Matt your ability to drive and talk at the same time without screwing either thing up still astounds me. I think you coined a new term today: "road mannerisms". Thanks for the great vid.
First off Matt, great driving, I never knew you were such a competent driver. Great honest review. If I was a betting man, I'd bet that Matt secretly wishes he owned a Type R rather than his Focus RS. I owned an RS for about 1 year, and he is right on, the RS suspension beats the crap out of you every time you drive it, and that's the reason I got rid of it. I had an extensive test drive in the Type R and could not believe how comfortable the ride was, very compliant soaking up the bumps without beating the crap out of you and loosening your fillings. The Type R also turned in better and had better handling overall than the RS.
It's so good on the street. I popped to the supermarket this morning. I had the radio on, pootled along, super comfy in the default R. The clutch is light but has the right amount of feedback. The shift light will have you in 5th at about 40 miles an hour. It's just great. Then you want to track it and it's fast. The grip in corners embarrasses faster cars. It's stable but will rotate when you want. The brakes are great. It's a hot lap marvel. For the money it wrecks the competition. Cars like the RS3 have a gorgeous interior and way more power which will thrash the Type R on straights, but the Type R will gain back time in the corners. The lap times are far to close for this to be considered anything other than a triumph.
That’s when a car feels quick on the street but you have time to think about what you’re gonna eat for dinner while going down the back straight at Road Atlanta
TheSmokingTire Haha, that's the best thing I read all day so far. I like the way you put it. I take it that in a Z06 you only have time to think about what condiment you want in your hot dog?
I love driving this car and can't imagine the smile i would have if i got to drive it on this track. Every time i drive it i just want to see what i can do and you can never do that on the streets without the fear of a cop being around the corner or waiting for you somewhere.
I have never been a Honda fan, never have never will. But I do have to give them props for what they have made here - a proper hot hatch after so many years of luke-warm offerings. Well done Honda. LOL a FWD family hatch lapping S2Ks and E46 M3s. FWD haters eat your words.
ldisc66 if the exterior makes it faster because of aerodynamics, how you call it ugly? If it performance is better how is that not a beauty? That uglyness is what I love about Honda... I use to hate Honda so much... And now even if I became a billionaire I would own 1... 1 stock. 1 super modded Shit I'll own every single one. NSX, s2k, a fit, a CR-V super tuned (spooned) and Civic.. definitely a Civic type R... Super tuned carbon fiber everywhere and make it RR edition as well! 🦄
I think Matt may have a stolen helmet, it kinda looks like he just snapped off the antenna's and painted it black. the helmet may have been owned by another alien driver, The Great Gazoo! ;D
Thanks Matt for your review of the Type R Civic. I was debating between the Type R and the RS. I'm gonna go with the Type R. Great review Matt, best so far for the new Civic Type R.
I have to say this cuz it's actually starting to bother me that so many people complain about the looks of this car... Is it bad that I actually love the way this car looks?!?! I'm in my 30's married with 2 kids. I own a V8 challenger and I'm thinking about making this my next car to buy. I've always had a thing for hatchback performers. Did I mention that I LOVE the way this car looks???
@Soario...hey i am with you. I saw this car in person at the central florida auto show and really like the styling and i am 44. This will be my next car as well but in champion white.
Soario7 yeah it’s bad when you can say the ford rs looks more like a civic then this type r which looks more like a cheesy wrx with to many busy lines going on
Sounds like a great upgrade compared to the Dodge. The Honda should last a lot longer and save you money on maintenance. And the type R will hold its value much much better than other Hondas. And, it will likely be the target of theft so might want to think about that as well. Consider an upgraded alarm and lojack.
Samuel Bowman Oh hey that's an original joke. It makes so much sense too. Buy bag of rice = driving the entire type-r range HA HA HA HA HA lmao dude good one
Psh fuck that AWD bullshit. You can convert it you Know that right? Have you seen a honda Civic AWD kick Subaru ass in rally racing? It's a real thing... And I as a big Honda fan prefer Fwd any day. Pros n cons to everything.... I love it when I look behind the mirror and smoke them with fwd... There faces 😳
Thankfully, looks are subjective. And how often do you use the "practicality" of AWD? I basically never find myself in a position where I need it. Then again, I've honestly never owned an AWD car.
I watched this video last night around 11:00 pm. After watching I hopped in my 18 Si and went and hit the twisties. It’s not a Type R but in the best out of the box Honda I’ve owned.
Great review. I'm a fan of the newer Type-r. I really appreciate all the engineering that went into this one. I think it looks great and would love to drive one one day
I would prefer 18 or 19 as the horrible roads in NY would surely ruin a lot of tires. They would be cheaper to replace if I got a bubble in the sidewall.
StevenSVT Just ordered two fronts tires this week actually for a friend and suggested it for them. Have you ever used any third party one that you could recommend?
MBisFrenchy I'm a service advisor for Cadillac. For our cars, we sale safeguard tire and wheel protection. They're the best so far... but really, I've done claims with other warranty companies and they cover, so no preference, really.
MBisFrenchy just remember, these extended warranty companies only warranty tires if you at least have 4/32 seconds left of tire tread. They don't cover if you hit a curb or if your tire is below tread depth
StevenSVT Thank You! In their case the tires were PSS tires with a lot of tread left. At the shop they said they would do only two tires at a time since it was a sports cars. Any truth to this?
I'm on my 3rd wrx and have NO plans of switching to Civic, But I appreciate the Type R more then many other sports compacts for some reason and the Ride is great. It does seem more matured, and evolved. Great video man.
@Michael Davis Same here. When you see it on screen you mostly think "this car looks weird/ugly". But seeing in person is really different. I guess it has to do with seeing the car among the others on the road, it just stands out; something we don't see from most other car companies today, everything looks the same...
It was awesome running into Matt on the paddock earlier in the day. Thanks for stopping to talk! You can see me and my friend posted up at 2:34 on the hill before the crowds went that far back. Can't wait for another Gridlife South next year, the last two were 10/10.
6:10 solid description of the Type R handling characteristics. The back end gets very lively when hard braking and trail braking , but I think that liveliness is what allows it to change direction so quickly. Unlike most FWD cars the back end of this car can come out. It has more oversteer tendencies than my rwd 300zx did.
Three wheeling! Haha. Comment reminds me of people autocrossing early 80's accords and lifting the inside rear wheel several inches off the ground. Those cars seemed to dance around the course on three wheels.
Very late to this party; but excellent driving on your part Sir Matt. Going to do an HPDE event this weekend; so your track line was much appreciated (and better I may add than the videos provided in my opinion). This car is a very capable beast. Would love to find one of these in 2023.
If you care how it drives, you wouldn't be concerned about how it looks. All you sissy nannies who want mustangs with live rear axles "because they looks cool, and i can do a burnout"
You read a lot of your own bias into that rubbiebubble. J Smith made no mention of the driving characteristics. Now my comment is that no matter how nice it drives, a car has to appeal to me aesthetically also, and this one is just scary ugly imo. But I have no doubt it's a blast to drive. It seems to have nice balance in a world where everything is oversprung and wants to be an M car wannabe. Kudos Honda tech team, not so much style department.
Dude Matt..........You are a beast......... excellent driving. I did not think the brakes would last that long on the track but your smooth driving paid off.
Thanks Matt... best review of the Civic Type R I have seen yet. I will keep this on my radar. In two years I will trade up from my Fiesta ST... but just not sure what yet.
Gonna be honest. I like the look. Reminds me up the EK9 in the rear. Is it the best looking civic? Nope (em1 forever) but in today's world it's alright in my eyes.
Matt this was a great vid!!! Really had me smiling the whole way through. That stock Type R was giving the business end of it tail pipes to some other cars that seemed a bit track prepared.
It is definitely faster than Focus RS in corners, tracks. In public roads RS will look faster due to the acceleration and it sounds better. If I had to choose, Type R for sure. Unlike some other haters the look has grown on me and it look wicked. I love it.
Your commentary is quite informative. The Integra Gen 1 B18C engine with turbo added is also a great combination. A car that revs to 10,000 rpm and pulls from 3500 rpm to 10,000 without any hesitation. On 30 psi it burns all the way to the top of 4th. With a T88 Turbbo and good fuel it achieves an easy and reliable 650 WHP driven daily with AC. Add a set of H&R coilovers with Bilstein, and a set of Brembos up front and it stops on a dime. This combination of suspension and brakes redefines the term "handles like it's on rails"
As an automotive journalist I got to drive this car at a track Press day at Monticello and loved it, I would go buy one tomorrow if I had the space. I will have a reviewed posted on my channel soon
10:58 - Except for the fact that the fastest time a Focus RS has managed around the Nurburgring is 8:06.29 and the Type R did it in 7:43.8 It's not "just about as fast", it's MUCH faster.
The Civic Type R is best at home on the track or a winding road. It isn't pretty to look at, but the engineering behind it (and stability for a FWD sports car) is worth admiring.
There are 3 in my city just 20min out of montreal,i raced a white one with great results :) i can say there is nothing to freak out about,it was stock and brand new but still mine makes less then 230whp and is still NA stock engine hahahaha
Andrew Cox they haven't left dealers for less then 55k and if you pay 55k for a civic when you can get a used NSX for that price your an idiot hell a used viper .
You could of taken that ZO6 Matt if this was a tighter track but those long straights needs more HP! But your driving skills are killing it on the track good work! 👍🏽 another good video
I might have already said this, but the UK model (not sure about the US one) has an anti-stall feature. You can just take your foot off the clutch and brake and it will pootle onwards :) This is what amazes me. I'd take the Type-R over an RS any day. Most of my driving is done on normal roads. I carried 2.5m of lumber home in mine. You put people in it and it's comfy, and then you push on through the back roads and suddenly it's this monster of grip and pace.
malkionx yes, see the “test notes” in video description. This entire video I had the heater on full crank to keep it from over heating. On a later session in the weekend, i has to drive with windows up and it was horrible
TheSmokingTire awesome thanks for the reply, was wondering if you suffered any of the 1st to second grinds some owners have shown with early cars?, even savage geese here on TH-cam had it happen during his review.
I really enjoyed the video and the track session. I thought it really showed the capabilities of the new Civic type R. Loved the commentary. Well made video. 👍👍👍👍👍
On the track it should be faster that the Focus RS due to the weight difference. If you look at the lap times on the Nurgburgring (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_N%C3%BCrburgring_Nordschleife_lap_times ): Civic Type R got 7:43.8s Focus RS : 8:06.29 that's quite a difference. On the other side in the Focus RS it is probably easier to manage and get a good lap time than the Honda.
Cold weather hot laps on the Ring more than likely. None of the owners in Canada that have tracked it have reported cooling issues. US based ones are a mixed bag. Depends on ambiance temps and seat time. Guys that are newer to the track probably weren't going 10/10ths tbh. So yeah more than likely people with as much experience on track as you as you will need some cooling upgrades! Edit: that said, everyone should take any Ring laptimes with a grain of salt...or maybe a whole shaker's worth. Us mortals wouldn't be able to replicate them that's for sure.
Never ever take manufacturer done laptimes of Nurburgring serious, it's one big marketing spiel with mods such as special compound tires and race suspension / geometry. Above you are comparing a car magazine time of the RS with an offical Honda time for the Type-R. Look up the official time of the previous Type-R and compare it with actual real world laps (people or magazines), and you'll find the official Honda time was never replicated. Trust me, Matt is correct in calling both cars equally fast in the dry, there's not much in them (coming from someone that has seen both cars on track). The question is though, with that RS rear-bias, which one are you going to have most fun in?
ZenzDeluxe for me the RS is a lot more fun on track. More precise steering, faster in the straights and the corner exits, better sounds, and opposite lock possible.
this gen of honda is fuckin amazing, i got a 17 civic coupe manual and i love it, fucking amazing comfortable light fast good handling drive, well worth the $ wish i could have got an SI though
Based af had the 17 Si and it was totaled just this April when i was rear ended at a stop by an suv going 65. Car took the hit like a champ for the most part. Im still alive! I stepped it up and got the 18 Type R, and the thing is a beast on the back roads. Matt was a little off when he said the drive modes dont vary much. From comfort mode to +R its a huge difference. Great all around car and a great DD
I own a fiesta st mainly because I watched your review I gave it a try and bought it, lately I've been contemplating into buying an rs, but I've been watching your videos and seems to me your not to enamored with the rs, as you where with the st, is that a true statement and if so would you recommend buying the type r instead? Like your reviews have a great one.
Love the BLNR GMT. I’m partial to the all black bezel. I think the Civic Type R at MSRP was the best solution for a fun daily driver. But good luck getting it at that price. I ended up going with a Camaro SS 1LE. Really happy so far. Keep driving hard, love the channel.
In the video, I had the windows down and it was super hot outside, so I forgot to mention that I had to have the heater on full crank to keep the needle out of the red during the entire video. In a later session, I had to run with the windows up, and I still needed to have the heater cranked, so it was like 150 degrees in the car and I felt like I was going to pass out.
I would love for Grid Life to have a north east event at Watkins Glen. Its almost a no brainer Watkins Glen has plenty of space for owners to camp since the majority of the NASCAR attendance camps there. The track just got repaved and facilities updates a couple years ago and the natural terrain of the road course its self makes for fantastic event for drivers. I'm sure it would draw in people from Canada, Ohio and all of New England that would like to attend.
Matt your ability to drive and talk at the same time without screwing either thing up still astounds me. I think you coined a new term today: "road mannerisms". Thanks for the great vid.

Matt - the guy to run a type-r at the limit on track, in traffic and maintain a coherent review of a new car. I loved this.
I just got my blue type r and I am so happy is unbelievable how I feel and this video makes me way more happy 😃 thank you Matt
I am glad you enjoyed that car. The Honda Civic Type R is one of the best FWD cars great for daily driving and track day.
Thanks Matt for your review of the Type R Civic. I was debating between the Type R and the RS. I'm gonna go with the Type R. Great review Matt, best so far for the new Civic Type R.

Nice review as always

As an automotive journalist I got to drive this car at a track Press day at Monticello and loved it, I would go buy one tomorrow if I had the space. I will have a reviewed posted on my channel soon
"Welcome to Road Atlanta."
LIKE.
You did an admirable job track driving while speaking in this video.
The car is so quiet like you don't even hear the engine at all
Beavey hell yeah that's what I dreamed about... Ninja quite...
Turbo engines are quiet
Probably couldn't hear the engine because Matt was speaking louder to try to overcome the wind noise as the drivers window was open
it's a directional lavalier mic; they are meant to soften outside noise as much as possible.
nighthawk0077 wrx turbos loud as fuck bruh
More videos like this, I think this was one of the best you ever did, good work.
12:52 that boxer rumble in front of you tho!
sounds like a wet fart
God I hope this car sells really well in the US market. We need Honda and other markets to know we still want manual sports cars.
Did Matt say 2007 Type R?
yup lol
Special edition
corrected his mistake straight away on the next shot
no shit.
Lol
Watched a few of your videos now and they are great. I really need to get my Type R to the track. Watching this was so much fun.
10:58 - Except for the fact that the fastest time a Focus RS has managed around the Nurburgring is 8:06.29 and the Type R did it in 7:43.8 It's not "just about as fast", it's MUCH faster.
Got to see one of these in Sydney. It's...quite imposing in person. Those guys at Honda are madmen!
7:22 that X1/9 tho
so cool
Joe Black definitively looks like it!
Favorite part of this whole video lol I really love what Honda did here bringing forced induction to their line up. But for $35k...nahhh
i would still put it on 19", 20 is just to big for a civic
FeelsBadMan Alot of hondas and acuras are starting to get 20's. The new accord gets them if you get the 2.0t.
i know, but i would still put it on 19" even Matt said it would be better on 18" but i think 19" would be a good balance between funktion and form
18's but I'd keep um clean.
I would put it on "15s, like back in the old days.
Mel Laknanurak lol the brembos wont clear on 15s...
Another great video that we’ve all been waiting for. The RS comparison comment made me grin. Give us a comparison/lap time video, please! Thanks
Scott Timmermans I never ran the RS at Road Atlanta but I ran a 1:45.1 in the CTR the day I shot this video
Great review Matt.... yeah , got one of these rice burners and its a daily!
I'm sure you've traded it in by now... Where I'd keep it FOREVER
The Civic Type R is best at home on the track or a winding road. It isn't pretty to look at, but the engineering behind it (and stability for a FWD sports car) is worth admiring.
the type r isn't a jdm only thing because we got them in Europe aswell
OEM Asian well, for American, there are two countries in the world, USA, and not-usa.
There are 3 in my city just 20min out of montreal,i raced a white one with great results :) i can say there is nothing to freak out about,it was stock and brand new but still mine makes less then 230whp and is still NA stock engine hahahaha
The first generation EK9 (1997-2000) was JDM only.
Ironically, the Civic Type R is made in England.
Wasn't that the ep3?
One of the best track videos I've seen .
Medium amount of balls for $35k is pretty good.
Andrew Cox they haven't left dealers for less then 55k and if you pay 55k for a civic when you can get a used NSX for that price your an idiot hell a used viper .
People are way too set to buy this car if they are actually paying that.
There are a bunch that have been sold at MSRP.
Tyler Hunt I just looked it up and there have been some sold at MSRP, which makes the fact that a lot of people are paying the mark up very stupid.
Oh for sure it's stupid. I'm mostly replying to brandon who's been spamming that shit on half the comment chains.
You could of taken that ZO6 Matt if this was a tighter track but those long straights needs more HP! But your driving skills are killing it on the track good work! 👍🏽 another good video
9:10 Like a BOSS
Thats visually the best track video on that beautiful course. Thanks.
6:45 "get by this little s2k"
Little? In a civic?
*googles new civic r curb weight*
Oh.
*sigh* modern electronics are heavy..
Modern electronics are lighter than ones from the 80's kid
There are just a lot more of them now.
ian connell yeah that's what i meant, should have worded more clearly.
Fckn awesome one take Matt!!! Now go smoke the two robs!! My $ is on you pal. Get it! 👍🏻👍🏻🇺🇸
Dizzy labs Matt is just a better driver, and I think that will come to matter
i thought the same, but they aren't driving, Justin Bell gonna drive, so it doesn't matter
It looks so so ridiculous and over styled and I love it
Ahhhhhh, finally the type R ☝️ take
Looks like the type r was killing it out there! Good job honda
On the podcast you mentioned it overheating, was that at this track?
malkionx yes, see the “test notes” in video description. This entire video I had the heater on full crank to keep it from over heating. On a later session in the weekend, i has to drive with windows up and it was horrible
TheSmokingTire awesome thanks for the reply, was wondering if you suffered any of the 1st to second grinds some owners have shown with early cars?, even savage geese here on TH-cam had it happen during his review.
malkionx no, although in this whole video you only saw me use 3rd, 4th and 5th. No 2nd or first here.
The issue did not come up on the street drive.
TheSmokingTire okay thanks for your insight keep up the awesome work!
It’s about time! Watching it now!
Any gear grind?
rpiian not for me
its a brand new car..
Dylan Marteen Go watch savagegeese’s Type R gear grind vid. th-cam.com/video/5v_j9Ct2jrQ/w-d-xo.html
TheSmokingTire Good to hear - thanks Matt!
Sounds like gear grind at 10:10
Watching it blast all those other cars was a pretty good advertisement
LIsten to that s2000 :D:D
o ya
I miss my s2000 waaaaaah!!!!!!
On the other side in the Focus RS it is probably easier to manage and get a good lap time than the Honda.
ghp0518 I don’t see how it’s possible that the Type R did a full lap of the ring without over heating.
The question is though, with that RS rear-bias, which one are you going to have most fun in?
ghp0518 your full of crap just like this ugly ass crap R
Nothing like a Costco muffin and Matt driving a Honda for breakfast!
so mad that i went to vegas when gridlife came to atl.
You said it overheated quickly on the track during your podcast. No mention of it in the video, what's up?
In the video, I had the windows down and it was super hot outside, so I forgot to mention that I had to have the heater on full crank to keep the needle out of the red during the entire video. In a later session, I had to run with the windows up, and I still needed to have the heater cranked, so it was like 150 degrees in the car and I felt like I was going to pass out.
So you were playing "Car Sauna" in a moving Type R.
Type R isnt a JDM only thing, the UK has had them for nearly 2 decades. The EP3 Type R was even built exclusively in the UK, in Surrey.
CONFIRMED YOU LOVE HONDAS
Matt knows Honda’s are the building block of his views
No matter how you rice (slice) it, the Civic is a heck of a nice car for $35k.
Taco Pro again people your idiots read the Honda reports they haven't left dealer lots for less then 55k due to dealer mark ups
Lot's have been sold for MSRP.
brandon wright this comment is irrelevant now. Many are sold near or at msrp.
I'm sure it would draw in people from Canada, Ohio and all of New England that would like to attend.
in singapore it costs almost 200K. for this..
Ek Seng Ng 😆 GTFO! How much would an Aventador cost there?! That’s so sad.
NismoFinder aventador cost about 700k-1mil depending on the spec
kinda like china tax huh
In was in Singapore not too long ago. Was an experience. I loved how clean the roads were, lol. Oh, and the grilled stingray was delicious.
Mario Munoz yea..nice place to look at..hard to survive in
Dude!!!! Sick video!! Please more track videos, and do one lap without talking too, you are a great driver and it will be fun to see you concentrate
12:45 amazing boxer sound of BRZ!
Not one of the nicer sounds I've heard coming out of a boxer engine.....
Yeah, it sounded really rice
