I'm Spanish and I'm glad Pegaso is getting the love it deserved. The trucks were legendary and basically they moved the entire country from the ashes to a a modern industrial society. Sadly the car's weren't so lucky. If they had more time, more resources, maybe some external help from other manufacturer's engineers... one can only dream. As a note, there's a love letter to Pegaso in the Spanish passport. One of the backgrounds for a page is a Pegaso Z-102 Spyder. Gives me a smile very time I open it.

Ok, so some more info on the Pegaso truck racing program. Pegaso debuted in the 1988 ETRA Championship, specifically in its local race, at the Jarama circuit. With the drivers Andy Dawson and Antonio de Dios drove red-painted trucks. After the 1988 season, Pegaso decided officially to continue in the championship, gaining sponsorship from CS, the INI Group (owner of Pegaso) and Pirelli. Pegaso competed in Class A for the trucks with the smallest engines up to 11950 cc. The entire championship would be attended in 1989 except for the Swedish round in Mantorp Park. The pilots, Salvador Cañellas and Juan Escavias were signed. Salvador Cañellas from Barcelona had a comprehensive career that included motorcycling, rallies, and touring cars. He was linked to Pegaso through its Dakar team. In 1988 he had driven the Pace Truck in the Jarama ETRA race. Juan Escavias was from Madrid and came from touring car racing, where he won the Seat Fura Cup in 1985. In the 1989 season, Cañellas drove the No. 78 and achieved his best results in the second race at Jarama finishing 5th, and was classified in the final championship standings 9th. Escavias in Pegaso No. 77 was 5th at Hungaroring race two and finished the championship 11th. In the manufacturers’ standings, Pegaso was 6th among 7 makes in Class A. In 1990 the Pegaso works team continued to a full season with both drivers remaining in the team demonstrating much better performance. Escavias finished 3rd in the first race of the first round at Brands Hatch in the UK then took another podium finish at Paul Ricard and finally won both races of the final round at the home soil at Jarama. Cañellas scored two 3rd place finishes (at Nurburgring and Jarama). In final Class A standing Escavias was 5th, Cañellas 7th, and Pegaso team was 5th among 10 manufacturers. Italian company Iveco bought ENASA, Pegaso brand owner in 1990, and after the final signing of the sale of the company on January 1, 1991, Mario Mazzali, who would be president of Iveco-Pegaso, announced that the racing team project was cancelled. In fact, Pegaso was seen as a semi-works team in the 1991 and 1992 seasons at its home track at Jarama with Escavias and Cañellas as the drivers. The duo finished 3-4 and 4-5 in the two races of the 1992 Spanish round of the ETRA, and it was the final appearance of the Pegaso in the truck racing.
Incredible video. I love Pegaso so much. The innovation, the styling, the variety. They had everything and in the end left with nothing. Its tragic to see. You put it well, they were the greatest what if.
I'm amazed how much archive footage of Pegso you found. I could pick nits with the fact that a de-Dion suspension set-up isn't independent, but there was so much to enjoy. Incidentally, the de-Dion set-up was unlike any other, with the tube passing over the propellor shaft and large radius arms anchored to the back of the gearbox providing the axle's location. It sounds back-to-front and looked like it, but apparently it worked. Also back-to-front was the pattern for the five-speed transaxle (no synchromesh either). First was (I think) where you'd expect fifth on a conventional five-speed pattern, with second dog-legged back, then forward to third, fourth in the bottom left of the gate and fifth forwards where you might expect to find first. You could probably do a video just on the different types of bodywork fitted to Pegaso cars. Touring did a one-off known as the Thrill, which had beautifully integrated flying buttresses as part of its superstructure. One of the modern Ferrari front-engined cars (possibly the 599) had a similar arrangement but with no attempt to blend the panels seamlessly together. My favourite was probably the "standard" touring body, which is sort of like a Spanish AC Aceca.

I live on a neighbourhood in Barcelona called Sant Andreu, just outside my house lies the old Pegaso factory! When I was younger I used to think that I'd always been a park but then I found out what it could have been, such an amazing and sad story.

I've seen Trujillo's Pegaso in person, it's displayed in the Louwman museum in the Netherlands. I didn't know what it was at the time but i remember being genuinely blown away by the rear window. Makes it a much more interesting exhibit i've seen in person now that i know both the story of the Pegaso and of that specific car.
I can fill in a bit of detail about the one that was wrecked in lemans (B-104537) as I spent several months working on it back in ~2012. From what we could tell it had at some point been rebuilt with coupe parts and that meant the front suspension had been moved downwards to clear the larger oil tank. It was a brute to drive like that as the bump steer was horrendous, I cut the oil tank and fabricated a whole new lower section replicating the shape and depth of the original tanks, added trapdoors to reduce oil surge and then put it all back together sealing the seams up with lead like the original. This meant the front steering arms could be fitted back in the correct location which improved things a lot. It was still a brute but at least it drove in a straight line afterwards. The things that stick in my mind were just how heavy it was compared to the other cars of the period, powerful, heavy and slow steering. The dashboard was cut out for the carb on the back of the supercharger and it you turned the 3 fuel pumps on in the wrong order (only 2 were for normal running) then you quickly had gasoline running out of the bottom of the dashboard and into the passenger footwell. From what I know it still had it's original registration plates on but we fitted a set of UK plates as the new owner had registered it and was planning to use it on the road, I believe the last time it was seen was a redditor in a petrol station somewhere in Spain with the UK plates on. I still have a load of photos from the work done floating about somewhere.
Additionally from what I know there were 3 cars done for lemans, all 3 of them were quickly built from road cars as the cars intended for the race were the heavily modified ones with the driver offset between the RH wheels were all lost in a fire only a few months prior to the race. The 3 cars were the infamous B-104537, right hand drive with wrap around windscreen, another right hand drive one with 2 small semi circular screens and a left hand drive one. IIRC the reason for the right hand drives and the heavy offset of the specials was that the lemans circuits right hand corners were so significant at the time that the extra weight on the inside wheels improved the lap times enough that the downsides for the rest of the circuit and overall balance was worth it.
In 1982 a guy l knew as a building contractor said he had a couple sportscaster he wanted to sell. One was a 72 Ferrari 365 GTC4 with a badly slipping clutch and a 71 Pantera with a blown engine with only 9k miles. He wanted $6k for the Ferrari and $5k for the Pantera. I offered him $9k for both. He took me to another garage on his property full of parts. Fifties Ferrari chassis engines transmissions transaxles a 57 Ferrari Mondial body minus doors and more. He said give me $10k for both cars and all of this. Deal. Turns out he was a drug dealer who was selling everything to leave the country. I got both cars back to excellent and after like 3 years l wanted to inventory what l had. One V-8 was extremely peculiar the valve covers were off and it had a completely foreign valve trane with gear driven cams. I had a friend come over, an older gentleman who spent most of the 50 and 60 as a racing mechanic in Europe and showed him the engine. He looked at it and then he almost whispered "Pegaso" l knew about them but not much. About 13 years later l heard of a man in Vermont that had a driving Soautchik bodied Z-102 and part of a Touring car he was starting to restore. After soaking it for a week the we could spin the crank with a wrench. He bought it and like 5 years later he had both cars at Pebble Beach. Oh yeah, first watch. Liked and subscribed
