    Leave it to Mr. Dykes to review the Type-R with civility & humility. "Leaving the track day diaries to other channels" and the racing to "more qualified people." And only Alex's "First Drive Reviews" are more thorough than other reviewers.

    Alex, as always I really like the review. Anyone over 25 yrs. old will look like they are driving their younger brother or son's car. Alex , can you drive this car down to HWY 198 A.K.A. Death Curves and
    video the handling. If HWY 198 looks too scary, try HWY 25 South bound from Tres Pinos. If you do go down there, stay alive, I do want to see your reviews every Friday. :)

    Am I in a minority group of car enthusiast where I feel a wingless Civic Hatch looked Bad?
    Base wingless Civic Hatchbacks look to be missing something in the back of the car..
    Why does the Type-R gets all these hates from the spoiler, while EVO and STI can go without much complain

    I understand the anti-spoiler comments completely. But this is a Devil Be Damned automotive choice...the wing is functional, and even those tiny little shark fins over the rear hatch serve a purpose. As a 62 year old driver, however, I definitely understand the anti-spoiler comments. :-)
    Alex refrained from the almost obligatory 0-60 run with the driver's hands off the steering wheel, and correctly pointed out that you can still get some torque steer feel if you're accelerating out of a corner. I'm glad he spent some time explaining the difference in the front suspension and how this affects torque steer, because this is one of the more expensive design changes for the CTR, and Honda are rightly proud of the design.
    All in all, I think he did a good job with this. He's clearly not your typical Honda "fan" of this type of vehicle, but he was fair and dispassionate, and explained the faults and foibles as well as the assets.

    • @GeorgeKnighton
      @GeorgeKnighton 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ha ha ha ha.... :-) I'm surrendering that point. The reason black is proving to be the most in-demand CTR is because that color effectively disguises all of the silly black plastic inserts.

    The haters are going to hate. I got to spend some time behind the wheel and found it a blast to drive, comfortable, tons or rear seat leg room and a huge space to put stuff under the hatch. The visbility out the rear is no problem even with the big wing. I'm an old geezer and would glady have a type r. It hauls ass too.

    I love the crazy styling, it's possibly the most beautiful production car ever made. From the negative comments, I'd say it's definitely not for conformists, introverts, self conscious types, or just folks who feel old at heart. Maybe I've played Mario Kart WAY too much, or maybe I just don't have the "grow up and be sensible" gene. This was a fine review video, thanks.

    It's a little over the top but I'm a lot more forgiving to flamboyant aggressive styling if it's functional. An option to have a clean factory removal of the wing and other pointy bits would solve most of people's hang ups. But Honda won't do that. Honda isn't a big fan of options.

    Awesome review. This is pretty much everything I am looking for in a car (manual, hatchback, reliable, relatively quick, fun to drive, around $35k (if I wait longer or search hard enough). The only downsides IMHO is the boy racer appearance and the wheel/tire setup (great for track/bad for pothole infested roads). I would also be hesitant to only have a flat repair kit as opposed to a spare tire.

    This car is awesome and an impressive feat by Honda to be able to make a competitive FWD car in an AWD market. The rear end look however is disappointing. The non Type R Hatch is already ugly enough. I wish they could have made this in the sedan version.

    Interesting that he mentions that, since the 2018 Accord will need this much power to compete with the 300+HP Camry V6

    • @aoescool
      @aoescool 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nissan TitanWarrior well from what it looks like Honda decided to lower the hp to 250..but the torque is up to 280 and its going to be lighter than the camry.. so expect a very zippy car.. personally I like the v6 and the coupe which Honda decided to kill for this year.. but at least all cars will have a manual transmission

    • @InvestBetter.

      Nissan TitanWarrior the new accord will smoke the new camry 😍 , why? Because my audi TT 2.0t 2012 smoke the v6 370z and g37 is350 now days is the turbo rules wait and see the new accord

    • @rusack7174
      @rusack7174 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Neither the Camry or Accord are considered "performance" cars. If you look around you about town and take an accounting of the kinds of people who choose these cars, racing around is probably the farthest thing from their minds. By virtue of the turbo in the Accord however, it may be able to provide more grunt where drivers of these cars usually drive them.

  • @djoetma
    @djoetma 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The reason it doesn't have 4WD is simply because this is a FWD car and that's what they aimed the development on. Many cars hat are AWD could be 2WD, but aren't. So the arguments Alex is posing are simply incorrect. Honda didn't want it to be a rally-canon-for-the-road or anything. It's a racer not a crosser. Something like that. Honda does F1 and WTCC, not WRC.
    It's also supposed to be a proof of what a FWD can be as a sporty car, and currently it's the fastest FWD on the Nürburgring.
    Well, market wise, is this a smart choice? One could argue that in this class people are looking for a rally-oriented car and thus would go for the Focus RS (even though that's way more expensive) or WRX STi (not sure about the prices in the US, but here it's waaaay more expensive because of taxes). But looking at the many Type-R fans out there (and I assume Honda did some market research), I guess there's still some animo for it.

    Honda skimped out on 4WD to lessen reliability issues, yet WRXs and STIs have always been 4WD and incredibly reliable. I think Honda just skimped out on 4WD to decrease costs for them and offer less value to consumer.

    • @ak4939
      @ak4939 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed. A compact version of the torque vectoring SH-AWD of Acura would have taken the Type-R to the next level. Honda skipped the AWD for cost reasons. A detailed mechanical review in a different site showed that there is built-in space under the Type-R to fit in an AWD system (aka Type-R is "AWD ready").

  • @matthewramirez4670
    @matthewramirez4670 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    When you are getting a type r you are not looking for Honda sensing or safety features like Lane assistant of start stop features or whatever you call those things your getting it for the performance and fun not to drive it like it's a Mercedes that just adding unessary weight to it. you wouldn't be needing these features If you knew how to drive...

    without the wing the type r would look pretty much exactly like the civic hatch. i like the differentation, but understand the stealth appeal of one without a huge wing. imo, honda got the aesthetics right with the civics (it's all subjective anyway). the one glaring ugliness though is the faux vents on the front and back. i was hoping the type r would make them functional but, alas, no.

  • @matts6551
    @matts6551 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    A message to Honda: lose the BS factory navigation and include heated seats and a spare tire. Jeez!!!! Who uses sluggish factory navigation anymore when u have apple/Android carplay. And with what I’m hearing about how thin these tires are, how could you not include a spare tire. After all this isn’t a stripped out racer, it’s a daily driver...which is exactly what u said to the public. If it were it wouldn’t have a backseat and would have rollbars like a GT3 RS.

  • @kelvinhii939

    Alex, the engine in this FK8 Type-R is not completely new, its actually the same K20C1 engine that's in the previous generation FK2 Type-R which is not officially available in the States. The new Type-R does have a different intake and exhaust system, and its tuned slightly higher than the FK2

  • @jasongorman1274

    I like the styling but would be somewhat embarrassed to own/drive one as a 40 year old working professional :) I would also downsize the wheels to 18's or 19's with all-season tires since it would be a daily driven car and we have freezing temps here in the winter time. This seems like a bargain of a car at MSRP if you can get one at that price (or lower). Hoping as supply meets/exceeds demand that I can pick one up at a decent price! :)

    I do miss the non electric parking break. I think for sport models they should not include that but then again car manufacture would have to re design a new chassis would that cos t way more? I do realize that the hatchback are built in the UK so I do believe they coupe / sedan are very different so the hatchback which are the sport S I and type R can be made differently with a hang parking break ! ????

    I would put up with the ugly design just for the performance. As for the ugly looks nothing a body kit can't fix.

    In all seriousness, I would sacrifice that tenth of a second gained on the ring time to loose the aero and gain a normal looking Civic with that powertrain. Ring times are such a joke to anyone who has every driven there. Way to many variable to comparable.

    Please review the new Civic Si !!! Thank you for all of your videos, Alex. I am currently between the Elantra sport and Civic Si, and a review from you on the latter would really help me make my decision. Thanks again!

    This car is not over the top. Nowadays all cars look the same. Finally there is a car looking like this! Remember how cars looked in the 50ies and 60 ies.

    Is there a wing delete option? I think if I were 10 years younger, the wing might be cool but at age 33, it's a little much for me.

    That is the most gaudy looking spoiler I’ve ever seen. It ruined that great car. Type R stands for Ridiculous.

    the golf R sucks, it looks the most boring standard car ever compared to its rivals, the civic type is an engineering masterpiece for its price and it looks outrageous.......and i love it

    Why didn't he step on it once!? What's the point of driving a car like that if you don't give it some boost even once!?

    Lose the transition lenses , its very strange to adress an audience with sunglasses on. If i didnt want to see this car so badly i would have immediately left this video based on the shades lol. Seriously though its very strange.

    Love it or hate it. It's becoming a legend. Even Chris Harris likes this car. He just did a review of it. The Golf R is quickly becoming forgotten because of the old age styling versus the Focus, Subaru and Honda.

      Exactly. This is one of those things you either love or hate. The alleged ugliness aside, all people who have driven it liked it quite a lot.

    I love the performance and Honda reliability but 16-22 year olds which it is styled for can't afford it.

      16-22 year olds really? look at all the old people driving F-1 cars that screams aero and kids love it
