  • The Lord Of The Rings - Unreleased Scenes (2022 Compilation).
    22 years to the day that footage of Peter Jackson's The Lord Of The Rings trilogy was first revealed to the world on April 7th, 2000, this new and definitive compilation of almost every piece of unreleased and deleted material will hopefully contribute towards making the 25th Anniversary Edition a reality in 2026.

    Over 20 years later, there are so many fans willing to "do their part" in playing an active role in tracking down, recording, and preserving every scrap of knowledge they can about these films. You do it with your incredible familiarity with unreleased scenes and promotional photography, or even just the scenes that are rumored to exist. I've been doing it by creating screen-accurate saddles and tack for my horses and sharing my work for others to do the same builds, while I've got friends in the cosplay community who spend thousands of hours on costumes and armor indistinguishable to those worn in the films. I know people who work hard to archive old websites or blogs that have interviews from Weta artists or production crew in the early 2000s on topics ranging from Arwen's makeup to the Minas Tirith miniatures. Many of those early online resources are already lost forever, and more will vanish if we don't take action. As a professional archaeologist, I see this kind of fan labor as a form of archaeology as well: we need to preserve this "cultural heritage" of the Lord of the Rings for our children and grandchildren, so that not only the films but the knowledge of HOW they made the best trilogy of all time will last forever.

      @@Wayzor_ I own the extended boxed sets and have watched everything on them dozens of times (I'm a bit obsessed). A lot of the content here, both footage and photos, cannot be found there. For instance, many of the photos were only released in advertising campaigns from 2000-2002, or the Making of the Lord of the Rings feature by Costa Botes contains a lot of footage never seen in any of the DVD releases. The image of Éowyn and Faramir at their wedding was only released recently by Miranda Otto on Twitter. Fans had heard rumors that such a scene had been filmed, but we never saw any proof of it until she posted the photo in April 2019.

To hear Peter Jackson say that they did film a lot of certain scenes (like a young Aragorn and Arwen when they 1st met) and that they just never made it into any kind of cut has had me salivating just to see those damn scenes for so long now. Jackson even jokingly says that maybe they'll put them into a 50th Anniversary box set or something LOL fingers crossed we don't have to wait till 50

    • @bjakeijzer

      One of the few things I don't like about the movies is the way Sauron's death scene is handled in Fellowship. Wish they'd actually shown him fighting Elendil and Gil-galad. I understand why it was cut for narrative expedience though.

    • @ThatOtherGuyOverThere
      @ThatOtherGuyOverThere 2 ปีที่แล้ว +82

      You mean that Sauron being an arrogant, near all-powerful asshole on the verge of victory ISN'T enough of an explanation as to why he would want to kill the son of one of his greatest enemies with his bare hands? And that's without taking into account that he had just killed Gil-Galad, a legendary elven king, with his bare, burning hands.
      It's not a plot hole, or contrivance, or convenience. It's characterization.

    • @bjakeijzer

      @@ThatOtherGuyOverThere But then it only works if you go into it already knowing all the lore. A new viewer who has never even heard of Gil-Galad or all that other stuff will only see a large armored dude reaching out his hand to this son of the king.

    • @ArdaUnhail
      @ArdaUnhail 2 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      For movie perspective it would strenghten the reasoning of the decision Sauron took reaching Isildur like that is his signature move but for bookwise, actually Gil-Galad and Elendil wore down Sauron in the cost of their lives and Sauron fell down with them. Isildur then, just cut it from the hands of the unconscious Sauron, maybe only materialized or alive by the power of his ring at that moment. So, either way, the approach they took has flaws but for movie i think it is just right.
      In a saga opening intro scene no one knows who the hell is Sauron, Gil-Galad, Elendil etc. so they only put on screen that some evil god-like creature was over confident and paid his arrogance dearly.

He said a lot of it is good and just too much for a movie to be watchable. Some TH-camrs have suggested editing that footage into a Snyder Cut style miniseries with a season for each movie. I would totally watch that. I'm not sure if WB is allow to release it as a show, however, since Amazon has the TV rights, but it would be so great if they could. We are coming up on the 25th Anniversary and a 30-40 hour super cut made into a miniseries with remastered footage and updated CGI for the scenes that need it would be an amazing way to celebrate.

    Thanks for this video, there's some stuff in here I'd not seen before. Most fascinating is seeing the Witch King before they re-shot his scenes with the new helmet in 2003. Totally different in terms of tone and menace!
    I can only imagine somewhere in the New Line Cinema vaults that there is a lot of footage in the can that may one day see the light of day. Fingers crossed for a new cut for the 25th anniversary :)

    Wow! Watching this in 2022 is a pure treat, especially when we have such other utter abominations being pushed elsewhere under the guise of paying homage to this most transcendent of IPs. True labor of love on display here. Thank you!

    • @philippalinton5850

      If we want to talk about abominations, I am really thankful that two sequences were dropped: Arwen at Helm's Deep, and Aragorn versus Sauron at the Black Gate. Tolkien would have hated both of those concepts, as do I. The films are great, but let's not forget they have a lot of changes from canon - some of the changes are fine, but others are really not.

      @@philippalinton5850 Nothing Petey did even comes _close_ to "Big Stick Swingin' Galadriel" and Don Lemon, elf extraordinaire. I am giving credit where credit is due, and I am excoriating where nefarious gilding is taking place.

      @@philippalinton5850 Remember that they did remove it because it didn't make sense and Tolkien would have hated it. I don't like either of those scenes, and apparently they didn't either. You make it sound as if they boasted about how amazing those ideas were. They were cut because the Arwen thing got too complicated and the Sauron thing wasn't what Tolkien wanted, and also distracted from Frodo and Sam. They came up with the idea, tested it out and trashed it.

    • @philippalinton5850
      @philippalinton5850 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gianna526 and yet there are other scenes left in that Tolkien would also have hated, eg Faramir trying to take the Ring to his father, dragging Frodo and Sam to Osgiliath, allowing his men to beat up Gollum, Gandalf hitting Denethor, Frodo believing Gollum over Sam and sending Sam away.
      Personally I don't mind the Elves at Helm's Deep but Tolkien would not have approved.
      To be clear, for me the good outweighs the bad in PJ's LotR. And none of this justifies whatever Amazon does - although it's possible that RoP might not be as bad as the Hobbit films. 👀

      I would argue it's not necessary. The personal risk is already reflected in Bilbo's early dialogue, and Smeagol. Would have probably been remembered as an awkward scene more than anything.
