10 months late and technically this isn't a perfect explanation, but the way lap counters work in MKSC is checking that you've hit certain boundaries before giving you the lap. On the ones where the lap counter instantly maxes out, they've exploited an out of bounds section where every single lap check boundary overlaps at once

If you hit the wall mid-air (assuming you don't collide with anything that stops you), you will retain the speed boost for a while as long as A button remains released. A TAS is meant to showcase the upper limit of what's possible in the game. While no human will ever achieve this luck in their lifetime, there's no line of code preventing you from getting mushrooms over and over so it is possible in theory. RNG manipulation is perfectly valid in a tas for that reason

Nikom 512 The “speed” stat in MKSC actually refers to acceleration. Toad and Peach have highest acceleration (basically identical characters), while Bowser has highest top speed, but worst handling.
The TAS never uses gas for most of the run so top speed doesnt matter if your constantly rolling mushes and wall glitching the speed for extra boost time.
while the item roulette is going, you can press the item button to stop it early. using TAS you can stop it at the perfect time every time and get exactly the item you want
Drifting in this game is fucking weird. It's based on the time you spend drifting but there is no indicator that you're going to get it... until you get the blue boost from your exhaust.

Dont know about mksc but at least in smk you get turbo from being in a drift for 70 frames im assuming mksc is similiar
It's 60. You drift for 60 continuous frames aka 1 second, then your mt is released once your car faces forward
