F1, so Mazda went all out in making a rotary car to win before then. In the end the leading cars broke down and the 787B ironically won on reliability and fuel economy instead of speed. Also I’d never thought I’d find another Casiopea and KGLW fan
Yeah, it's such an strange twist that a rotary car won an endurance race by being more reliable than the rest of the field! Also, fear not, we Casiopea and Gizzard fans are not few in number, you just have to know where to look...
Even smaller correction, I think the 3.5L NA rule was implemented to persuade the manufacturers to enter F1, as the WSC had become immensely popular, even more so than F1. As a result of these highly strung and developed engines it became cheaper to run a full season of F1 than to run a 6 race season of WSC. Previously most Manufacturers in WSC ran basically whatever they had laying around, often based on production car engines. Porsches using developed versions of their 1970s 935 engine, Sauber/Mercedes basically ran Turbocharged S-Class engines, Jaguar used the V12 from the XJS that had already seen success in Touring cars in the early 80s
The funniest thing is that the Mazda wasn't that reliable to begin with but actually ended up winning anyway courtesy of other top runners breaking down. Also, if the rotaries were indeed banned, Autoexe wouldn't use the engine for their Le Mans campaign. Not that much of a successful run I know but enough to beat the "rotaries are banned hurr durr" allegations.
Another correction to this video would be that the FD Rx-7 isnt at all the first rotary engine that "worked out" for mazda. The FD didnt actually sell nearly as well as the previous Generations of Rx7s (SA22, FB, FC) because the FD is more of a almost Japan only car while the previous Rx7s were massive export hits especially to the united states.
BRUH Your content, is simply stunning. Writing it after watching 2 of your vids, looking forward to binge watch rest of them. Wishing all the best and hope you will definitely see major growth since you deserve it. Great quality of narration
My Zennial attention span allows me to tell you that the modern Miller cycle (and related modern Atkinson cycle) is when they hold the intake valve open a while longer so that the piston starts pushing air-fuel mixture out of the intake valve, which reduces the compression ratio while preserving the expansion ratio, enormously improving efficiency. The Miller cycle, over the Atkinson cycle, adds forced induction to help offset the power loss caused by this change.
Since making the video I have since taken the time to sit down and learn what it actually means, but thanks for taking the time to explain it in a succinct way! Also love the work you've done on AngeTheGreat's engine simulator, I tried to use the Bugatti W18 you made (or was it oror?) on the discord server as a demonstrator in my Bugatti video my my PC got very angry with me, that was back in the unoptimised version of the sim

@@sethjackson2266yes but it is funny triangle
Subbed. Interesting use of randum memes, good editing and pretty informative .
Holy shit, casiopeia?! This is quickly becoming my favorite channel
actually the most underrated channel on the platform 💀
26:54 even worse?
This has got to be one of the best videos I've seen.
The production value, the voiceover, just everything fits so well
Did I hear Casiopeia in this video? Absolute patrician music choice. Subbed
I'm not even the least bit knowledgeable about cars but damn does your commentary and editing keep me hooked
awesome video, you deserve more recognition
2:11 the callout is insane 😭
Subscriber 600! Great video, I love the way you told the story of Mazda here, and the editing was first rate, as was the humour.
Knowing just how amazing the K series V6 sounds, I can only imagine how the V12 would have sounded
Man, this is like a rated R Up to Speed, love it and love the memes!
Fastest cars in the lineup over the mx5 or rx8 back in the day
the music references and soundtrack are so good wtf
Nice vid! As a '21 Mazda 3 2.5T hatchback owner, I can say that Mazda is best car company- they completely won over my heart
this is such a good video i cant explain how good you deserve way more views and subs i never new the 20b was actualy in a production car thats incredible keep up the good work
Tbh, I was waiting for you talking about mazda furai concept as it’s pretty interesting thing and definitely very beautiful one. But anyway, nice video!
Wait, what? This was your first vid ever? Nice! Loved the little joke at the end
Casiopea, Regular Car Reviews, M I A T A, a shoutout from another favorite channel of mine, and actual Japanese history. This is one of my new favorite channels.
These videos are a breath of fresh air to what’s out these days. Spectacular work! I’m sure this channel will grow into something amazing in the near future. Keep up the good work.
Cheers- from Adam in NY
It’s honestly surprising how Mazda doesn’t get a lot of credit for how much they contribute. They really are the under dogs, but I have a feeling they’re about to make their voices louder with their new cars. I own a 21 Mazda3 and the fit and finish feels nicer than a Toyota or a Honda.
Cars, Casiopea and Comedy.
This might be my favourite video ever.
thank you, I feel like I was the only person who was ever confused as to why Mazda decided the FD was a "GT" and therefore an Efini, but the Cosmo was only a sporty Eunos for some reason.
Hey whaddya know, sometimes the algorithm actually recommends something to me that's good.
Subbed.
Throughly enjoyed the Rover video. This is just as good, keep it coming man
This video is so well made for such a small channel props def subscribing
Rewatching makes me wonder the insanity of a car if citroen and mazda made a car together
They do feel connected, like "Mazda is the Citroen of Japan" or vice versa. Citroen also tried to jump on the rotary trend but they stopped after they debuted the GS Birotor during the 70s oil crisis and consequently sold almost none of them lol.
Holy shit bro, I love this please keep it up!
Mazda only ran with 830kg while other cars ran 1000kg with 200kg ballasts loll
You are extrem underrated!! Your Videos are great!
BRUH
Your content, is simply stunning. Writing it after watching 2 of your vids, looking forward to binge watch rest of them.
Wishing all the best and hope you will definitely see major growth since you deserve it.
Great quality of narration
I wish you brought up MAZDASPEED in this, such underrated enthusiast cars. Great video tho!
As a Megadeth listening Mazdachad, this video spoke to me.
Bro, i love all your awesome music refrences! I was blown away when Rage Against The Machine made an onscreen apearence!
