Makes sense, esp. for performance cars. Back seat space, trunk space etc are all secondary after drive, handling, acceleration, steering, stability at high speed etc.

Honda really made an instant classic with this car and it is a classic that will last well into the future thanks to that Honda engineering. This is also a very important point because with cars going electric, drivers cars that look, sound and feel like this are going to be more and more rare. Great job with the review!
Thomas's review have become such quality, previously his tests were very limited, but now he is putting the cars under pertinent stress tests to see what lies under the surface of these cars. Not only fun, but very intelligent and purposeful review. I am back at this channel probably after one and a half years, and i am glad, how high quality his video quality and test parameters have become. Subscribed.

This is what I love about Autogefühl - the depth and the professionalism of the review. Allowing the testing to take time unlike other motorjournalists that rely on short clips stuffed with pointless jokes and sound effects. Another thing that I like about Autogefühl is the non-biased view on asian cars (i.e not being blinded by the Audi-BMW-cult).

Honda done a supreme job with this car! That's how you build a hot hatch in basic FWD form and with a manual transmission. Thomas is impressed eh?!!
Even in it's extreme anime look the car looks fantastic, naughty ( raunchy even ) and purposeful. Golf, RS3 and the like who prefer a more subdued looking vehicle would not be a fan of this car.
Not a lot to complain about with the interior, think it's well presented, spacious and the controls are intuitive enough to get your focus more on the drive/dynamics than with aesthetics.
R-00000 in time would fetch a good amount in return. Very well detailed review as always with Mr. Thomas! -- Hyundai i30 N-Series ( or new Veloster ) next? --

Review is awesome as usual and i like the change to have the performance feature at the beginning. The car has amazing performance but Honda was drunk designing this Civic. Sometimes too dramatic doesnt work. I think its too much on the exterior. Interior is nice. Golf R would be my preference in this class.

I agree. The design is atrocious. Looks as if a WiFi router and a Gundam had a baby.
R Mac Looks fantastic in my opinion. If you want a tedious looking box on wheels buy something like a Golf.

Nice review. I think the stylings a bit much, but at least it goes with the personality and capabilities of the car. If you get darker colors it tones it down, at least a bit.

Dr. John Dorian wollte eigentlich einen focus rs, aber weil ich einen hund habe hätte ich wenig platz wegen der hunde box, also kofferraum im RS ist kleiner als der in meiner fiesta ST, dann wollte Ich den leon cupra habe einen manuelen 290 und einen st mit dsg probegefahren beide echt super besonders im alten Performance pack mit den alten seitenschwellern, war aber doch zu "erwachsen und ernst" guck mein profilbild an ich bin halt noch nicht soweit 😂 vielleicht sogar nie 😉... spater kamm der type R raus, mir persönlich gefällt das styling, war echt happy das er fast identisch mit dem prototyp ist, und der wagen past zu mir, auserdem sitze, schaltgetriebe und der preis hat einfach gepasst. Fur einen so ausgestateten RS müsste ich fast 8000 mehr zahlen, ich weiss der hat allrad aber der type r kann auch sehr gut ohne. Das einzige was mir fehlt ist sound. Sorry fur mein deutsch falls da grammatisch was in die augen sticht 😉

I wonder how far they'd get if they would make a fast car like this one and still try to make it look like it's a decent car. But that would probably not be interesting for Honda to offer.
I do still think that would've made a better choice if they would make an Integra as well as a Civic and make the last one less sporty.
I'm sure I would love how this car drives, but I just can;t get over it's look. And I think that most people who do like the look, simply can't afford it.

I had a Ford Focus RS for about 1 year, but got rid of it because I could not handle the really horrible rough ride it had, even in normal mode.
Can you please let me know how the ride quality of the Type R compares to the Focus RS.
From all the reviews I've seen, they all say that the ride quality of the Civic Type R in comfort mode is very good, and not harsh at all, say compared to the Focus RS.
Cheers! Tbh I wouldnt go for the RS / R versions for everyday driving. As you said, it is too stiff. I d always go for the normal versions with the sports styling then

Great review Thomas. Sadly I think this is overpriced here in Australia. It's very close in price to a BMW M140i and I have to say I know which one I'd choose (M140i). If it were about 10-15% cheaper I'd certainly consider it. I was quite disappointed with the quality an finish of the interior when I sat in one at my local dealership. Also the exterior styling isn't to my taste but that's subjective.

Dear Autogefühl team am kind of addicted to tour channel very nice videos but some videos I have noticed like this one is due to cloudy weather the footage inside the car keeps varying based on Natural lighting conditions sometimes feels too dark. Ofcourse on sunny days video looks fine but could find a way to fix this. Lots of Love and Appreciation

The look is fine for the sports car segment. The only real design faux pas are the fake black grille "vents" which are ugly as sin (especially up close). They should have been functional vents.... for the Type R at least, but the bean counters won I'm sure.

US model has no blind spot monitor or adaptive cruise control. :( I'm ready to buy but concerned the 2019 is coming out soon with those features.

It is in North America but I think there is seating for 3 in the rear in Europe?
Type R in UK has two seats/seatbelts in the rear. I don't think it's different in mainland Europe.
Gotcha - I just knew that we had the cupholders in the middle of the rear seats so it wasn't possible for someone to sit there. I wasn't 100% sure about the belt configuration overseas...now I know. Thanks!
in English, you SINGULAR is same as you PLURAL. Southern US says you'all for PLURAL which is in fact more precise.

Why doesn’t Honda make a real entry level sports car instead of a civic with race mode. People would be tripping over one another to buy one.

Der Cupra ist deutlich alltagstauglicher, gerade natürlich als Kombi. Der Civic wäre mir ne Spur zu extrem, ich würde da eher den etwas gesetzteren Ansatz mit dem Cupra wählen :)

I have seen this car on the road and I have to say that it looks superb in the flesh. Unashamedly aggressive and purposeful I love it. To many cars today are boring and generic but this thing is truly eye catching. It scooping a fair few awards here in the UK so it obviously has the ability to back up the racy looks. Well done Honda.
This generation of Civic looks strange in photos but on the street its so damn futuristic and aggressive! have seen so many, and still want to give it another look when i see one drive by

Fantastic car and fantastic review. Well done Thomas. I test drove one in October 2017 at my local Honda dealer. Really impressed with the power & handling even in the wet. My daily driver is a Audi S4 so was impressed with the front wheel drive system. I was also surprised of the build quality of the interior, only thing that let's it down is the entertainment system. Honda was offering 5 year warranty, 5 years servicing for free and aa cover too.

Great review Tomas. I feel like you get the thinking behind why it looks the way it does. If they had toned down the looks, then those that complain about how it looks, would still end up buying a GTi or R. This is aimed at a sub segment of hot hatch buyer who wants something completely different to the norm. It’s unapologetic, and creates the “look at me” effect that it’s owners are after.

You know what would be incredible. Is if Honda dropped the link between the name Type-r and Civic and since they don’t make the Integra or S2000 anymore, they should make a new car that will combine the Integra, S2000 and Civic Type-r and just name that car....the Honda Type-r. It would be a stand-alone name. Kinda of like how Nissan dropped skyline and made GR-R a stand-alone name. The “Honda Type-R” would be a hit.
Technically its the best hothatch, best engine, gearbox, dampers, brakes... But the looks, you have to love it....
No the gear box is known for grinding when shifting plus there is a over heating problem with some.
@@cindysue5474 The grinding part isn't entirely true. I have own this car for almost a year now, and it the beginning I had this grinding problem. But as I began to "feel the car", this problem disappeared entirely. You just have to "feel your car". As for the overheating problem; haven't encountered that yet. But I live in cold Denmark, so maybe this helps.
it's such a dramatic work of art from any angle, I totally love the styling. Probably not for neurotic, civilized folks who pride themselves on being Normal. You can bet most folks were scandalized when Beethoven's 5th came out, as well.
What an awesome car! Love the looks, sharp styling and excellent performance. Wait until you see one in the metal before you comment. These cars have a real presence. In black it looks mean.

so far I've put 225 miles on my new type r,..and still haven't used 6th gear. Or comfort mode. Or R mode. Or the stereo. Why do I feel a Death Valley trip coming on this weekend? What a performance!
Very good engineerd car but design wise I like more the previous version, this one looks to much like a "Hotwheels" toy.
I think it's intended to be like midsize because Honda cancelled the Accord in Germany and in Finland for example. They had to "grow" the Civic. Great review Thomas, thanks!

I like it but when againt a 4 wheel drive car it can't keep up . My subaru 94 sti import would do a lot better that 0 60 in 6 secs

I love the look of it. So much better than the previous version. I think the crazy Type R wings and stuff suit this car a lot better than the old car.
Even if they did the unthinkable and made an EV Type R, it would probably be slightly too attention grabbing for me. I’d have the imaginary e-Golf R instead.

I just purchased a new 2018 (2 mile on it)Type R although the 2019’s are here. Everything this gentleman said is spot on. A mix of daily drivability and serious racing credos .Plus I payed what I feel was a reasonable price. $32,500. Not cheap, but way less than were priced here in Michigan. Dealers were upping the price $40,00 plus!. Give me a break. I have a 2017 ZL1 Camaro that was dynoed at 676 HP with the only mod being a Robo Fab cold air intake developed for the Camaro. I love the ZL1, but I love the Type are more for half the price. It really is something! Not a zero to sixty car, but the handling and mid range pull is wonderful. A roller skate in the apexes. What a balanced vehicle. I’m an old guy so the Zl1 is a-bit much. Great. But a bit much. I feel like Mario Andretti when driving the TypeR. Highly recommend it . Fun!

It is a real shame that Honda did not equip the Civic Type-R with their torque-vectoring SH-AWD, to sharpen it even further. The new Golf-R has an exact duplicate of Honda's SH-AWD, with the ability to send 100% of the rear-torque, to the outer wheels, for sharper turn-in, in curves. Hopefully, Honda will add the SH-AWD into the upcoming Type-R !

Are you kidding me ?... ;-) Ok, with my TAG Monaco, the extra strap in crocodile leather is higher... Many manufacturers have realized that supercars are too expensive and mainpy build for the rich. that is why many manufacturers are encouraged in producing fast hot hatches which the average bloke can have fun with and enjoy. People sell their Porsches to buy a Yaris GR. thank god manufacturers made this decision

Could have done without the spoiler. Gaudy... but I kinda like that. Love Honda engineering but aesthetic in recent years are a bit much. They make the best engines though.
It's cool and I would buy if I were rich, but not as my main car because there are better options, imo.
Nice review but the long ride at 100km/h in such a car made me literally fall asleep. It was begging to scream on the autobahn instead. Also did you notice that strange high-frequency whistle at sustained speed on the highway? It might give a headache on a long trip but otherwise it's a superb car and will be sought after in 20 years as the all-electric bs is going nowhere ;)
Thanks again for a comprehensive report. I think the styling especially the rear is very cluttered. Seemed to be designed a comity that were never introduced to each other? By comparison, the Megan RS has beautiful integrated styling, ... and superb suspension dynamics. ... and a beautiful engine!

Had the pleasure to drive this car around my workplace. Honestly, the looks is up to the individual. I grew to like it with time, but hands down this car is so freakin' good to drive. It makes you think back what driving is all about and not just sitting in the car being driven.
