    The lead vocalist is the only vocalist on the record. His vocals are layered. The drummer doing background in the video is just for show, as is the bassist on the drums and the vocalist/keyboardist on the bass.

      He's the choir! There are other people who will no doubt comment, but there's careful planning and a large chalboard detailing the style for each voice involved.

  • @mtelewicz
    @mtelewicz ปีที่แล้ว +28

    So that "gospel choir..." yeah, that's actually Jonah (the singer) recording himself singing and layering it all together. Every voice you hear in this song is Jonah.
    EDIT
    Henrik (the bass player) on the song:
    That song took forever to write. Aron and I wrote the chorus in 2016. We found it in a drawer and tried a bunch of new verses with it until we got the right one. Then at the last minute, Aron wrote the gospel choir parts. He sent a very funny demo in which he marked where all the different gospel parts come in and what kind of voice they had. When Jonah recorded them, he had a chalkboard with all the different characters in the choir, and he distorted his voice to match each character and so none of them would sound like him. The groove has our typical, swung-funk, triplet feel, but the key is the Bootsy funk formula of having a heavy one to make all the subdivisions after it work. Aron wrote the chorus bass line, which is keyboard bass-like, and it worked best with a combination of fingers and slapping.

    As far as I know, the bass is not layered, but Henrik uses a quite complex setup and sometimes feeds the bass through MIDI to bring it one octave lower or to duplicate it one octave lower, also when playing live. They sound just the same when playing live, which is no small feat.

    Thanks for a great reaction. I just love to see someone experiencing Dirty Loops for the first time and have their mind blown. This one is one of their originals, and to me the whole song and arrangement just screams Toto. The drummer (Aron Mellergård) wrote quite a bit of this song and he often cites Toto as one of his main influences growing up, so it's not exactly surprising, I guess. 😄

    • @lottawiklund8606
      @lottawiklund8606 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Also, Jonah Nilsson (keyboard/vocals) was classically trained on the piano, and didn't change to jazz until mid-highschool, so a lot of his piano playing has massive classical influences. He grew up in a family of classical musicians, and it can be heard in both his playing and the way he's arranging harmonies.

    • @lottawiklund8606
      @lottawiklund8606 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The percussionist (Andreas Ekstedt) isn't part of the band though, but a session musician they often hire to do percussion for them. The credits are often full of silly stuff, and the dietitian of "Work Shit Out" was indeed Jabba the Hutt. 🤣
      Aron (drums) singing backup vocals on the video was just for show. Someone else posted a snippet in their comment from an interview with Henrik Linder, in Bass Magazine, about how they did the vocals for this song. That interview goes through the creation of the whole Phoenix EP, and is a really good read if you want to know more about their creative process. I can't link the article here, or yourube will just auto-delete the comment, but google Henrik Linder Songified, and it should pop right up.

      Yeah, as Robert Claeson already pointed out, Svenska kyrkan (the Swedish Lutheran church), where Jonah's parents work, is almost exclusively using classical music, so think more chamber choir style. His whole family are classical musicians, and Henrik has said in interviews that one of the reason's for Dirty Loop's special sound, is Jonah's classical voice leading when he arranges the harmonies.

      @@NerdvanaReactions here is one of the videos where Jonah does a bit of explaining about the voice leading in “Next To You”.
      Although it’s ‘only’ in regards to the harmonic structure at the end section, it’s still an eye opener, I thought, to the way in which he approaches harmony and songwriting. Hope you find it interesting:
      th-cam.com/video/A7M9SAS7ioE/w-d-xo.html
      There is an interview with him on “Stratele Studio”s YTube site-a long one in three episodes. It’s super interesting as well, but maybe more so if you’ve heard a fair bit of their music first -not sure.

    In the olden days, we referred to layering as “looping” and each layer as a “loop”. Dirty loops, were the ones that had a bit of a flaw, or hiss. These guys are masters at what you call layering. They are all masters, classically trained and further educated by exposure to and love for pop music, jazz, country, gospel, blues. They are never, ever boring!

  • @hackapump
    @hackapump ปีที่แล้ว +2

    What is remarkable about the vocal layering on this one is that it is a single guy doing them. Normally there is only so much hugeness you can achieve through multiplying a single voice, so what Jonah did was impersonating the different voices of a gospel choir. Which is kind of mindblowing in and of itself. I don’t think ”civilians” fully appreciate what an accomplishment that is.

    I feel your boy band reference by the way. In fact I have seen the term ”boy band jazz” used in reference to DL, which of course is a gross simplification, but still… I think it has something to do with Jonah’s boyish but athletic vocals, paired with his wholesome looks. Most people hear the obvious MJ influence, but there’s a lot of Stevie Wonder in his vocals too - you’re definitely right about that. This song is a bit like their ”Bohemian Rhapsody”, and for my sanity I have to believe they did it tongue in cheek. Because throwing this amount of kitchen sink into a single song is, well, ridiculous.

    Refried homefries, thanks a bunch for that request! :)
    And Anna, I loved this vid of yours. Your appreciation of these dudes was palpable :)
    Jonah’s layering of vocals you might find on most of their tracks, even on their very early songs and covers of other artists’ tunes.
    It adds so much, I agree, not to mention his riffs and runs.
    This is an original, and like many of their originals, developed from a simple, poppy core tune, then ‘loopified’ into oblivion 🤣
    Loved your analysis of Jonah’s voice and the various flavors there are to it…
    Quincy Jones once said of Jonah: “He’s got soul, and one of the biggest ranges I’ve ever heard”.
    Dirty Loops are three Swedish musicians, having met early in their music school-college days. The tightness of their playing, the way they complement each other, is insane.
    And Stevie Wonder comes through in Jonah’s singing again and again….
    (Apparently he met Dirty Loops at a big US event and told Jonah that he might collaborate with him/them….)
    Both of Jonah’s parents were involved in, or leading, church choirs, and taking lil’ Jonah to rehearsals he was exposed to singing from the very beginning.
    In this vid they’d recorded everything first, then shot the visuals. They’re all too often taking the Micky out of things, so them trading instruments, and Aron (drums) on vocals, is just for fun ;)
    Glad you found those dudes, and appreciate them.
    There’s much to be explored when it comes to those three and their collaborations.
    This was a cool track to start with.
    Oh and also, their credits are often funny and worth listening to. Thanks for listening to this one with us 🙏
    The vocals from this credit - I could just listen to them all day long……
    The percussionist on a lot of their track is Andreas Ekstedt, not featured in their videos tho.
    All of their tracks are fire, from both the point of view of their music writing and their individual chops. Also in how they compliment each other’s playing and making each one of them shine.
    Also, each one of them is involved in the writing of their songs, being talented on multiple levels, with Aron, the drummer, editing all or most of their videos.
    There’s much to be discovered about them.
    Enjoy ☺️
    Would love to hear your reaction to their “World On Fire” or “Breakdown” or “Work Shit Out”.

And do so with confidence as there are NO bad Loops songs. I'm psyched for the wonderful Loops rabbit hole it sounds like you're about to jump down. I'm looking forward to more reactions.

    Most of the vocals for Dirty Loops are, in fact, the lead singer/keyboardist.
    Check out their cover of “Thriller” with the Cory Wong band.
    This group is managed by Quincy Jones… who managed MJ….
    Please consider another of Quincy’s acquisitions, particularly if you like layered vocals…
    an artist named Jacob Collier.
    Jacob is a composer/arranger/multi-instrumentalist/producer/multi-grammy winner/genius.
    For a 1st video, consider “The Flintstones Theme” or his cover of “Don’t You Worry ’bout a Thing”.

    Maybe at some point you could comment on Aron's ability to play like crazy on the drums, and still just fit in really smoothly in the songs?

      I was extremely taken aback by what I was hearing. I said this multiple times in the video itself, and in my text add-ins when I edited it. I'm sorry if you feel I didn't give Aron enough credit, but it was a lot to take in.

      @@NerdvanaReactions Oh, I was in no way intending to criticise (in a negative way), I was just making a suggestion. I guess I can blame it on not being native in English, being utterly insensitive, and a lack of emotional intelligence on my part. Sadly, I likely won’t improve myself. I think you reaction, objectively, was fabulously nice!
