This is where I be "that guy" and tell you that the thunderclap was in the Edward Norton movie, not the Eric Bana movie. Also, while I'm here, Hulk's loudest thunderclap might kill people but presuming that Hulk has at least some subconscious control over the force of the thunderclap, what would be the minimum decibel level required to put out the fire seen in the movie. Let's say it's 20 feet away.
Kyle Hill Regarding the 'extra mass' thing, Animorphs used that explanation with the Z-Space dimension. Then at one point they got trapped in Z-Space and rescued by a spaceship, because Z-Space is also how FTL is done.

About growing mass in comics, I've always had this theory for Groot. Since Groot is a living tree, he basically gains mass like any other plant, converting carbon dioxide from air into carbon and oxygen, the carbon forms 99% of the mass in plant biomass. Which means Groot, using his accelerated healing/growing factor combined with photosynthesis, allows him to quickly obtain carbon from the air and increase his mass extremely quickly.
that brings up the same problem as Superman charging his eye laz0r with sun rays...just how much energy do you think yo ucan harness from sunlight from earth with a small surface area? lol
The average thunderclap is about 120 decibels, but it can vary with the distance from the lightning. The thunderclap decreases by 1 decibel every 26.666 meters you're away from the lightning. The thunderclap decreases by 37.5 decibels every kilometer you're away from the lightning. If you're about 26.666 meters away from the lightning, the thunderclap is heard about 119 decibels. If you're about 1 kilometer away from the lightning, the thunderclap is heard about 82.5 decibels. If you're about 2 kilometers away from the lightning, the thunderclap is heard about 45 decibels. If you're about 3 kilometers away from the lightning, the thunderclap is heard about 7.5 decibels. If you're more than 3.2 kilometers away (or 2 miles) from the lightning, you can't hear the thunder anymore. Someone should be within 3.2 kilometers (or 2 miles) from the lightning to hear the thunder.
Have you guys ever tackled Metamorphosis? Shape-Shifting like Mystique/Martian Manhunter, Body Elongation like Mr. Fantastic/Plastic Man, Changing from one substance to another like Colossus/Metamorpho, Merging two minds into one like Firestorm... I don't remember if you've ever covered any of these elements of metamorphosis before, but the one that has me most curious is Firestorm sharing one body between two minds.
I have a question... Does Wolverines "Logans" skin flake and shed? Humans shed up to 0.003 ounces of skin an hour. Roughly 1.6 pounds a year. With Wolverines healing factor, is the skin shedding accelerated or decreased....If not stopped all together?
Dependents on his mutation.... If his healing is caused by longevity of cells or by a rapid increase of cell division. Given that his powers are focused on regeneration which demands rapid increase of cells, i would say he increases.
Wolverine's healing powers would also not work as it does in the comic and movies, since matter can't be created nor destroyed, so for his body to 'regenerate' he has to take in more mass for his cells to have something to work with, it'll be fine for small nicks and bruises but when an arm is torn off, that arm's mass has to be created by his healing factor using his body's energy.
He should not shed at all, since he would never have any bad skinflakes or skin tissue, it would be regenerated to be perfect at all time, hell he would not sweat either since the regeneration from his body would regulate the temperature too.
I think you need to do a part two on this one. How hard would The Hulk have to smash his hands together to create the different levels of his thunder clap. Also, are there materials that can withstand that each level of pressure.
Black Bolt's power is not about sound but electromagnetic energy. His voice only trigger the effect, louder he screams more intense is the energetic discharge.
What about a Hulk Snap? Like he snaps his fingers and creates a smaller pressure wave. May not kill, at least not fellow heroes. Just don't let him into any beatnik poetry slams... Great episode btw, one of my new faves!
I just realized that in the 2008 Hulk movie, the Hulk knew that the thunder clap would work to put out the fuel fire, because in the university fight he was being shoved around by the Stark Industries sound cannons.
After seeing this video, I recalled the pistol shrimp, one of the loudest creatures in the sea, snapping a specialised claw to create cavitation bubbles to kill prey, from what I read, the sound produced is about 218 decibels, the bubble reaches speeds of up to 100km/h about 4cm from this claw, as it collapses, the bubble creates sonoluminescence and can reach temperatures of 4,700 Degrees celsius, estimated surface temperatures of the sun are around 5,500 degrees celsius as a comparison, this things just a shrimp, but hey its real and thats kinda scary to think about :P
The thunderclap happened with actor Edward Norton, The Incredible Hulk, not Eric Bana on The Hulk movie. And yes the matter has to come from somewhere everytime, if he did he would float like a balloon or collapse... I think.
Mass can be destroyed. E=MC^2. Banner's body stores Gamma Radiation and then coverts that energy into the mass needed to become Hulk, and make his pants stretchy.
+thirdbase314159 Yeah... E = mC^2 isn't saying that matter can be destroyed. It's saying that matter and energy are the same thing and that they are both conserved.
As we know and we have talked about before E=MC^2 so energy and mass are somewhat interchangeable. That being said gamma radiation has A LOT of energy and if that is stored within him the release of that energy could, in theory, grant him enough mass to grow? no?
Dude, Banner's body should then store cca. 200 times more gamma energy than what the Tzar bomb released. That is hundreds of billion of modern electric car battery worth of energy. No way he can store that. Without some fictional extradimensional source of energy it can't be done according to what we know of physics today.
The problem is, the "exchange" of energy and mass works in both directions. The energy stored in him would also has to "weight", it can not create additional mass. It is better to think of it the other way around, mass is a measure of the energy stored in a system.
A tail wouldn't help him lift off the ground. He would either have to have massive wings, like 3-4 times his size or not having a feathered wing, and instead have one like the Wasp.
6:52 Maybe the hulk becomes bigger b/c his body acts like a fusion reactor, the oxygen he gets form the air gets turned into larger elements which can also creates energy so that also explains where he gets his energy.
wouldn't the Thundercloud at the same distance that it was portrayed in the MCU Hulk movie? Would the Thunderclap have killed General Ross and Betty Ross?
Well, I don't think he's regularly practising it. It might just have been his first time to use it and he wasn't angry at the fire or anything to use his full strength. That's my headcanon anyway, maybe he was just lucky that the clap was just strong enough to blow out the fire, but not loud enough to rupture eardrums.
In case your wondering because it wasn't clearly stated... Yes sound can blow out a fire. put a candle next to a subwoofer and play some bass if you don't believe me.
Linksys120n I've done that before. I'm even done it with a row of candles and turn up the volume. It was cool because the stronger the base got it would knock out the next candle in the lineup.
The Hulk has self control. It's the people in the Marvel world who portray him as a monster. Hulk fights for good and has shown his self control in the comics.
Fun fact: Hulk's thunderclap redirected a universe ending blast and the result of this was the dimension hulk was in was completely destroyed. This means that hulk's thunderclap can reach a point in power where he can destroy the universe with it.

5 years late, but I’ll guess around the speed of breaking the sound barrier or a hypersonic jet or anything faster, he’s moving so fast the molecules become a shock wave
In the Ang Lee movie, it's shown that the Hulk can actually absorb energy from his surroundings, right? that's why the lake freezes as he becomes bigger. Its also shown how he disperses the energy back when Betty calms him down in the city, he seems to be releasing a lot of heat as he's getting smaller.
I vaguely remember it being explained in the comics that he draws gamma radiation from a micro dimension (like the Quantum Realm or something), so I guess he's converting energy to mass? And vice versa when he transforms back into Banner? I guess this also explains his regenerative ability. Infinite energy=infinite mass= infinite (and insanely rapid) cellular division= infinite tissue repair.
The explanation of the Hulks mass (where does it come from?) was told to me by someone who used to work for Marvel. Though I don't think it was ever written down in any comic book he supposedly gets his mass from Dark Matter. When the Hulk Hulks out his body is actually gathering Dark Matter into his body. That is why the angrier he gets the stronger he gets. He just keeps gathering the Dark Matter into his body making him stronger and stronger.
I don't know about how much you'd need to train to preform it, but to perform it, no amount of training will get you anywhere near the strength required.
Hey man, kudos to every videos you make, especially your intro and outro. It is soo catchy and is just like butter chicken to a hungry mind. Of course the content you provide is absolutely fabulous to ponder upon. Keep up the good work!
Could explain the extra mass through the use of Pym particles, or alternatively some underlining force field that could vastly increase the buildup of neutrinos. The mass then stops increasing, straight up converted to energy to increase strength up to a billion times.
The numbers in dB might seem small but they are quite big if you remember that it is a logarithmic unit. The most common reason for using such a unit is because the numbers would quickly get absurdly big if you didn't. So 300 dB is actually a crazy high number.
Saidin Rage Not sure how true it is, but I found this: "There is no noise decrease or sound drop per meter. We get a sound level drop of 6 dB per doubling of distance. Sound power or sound power level has nothing to do with the distance from the sound source" Being too lazy to rewatch the video, I'll say Thundersmash is 400 dB when standing 1 meter away from Hulk. From there, it'll be 394dB at 2 meters, 388dB at 4, etc. 400/6 ~= 67 2^67 = 1.48 * 10^20 m So, that means it would reach 0 dB after that distance, or did I do something wrong? Because that distance is about 16 000 lightyears
Thunderclap is 300dB at 1m 300 / 6 = 50 The sound has 6dB removed 50 times The distance doubles 50 times 1 x 2^50= = 2^50 2^50 metres = 0.12 light years Ten times the distance Voyager 1 has travelled
movecount The only argument I have against that is he's not turning everyone around him into a Hulk when he reverts. ...maybe the real enemy of the Avengers isn't themselves or some other cosmic force. Maybe it's cancer.
that makes no sense. when cells multiply they still depend on nutrition and proteins. if anything, hulk would be weaker than Bruce banner, not stronger.
it's gamma radiation that quickly turns from energy to mass that turns Bruce into hulk plz like if you agree so that maybe nerdist will see it and maybe we will get a because science on it.
at the end, the extra mass : simple theory, if you ignore Stan Lee's actual explanation as to why he is green. Trees (most plants) don't actually take most of their biomass from the ground as people tend to think, they take it from the air. That's why the ground around them mounds up rather than sinking down into the ground as it is depleted. So maybe he's green because he's doing to the same thing when he expands.
One way the Hulk's extra mass has been explained in a few comic books, and shown in the Ang Lee movie, was via water/moisture absorption and expulsion.
Will Burns OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH to much... ok
As I understand it, the hulk gets his mass by pulling the water out of the air, and then expelling it as he shrinks down, as shown in Ang Lee's movie, at the end. You'll see the street become wet as he shrinks.
A possible answer to the "where does Hulk's mass come from" Is simply the gamma radiation that created him. Matter and Energy are simply two different states of the same substance (if I remember correctly) So maybe something within Bruce Banner stores all the energy/radiation that affected him, and whenever he becomes hulk, his body taps into that energy, converting it into matter. Whenever he reverts to Bruce Banner, the matter/mass is converted back into energy and thus stored again.
Not just that but he causes a shock wave by mere force of his strength, which in turn similar beings have done but with him it's a mainstay ability he does, while Black Bolt just emits it as his ability.
What would happen to the hulks ear drums at that pressure?? and also maybe when hulk gets emotionally stressed, the signal from his brain saying he is distressed ignites a code in his brain changing how his blood or body in general reacts with certain gases in the air. and when his stress level gets below a certain level it douses that code changing back his bodies physical properties.
I’m curious how much power was in his clap in the 2008 Incredible Hulk film when he put out the fire just as it ignited the fuel of the helicopter. Like pretty sure with current tech it’s not efficient to put out fuel fires with wind/sound. So if it was real how much damage would that cause to the surrounding areas and the people
There was actually one comic panel where banner adressed the creation of mass buing impossible when. He was typing some math relating to this into a compute to try and find how his and Giant Girl's powers worked, when a lighting bolt caught by Storm on the roof plus the practice drois spiderman and cap were fighting a few floors below combined with bruce's math to create Vision. Not sure which comic line that was.
Wait if thunder is 215dB then how do some people survive getting struck by lightning. Even if the electricity itself doesn't kill the person wouldn't the shockwave from the thunder explode the person's lungs like Kyle said? Or does the lightning's thunder just have less decibels as it gets closer to the ground.
Addressing the closing ramble: Maybe the mass of the Hulk is stored as energy somehow when he's Bruce Banner. Matter can be "destroyed" and converted to energy in a matter-antimatter explosion, so the reverse must be true as well.
Just more tips about sound: 300db can also blow out concrete walls 300 miles away. 500db is so loud, it could create a crater 12 miles wide and 1 mile deep, and possibly blow debris into space. 1,100db can actually create a black hole larger than the known universe.
Now that we're on the subject of sound, I wouldn't mind an episode about Black Bolt. So, how can he channel his own electrons and sound particles into body parts for the "master punch?"
Kudos to whoever mixed the "bust-eardrums" noise. They really captured the tone of tinnitus.

"Kyle" just hit him with you hammer like you did in avengers
Uh... You mean in the Edward Norton Hulk movie. In the Eric Bana "Hulk" he never used the thunder clap. Just an FYI Merp!
imagine if the hulk come to a wedding and everyone start to clapping
Is there not a max possible dB? Before air would ignite? Or even beak all O2 or any molecule.... LHC
I wonder what's the dB of supernovas...
TiagoTiago 0, there's no air in space
Ricardo Becerra watch the video by Vsauce3. it's about fus roh dah.
Ricardo Becerra 1100 decibels would destroy the entire universe.
Almost as loud as my dog when mating
The explanation of the Hulks mass (where does it come from?) was told to me by someone who used to work for Marvel. Though I don't think it was ever written down in any comic book he supposedly gets his mass from Dark Matter. When the Hulk Hulks out his body is actually gathering Dark Matter into his body. That is why the angrier he gets the stronger he gets. He just keeps gathering the Dark Matter into his body making him stronger and stronger.
but how much do i Have to train to preform it
100 Push ups 100 Sit ups 100 Squats and a 10km run every single day.
Chovosky Jackson Let me get Back to you about that in like 15 years
colonel R Lol. I'll be waiting.
I don't know about how much you'd need to train to preform it, but to perform it, no amount of training will get you anywhere near the strength required.
colonel R 100 sit-ups and push-ups and a 10 mile run everyday
Hey man, kudos to every videos you make, especially your intro and outro. It is soo catchy and is just like butter chicken to a hungry mind. Of course the content you provide is absolutely fabulous to ponder upon. Keep up the good work!
With the new Rogue One movie coming soon....
Surprise lightsaber!!!!!
Could explain the extra mass through the use of Pym particles, or alternatively some underlining force field that could vastly increase the buildup of neutrinos. The mass then stops increasing, straight up converted to energy to increase strength up to a billion times.
So... thunderclap seems to be the most realistic power ever... (because the numbers are small)
Rafael P. P. Hulk strength sounds completly unrealistic consodering the thunder clap is the equivalent of an atomic bomb,or several atomic bombs.
Vlad the Impaler I'm not talking about Hulk... I'm talking about thunderclap itself...
The numbers in dB might seem small but they are quite big if you remember that it is a logarithmic unit. The most common reason for using such a unit is because the numbers would quickly get absurdly big if you didn't. So 300 dB is actually a crazy high number.
300dB in actual numbers is 10^30 ie 1 followed by 30 zeros. Its a crazy high number.
One of my personal favorite YT series, i hope it never ends!
So if the Hulk did his loudest clap, how far would it audibly travel?
About 3 feet.
wtf happened to spreading over a mile in every direction?
He is joking lol
Saidin Rage
Not sure how true it is, but I found this:
"There is no noise decrease or sound drop per meter.
We get a sound level drop of 6 dB per doubling of distance.
Sound power or sound power level has nothing to do with the distance from the sound source"
Being too lazy to rewatch the video, I'll say Thundersmash is 400 dB when standing 1 meter away from Hulk.
From there, it'll be 394dB at 2 meters, 388dB at 4, etc.
400/6 ~= 67
2^67 = 1.48 * 10^20 m
So, that means it would reach 0 dB after that distance, or did I do something wrong? Because that distance is about 16 000 lightyears
Thunderclap is 300dB at 1m
300 / 6 = 50 The sound has 6dB removed 50 times
The distance doubles 50 times
1 x 2^50= = 2^50
2^50 metres = 0.12 light years
Ten times the distance Voyager 1 has travelled
Elastic pants and of course he draws from gamma energy?
where does hulk's mass come from? seems simple enough..his cells are multiplying and expanding
So what happens when he changes back?
wolfpax181 They get released from his body as gamma radiation since when his anger dissipates, so does his radiation-producing body.
movecount The only argument I have against that is he's not turning everyone around him into a Hulk when he reverts. ...maybe the real enemy of the Avengers isn't themselves or some other cosmic force. Maybe it's cancer.
he could just spread radiation gg
that makes no sense. when cells multiply they still depend on nutrition and proteins. if anything, hulk would be weaker than Bruce banner, not stronger.
I wanna know if it's even possible to clap that loud haha
it's gamma radiation that quickly turns from energy to mass that turns Bruce into hulk plz like if you agree so that maybe nerdist will see it and maybe we will get a because science on it.
at the end, the extra mass : simple theory, if you ignore Stan Lee's actual explanation as to why he is green. Trees (most plants) don't actually take most of their biomass from the ground as people tend to think, they take it from the air. That's why the ground around them mounds up rather than sinking down into the ground as it is depleted.
So maybe he's green because he's doing to the same thing when he expands.
I just realized that he has to write backwards
Coussar Wafa Same diffrence
No he writes normally and then the video is flipped afterwards
Holy shit I get it! Please nobody comment about this anymore!
its not flipped
Dawson Retter Its still flipped
One way the Hulk's extra mass has been explained in a few comic books, and shown in the Ang Lee movie, was via water/moisture absorption and expulsion.
Kyle can you help me with math homework?
I feel like someone is holding a peice of paper for him to read
How loud is the Hulk's thunderclap? Loud enough to cut Kyle's hair :)
Will Burns OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH to much... ok
It isn't cut, it's in a pony tail.
Capt Flea that was the point. Kyle's hair is a trademark look and it would take the force of Hulk's Thunderclap to get it cut.
Parents: Thunder is just sound, it can't hurt you.
Kyle: Well first off...
Who's Hulk
ScrubLord OverLord wtf dude
ScrubLord OverLord yo i'm hulk! how u doing?
ScrubLord OverLord 😂😂😂😂. that's right.
incredible
As I understand it, the hulk gets his mass by pulling the water out of the air, and then expelling it as he shrinks down, as shown in Ang Lee's movie, at the end. You'll see the street become wet as he shrinks.
is kyle always writing backwards?
He never does.
AvionAwsome he writes normally then they flip the footage
A possible answer to the "where does Hulk's mass come from" Is simply the gamma radiation that created him. Matter and Energy are simply two different states of the same substance (if I remember correctly) So maybe something within Bruce Banner stores all the energy/radiation that affected him, and whenever he becomes hulk, his body taps into that energy, converting it into matter. Whenever he reverts to Bruce Banner, the matter/mass is converted back into energy and thus stored again.
Wasted a superhero loudness theme. Shoulda done Black Bolt, MUCH STRONGER than hulk clap.
They should do that as well. But Hulk was the natural choice because everyone's familiar with Hulk. Only comic readers know who Black Bolt is.
Xenomorphy thing is, blacbolt's powers are not entirely sound-based and involve electron manipulation, other than that he sure is louder than the Hulk
Xenomorphy yessss. dude way better. can someone tag him in this?
Not just that but he causes a shock wave by mere force of his strength, which in turn similar beings have done but with him it's a mainstay ability he does, while Black Bolt just emits it as his ability.
SuperShanko and do you know how powerful it is?????
Hulk Bass
HULK...DROP DA BEAT!!!
(Black bolt whispers...) "Heads pop"
(Black bolt roars) "Bodies explode"
NOOOOOOOOOO!!!! WHAT HAPPENED TO YOUR HAIR??? Kyle? :'(
ah never mind, you just bound it together on your neck... you made me have a heart attack Kyle!
Telsion same for me.
Telsion he looks like Thor lol
Elias Rammah thats why, he shouldnt hide it
Telsion ikr
Even though there isn't oxygen in space. I wonder how loud a star going supernova would be.
So if it was real how much damage would that cause to the surrounding areas and the people
Hulk says, "Hulk smash" but he's incredible. I just find him hard to believe.
I heard the official reason Hulk grows and gets stronger is because he pulls in the ambient gamma rays around him.
4:40 "Spread out over hundreds of thousands of miles"
He slipped! He said miles instead of kilometers! I'VE GOT YOU NOW! MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
to be honest, I would think it might be less "explosive sound" and more "almost-vaccum"
see: Mantis Shrimp
In Incredible Hulk #126, his Thunderclap destroys an entire universe.
Heh, Kyle thinks that's the loudest Hulk could get. Let me introduce you to the World-Breaker-Hulk...
All Might has the power to throw a punch so powerful it can create projectile made of pressurized air.
Small details appreciation: they used the sound effect of "taking RADS" from fallout when they mention nuclear bombs :D I liked that.
Hulk vs. Hulk-sized mantis shrimp. GO!
I was hoping for an "Unexpected Hulk Smash!!!"
It would be awesome to see a live version of the Hulk doing his thunderclap in a grass field and seeing the fire surrounding him
Wait if thunder is 215dB then how do some people survive getting struck by lightning. Even if the electricity itself doesn't kill the person wouldn't the shockwave from the thunder explode the person's lungs like Kyle said? Or does the lightning's thunder just have less decibels as it gets closer to the ground.
Awww, you should've mentioned the 1883 explosive eruption of Krakatoa! I believe that was the loudest sound in recorded history.
i wonna now see hulk clap in a field of grass and a wave of fire appears.
And no, it wasn't the Bana movie, it was Edward Norton. I too really laughed at that scene...
That deafening effect was so good and realistic, it brought up some sort of traumatic sensation for me.
This guy never watched the bass cannon putting out a fire. The fire was put out without smashing anybody's eardrums.
Addressing the closing ramble: Maybe the mass of the Hulk is stored as energy somehow when he's Bruce Banner. Matter can be "destroyed" and converted to energy in a matter-antimatter explosion, so the reverse must be true as well.
It was the Edward Norton version where he used thunderclap to put out the fire, not Eric Bana
Just more tips about sound:
300db can also blow out concrete walls 300 miles away.
500db is so loud, it could create a crater 12 miles wide and 1 mile deep, and possibly blow debris into space.
1,100db can actually create a black hole larger than the known universe.
woaah.. he writes perfectly mirrored and sometimes without looking. now THATS impressive.. sub earned
Now that we're on the subject of sound, I wouldn't mind an episode about Black Bolt.
So, how can he channel his own electrons and sound particles into body parts for the "master punch?"
I like how we learn, have fun and laugh at the same time.
