The transfer portal and NIL have wrecked college football. As a USC alum, there’s nothing more sacred in sports than feeling connected to your Alma mater and its athletics. With the ridiculous, obscene amount of turnover, I feel like I’m rooting for a shell and not an actual team. How can teams gel and assume an identity - for better or for worse - if players become nothing but vagabonds looking for whatever they can get their hands on, be it NIL money or starting RIGHT NOW? Why on earth would anyone want to be a head coach in this system? Why should any head coach feel an ounce of loyalty to their current employer? Recruiting commitments are a farce - why recruit at all if all your time and energy ultimately benefits another program when your top recruits decide to transfer? Some pretty disappointing teams have come along at USC, but even then, you felt like you were disappointed *with* them not *at* them. Now that there’s the poison of money injected into the system, these are no longer players, just temporary employees with temporary badges. Who wants to financially support that? College athletics is built on tradition and mystique. If it continues evolving into what it’s becoming, teams are going to need to be bankrolled by private equity to survive, because the alumni spigot is going to dry up real quick.

At one time, long ago in the Cornhusker glory days, I truly enjoyed college football. The football team was part of the university. The team would even play for pride, for the team, and yes, even for honor. Why? Well for the inherent good of giving back. Plus, in days of yore, not all the time, but most of the time, character still mattered. To leave early is to admit that the core concern of that football player is money. Give that player a three year contract, and the most effort you’ll get back is in the third year, with the goal of raising his $$$ worth. We’ve all seen how well that works. 😂😂😂. We now pamper and coddle in the NFL and it will spread through college ball like a cancer. Short term, you get some rich kids who think the now what success is. Guaranteed contracts in the NFL and money in college is football sitting on the end of a branch cutting through it on the wrong side. That’s ok. After I saw camera man treat a football on the ground as an unacceptable risk to his career, I’ve been losing interest.

Sophmore and Junior year broke a bone in my leg late in the season, fubula and tibia respectively. Senior year missed no game but my right knee got fucked up on a crack back block and I wasn't right the rest of the season. So at 21 im done. Still played some arena and semipro but i wasnt mature enough at 21😢

The NCAA has been around for over 100 years, and specifically over the past 40 years have had endless opportunities to redefine amateurism and find an answer to student athlete income.
Instead, they played hardball until social media grew influential enough to spread information about how athletes were being treated.
NIL may be broken, but don't go getting your panties in a bunch over a system that's been in place for a few years when the NCAA had decades to prevent this situation.

Really? It wasn’t when Mr Saban (since LSU) did this tactic of over recruiting talent. Then because of Oregons fast paced offense which compensated for talent everywhere. Then every college started doing that. What did Saban do when he got to Bama? Got two to three levels deep full of 4/5 stars on defense and offense. That’s why the SEC has 12 of its 16 teams in the top 25 recruiting.

The playoff structure is going to change a lot. Just wait until it swells to 24 to 30 teams. It’s going to expose many programs. The bowl system was a large part of the problem. Now that they have to really fight for a championship, it’s gonna make the cream rise to the top.
One of my coaches always said that competition will make the cream rise to the top.
I think we should make the athletes wait u til they are 18 or 21 to get paid. This crap about high schoolers making a million bucks is ridiculous. Wait until they win to pay them.

What the F.?All sports, basketball, baseball football, boxing tennis, golf , loved em all for over half a century. Athletes today are just tatted up wannabe rappers, we've gone in 50 years from Bart Starr , Roger Staubach, Johnny Unitas, to Deshawn Watson, Lamar Jackson,Dak Prescott etc all DEI Qbs who could never have played back when you had to have a brain to play the position . They are semi successful today because the games (all sports) have been softened and dumbed down. Modern sports like modern society is circling the toilet bowl,

  • @sheaconnelly4287

I think all college athletes should get paid to play or at least paid tuition. Football especially. That is a sport that most likely includes multiple physical injuries. It is also linked to brain injuries and sometimes death. Why my sons didn’t play football. I did and suffered bodily injury and multiple concussions in middle and high schools. I have dealt with depression from those injuries my whole life. If these athletes aren’t compensated monetarily when the schools are with TV deals. It is a crime. They’re the ones making the product.
