Limping when walking is common, especially if you have a condition such as osteoarthritis that impacts the joints in the lower extremity. There are certain reasons why it happens that are important to understand including range of motion in your joints as well as your confidence to put full weight on each leg.
The best limping exercises are the ones that will address the deficits that you have and help to build confidence to improve your walking gait. Whether it is pain, stiffness, fear, hesitancy or lack of confidence that is contributing to your limping when walking- these 3 movements will help to address it!
Join Dr. Alyssa Kuhn, physical therapist and osteoarthritis specialist as she tells you exactly what you need to know about limping and how to reduce it.

Thank you for explaining how the body moves when we are walking. I have Ankylosing Spondylitis and am in recovery from an extremely painful flare episode that lasted a year. I have challenges in all the joints you described that enable us to walk. I have been cleared to exercise and go to physical therapy finally so will try to incorporate these movements into my daily routine.

The PT told me that it is knee replacement surgery that will stop my limping , I told him that I do not want any surgery . As I come to see this video,by these exercises, you have proved them wrong. You are well learned and helping humanity. May God Almighty increase your wisdom everyday

There are situations when surgery is the best option. We were given brains and not to use them is an insult to your creator. Leaving aside the need for your doctor to make money, esp if you live, say, in the US, most doctors aim to use their knowkedge for your benefit. At least listen to them. Ask for the reasons he/she suggests surgery. Ask about alternatives such as 1 to 1 physio advice.
Dont be fooled by ads for cbd either. The doses are far too low. But the use of your own mind using relaxation and the placebo effect of telling yourself this is reducing the problem is free.

Absolutely Mind Blown!! I injured myself September 2023, diagnosed with left ankle trimalleolar fracture. I am almost 12 visits in to my physical therapy journey and still felt very apprehensive putting full weight on my left ankle, partially due to mobility and fear. I came across this post and it addressed my insecurity which gave me confidence to try the 3 exercises. I’m shocked!!!! I tried each exercise 3 times, each time paying attention to the mobility of my toes, the position and movement of my entire foot and leg and I immediately started taking longer steps with very minimal limp. Thank you, you are a life saver! Anyone who’s suffered injury or dealing with mobility restriction knows how I feel. It is a physical, emotional and mental journey. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 I can’t thank you enough!

Three years ago I was a long distance backpacker, long distance biker, and adventurer. Then I had a stroke. I went through all the PT and did all the medical things I was told to do and I can now walk and open bottles and all the things, except adventure. This was a nightmare and depressing. I gained lots of weight. My hips, hip flexors, legs and back were weak and so stiff. Then a month ago I found your videos and I know its for arthritis but its helped me so much! I think in time I'll be able to get back to adventure again. I can't tell you how much hope and normalcy i have got from your videos helping me. I can pick up things from the ground, i have less stiffness and I have more range of motion in my bad foot. Thank you so much for these videos I know they weren't for me but they have given me pain relief and hope.

This is absolutely fantastic. I'm a dancer that has had serious foot injuries, limping and other gait, leg, hip, and back problems but I've been to 12 different physical therapy labs in Los Angeles with most graduates from USC or UCLA and I have never gotten one of your common sense solutions from any PT lab.!!! I've turned to TH-cam for help which has provided common sense from around the planet and thank goodness I did that for myself. Thank you so much.

I’ve been to two therapists local to my area and while they empathize and have been helpful, they just can’t seem to hone in on my true struggles, despite explaining as best as I can. Thank you for this video, I will be doin these daily.

So glad I came accross you. You are so spot on with everything you are saying. What I especially like about your practice suggestions is, that these exercises can be done in any room or outside, without any special equipment or lying on the floor. It is all just so practical and easy to understand. And thank you for your measured delivery. Some other well meaning therapists just talk too fast for me, I suppose when you need to focus whilst coping with your disability, your mind cannot take up additional information at the speed it could without the disability. Thank you, you are ablessing.

I really appreciate your videos. You are just so direct to the actual problems . It gets to be humiliating and depressing in pain a without mobility. My whole life being an endurance outdoorsman. And being reduce to a stick man . And you help so much to regain some mobility and freedom . I constantly tell myself i should have been nicer to old people when i was younger knowing now what it feels like.

Hi Alyssa , I’m 58yrs old and have been told I need a hip replacement 😢 I used to be so active and happy in life but this has taken its toll on my body and mind. Their are days when I just want to give up on life as I’m in so much pain and can’t do the things ii use to. Find it a struggle even to just go out for a 10 minute walk as I’m limping so badly . I’m going to try these exercises to see if they can help me before I resort to a replacement 🙏 if their is anything else you can advise me to help , would be gladly appreciated! Thank you for all your video’s ❤

Get an MRI on lumbar region. I had same issue as you and was told I needed hip replacement. One leg looked longer than the other. T turned out I had spinal stenosis. The limping comes from sacral of the back per Dr Ennis who has a TH-cam channel. Best advice because if I went with hip replacement I would have had an expensive surgery for nothing. Neither of those hip doctors were good at explaining hip pain / limping and longer leg with turn out foot. So that made me doubt hip surgery was in the cards. In the end I had to have spinal fusion surgery.

Thank you so much for this video. It's been so helpful to me. I have a combination of tight tendons, hip bursitis and an old injury in one leg that added up to a persistent limp and soreness. I tried some bursitis PT exercises from another channel but found them so painful I couldn't keep up with them.
The heel lifts and staggered heel lifts worked wonders for me. I couldn't do many at first, but I could see progress -- each time, I could do more. Best of all, they caused no pain. From another of your videos, I learned that my default stance was on one leg and called "hip adduction" and that it wasn't helping my situation. So whenever I found myself getting into that stance, I did heel lifts instead. 😀
I got to the point I could do heel lifts throughout washing the dishes. I realized tonight I could stand still and bear weight on both feet without hip adduction and without pain or soreness for the first time in months or years -- real progress and a big change! Thank you again.

Very interesting video explaining how the toes are involved with walking and changing the brain patterns and strengthening the weak area. tried it a few times and I can now see the imbalances causing my limp.

That is sooooo helpful! I immediately tried your exercises and can see what I need to work on - specifically. I am more mobile than my confidence has led me to believe, but there are also areas of stiffness that I will start working on. You may have given me back my ability to walk, which is something I love. Thank you.
